How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (also known as Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas!) is a 1966 television special directed and co-produced by Chuck Jones. It is based on the 1957 children's book of the same name by Dr. Seuss, the story of the Grinch trying to take away Christmas from the townsfolk of Whoville below his mountain hideaway.

For the record, I am indeed here when the website owned by the technology conglomerate, Google, known as UA-cam, decided that the little image that appears on a video appearing on one's recommended videos section known as a thumbnail, was removed from the video, however, the video itself is still fine, which in my opinion, is fairly humerous.

I grew up watching this every Christmas, despite being born a year or two before the Jim Carry came out, and I honestly don’t remember what my first time watching it was like. What I do know it it’s my favorite Christmas movie along with Christmas Story! I remember as a child just absolutely loving the story so much, although I didn’t really understand till I got older why the Grinch didn’t like Christmas to the point he felt like he needed to steal it. Especially when my parents said they like the movie because the grinch was relatable. I always wondered why he didn’t get headphones or earplugs lol

I actually do remember the first time I watched it - it was a few days before my family and I went to see the Jim Carrey film and felt kinda reluctant about it so I checked out the cartoon. I got it a video store and my brother and I watched it and I fell in love with it, mainly its theme song. When I went to go and see the Jim Carrey Movie, I ended up loving that more than the cartoon and when Jim Carrey started to sing 'You're a mean one' I think that was my first official fan freak-out! We watch it every Christmas, I happen to be one of the few fans who likes all versions of the Grinch. Except for the live show version, I haven't seen that yet.

Honestly I feel the Jim Carrey version would have been better if the focus was just Cindy showing how nice Christmas is and the Grinch just not buying it to the point he does steal it. Some of the extra elements like the disgruntled town, the mayor, the girlfriend, and the backstory do feel more unnecessary as Doug mentioned and it would have probably been more impactful if the Town already knew the meaning and the Relationship with Cindy was the focus, especially since that was the best addition to the story the film had and made for the best interactions with her genuine innocence vs the Grinch’s relatable bitterness

Thank you for this beautiful review Doug! Along with you, I've never been satisfied with any other adaptation of the Grinch for a multitude of reasons. But something I never quite put together that you pointed out here is that the Who's never questioned where everything went, they were just so overjoyed to celebrate Christmas and everything it is that they didn't even think twice. Hearing that in your review actually brought me to tears. The Grinch was my grandma's favorite Christmas movie and it was something that we always shared together and so it always reminds me of her. When I read the book as a child at my grandparents’ house I was literally just floored and stunned by the ending. The Whos still not even hesitating to celebrate Christmas was amazing enough, but the Grinch actually realizing he was wrong and reforming to join the Whos was just unfathomable to me. The whole book was so strange because I had never even read a Dr. Seuss book with a villain protagonist before, but for him to write a Christmas book so incredibly cynical and sinister was hard enough to believe….I just had no idea what to expect. But I had never seen or read anything where a villain (especially one who’s clearly coded as nothing but sinister and despicable) actually realizes he was wrong and becomes a hero. I had to have it explained to me that villains don’t generally think of themselves as villains before, so this ending was just unheard of to me. Which is why I would encourage all to give or read older editions of the book to children that DO NOT SPOIL THE FUCKING ENDING ON THE BACK OR FRONT COVER.

And there's a prequel that needs a Dark Toons analysis: *_Halloween is Grinch Night._* Although not regarded as a classic like the original, it has its merits, and even won an Emmy Award in 1978 for Outstanding Children's Special
. It is darker than _Stole Christmas_ (its "scary" songs like "Grinch Is Gonna Get You" & "Members of the Un-human race" sound very much like they influenced Danny Elfman's _Nightmare Before Christmas_ work) so it's definitely worthy of a review.
    .
June Foray truly was an absolute legend as a voice actress. Chuck Jones paid her the supreme confident, when he said: _"June Foray is not the female Mel Blanc. Mel Blanc was the male June Foray."_ As Doug notes, above, she had a very, very long, active career, and even won an Emmy in her 90's for her portrayal of Mrs. Cauldron on _The Garfield Show._ She also voiced Rocky the Flying Squirrel, the adorable but murderous Talky Tina in _Twilight Zone_ episode "Living Doll" ("My name is Talky Tina, and you'd better be nice to me!"), Granny on the Tweety & Sylvester cartoons, Betty Rubble in the pilot of _The Flintstones_ series, etc., etc., etc. She totally nails it (as usual) here as Cindy Lou Who. Here, she talks about playing her, and she kind of looks like Cindy Lou: tinyurl.com/y6fprals
The voice work of Boris Karloff contrasts nicely with June, and he didn't need to create a special one for the Grinch, because his own is so synonymous with all things creepy. He received a Grammy Award in the Spoken Word category-the only major performing award of his career-for the album taken from the show. Here, are some observations on what Karloff meant to the project:
Karloff had always been a children’s favourite. In the 1930s his role of the Frankenstein monster elicited letters of sympathy from children who sympathised with the creature. Karloff explained, “Over the years thousands of children wrote, expressing compassion for the great, weird creature who was so abused by its sadistic keeper that it could only respond to violence with violence. Those children saw beyond the make-up and really understood.” In 1950 Karloff had starred on Broadway as Captain Hook in _Peter Pan_ and six years later started an association with Caedmon Records. Over the next decade he recorded a series of spoken word LPs, reading tales by such authors as Hans Christian Andersen, The Brothers Grimm, and Lewis Carroll...
Despite the {initial) mixed reviews, however, Chuck Jones retained his faith in the project and correctly predicted it would soon become established as a seasonal favourite. The reason for its success, he felt, was clear, as he later explained in a letter to Evelyn Karloff. “It now seems apparent that _How The Grinch Stole Christmas_ will be a Christmas feature on television for as long as anyone can envisage,” he wrote.
“In my opinion the major reason for this is that Mr. Karloff gave such a thoughtful and understanding reading of the script. I think it is entirely appropriate that children for many generations will find joy and a deeper understanding of Christmas through the skill of your husband.” Dr. Seuss, too, was grateful for Karloff’s contribution. “Working with him on _How The Grinch Stole Christmas_ was a privilege, an honour and will be and to me always,” he wrote.
    www.spookyisles.com/boris-karloff-how-the-grinch-stole-christmas/
And, as Doug notes, Thurl Ravenscroft's important contribution, singing "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch", simply cannot be overlooked.

