Any drummer who solos every night of a long tour has a lot of people to please. His colleagues want to hear something they haven’t heard a thousand times before; a non-specialist audience is often indifferent (oh, no - not a drum solo…); and most of all the drummer him or herself. That person wants to feel that it flows, that it has ideas that are related to something that preceded the moment at hand, something that gave him the reason to be playing the thing he’s playing right now and not just showing off his favourite lick. Is there some sense of form, of pacing, of dramatic intent?
That’s quite a list of boxes to tick, but this song Indiscipline was not a hard task. It came with built-in neurotic tension. The title of the piece itself conjures images of feral school-kids kicking over trash cans down at the schoolyard. In other words, it’s a perfect set-up to toy with the listener, to put him on edge, jumpy. Is there going to be a manic outburst? “Playing little games…” sneered singer Adrian Belew, who used to play a steady slow tick-tock beat on a second drum kit when we were just a quartet in the 80s. I was free to imitate or comment, slyly or explosively, as the ill-disciplined protagonist. Once I had that sort of scenario straight in my head, the ideas came fairly easily.
Another strange observation is that the drumming information your listener has to make sense of is coming much faster to him than it is to you. You know what you're giving; he doesn’t know what he’s getting. So a little goes a long way. To the layman at the back of two thousand seats, four on the floor and a simple rhythm on one other drum on top of it is already a ton of information and a lot of music. Too much blinding speed is irrelevant and unmusical. Happily I can’t do blinding speed so I don’t have that problem! I do blinding texture!
So I soloed on a lot of versions of this song. This here at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco is OK. But one of my favourites - or at least a night where it all almost went right - was during a five-night run at the Longacre Theatre on Broadway, New York City, in 1995. The sound of the drums is so crisp and beautifully recorded, thanks to Adrian Belew and his man Ken Latchney. The solo has surprises, development, fabulous audience reaction, shape, fiery interludes, some tricky metrical shit that Gavin Harrison ‘s books got me going on, and tons of chutzpah. If you told me to find 2’33” of serious drummage somewhere in all my recorded work that was definitive Bruford, stuff I just couldn’t do any better, stuff I could die happy with - I’d point to that night’s version of Indiscipline. It's available on the double CD Vrooom Vrooom by King Crimson. Anybody catch those Longacre shows?

Can't wait to see what Carey and Vai do with this in the Fall!
BB knew he could play the most insane drum fills because Mr Tony Levin would never lose the tempo.
Came here cause I knew someone would’ve said this before me❤
Fun fact: Bill Bruford never lost the tempo❤😂
The snare sound is amazing and just cuts through everything.
Too bad Tama no longer produces his signature snare anymore.
Been a fan of his signature snare sound for decades. Instantly recognizable.
The sound guy had the right idea. That SNARE!
Please Mr. Bruford, we need you in Drumeo
That would be so awesome!!
Its incredible that drumeo never talk about bruford, his style, his set up during the '80s, his influence on drummers as Danny Carey or Terry bozzio.

As Terry Bozzio was mentioned & I picked up a nice heavily laden DVD Set full of beats & spaces & good games w/Chad Wackerman- I think RUSH could be in a new Space on Tour & the only thing different would be (possibly) either all the great things that we've been missing or new instrument-all's unless inspiration for lyrics came calling on Geddy &/or Alex.
The duet passages w/Terry & Chad were something DW can be proud to have their own name associated with & verse vica.||🎼♪
What kind of comment is this? You "need" Mr. Bruford in Drumeo? Apparently some online drum lesson website? GTFOH!
I don’t think Billy Bruford has ever had a beat out of place. He’s always in complete control.
I guess you could say he has “discipline” lol
Billy’s puttin on a drum clinic. Insane time sig’s…Adrian Belew is a madman. Love this shit.
that open ringing snare sound tho
the greatest!
and I believe this was on a wooden snare drum no less.
Absolutely astonishing. And one of the most ironically titled KC tracks ever! This - played live - is the epitome of discipline (and a shit-ton of raw energy, skill and joy).
Indiscipline is not a commentary on what it takes to perform it, but rather what it expresses. Not ironic in the slightest.
That signature ringy snare drum just kills me every time. I never get tired of listening to it.
"7 seconds, my record."
"I DID!!!!"
That's what she said =(
😎I was there to see it!! Even better...I was there to hear it...This video prooves why I repeat myself when impressed...I repeat myself when impressed...I repeat myself when impressed...I repeat...
I was there too. That was you? Also my wife... several months pregnant at the time so... also my son! Though he likely doesn't remember, but he is a Crimson fan now... We saw them together in Berkeley.

“I do remember one thing” “hahahahhaha”
Yes sir
fucking love it
I like it! Still do! After so many years!
For me the best live performance of this beautiful track (of which there are already so many excellent, and a few breaking down as well, here on youtube). Especially the first 3 and a half minute, which is excellent teasing of musicians amongst each other and also teasing the audience. Building up stress. Repeating themselves, but never truly.
