Boy, this was a blast to play. I love words anyway, and Adrian’s lexicon of alliterations - clichés , commentary, controversy, chatter, chit-chat, etc - always made me smile. I’m also all for action rather than words, so the reminder that ‘It’s all talk, only talk’, at the beginning an end of every letter, resonated strongly with me. Many people talk about doing; fewer people actually do.
It was also one of the quickest songs to come together in the origination stages, and that’s always a good omen. The guitar and stick parts, and the lyrical idea, seemed to appear from nowhere - really fast. I may have missed some long gestation in the back of Belew’s head, but I don’t think so. And we all knew very quickly it would work well on stage. All it needed was a backbeat from the drummer, but not on hi-hat or cymbals , of course. This was a model of collective collaboration. There was nothing to say about what any individual was doing. All the bits fitted together perfectly, like a jigsaw.
This version is performed by six men, (five of whom are invisible), but nothing significant is added to the Tokyo version of 1984, also on this channel, performed by four men. The sound is a bit thicker with six, but the song could be played by one man and a kazoo and it would still work. It’s sort of indestructible.
Regular subscribers here will have got my drift in respect of teaching. IMO the best teaching is absorbed by listening to and observing the teacher in action and context, in other words, playing live with others. That’s why this channel predominantly uploads performance footage. Here you can see it done (well, not on this video): the articulation, the choices made, possibilities missed, all for better or worse. You may miss detail because the camera is elsewhere or the action too fast, but many other questions are worth asking.
For example, why is the stage black throughout, save for the lead performer and his Day-Glo guitar? The younger drummer will want to know other things. Why are the drums and cymbals set up that way? How often does the drummer deviate from a given pattern and to what effect? How often are toms used? How often does the drummer exit from a fill on the downbeat (rock), or tend to avoid that (jazz)? How often is the internal balance of the percussion instruments varied, or does it stay the same? Does the player turn on the hi-hat like an unvarying click track, or is the hat used as a fourth voice, integral to the rhythmic phrasing? Or is the hat not pedalled at all? To what extent are genre norms being challenged, or is the drummer content to lay it down and keep out of the way? These are interesting questions being answered in front of you every time you go hear a drummer perform.
And those are just the drum ones.

I smile whenever I get to see footage of the Double Trio. Thank you Mr. Bruford!
I played Discipline, the album that this track comes from, for the first time just a few days ago, and I was blown away.
This sounds like a more musically proficient Talking Heads. It's brilliant.
Belew did play with them before he joined King Crimson. I think I read somewhere that they were considering replacing David Byrne with him, but that could just be a rumor or something I’ve made up entirely.
@@Cybercrapper28that's true but Blew declined, steering clear of the internal politics of that band.
Discipline was my introduction to KC. They used to show a video of this song (just them playing live but in a TV studio setting) on a local PBS station where I grew up in the 80s, and later the more professionally produced video for “Heartbeat” when Beat came out. Also Belew’s solo song “Big Electric Cat” which all kinda merged into my adolescent mind. It wasn’t til I was in college that I ever heard of their early stuff.
@@MDK2_Radio.. I listened to In The Court of the Crimson King when I was about 14.. Went to see the Discipline concert in (I think it was '81or so)..
I had the VHS video made from this tour. It was where my fiance at the time first experienced Crimson. I myself have been a fan for over 50 years.
Nice suit and orange glowing guitar sounds great to my eyes
This is my prefered King Crimson song and I never seen this version before. Thanks Bill!
Waiting Man is a good one, too.

Great song.
Sublime. Satisfying. Super. Elephant Talk
Love that snare sound.
Adrian Belew, what a genius! Thank you Bill, these videos are gold!
What a band!
Love the double trio!
Great memories of the last tour I got to see you play. Wishing you all the best Bill.
I was at this show- it was a birthday gift- and it was one of the best shows I've ever attended.
I think that snare is in tune! Beautiful.
What a great group of musicians. Dang!!!
I might've been there... was at the second of the three Warfield shows they did on this tour, and they were amazing! I had been fortunate to have heard Adrian play this song on solo tours before, but seeing it with Crimson was absolutely amazing, and cool to see this after all these years!
