I know exactly what that rattle is. I have a 2003 Trundra with 412K on it and I have that rattle on rough roads as well. The rattle is your brake pads rattling inside the calipers. The next time you hear that rattle lightly step on your brake peddle. Just enough to lightly engage them on the rotor and your rattle will go away. Good luck and I hope this works for you as well!
Huh, I definitely didn't think of that one! Unfortunately I did give that a try and I still heard the rattle. I appreciate the idea though, and thanks for watching!
@@JDMDriveway Sorry to hear that didn't help. I heard mine while on a dirt road. I kept driving with my foot on the brake with decent amount of pressure and just powered through the braking and the noise stopped on mine. Shucks, thought I had your answer. Good luck with your search and thanks for the videos. I am making changes, fixes and upgrades on my 03 based from what I learned from you....keep up the good content, much appreciated!
@skipmiller8309 you know what, I feel terrible! Haha I was just driving around today and played around again with riding the brakes over bumps that usually cause the rattle. This time it seems to stop the rattle! So this weekend or sometime soon, I'm going to take the wheel off and inspect the calipers. Hoping it's an easy fix with some grease and maybe a new retaining spring. But thanks again for the idea and I'll make sure to document it in a future video!
@@JDMDriveway Toyota recommends that you put a thin layer of silicone grease between the shims and the pad. Then a layer of grease between the pad and the points of contact from the pistons to the back of the pad. Then a thin layer of grease on the two pins that the pads ride on. This may act as a bonder or glue to keep the pads from rattling.....so glad this is work for you!!
love the videos, I bought my tundra back in 2004, from the dealer and approaching 300k miles. I have/had some of the same problems with my truck. your videos are a great reference for me to follow up on with my truck. keep up the great videos.
It really shows your excitement through the process. I’m sure you feel very satisfied with all the repairs and improvements. Congrats!!! And thanks for sharing, we are also learning.
11:25 In you mention rear windows on how they push back out when you close them sometimes the rubber seals for that window can get old and wear out and not be as firm and that's why they push back out
Love your videos man. Ive got an '02 I just about stole from the dealership 8 days after the planes flew into the side of the WTC Sep '01 Everyone thought the world was coming to an end. Its a Limited 4WD Thunder grey. Had 4 miles on it, every bell and whistle on it at the time and has 250k on it now and its indestructible. 1st week I installed a tinted bug shield on it. Looks great and great protection. Love the average joe type videos without trying to come off as a professional. Long time Toyota guy, had several. Keep them coming. Peace
Love your videos, and look forward to more posts. My wife owns a 03 Tundra and I’ve been slowly modding it. Would love to see in the future if you upgrade the cab body mount bushings. That’s my next project.
Yeah it's on the list for me too, I haven't found a lot of good info on it yet but there will definitely be a video when I get around to doing it. Thanks for watching!
Sal, your videos are so calming and enjoyable to watch. I love seeing your Tundra videos and I love how clean and beautiful the truck looks. Appreciate the knowledge you share with us FGT guys. I have a clean rust free 03 Limited and I adore it. Keep up the good work buddy!
I have a 05 Tundra Crew cab. I have driven it for 15 yrs daily and still love it like I did when it was 3yrs old and I bought it. Paint is fading and starting show age on the drivers side from the Texas western sun.
Oh nice, yeah I've seen those before. I personally prefer the OG look, but it's just cool that they're still offering custom parts for a 20 year old truck! Thanks for watching
Hey there, thank you so much for this follow-up, as well as the recommendations. Your videos are super helpful and down to earth. On my 04, the tailgate paint was starting to rust, so at the end of summer, I removed the tailgate, de-badged it, sanded and primed it, and then used color matched rattle can paint. Around here there's an O'Reilly's that mixes good quality paint. I then used probably 3 coats of 2k clear. (2 cans, buy extra to be safe) It took me two tries to get the color basecoat to look decent, but the result with the 2k looks fantastic. The nice thing about a tailgate is that it comes off and you can either suspend it from a garage ceiling or just put it on sawhorses and do one side at a time. For me, it took about 1.5 rattle cans of the color per application. Yours is a metallic finish, so it might be closer to 2. You can also use Duplicolor, which is easily ordered online, but you'll need more of the smaller cans. It's also very thin and runny and requires a bit more finesse. Of the four cans I went through on my first paint attempt, I had a bad nozzle on one of those, which leaked paint everywhere. There's an Irish guy who has a channel called Mad4Motors and he paints with minimal tools out of a garage and gets fantastic results. Paint Society is another awesome channel for tutorials. I'm definitely going to try some of your mods out. I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to mount a backup camera, which is why I came back to your channel to see how yours is holding up! The aftermarket handles don't seem to have a good reputation for build quality and materials. Take care.
Thanks for the good info about painting the tailgate! The tailgate handle isn't super sturdy to be honest, but it hasn't broken yet so that's good. Thanks for watching!
2 thumbs up on the video and upgrades. I have an 03 SR5 just broke in with about 100k 🥳🎂. FYI, there’s no need to remove the skid plate to change the oil filter. Just pop the hood and reach over with a plastic tub in place maybe with a rag under it and take off the filter and drop it in the tub. Easy Peasy ! 🤙🏼
I have an 04 double cab, probably a different setup because there's no way I could reach my filter from the top. Years ago I installed a Skid Row plate to replace the OEM one. It has a nice gap on the side where you can reach in and change the filter. The oil drips onto the plate and makes a mess, though, but a rag fixes that. The bolts were getting stripped out on mine as well, and my solution rather than Helicoils or nutserts was to just put a plate in that I almost never have to remove.
