- YESTERDAY'S VLOG - • RUCKUS BREAKS DOWN in ...
SHIRTS, STICKERS & MORE - Motonosity.com
Yesterday, my Ruckus died on me and I had to walk it home. I put it on a battery charger and fully charged the thing. Took it out for a ride and made the mistake of getting some gas, turning off the bike in the process. I really didn't think it'd have trouble starting just once (yesterday I started it up about 5 times while out riding). But here we are. This time, I didn't walk it home...

Be careful lifting heavy weights Abbie
Hahahahah
D3moncy it is actually serious when having a baby
Agreed, next time call a friend.
you don't think they know that already? goes without saying really. I'm sure they know they're limits
maulp0k3r people don't know their limits and miscarry.
Hipsternosity back at it again with the Starbucks, flannel ,and scooter
from ruckus to trunkus in seconds....sick MOD!
You should carry around a jumper box, I got one and it's saved me a few times. Just put it in your backpack, they are pretty small and light.
Dude, your editing is gettin on point! keep it up!
Used to own a 70cc racing scooter, the memories are coming back to me now! Getting stuck was part of the deal! Great vids, you've taken over my daily YT feed now.
This isn't a battery problem, this is a charging system problem.
+rustler08 Yep. That's what I said in the video lol
Motonosity Potentially a blown stator, but that's a bit doubtful given how new the thing is. Another option is the regulator/rectifier. make sure you've got everything plugged in first.
Anthony Antoine actually you can get doa parts, but yeah, the reg/rectifier could be a problem as well, as well a connection could be loose/not plugged in! when moto gets a volt meter he can at least check if it's actually charging or not, but there could be one heck of a draw on the battery when running it so fast due too I had a car that when I went over 60, it's battery would start to die due too the car's alt couldn't keep up with the power drain, but then again the car's stock speed was 57 mph & when I had it I did some speed mods on it to make it go faster but I failed to upgrade it's alt to correct for the drain on the battery! but moto did account for this by upgrading the stator but again it could be something with either the wiring or the stator was doa! hopefully he gets it sorted out due too it's not fun having a new toy that doesn't work!
hook up mulitimeter to battery for DC volts. if voltage does not increase after starting engine, then it's a charging issue. if voltage DOES increase, buy a new battery
you might want to check out your grounds , sometime a loose ground , or improper contact will appear as a low battery , but it mostly manifests when the bike is warm , also , take your battery to autozone or something , they can do a deep cycle test on it , just that you are 100% that the battery is good , Nothing worse then being stranded :(
Yep, looks like charging system problems.
There are a few issues I see here.
1. Learn how to use jumper cables.
2. Think about buying a jump start box but it won't replace jumper cables, buy jumper cables.
3. Turn the headlights off if you're worried about it cranking.
4. Don't let your pregnant wife help load and unload heavy things, call a friend.
5. Find a Harbor Freight and grab a cheap volt meter.
Josh Bishop I agree with everything you listed. But I especially agree with #4, I mean what the hell!?!
Walter White I have a feeling that the lack of skills/common sense demonstrated on this channel are partially do to him growing up in a de-masculated household.
That doesn't take away from the channel, if anything it's a great example of how the lack in education of manly things can be overcome by the willingness to do and learn.
You and your wife give me hope for the future Moto. Just got out of a 2 and a half year relationship, it's really nice seeing both of you being wonderful to eachother
This is the reason I remove the battery and add a kick start to all my bikes
Erik Jonsson I *added* a battery to mine. Having steady lights is nice. Little bitty 1.3Ah battery should keep all my (LED) lights going for over an hour even if the charging system packs it in completely. Even the headlamp!
pandorafalters yea the only downside is that the ligts dont fully shine at the best of there ability.
Erik Jonsson I had add a battery because LEDs don't like AC, & that was actually the cheapest way to get lights back on it. Started out as a 6V bike with an AC headlamp, then it got stripped for pure trail use on a sticker & premix, then I got it & wanted to ride on the street. Had to roll a new harness & re-wire the stator, but now it's all LED & all 12VDC.
And the *entire* electrical system, including the battery & lights, weighs barely more than the OEM battery alone. Maybe 4 pounds, mostly wire.
keep up the great work man! always enjoy your videos
Your wife is such a good sport man. Atleast you know it'll fit in the Jeep now lol.
You probably need a new stator because the battery isn't charging
+Batman my first guess is a bad connection since it's a brand new stator. Gotta wait for the voltmeter though.