That felt so good! So grateful to have seen KC in Vancouver, BC around the same time as this performance. They are a critical/important part of the history of Progressive, Fusion, as well as experimental music. 🌺
First time seeing KC was three of a perfect pair tour Queen Elizabeth theater Vancouver BC one show I'll never forget Fripp sitting in his chair with numerous pedals surrounding him also remember seeing Holdsworth in the town pump Atavachron tour Chad Wakerman was dynamic on drums what a show 👏 that was
@@by-torandthesnowdog1647 Sounds wonderful! The Town Pump Holdsworth performance must have been an exceptionally intimate performance. Small, yet wonderful venue. I wish I had seen that one. Have an awesome Spring!
Amazing quality on this one! Again, great description as well. Your YT channel is more like a blog. I love how you spend so much time on the descriptions.
This song has never failed to fascinate me… thanks so much for posting this performance (just wish could have seen more of the band)!
Thanks for this upload!! Greatest version so far to me! I saw King Crimson sometime between 2003 and 2009 in Anaheim California at the House of Blues. It's a smaller venue with tables that served grilled steaks, chicken, type food and a bar of course. Very nice place to take a date or just see a performance. There is standing room all round and up to the stage. Every seat is a good seat in the house. Anyway, halfway through the awesome show, they paused after ending a song and it got quiet. I yelled out, 'Elephant Talk'!! and without missing a beat they went into this song. I will never forget that show! Wished I could have seen them more, ... but I have all their albums and I have UA-cam Premium to watch all the live stuff! Lol.
I love the House of Blues. The San Diego location is where I usually go. I tried to get tickets for the Anaheim HOB for Alice In Chains last year, but the scalpers had snatched all of them. I miss the one on Sunset.
This was a blast to watch live! Thanks, Dr. Bill.
Brilliant groovy shit. From the time people where seriously creative and unique.
Sadly, its all computerised now.
Yes. As an "old" (60) professional bassplayer it is really sad to see such few new special musicians with a sound of their own. It's not just the computer nonsense it's also the lack (fear) of wanting to be original. Everybody just sounds the same. Super boring for my ears.@@peterbustin2683

There are still plenty of mega talented bands out there..but.yea..KC sets a bar few can attain.
I saw this your in Rosemont, IL.
Was one of the top three concerts of my lifetime.
You boys were just firing on all six cylinders.
Honored to have been there.
California Guitar Trio was a spectacular bonus opening band.
Just an awesome night.
Thank you!!!!! BILL...
Man I wish I could have seen them on this tour. Bill was one of the drummers that truly influenced me when I was learning how to play. I grabbed up everything I could get my hands on that he did. Through that I was introduced to a family of musicians that branched out and made some of the best music I would experience.
Thanks Bill.
Les Claypool made an entire career sounding like this song.
Killer version!. And someone's playing a glockenspiel! Bill's musicological musings, insights, and comments on song gestation are priceless bonuses. Thank you.
THESE ARE WORDS WITH A 'D' THIS TIME
I caught the Thrak tour in Detroit. But I may have seen this song across The Bay at the Cal Greek Theater on the Beat tour.
My fav KC song so far 😊
One of my favorite solos ever!
King Crimson music is coming back to life! .
I just found out about this...
Introducing Steve Via and Danny Carey ->HolyGuacamole!
Köszönöm
So much talent altogether!
I met Adrian when we played a show together in Vancouver. He was a really nice guy in my limited time to interact with him. It was pretty special to me as I am a big King Crimson fan.
This is a superhero team of musicians. You can hear Bill's snare cut through the mix. I saw KC in SF during the Thrak tour; might have been at this show, but I don't know. Did they have more than one night there? Great show, in any case. Also, saw KC on the Three of a Perfect Pair tour in the 80's, San Diego State Amphitheater. That was a perfect concert. The crowd was very small, so we moved to the ideal spot to watch and listen, and my musical mind was blown. I'd never heard of King Crimson before that night. One of my high school musician friends brought me along: "You gotta see this bass player on the Stick." I didn't have any clue what he was talking about. To that point, my bass inspirations had been John Entwistle, Geddy Lee, and Chris Squire. After that night, Tony Levin joined the ranks in my mind.
I think they played 3 nights in SF.
The level of talent on display here is SICK
The Chapman Stick is so sick!
Man, that brought back my love of that record! But I gotta say I missed hearing, “These are words with a ‘d’ this time!”
That's an interesting version of the song. It isn't so very different from the eighties performances, but there are certainly ways the song has shifted to fit the changed band. I missed that tour, so this interpretation is new to me. Thanks.
