For an interview with practically zero jokes or humour, that was one of the best interviews I've ever watched here on TDS. Does no harm at all for us to be presented with something like this every now and again here, especially when most viewers of TDS would share a similar ideology or outlook. No need to apologise for your lack of jokes Mr. Garland - you were compelling viewing as you were.

I think you can even see Michael Kosta adjusting to being more serious as the interview goes on. At the start, he seems too eager to revert back to making jokes but lets it go eventually. You can tell he is still learning how to find the balance and the right tone, especially compared to Jon Stewart (not meant as criticism). Very interesting interview in any case.

What I would add to that is that the noise from extremist eventually becomes normalized. Allowing them to have a microphone set to max volume at all times is exhausting and damaging.

There's a quote by George Bernard Shaw, the Irish playwright and activist who saw alot of societal upheaval, that goes: "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man."
That's what Garland is referring to, though the original quote was more about innovation in a way. Though Civil war is innovation in a way also. All the media is focused on the unrreasnable man, and they are the ones quoted and put on TV. In a Russian Disinformation Study" or the "Russian Fake News Study," done by researchers at the Psychological Department of Moscow State University and published in the journal "Psychological Science, they found that you can change people's view of reality within a couple of days if you bombarded them with enough disinformation.
This is one of the main issues in the US. The news is owned by just a few corporations and they focus on the extremes and polarize people, which is what creates the environment for Civil War.

Garland will admit he struggles with the public facing side of things. He always does. He comes across as aloof and dismissive (partly because he is) but also because he just hates this kind of thing. I have no doubt his publisher or production company urged him to appear on something like this, to do the promotional rounds in order to generate attention for the movie... he understands the value of this stuff, I think he was burned by his experiences on DRED and wants to do the best he can to sell the movie, but he will always be horribly uncomfortable in these situations - it's just who he is.

As someone who works for the US Government, I'm so tired of political parties demeaning the people who work within the govt. Military, forestry, regulators, public health, housing, disaster recovery, law enforcement, education… we're all here because we want to. My great great great grandfather was a sawbones for the Union in the American Civil War (and hopefully the only). I read his journals, well what I could make out, penmanship was different then. Few Americans know the bloodshed and pain, they don't understand the failures of reconstruction and how that divide never fully healed, and most people don't seem to recall that in our Civil War there were SIX TIMES as many casualties suffered by the US during WWII.
I don't think most people understand how absolutely deadly and destructive a civil war is, its fantasized because war has for America over the past century, never touched our soil. It happened 'over there', out of mind. But theres nothing that prevents Chicago or Atlanta or anywhere else from looking exactly like Gaza.

Journalists ARE extremely important to our way of life. But we absolutely have to find a way to cease the marketing inherent in most mainstream news…marketing is a term I use here because too many outlets are giving just enough context to stir anxiety and anger BECAUSE angry, anxious people stay tuned and that sells advertising. We need to get back to “the Fairness Doctrine” and Walter Cronkite style reporting without hyperbole and/or deletion of context that would reduce anxiety. The WHOLE story is important.
I recommend people seek out news sources that are rigorous in fact checking and provide as much context as possible.
One excellent source of such news is UA-camr “Beau of the Fifth Column”. Yes, there is a decided left slant but also enough context to reduce anxiety.

    • @DiscoDashco
      @DiscoDashco 5 місяців тому

Beau only “leans left” only because DJT didn’t just push it, he drop kicked Overton’s Window so far to the right, anything that promotes any form of social equity feels “leftist” to many out there. Even if he is an avowed Progressive, there’s nothing wrong with caring about issues if they don’t actually affect him in his daily life. When someone lives their life with a true sense integrity, intellectual dishonesty from people like DJT and all those who still support him become quite off putting. If you like Beau, and I do too, check out Tennessee Brando too, except he doesn’t sugarcoat his material as well as Beau does. As far as journalism, of all the debilitating outcomes of digital technologies, the loss or destabilizing of small hometown newspapers has had a profoundly poor effect on community and social discourse. Honestly, most Americans don't care enough about most things to ever engage in large-scale civil war. It is the fanatic fringe who wants to fight. Everybody else just wants to create a better world. 8:00 All respect to Garland, but Boris Johnson also came up AS A JOURNALIST. Failures within the "4th Estate" are as responsible for our dysfunction as anything else.

Alex, a man who seems extremely uncomfortable in front of the camera but with conviction in his words, an amazing writer, some of my favorite films, also the husband of a crush in my teens, not sure if I am more jealous of him or her (Hi Polo).

You cut off the most important and interesting point for what? Fast food commercials?
Big business in the press and in general would be a key contributor to a Civil War. They trivialize EVERYTHING.

That last thing he said was one of the most profound. Every person who is at least trying to be a decent human being has some loonie out there claiming to represent them, and has to grapple with other people saying, “Oh, you’re _______ just like those creeps over there, I already know what you think, what you believe, how dumb you are...” They aren’t interested in being corrected either. When you say you’re not like those people, folks roll their eyes and say, “Oh, #notall_______,” and still won’t listen.
If you’re reading this and can’t think of any situation where someone misjudged you this way, you’re probably either an extremist or someone who doesn’t do much of anything.

    I watched the film.
It was sobering in a terrifying way.

We live is a strange world now. Even though it is fictional the possibility is more stronger than ever before. Remarkable I remember an HBO Original film called "Second Civil War" which was a comedy and satire since everyone said not likely to happen. Now we have another film suggesting another Civil War in the United States and now it is a serious film ko longer something to laugh but to ponder.

I never read the novel, but did watch the film. Riveting in many ways about the psyche of humans whilst traveling in foreign lands, in the wilderness. Along with the soundtrack, it actually shaped a big part of my adolescence. Now I would like to visit that story again and read the book.