Motonosity for the past 15 vids I've had notifications on and comment as soon as you post and you finally answered. Awesome
Thanks for that dude!
+Motonosity my cbr1000 dies so i disconnect the battery
What about the voltage regulator ? i would try another one first.
Your wife is the real MVP
Great Ruckus series, tons of fun to watch! Would love some R1 vids again some day too!
I'm a new subscriber, really like the videos so far. that ruckas really does look sweet man.
it's fun to see that you're just doing raw vlogging. because other motorvloggers seem to act a little fake! love your channel and a big thumbs up from the netherlands!
This is bringing back so many memories. It's just so satisfying to gain an extra mph or two on a scooter. lol. I used to have a Chinese one that I put a big bore and played the weights game for a while. The weather really affected it's performance too. Some days I could get it to 55mph (72cc) and some days were only 50. The wot tuck for 10 miles was an everyday thing.
motonosity My girl and I watch all your videos and she wanted me to ask your wife what kind of boots shes wearing in this video. She loves them and wants me to get them for her birthday. Thank you so much! Keep the videos comin, love it!!
Your such a good vlogger/moto vlogger keep up the good work
How cool is Abby though? Hit the like button for her! Happy for you Motonosity. I know you'll sort out the battery issue on Rachel. At least you have an awesome wife that is supportive and willing to help when you need that roadside service!!
With the motor running, measure the DC voltage on the battery terminals with a multimeter. It should be reading above 13.5V. If not, then the motor is not recharging the battery, hence the reason it is dying once you're out (and the ignition could potentially be running off the battery). I'm not familiar with the charging systems on the ruckus, but I would start with testing the output of your stator and then just move on down the line towards the battery testing all components and connections from there 👍🏼
Ladies and gentleman, the 8000$ scooter that wont start when you are away from home.
EpicPaperclip No shit right
no different than $35k cars that have battery issues... shut happens
everything that has a battery can have a battery problem...some old dude from a long time ago made some clever saying about this type of stuff?!?! LOL
EpicPaperclip ladies and gentleman the type of people that wont try anything in life because theyre afraid of failing!!!
Ladies and gentlemen and dumbass Know it all noob that gets shit wrong all the time.
I think that Abbie shouldn't lift such heavy things like ruckus into the car because she is pregnant and I hope you fix the ruckus because it looks awesome
Hey!! I like your channel also what a great wife brother!!! She was right there to help you out really cool!!!
Hope you get it figured out quickly dude! 👌
Man someone commented on my build series saying they hope I don't have as many issues as you're having with the ruckus. I'm saying they jinxed me xD Thanks for the shoutout!
im no mechanic but i think the reason that ice box wasnt lighting up was because the stator wasnt puting a charge through to the battery if that makes any sense.
keep up the awesone vids.
Love the vids man!
Dude props to your wife. She's a damn trooper. Lifting the ruckus being that pregnant. 😂
Brent, that flannel looks nice. Link? Loving the vids. Keep up the good work.
Bro, battery problems are the worst! I had my R6 battery go bad on me a few weeks ago, so I went ahead and put that Shorai battery in, and now no more probs. Love that thing.
+BIGKittyHendo90 Shorai makes great batteries. Have one in my R1.
Motonosity I know. You're the reason I bought it. Haha thanks for the vids man.
Motonosity
you need to put a spare battery in your back pack so you won't get stranded again lol love the videos keep up the great work brother
Motonosity
O ya congratulations on the new baby. just some advice start saving for college now it's expensive. I didn't do that and now I'm wishing I did. my son's first year of college and it's a awesome experience sending him off to college.
You sir have the same issue as me! Do you have an 02 R6 ? I have a stator/rectifier issue and have sometimes it's fine and sometimes it's not lol
Build Series...I'm more interested in a Gains Series aka resurrection of the poor Fitnosity channel
+Koala0226 Stay tuned tomorrow!
Motonosity you should put a 232cc GY6 big bore. You should check them out at least.
Motonosity dude, what app is that that you're using to measure your speed
Koala0226 it's called digihud speedometer. iOS or android you can get the pro version or normal for free I think there both the same I think
Thanks liam
Im sure you already know but check alternator, Reg/Rec, wiring and get a lithium battery.
I feel your pain bro! Ive had so many charging issues with my own bike, and it sucks! even more when its got carbs because you also need to get the choke right for it to start!