Just freakin' brilliant!🤯😮😀🥳
Love this song!!!
Mr. Bruford always makes me think; both his drumming and his words. Mr. Belew kind of makes me laugh.
my brother & i went, we had no tix, greatest show on Earth...
I’m so pissed that I had to miss this show. It was fantastic and my friends all gave me such shit. Deservedly.
Deservedly? What happened?
Best crimsons ever. I’m too young to see this live. But love all incantations of devils
Superb as ever, full concert available on the Thrak box in Blu Ray ,well worth having ❤
KC is a great band. This was the X reincarnation of Fripp’s project in order to please USA market. It worked, preserving quality and delivering a bit of mainstream.
Ade's a frickin' superhero.
Saw it live in 82 nurmburg germany
Buen aporte.
Saludos desde ciudad de Canelones, Uruguay.
Dayumm, Bills snare drum sounds like he's banging a pipe! Great music.
Great video.
Tony Levin is BASS!
Thank-you for posting this amazing video Bill, while I’m a huge YES Fan I must say you guys aka King Crimson were freaking awesome & I look forward to hearing all of you’re wonderful music!!!
GOD BLESS You Bill, & You’re Family & Friends.
Actually the faster tempo and ...there's a rhythmic "je ne sais quois" going on here. Its not looser as such, but well...much more Indiscipline ;)
I actually always considered It to be a mini-double-album. Side1 being the Indiscipline side, and side 2 being the Discipline side. There's a non-trivial contrast in the tracking. Ahhh...the good old days of vinyl :P
Yeahhh hugs from Brasil
Re. the question "Does the player turn on the hi-hat like an unvarying click track, or is the hat used as a fourth voice, integral to the rhythmic phrasing?" I have wondered whether the pattern played on the song "Three of a Perfect Pair" from the like-titled yellow album was ever reproduced live.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Many thanks Bill.
I saw this tour in a small( really small) old antique monastery building in Ohio. The whole building resonated....I truly thought it would crumble into dust. When I heard this LP was going to be released I ordered an Inport UK copy( which I should still have).I was also lucky to see THE POWER TO BELIEVE Tour....the interplay between Fripp and Belew( and band) is just insane.I have seen KC 5 times...including Larks Tongue tour two different kications..Toledo Agora and Detroit Masonic.
Mr. Bruford, you were playing extra hard that night!
I was at this show as well as the earlier stop in the SF bay area when Crimson played at Zellerblock Hall in Berkeley Ca. The shows were both brilliant and unique.
Crimson IS 👑⚒️🌌 🎶
bb king of drums
I was there.
Phunk Yeah!!!
Bill !!!
it's only talk!
Bill Bruford’s Snare “poooommmm”
Харизму и мастерство A. Belew да в другое русло....это была бы мега звезда.
Adrian was the heart in KC.
1981 UEA. M. Magic!
Now I know where did David Byrne comes from!
💪
esta es la version rara ?
KC's best period when Adrian was on board.
🎶😌🎶🔥🔥🔥👍
Powerful version but i wonder why R. Fripp did not play his guitar synth solo part.
De acuerdo…aquí el showman es ADRIAN…(me encanta el sonido de elefante en su guitarra 🎸) Pero por qué no muestran un poco también al resto de los muchachos??
I always wondered how he did that..
The vibe Levin is going for on the Chapman Stick owes a little something to Les Claypool. Or is it the other way around?
This has a Primus sound and beat.
That's because Les Claypool admitted that he got the style from Tony Levin..... Crimson came first.
Kind of Sounds like you mixed primus and the Talking heads
Wait. That guitar isn't even plugged in. Oh. He has a special jack on the side. I'm guessing it has a synth connector.
Элефант ток
Norbert Flipp made a big mistake dropping Adrian.
Saw this tour, saw his solo tour after where I kicked the crap out of some kid 20 years younger and about 12 inches taller then me... and he went to jail.
See this video is like to see a solo artist, only Belew takes….
You think Adrian Belew is not amazing? Balderdash!
Didn’t Talking Heads do this kind of stuff? Rather hear “Starless and Bible Black” and “In the Wake of P”
I’ve followed Crimson since I was a kid, saw this tour among others but - some of you are gonna disagree - I never liked Belew’s vocals. Ever. Even though he sang over some incredible music.
I was at this show. Crazy. I believe Adrian ended the show saying "thank you for the contact high". A lot of weed in the air