It is the perfect song describing all the emotions a modern sculpturer goes through, before deciding "I like it!"
Cudos to you all, and to King Crimson for being unique and special and a consistent musical surprise through decades. Thank you.
I got to see Adrian play with The Bears in Tempe AZ. Great show!
Saw this tour in Cleveland, Ohio. Fabulous!
Hi Bill, Richard the ticket stub guy here. I was at TWO of those NYC shows that year. It was also the week that the Beatles Anthology debuted on U.S. TV, and Adrian opened your shows with Free As A Bird. I thought KC was on fire, certainly some of the best shows I've seen.
Attended the Palace Theatre show in New Haven on the Double Trio tour. Mind blowing, including "Indiscipline". Bill very visual on this, in yellow, wowing us. And I just verified/realized that this show was where Adrian performed the forthcoming "new" John Lennon/Beatles track "Free As A Bird" for the 1st of 5 times on this tour. It wasn't even released yet (but for the JL demo, via "The Lost Lennon Tapes" radio show Yoko curated in the late '80s)... Adrian, Bill, Robert & Tony already had New Haven in the palm of their collective hand since March 1982, when they'd played Toad's 3 times in 2 days on the Discipline tour (I went to all 3, plus that summer for the Beat album). But yes, the 1995 return of the mighty Crim to US theater stages was something to behold.
This song is quite the journey. Never gets old and I’m sad when we’ve gotten to the end.
I had the dvd of this and each song had the different angles for each member of the band. Always put it on Bill or Pat!
What's the dvd?

The last, truly extraordinary line-up of the Crim!!! Full blown magnificence!!!
Having seen every tour of the quartet in the 80's; this the first time I saw this version of the band. What an amazing performance. Thank you for sharing this one Bill.
Once a musician discovers polyrhythm, really feels the groove that elegantly weaves together separate time signatures, there is no going back. It is a fantastic tool with which to mesmerize an audience. I recall feeling it while jamming about 1970, and spending years developing it in my writing. It doesn’t need the least bit of mystery either, most powerful in the context of a memorable melody or lyric. Funk is born from poly-rhythm. In fact, if it doesn’t groove, I’m not interested.
KC and the Sunshine Band really had broad appeal, and this song proves it.
I was at the Longacre. Need to hunt down my stub for the exact show. It was a transformative event in my listening life
Belew's guitar is alive ....
So great. I regret missing the double trio outing of this KC. The result is I have seen all of these artists inside and and outside of KC but not Bill. He is a special player and one I would have liked to see play live. Thank goodness for these recordings.
Stupendous drumming with insane band!
I appreciate the fact that Bill Bruford still used the 80's Simmons drum pads in 1995, these should be back with the cool Atari sounds!
The build up in this live version is just incredible; shows their years of chemistry at this point, and bills fills are just… god damn🫠🫠🫠🥰
M A G N I F I Q U E !
Sublime !
The best drummer in the world king Bruford
I like it !
Got to be one of my favourite songs of all time. I always laugh maniacally when listening to it!
Utter insanity! (in a good way) These guys never cease to amaze me. Bruford is magnificent on this - best drummer hands down in Prog Rock (sorry Carl and Neil) and a great jazz artist also! Is Adrian Belew the Crypt Keeper?
I was there. California Guitar Trio opened for them
They opened for KC when they played in Denver (and I presume other dates) on their last tour. Long association there.
I was here too, excellent concert. Loved the CGT as well (they played some Bach, if I remember correctly).
Incomparable!
Wonderful Double Trio rendition.... I've seen them in Lyon, France... The interplay berween Bruford, Levin & Belew for the intro is so good, in memory of the 81/83 incarnation of Crimson....
Amazingly psychotic polyrhythms. I love indiscipline and this one’s the wildest.
The Double Trio was truly soemthing to behold, unfortunately I never got to witness it myself, not even The Cromson ProjeKCt Double Trio. Genuinely the best King Crimson have ever been on stage, I'm sure.
I became aware of King Crimson in 2021, and started becoming a huge fan in 2022, and now I'm buying KCCC releases recklessly!
Thank you, Mr. B!
More! Bravo! Encore!
Bloody brilliant.
Thanks Bill Bruford. Still awesome after all these years. Maybe more awesome.
Bill is on fire here! There are tears in my eyes.
Infinite joy to dive in Bill and greetzzz from Holland 🇳🇱
Whole lot of ❤
Thank you for sharing not just your music, but your comments about each performance. Very interesting!
Aparte del grandioso virtuosismo de Mr. Bruford, el sonido de su tarola es único e inmortal!!!!
Great recording of a superb performance
For Bruford drum was a game. He was very very good at this game.
How was this only uploaded a month ago, I’ve watched it approx 2 million times🤣
Wow, I was there !!!! Great stuff!
