Alex Garland naming Spirited Away explains so much about why I love him
This is what makes him such a creative visionary to me, and a criminally underrated modern filmmaker. He should be talked with more praise and recognition.
The guy takes inspiration from everywhere- putting Spirited Away and Come and See on the same panel of favourite films. He also mentioned a couple years ago that he loves the Attack on Titan anime and was inspired by some of its creative choices.

@@Nameless0061 não… a elegância é em usar essas oportunidades pra exaltar o cinema de outros lugares do mundo considerando que quase sempre só os Estados Unidos é exaltado pelo cinema e o Wagner é um talento que não veio de lá.
Come and See is arguably the greatest War film ever made! What a performance by Aleksey Kravchenko, also arguably the greatest kid performance on screen! If you have not seen it, please find some time in your day to check it out but be prepared to be emotionally wrecked by the end.

Ah he said Cinema Paradiso, amazing, everyone should watch that film. And I loved how he spoke Portuguese when discussing the Brazilian films. These letterboxed interviews are always so revealing! I love Kirsten Dunst, she was in a bunch of my favourites when I was growing up. I went through a big phase being obsessed first with The Virgin Suicides Book by Jeffrey Eugenides (the cover of second hand copy I got was a tie in with the film) then the beautiful Sofia Coppola film with Kirsten, and then the soundtrack by Air which is so, so beautiful… 😍 I badly want that OST on vinyl. 💕 Plus if you guys enjoy Alex Garland’s movies he started off writing novels, I think he wrote three and they’re all so good, like I wish he had time to write more but it’s fair enough being busy writing and directing amazing movies! ❤

watched that recently, it blew my mind! just the idea of someone writing ALL OF THAT is amazing.
Alex’s real anti-war movies comment was 💯 spot on. Really hope that’s what we get from “Civil War”! Seeing it in a couple of hours
it tracks that Garland liked Anatomy of a Fall. it's very much a him kind of movie. IDK how that works in my mind but it just does lol very sharp, very cerebral, very precise.
I'm divided on Alex Garland's work but I looooove how he talks through his options especially Come and See, a truely uncompromising movie in the same vein as Schindler's List, you feel drained watching it but you can't take your eyes away, and nice analysis of Apocalypse Now

Come and See is indeed one of the very few anti war films that doesnt romanticise war or seduce that. I'd also add Tarkovsky's Ivan's Childhood. Kirsten got both 3 Women and Persona, which is funny as 3 Women is directly inspired by the latter. Great ambiguous films nonetheless. I'm agreed with Wagner that Italian neorealism is the best movement.
Ivan's Childhood is unique and brilliant. The scenes when the boy recalls his mother and him together is so beautiful and surreal. The ending will haunt for the viewer for life but it was a statement that had to be told. I adore this film, Two other great Russian films, 'The Cranes Are Flying', 'Ballad of a Soldier' and sneaking in a thrid 'The Letter Never Sent' - the last being a relatively obscure gem.

I can't wait to see Civil War. It sounds like a really interesting premise.
I know I'm in the minority, but I don't see Come & See as an anti-war film. The backwards montage at the end and the scene with the collaborators doused in gasoline show that the resistance fighters had a certain moral line they wouldn't cross, while the Nazis would cross those lines. Therefore, when the main character joins his fellow soldiers at the end, he was taking a stand against those who have no lines they won't cross. Therefore, it's an antifascist movie, but not a pacifist one. That's always been my interpretation of the film anyway.

that's what I've always thought, Apocalypse Now is not an anti-war movie, which isn't a bad thing it isn't pro-war either, but I've seen some people describe it as anti-war and that's totally not true.