Dam mang, AGAIN!!!!!???? I have to admit I was a bit worried about you're wife being prego and helping you lift it in and out of the vehicle. I think it's great though that she fully supports you mang! That food you made looked BOMB my dude!!! Again I don't ride but, if I ever get stickers made of my dash cam channel I'll be sure to send them to you. Great video as always mang! You're vlogs are by far the best! You have a way of speaking to your audience as if they were right in front of you. Keep up the great work and stay safe my dude! :)
Hey, quick question,.... what ever happened to Moto Mubble? Really miss those live streams.
Can't wait to see more jeep vids in the spring
man that scooter is so awesome it left you stranded 2 times , people really enjoy watching it
Sometimes a bad ground will actually destroy the stator on these . Hope that's not the case for you . The weights kinda need to be changed along with the rear counter spring . And engine RPMs are a big part of the tuning process with weights and springs . You build the capability to make more RPMs then you can go faster by changing gearing or in a smaller way you can change front pulley size to "over drive" size and even belt lengths play a part ... Scooter science ... lol . The main thing is to have fun !
You should get a lot more fans bro ur the best youtuber I know keep it up alright 👌
Just seeing this video! Thanks for opening the letter in a video. I appreciate you checking out my channel and keep up the great work!
I like how you guys try out new recipes from a cook book. Inspires me to try it too
get yourself one of those battery jump boxes. Their small now days and can fit easily in backpack. hope you get the scoot fixed soon!! Cheers from Oregon
I noticed that when you went to restart the ruck at the gas station you popped the choke. The chokes on those OKO slide carbs absolutely piss fuel down the intake when they're open and all that additional fuel and air from the enrichment circuit substantially increases the strain on the starter and amperage draw from the battery. If you're jetting is in the proper neighborhood, you shouldn't have to choke at all so long as temps above 50 even when the engine's dead cold from sitting overnight or something. And if the engine's still got any heat in it to the touch you can typically hot start it without choke for an hour or more after shutdown depending on ambient temps. Certainly at a gas station type of situation there is almost no situation where enrichment should be necessary.
If you haven't already thrown a new battery or stator or other parts at it, consider just changing your starting habits, let it crank a couple more times with the throttle closed completely and choke off and see if it starts to want to catch. If it does begin to catch, very slowly and carefully increase throttle bit by bit, but don't bother to crank the throttle back more than an eighth of a turn on these slide carbs, any more isn't going to do anything but increase draw on the battery and slow down the compression stroke. These slide carbs give great throttle feel and are much more tunable than the stock CVK design, but their one major downside is they're much more sensitive and finnicky, especially on sloppy low compression platforms like these gy6s. You'll figure out what it likes soon enough.
As for your top speed, I can hear that you're not even topping out the variator yet. You've got much more top end to be unlocked, your main jet, or combination of needle position and main is most likely too rich to get over the rpm hump and top it out. When you gain a couple more mph and start to hear the note of the engine increase in frequency beyond the flat tone you get while accelerating, that's when you'll know you're moving in the right direction with respect to WOT jetting.
Check the output of the stator when you rev the bike. it should be up around 15 volts when you rev. If your battery is totally bad it wont keep a charge at all so you should check both the stator output and the battery volts after its fully charged.
Your wife seems so chill. They all should be like that.
that would be nice
P
Make sure you check voltage at the battery with the engine running as well as at the stator. If the stator is putting out power and the battery isn't charging, there could be a bad voltage regulator somewhere in the system.
I think the issue isn't the battery to be honest. If they battery's not charged, the light's wouldn't go on. Neither would it spark. So i'm guessing it's probably the engine. Usually it's the carburettor. Since you already can't idle it with the choke off, might wanna check the carb? I'm not very good with bikes but i think this might help.
Be sure to make sure its charging, but remember you have over tripled the displacement. Probably needs a higher cranking amp battery. The one it came with is for 50cc.
I wonder too how even heavier rollers weights would do... OH! Have you measured the belt's size? I believe the belt width and length affect top speed too. Something like, if the belt isn't long enough, it can't physically climb to the edge of the variator/driveface for max gearing, and just as well if the belt isn't wide enough, it can't reach the edge either. So in other words, if the belt is worn or came not-as-wide or not-as-long as it claims to be, it might be slowing you down.
of course Fry moves away when you need him and his truck the most. hahaha
MOTO, JUMPER CABLES! ALL YOU NEED IS A JUMP WHEN YOUR BATTERY DIES!
Abbie im so jealous of your boots theyre so cute
I did 90 on a 1960's lambretta a long time ago. It was terrifying. It was far from stock though. Had chassis bracing that looked sort of like the top tube of a bicycle.