Absolutely brilliant!!!
Snare equiped with human skin, for sure 😮
Perfection!❤
This tour, in THIS theater in S.F. - possibly this very show - is where I saw King Crimson for the first time. Amazing!!
I was there, great show, great playing, some of my favorite KC, still.... doesnt change the fact that Im still mad at you for retiring!
Just incredible
Bill !!!
Wonderful to hear a different live version of this! Thanks for posting
I love Bill and love that kit too! Great band! The kit colour represents his sunny disposition, he had said. :) I saw this show at Massey Hall in Toronto!
I was awash with frustration and even some anger that the KC "Live in Argentina Official Bootleg" record was nowhere to be found on the streaming services. I still have the beat up double CD somewhere. But yeah I was flumoxed that there wasn't an official long play live recording of the double trio era - then I discovered the aforementioned Vroom Vroom and wanted to see if I still liked it - I DID!
For the love of Pete… I mean Bill.
Thanks buddy. I enjoyed it every time.
Glorious sounds.
I saw them 6 times in Buenos Aires with the Double Trio. My life is not the same before and after. King Crimson is the best music in the universe
It rarely, if ever, gets mentioned, but Bill had already been playing with this rhythm/melodic idea with the Bruford band - it can be heard on the tune Manacles included as a live extra on the One Of A Kind CD. It's quite lovely that there were a couple of Bill's ideas from the Bruford era that found their way into the Discipline band/album :-)
I caught both nights at the Warfield as well as the Zellerbach a couple of nights earlier, and indeed you guys show how improv is done. Thanks for this, I vaguely remember it being recorded but don't recall ever seeing it again until now!
Thank you for your drumming, Bill. Whether you were drumming on Industrial Zone C, VROOOM VROOOM, or 4 ii 6, you've inspired me to be creative with percussion/drumming compositions.
I liked it!!!!!!
Omfg so many thank yous.
Great video.
Immensa formazione, o Band; Bob e company sono incredibili!!
All I can say is Holy crap!
El grupo de Rock Progresivo que supo mantenerse a través de los años con alta performarse.
Gracias Bill.
Saludos desde ciudad de Canelones, Uruguay.
Context/juxtaposition makes a difference. A well-regarded 1980's jam, reset in the mid-1990's with an extra bass and an extra drummer~~~
(Yeah ! Wish I'd been there, then!)~~~
but since I just watched it after viddying the Uncle Floyd Show's ""The Mr. Spooky Show" segment, somehow the easy laughs and the technical prowess, the highbrow and the lowbrow flow together seamlessly, the discipline and the wacky looseness somehow NOT a contradiction.
This night was one of the best performances I’ve ever seen.
Longacre shows were a stunning thrak to the head. Went to 3. Have Two Longacre shows on single cam videotape.
I remember seeing this version (or some of the 90s bootlegs uploaded to UA-cam) back when I was probably still in elementary school. Looking back, seeing that part at 2:00 mark became an important "enlightenment" to my drumming and musical thinking.
It was the first time I noticed and figured out metric modulation, but more important was the idea behind it...
So thanks for that!
I LIKE IT!!!
Best snare sound ever
Jeeziss!!!!!
i like it!!
great drummer
The Best!
Maestro
And thanks for the tip-off.
I took delivery of the Vrooom Vrooom CD CD today and yes yes, that's definitely definitive Bruford fun and expertise right there on Indiscipline.
(Though I think I still prefer the 1984 Japan concert video version; where Tony grins as he struggles to hold the beat while you seem to do your indisciplinary best to throw him off.)
Great stuff. Although, my favourite 'Indiscipline' version from this era is from the Tokyo concert (1995) that appears on the Cirkus live compilation.
I saw the 80’s quartet version live a few times. Always entertaining! …there was a time.
The more I hear it ...
Adrian Belew is touring now - Spring 2024 - hosting many special guests - check it!
I saw the Double Trio in SF mid 1990's. Perhaps it was this very show. In any case, it was a great show.
Bill Bruford, My Best drummer for me, Yes, Génesis, King kripson, ( or so ) solo albums. I enjoy his concert at Agora ballroom in Atlanta, Georgia. 1978. Best drummer for me. Congratulations. Bill.
이게 드럼이지~~ 빌 부르포드님 오래오래 사셔요. 한국에서 사랑을 담아❤
I was there.
Dang! 😮
I did see KC one night at the Longacre in ‘95
By the time you were done with it, did you know what to think?
@@arpodyssey7913 i was so involved…I did think it was good
Whoo Hoo
OMG
reggio emilia, 1982...i wanna thank you...
When KC lured BB away from Yes it was the greatest coup in the history of rock music.
Bill !!!
Are these the yellow drums that you gave to the drummer from TOOL for BEAT ?
I was at one show...you dropped a stick during your duet with Pat...in which the crowd was treated to a rare event.
Awesome! And... the camera work... :p
