Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 2 Ep. 7 (Legacy of Terror) and Ep. 8 (Brain Invaders) Season 4 Ep. 19 (Massacre) and Ep. 21 (Brothers) Season 6 Ep. 12 (Destiny)
I love in this cartoon that, when Bloodcount reveals his true nature, Bugs isn’t phased in the slightest, he just accepts that he’s facing a vampire and immediately goes on the offensive and starts messing with the count.
"Hocus Pocus! Now I'm a bat!" "Yeah? Well, Abracadabra!" *turns into a baseball bat* *puts on glasses* "You wouldn't hit a bat with glasses on, would you?" *WHACK*
It's not so much like he picked up Bugs by the head like an animal, but like a chalice. He really did see Bugs as a blood container. You don't get that vibe from very many modern vampires.
You didn’t see a few Chuck Jones cartoons, did you? Because I remember a Marc Anthony/Pussyfoot cartoon where the Dog was trying to get his kitty friend to scare mice; in that short, Marc was holding Pussyfoot like a stress toy as he thinks over a plan, while rubbing Pussyfoot’s head back.
FUN FACT: Doug is wearing a Gorillaz tshirt. In their song “Dracula” they use the same line “Rest is good for the blood” from this cartoon in the song.
Whenever Doug starts talking about a Looney Tunes short, you know it's gonna be a great episode. This is such a great episode. I remember first seeing it on Daffy Ducks Quackbusters. The Abracadabra/Hocus Pocus joke never gets old
The early 60's is an interesting era for Looney Tunes. It has such a distinct art direction. One of the many things I LOVE about Looney Tunes and Merry Melodies, is being able to spot which era the short came from. At this point, Chuck Jones had a lot of influence on Looney Tunes. This short has his style and flare written all over it. I believe this was one of the last shorts to be released theatrically, before they went syndicated for television, along with the diminished production budget and quality, sadly.
What happened specifically was the original studio shut down in 1964, and because the shorts were still popular, Warner Bros. commissioned Freleng-DePatie to make new Looney Tunes shorts. Those are the ones that predominantly starred Daffy Duck, Speedy Gonzales, Roadrunner and Coyote, and not many others. They were so garbage, they weren’t even allowed to use Bugs Bunny
@@Poever And then in 1967, Format Films [the company that animated The Alvin Show] took over entirely, and eventually Daffy and Speedy got phased out, and completely new characters [Bunny and Clyde, Merlin the Magic Mouse, and Cool Cat] were introduced. This lasted until 1969, when the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies theatrical series pretty much ENDED in September of that year.
For 10 years I worked for Chuck Jones' family, dealing with the artwork. I can say that seeing and handling both Maurice and Philips layouts, prelim and final artwork was a treat in and unto itself. Those two (even though the style is different) are in my opinion as great or greater than one of the greatest, Eyvind Earle. Maurice Noble's artwork for The Phantom Tollbooth is out of this world. Highly recommend it just for the artwork.
I love that one. "And so, having redisposed of the monster, exit our hero to the front door, stage right!" The part where Gossamer squeezes into that knight costume is awesome as well.
I just saw this on TV as a kid. It was in the regular circuit of the Bugs Bunny cartoons that played in our Saturday morning line-up. And, yeah, it's one of my favorites, too. The increasingly strained delivery of "Hocus... Pocus..." is hysterical.
Not so hostile, now, but tiny child me HATED those movies. Like, HATED; I felt so ripped off that so many times, they announced a 'Loony Toons Special' then it just turned out to be recycling old cartoons I'd already seen.
Me, too. I also saw it as part of the Bugs Bunny & Tweety Show, the hour of Looney Tunes that ABC used to show on Saturday mornings. They cut out all of the opening credits to fit them in better, so the cartoon would thus begin abruptly with Bugs crashing into the tree stump as Doug did here.
He's referring to "What A Nightmare, Charlie Brown." ua-cam.com/video/WO1xAGjFD78/v-deo.html When the round-headed butt-monkey tells Snoopy that he leads a pampered life compared to Alaskan huskies, he has a nightmare where he is a member of a pack team pulling a sled across the Klondike. ua-cam.com/video/54oZPPAzipQ/v-deo.html Near the end of the book / TV special, the team tries to clear a water crevice, but fall in. Snoopy "almost drowns", but then wakes up. I wish that they would show some more of the 80s Peanuts specials like this one. With the Peanuts now on Apple TV, I guess the streaming service will eventually "put up" some more of these specials.
I saw this first as a part of The Bugs Bunny and Tweety show, and it's honestly one of my favorite episodes, probably because it combines some genuinely spooky and Halloween-y visuals and atmosphere with some pretty funny delivery, giving the best of both a good Looney Toons episode and a great Halloween episode!
What I love about this series is that Doug analyzes everything about the production: the writing, the comedic timing, the backgrounds, the people behind it. Compared to other reviewers who just make jokes or just make shitty shocked expressions about how dark it is.
Man I am really loving this series! Such great videos! I personally recommend: Teen Titans "Fear Itself" Courage the Cowardly Dog "Windmill Vandals" Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy "Who Killed Who?"
I first saw this on a vhs tape my dad made me, which also included icabod crane and great pumpkin. I even remember doing a stupid little magic show as a kid, where I would make stuff "disappear" by turning the camera off, then on again. My magic word? "Abracapokus".
One of my favorites of all time. I can really relate to the count getting crushed every time he tries to get back up and his face getting more and more jank each time. Thank goodness I'm an umpire!
0:50 I clicked video just to comment a fun fact about this cartoon, but I can tell by Doug's shirt he already knew! I was so happy when I watched this cartoon and realized it was used in one of their songs. Almost 20 years later, and they are still my favorite band! (And yes, I noticed the shirt change right away)
May I suggest "The Great Piggy Bank Robbery"? I find that it plays into some of the tropes that this series has covered, and has some amazing character design! And also Daffy Duck shoots a lot of people.
The "I am a vampire" and "Rest is good for the blood" parts gives me flashbacks from Gorillaz song "Dracula". I can also see a Gorillaz shirt that he was using in the video XD
Its because of shorts like this is why I love Tiny Toons as Elmira took on the count as a pet bat and they kept his iconic artstyle! Love💘 these TOONS!
I first saw this Bugs Bunny episode when they ran Bugs Bunny cartoons on Saturday morning back in the early 80's. They used to air the episode where Tweety called Sylvester a Damn Yankee Puddy Tat.