Hey motonosity I've been wondering since you made the tofu. what cook book do you use for your food. It all looks really good.
Hope you get the ruckus running again. from the sound of it at the gas station it didn't sound like a battery issue since it wanted to turn over.
I'm not into your specific engine but a little bit in 50ccm scooters. you need to sort out the rpm at which your engine with your exhaust has the most power. then adjust the weights and possibly the clutch springs. if you're going to reach top speed you want your engine to rev higher.
example: clutch engage between 4500-6000, acceleration at steady 7200 and shortly before you reach top speed your rpm went up to 8000.
To check if its charging without a meter: Start scooter. Watch headlights and shut it off. If headlights dim then your stator/CID is working. If it stays the same brightness then wait for a meter so you can diagnose the Stator and CID.
Monster gains brotha! Consider getting a clamp meter (separately or together with voltmeter) if doing some more housework. Keep up the tremendous efforts and go get into it ;-)
My wife was triggered when Abbie helped you lift the Ruck into the Jeep, babies are more valuable than Ruckuses 🐢☠
what a great wife you have. I hope you tell her how crazy you are about her every single everyday.
Hey man, you should get one of those tiny jump pack things to carry in your pocket
Yup its the stator dude. I had to replace mine in my bike when it was doing the same thing.
I have a ruckus too, and I have that problem two weeks ago too, it was a rele, the bike started for 3days when i charge the battery and then it died again... its not the same problem but is almost the same... I hope i have helped!
Oh no. Wasted X 2! My best suggest is call Ryan. Battery should maintain itself while riding, unless there's a short, or something large draining it. Like if you had some huge headlamps or extra stuff. (radio, extra lights, etc.) Shout out to Abbie for saving the day! Moto baby Momma rules! Peace.
Stator and rectifier? seems like the charging system isnt charging the battery.. had a similar problem with my old GSXR. I doubt its blown as the bike is new.. but maybe the stock ones aren't enough for what you have done to the bike?
Hey man I'm a new subscriber but I'm a Aviation Electrician in the USMC.
I think your problem is in a relay. A lot of batts use (for example) 24v to start the system. But there are relays that feed 28v. The extra 4v is what charges the battery while in use. I'd be happy to try to help.
When Motonosity's pregnant wife can deadlift more than you... 😢
+rodriguezro9999 get them gains bro!
big bores usually need more cranking amps. once it's hot the rings have a better seal creating more compression making it harder to turn over. Try a bigger cranking amp battery.
instead of blowing in the gas tank you can blow in the vaccume line that connects to the manifold. keep me in mind for any gy6 questions you have. love the ruck videos. subscribed
oh and a kickstart is nice to have lol
you think that exhaust would fit on my r50 genuine roughhouse scooter ? its the 2016 special edition bike
When you turn it off do you keep your keys on the ruckus or bring them with you cause maybe that's the problem it keeps the battery on all the time so it isn't charging
check the obvious first, fuses ect, then check battery & load test it, if it passes rectifier, verify its pushing enough volts at 5k rpm if its ok check the ac output of your stator & continuity. If i remember correctly, you did replace it so you will need to get exactl output details from the manufacturer the service book will not be right for it.
Have you tried pulling the ground cable off of the battery while the engine is running? If it dies then you're running the ignition system from the battery which means no power from the charging system. That would also account for the battery running down when you ride it. Either way, best of luck!
Hey dude just a tip if your vehicle is not charging then the spark fuel pump lights everything that would run off the stater will run off your battery witch I'll drain your battery very very fast same as in a car but great bike love your videos and keep up the good work bud and for the problem check all grounds and then the stater
what type of 150cc engine do u have. my 150cc scooter hit 60 on a little bit of a uphill with just a racing cdi
Hey brother my Henry is and I am located in Kissimmee, FL and I have been seeing ur videos lately...kool Ruckus my man, I like it a lot...ur issues with the battery is caused by faulty charging system...chk ur stator I think that's ur problem...let me know if that was ur problem...later guy and take care and good luck...oh yeah I almost forgot u said early that u wanted comments on ur next build u should do a grom...
Dude your ride is so sweet. Looks badass. Watch them bumps in the road, speed wobble will trash ya. PEACE!
