I can't stop watching this. Absolutely masterful. I did a cover of this song a couple years ago, with exactly the same goal of maintaining a high fidelity to the original recording, but didn't even come close to executing as well as this. If I may just point out:
* Having the balls to tune down to Bb. Awesome.
* 0:13 - the harmonics on the Ebadd9 chord. Perfect. Is that an overdub?!
* 0:16 - The attack on the Bb chord is exactly like the original. What incredible detail.
* 0:48 - He gets the drum fill while playing the melody. What.
* 0:49- Somehow you get the backstroke on the IV chord, just like the original, but get the melody, too. Unreal.
* 1:31 - The keyboard fill!
* 1:39 - The subtle change in the bass line in the second verse. Incredible.
* 2:37 - The walking bass line in the solo section
* 3:48 - The subtle change in the melody during the falsetto section. So well done.
* 4:45 - Final chord is dead on.
Seriously one of the best guitar arrangements I've seen yet.

I only wish Prince were alive to hear this arrangement. It’s something else!
Mad props!! As a Prince fan I have attended 48 concerts and even though I know people cover him as a show of love and appreciation of his music I really can’t stand 99.9% of them. This however I have to give much love to because you stayed true to the Essence and soul of the song without trying to add a bunch of nonsense in attempt to show your skills and upstage The original. Your skills truly showed through by leaps and bounds and I enjoyed every second of it. I’m sure Prince would have said well done as do I.

All of Kent's covers are absolutely brilliant, but this is probably my favorite. I love how he's able to capture the essence of every song just perfectly, and how he doesn't let his virtuosity (and let's be clear - he's *incredibly* skilled) overshadow the music, as so many other YT guitarists tend to do. Kent is an artist - *a musician* - and I really appreciate him for it. Keep it up, man.
I have honestly never seen a better guitar performance in my life ... PERIOD. I only recently came across your channel (couple of days ago) and have watched a few of your videos so far. Purple Rain is my favourite song of all times followed by Comfortably Numb (PF). I watched Prince perform live in Sydney, Australia in May 2012 and Purple Rain was played for over 20 minutes. That performance still rings in my head. I feel Prince left his fans too early.
I don’t have words to describe just how beautifully you play the songs. You keep the spirit of such musicians alive whilst also adding your own unique style.
For this song, if UA-cam gave the option, I would give a thumbs up for every second of you playing the song. That’s 298 👍 just from me. I look forward to more videos from you.

What a full, rich a clean sound! Just beautiful! I myself have been playing and teaching pro for 33 + years and man you BLEW ME AWAY! Great chops, tone, touch and lots of taste. I too am a fingerstylist and its a style that requires patience and lots of work, but well worth it. Yes YES! Peace.

Purple Rain is one of the most beautiful, soulful, heartbreaking songs. This arrangement manages to capture the emotion superbly. Well played. The video deserves far more views.

I can't describe the emotions felt on this one.
There are many good finger style guitarist, Sungha, Alex Misko, and etc...but this kid, this kid is not just a guitarist who has impressive skills, this kid is a musician, his arrangement and his execution are just right, I can listen to him all day, which never happened to the other finger style guitarist.

Can you hear the guitar isn’t in tune or are you tone deaf? It’s that low tuned E string. I can’t give a thumbs down though. The playing is too good. People that play can hear that out of tune junk and it makes it borderline unlistenable. Shame really. Great playing!

Hi Kent, I've always loved this song since I was a teenager. I'm usually very critical of interpretations and covers of this song.
However I have to say you did a wonderful rendition capturing the feel and soul of the song just like what I would think Prince intended.

Even though there are more technical guitarist out there than kent, i still preferred listening to him. The way he plays is just more enticing and relax, the dynamics are still there and it just blends well with the entire song without too much exaggeration.

Absolutely incredible job .. this will be my favorite acoustic piece for quite some time . Definitely a 9.5 . I believe I would've given a perfect 10 if the guitar was in perfect tune . The ever so slight sharpness of several strings is a bit like fingernails on a chalkboard to my brain because I'm such a stickler for a perfectly tuned instrument. . If the guitar was perfectly tuned I'll give this a solid 10 out of 10 incredible performance . Thank you for sharing your incredible skill