We had a VHS that had this, the red hairy monster bugs bunny one, and the Porky/Sylvester death cult one all together. And we'd watch it every Halloween :)
Gossamer was the monster's name. At one point, he's given a haircut or something, and it turns out that underneath, there is only more hair. He's literally just hair, eyes, fingernails & a.pair of sneakers. And yeah, he felt very threatening as a kid.
I saw this in a Halloween special. When Dracula turned to witch Hazel, it cut to Bugs being chased by Hazel. At the end, Bugs Bunny turns the witch into a rabbit.
Yeah I saw this first and most rewatches came from just when they would air it on Cartoon Network alongside all the other Loony Tunes in that half hour or hour long block they used to do. It's where I saw all the old Loony Tunes and MGM cartoons, before they moved to Boomerang. That said I did see a lot of the airings of those themed connections like Quack Busters, too. Also Bugs' singing in this episode has been burned into my brain for some reason, as is him and the Count trading the two words. For whatever reason this is one of the Bugs Bunny cartoons I remember the most.
I saw this as a kid on network tv. I was mesmerized by it, I shared it with my teenage daughter years ago on a family trip on my ipad. Its now our shared favorite BB short.
You should cover the "Rocko's Modern Life" episodes "To Heck and Back" and/or "Heff in a Handbasket". Alot of reasons why they could be dark toons...LOTS.
To Heck And Back disturbed me too. I kind of question whether Rocko's Modern Life was meant for kids, though. If there's one thing this series proves, it's that pretty much any depiction of Hell in a cartoon is very threatening & intense for children.
I remember first seeing this episode during one of those hour-long compilations that Cartoon Network used to show for Looney Tunes. This was one of the funniest episodes I'd seen XD

This is one of my all time favourite Bugs Bunny cartoons. Back in primary school I always used to quote the “Hocus Pocus, Abracadabra” lines much to my peers amusement. You can’t help but laugh out loud when the Vampire keeps changing appearance every time Bugs says a magic line😂😂.
I love this episode and I saw it randomly one Cartoon Network, back when most of the shows they would show before Toonami was just constant runs of Looney Toonz.

I would like to see more of the cartoons that are actually in the intro to be honest
Really wish you mentioned the
“ you wouldn’t hit a bat with glasses would you?” Scene it’s gold 😂😂
Come on, Critic! You left out the punchline for the Witch Hazel joke!!
"Newport News."
*turns into Witch Hazel*
"Wow, I can do better than that."
I love this episode and I saw it randomly one Cartoon Network, back when most of the shows they would show before Toonami was just constant runs of Looney Toonz.
How about Spongebob Squarepants in “Plankton Paranoia”? That’s pretty dark!
This is one of my absolute favorite Bugs Bunny shorts that I grew up watching as a kid. I always wanted that awesome looking TV set with the winged antennae.