We had each other.

Watching this brings back memories. When i was about 5 i was over my grandparents(both passed away this year) it was around Christmas time and I was dealing with bad stomach were i was constantly throwing up. My grandma stayed up with me and while was in and out of throwing up we watched this movie over and over that night. Probably not good being sick but it was one of my many favorite memories I spent with her😍😍😍😍😍

On the subject of Dr. Seuss, how about a Dark Toons review of the animated version of the Butter Battle Book? It's a silly premise--two groups arguing about where to put butter on bread--but it's a parable about the then-current arms race and the threat of nuclear war. Pretty grim stuff for a kid's story.

I must've been a teenager when I first saw The Grinch in English class (second language). I knew the character from the song and I might've caught parts of it on TV, but I watched it from beginning to end in my English class. Our teacher had so much love for it, and she wanted to share this with us. She did a good job; although the I was way past childhood, I will always look upon this movie fondly and do consider it a classic worthy of anyone' collection.
By then I was too old not too see the moral of the story a mile away, but I did appreciate the poetry of the cartoon.
Thanks for these deep dive in animation, I am learning so much, and you are so passionate, it is a real pleasure to watch your video essays. Keep it up!

I’m so glad that I’m not crazy. I knew there was a reason this movie looked like Looney Tunes! I thought it was just because of Chuck Jones, but to know that the same animator worked on it really validated my younger self, lol
As for the question, I didn’t really think about the lesson, but I kinda did expect the Whos to react the way they did. Even as a kid, I didn’t like the Whos because they had no personality (besides Cindy Lou), kinda the same way Doug doesn’t like Barney. They were all just nice and smiley, so I didn’t think they had the ability to be sad or angry about anything, much less do something about it. In fact, iirc, I was frustrated with the Whos as a kid, because they felt so unrealistic. I wished they had shown them waking up, looking at the destruction, having a small disappointed look (they didn’t have to be destroyed), looking at each other, then smiling with a look that says “well, that’s okay.”, and going outside to meet everyone because they know that that’s what Christmas is about. Much more realistic, and shows that the Whos made the active choice to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas, instead of robotically going along with whatever is happening to them.

I personally had not seen it until I was quite a bit older (teens), but I remember listening to the record REPEATEDLY as a child. The book was a favorite of mine, but hearing it from the record, man...that was where it was at for me! When I finally saw the movie, I remember thinking "Hey, Max kinda looks like Tom and Jerry style - and the Grinch does, sometimes, too!" Love the movie to bits, especially the scenes with Max.
Thank you for sharing your joy with us this holiday season. 😁👍

This is a classic I watch this every year around Christmas. This special is simple but excellent its very accurate to the book and its really interesting and amazing to me that a 25 minute special with only a $ 315,000 budget told the story better then actual major studios did in 2000 in 105 minutes with$123 million budget and again in 2018 in 86 minutes with a $75 million budget.
Hey maybe this is what you get when two of the all time great creators (in this case Chuck Jones and Ted Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss himself ) get together to do something.

Funny story, when I was a kid, I had no idea what hash was and asked my family. They gave me a good answer that it was potatoes basically, but that got me to ask further questions that why was it relevant to Christmas? We had a great discussion and my brother and I actually started a tradition of making a salmon, leek, and potato hash on Christmas morning we playfully called "Who Hash" to give us something savory to balance out the sweets we usually get each other.