"how to steal your very own ruckus" by motonosity, lol jk bud, I miss my grom I sold everytime I watch your ruckus vids lol
Dude you should take this thing to cars n coffee this weekend(?)!
you have to change the the flywheel because you change the stator but don't change de flywheel to 11 pole flywheel
and have to change the regulator to a 11 pole regulator
Abbie is the real MVP in this video! :)
This happened to me, i was doing wheelies and sharp corners there's a relay or resistor on the battery like where you put the positive ground on push them all in tight and it should work man
It's annoying because i wanna watch the whole video before commenting but i wanna prove i was here this early haha
I definitely don’t miss my gy6 I have a get motor might be a hell of a lot slower but I know coming out my bike will start . Everyday I would pray my bike will start brand new motor battery every thing .
How to fix:
-Get a new battery first (current one is fucked anyway and bad battery influences results of measuring)
-Check if charging (Maximum 14,9V DC)
-If not; check all connections
-If connections are ok; check stator AC output (measure with Voltage Regulator disconnected, on GY6 engines I believe you measure between the White and Yellow stator wire). Output should be atleast 15V and increase at higher RPM
-If stator is ok ; test Voltage Regulator diodes: put your multimeter in diode mode (looks something like - |> - ) and measure the following, with regulator disconnected so directly on the metal pins:
BLACK multimeter wire on the pin of the RED wire coming from voltage regulator, RED multimeter wire on the pin of the YELLOW wire (= alternator output) coming from voltage regulator. This should give a reading (example 0,610) No reading or beeping sound means bad diode.
Now move the RED multimeter wire to the pin of the WHITE wire (= also alternator output) coming from voltage regulator. This should give roughly the same reading (example 0,612)
Now do the same thing but with the multimeter BLACK and RED wires swapped. This should give no reading, if your multimeter shows any number or starts beeping the diode is bad.
Now finally do the same thing again except you measure between the pin of the GREEN wire coming from the voltage regulator. This time measuring with the RED multimeter wire on this pin you should get the same readings as before (example 0,610) and measuring with the BLACK multimeter wire on the GREEN wire pin must not give any reading.
I know it's very complicated on paper, but in reality it's quite simple. If you have a different Voltage Regulator (5 pin instead of 4 pin) it's exactly the same but instead of 1x WHITE and 1x YELLOW you'll have 3x YELLOW which have the same function (altnernator output). Good luck and message me if you need any help!
+JeeFtw Love the detail man! Much appreciated. Gonna reference this when I go through everything :)
No problem, hopefully it will help!
hey man, you can actually also start the ruckus with a drill on the variator if it goes fast enough. try it out. can save you from wrestling it into the car.
It's quite possible that its a grounding issue. Check continuity with every ground you can find when you get that multi-meter.
what's the watt rating for your stator? does it have a separate lighting coil?
Time to test the charging system.. and the stock ruckus and grom batteries are trash. Also check all the grounds.
I'm going to guess its your R/R. My first bike was an SV like yours and they are notorious for having bad R/R;s... you can usually fix this by running the R/R directly to the battery to reduce the load on it (if its not fried already) this fixed my issue of the bike just not starting due to the R/R overheating during rides.
turn the bloody lights of when trying to start it
on a stock ruckus at least they don't turn off, automatically come on with the key
mastercreative1 I'm not sure how the laws differ by state, but in America, there's legislation that says all motorcycles/scooters made after a certain year, usually 1980 and newer, must have their headlights and taillights on all the time.
James Miller should only take a moment to unplug them.
You don't always get that option, unfortunately! Most bikes can't turn them off.
Quick and easy to unplug the loom.
Check the current drawn by the battery at start and end of charge, when battery charged should be near zero amps. When engine running check battery voltage is stable and increases when rev'ed but stable as your regulator may be nfg. More likely a duff battery,
You make awesome videos
Check the ground wire coming from stator. Had the same problem on my bike and ground was loose and not allowing it to charge. Take a vote meter and check what the volts going to battery. it should be charging around 13 to 14 volts
I developed the same problem after being fully built and riding for a week.. i just kick-start every time now
Damnnn Abbie got back
But I love the look you went for. The seat did make it pop!
youre rectifier or stator could be bad. more likely the rectifier cuz the ruck probably wouldnt run right if it was the stator. what wattage headlight bulbs do you have? they could be drawing more power than the stator could handle. Are you running a 11 pole stator and not the 8 pole stator that normally come with the gy6 engines? you can use jumper cables from a car or a jump pack to start a ruck. just make sure the car is off and just touch the positive cable to the starter connection on the ruck. after 7 years of having a swapped ruck, i sold mine last year for something more reliable like the grom.
+motonosity how do I register for your website ? if you can attach a link to that that would be clutch
did you install the 11 pole stator? the stock gy6 stat sucks.
Hey Brent! What phone is that? I love how it looks!