Thanks for your channel. You have given me a lot of great advice on upgrades. I am the original owner of a 2001 Limited Tundra with 4WD. I only have 123K on it. I love this truck and have used it from taking the kids from the hospital when they were born to teaching them how to drive. I like your wheel suggestions, the LED panel lights, the backup camera, screen interface replacement for the stereo/DVD player just to name a few. I don't think I have your mechanic skills. How did you learn how to do all those replacements and upgrades? Your delivery of the video presentations is clear, relaxed, and recorded with great visuals. Many thanks for all your help, but I have to go now because I just saw that you have a video on slow retracting seatbelts I need to watch. I tried washing them with detergent and it helped but they are still laggy.
That's great to hear, and super cool that you still have the truck and have seen it grow with your family. I get most of my confidence to try these upgrades from youtube too lol. I love how much of a resource it is, and I'm happy to contribute back to the community. Thanks for watching!
The exhaust does sound fantastic. Just some nice V8 sounds but not obnoxious. Personally I think the re-freshed fog lights super interesting. Sanding on light housings is something I always stayed way from due to being scared to end up with lights that are scrached or not clear anymore. But I love to see that your work holds up so well. Turned out great!
Yeah it definitely feels very counterintuitive to sand the headlights to make them clearer 😂 if you follow the process though, you can get some really good results! Thanks for watching!
I just bought my 2000 tundra a few months back. Previously I owned 3 T-100s a993, and 2 1997s. THis one is in much better condition than all of those. Someone took GREAT car of it. You warnings about old truck maintenance is a bit daunting, but I love this truck. I have something that is draining the battery, and have not figured that out. I have a work van an so I only drive the truck every 2 weeks or so. The battery is dead every time! Any suggestions I'm open. Thanks for the great videos!
That's pretty cool that you had a couple T-100s, I'd love to drive one some day. Bummer about the battery drain issue, not sure where to start on that one. Probably making your way around the engine bay/rest of the truck checking for good grounds. Best of luck with it, and thanks for watching
Great info on the 1st Gen Tundra. I'm the original owner of a 2001 Tundra, and still love it. Just keep up with that timing belt and water pump maintenance (as well as the normal maintenance) and it will be good to you. Been living with all the broken interior stuff you've fixed, but now I have the info and demonstration vids to fix them. Thanks so much for the vids. BTW, hows your seat belts? Mine needs help to return/roll back..
Thank you, it's always so cool to hear when original owners like you still have their trucks! My seatbelts are definitely slow to retract. I removed and pressure washed them about a year ago and that worked very well to clean them out, but they have gotten clogged up again over time, thanks for watching!
Adding higher quality spakers to your doors is good... except you need an external amplifier to actually hear a difference. Your music quality is probably higher but you wouldnt' know unless you maed out the volume from your headunit. If you got an external amp between your head unit and your speakers you'd prob hear a huge difference..
That's a good point. I've considered getting an amp for a while now, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Maybe I will and hope to see a big difference. Thanks for watching!
should do some paint matching! I plan on matching my front upper bumper (the black lip on the bumper) and my tailgate handle. Would love a video of this
I've definitely considered doing that! I'd most likely do the tailgate handle, but I'm not sold on doing it at this point. I'll make a video if I decide to though! Thanks for watching
I haven't wanted to take them off because I would hate to screw up the factory seal and maybe cause corrosion. However, I do really want to refinish them. They are just bare plastic, so I am looking into the plastic restoration kits. If I address it in the future I will definitely be making a video! Thanks for watching
Hey sal it's ethan idk if you remember us talking awhile ago but just wanted to let you know I'm traveling the US in my first Gen tundra and so far it's been great
Great recap video. Can you help me find the video of the door weather strips? I currently have an 01’ AC and a 05’ DC I want to change out the strips to new. Thank you for your help! Also I recommend headers and a cold air intake. I know on JDM cars it’s not always a huge difference but in this truck it changes everything in my opinion.
Absolutely man! I really want to do headers, just don't want to deal with the potential broken studs. I'll do it one day haha. Thanks for watching! ua-cam.com/video/HkfZBIZO62g/v-deo.html
Nice update and review Sal. I installed a Retrax tonneau cover on my 2006 DC. Love it. Have you thought of a tonneau cover for yours? Keep up the great contents Cheers
I have definitely thought about doing a tonneau cover, and I especially like the design of the retrax ones over the bakflip which blocks your view when it's all the way open. I'll probably hold off on it for now, but if I end up upgrading to a DC in the near future, I will definitely be getting one. Thanks for the suggestion, and thanks again for watching!
Hey Sal, I love the videos. I did the projector led upgrade and interior led’s behind dash and hvac. Everything works great but when I turn on my brights the indicator Doesn’t come up on my dash anymore that my brights are on. I also copied you’re head unit and backup cam. Really love the videos and upgrades I copied from you. Thanks
Yeah, at full droop they do touch the springs and you can see that in the install video I made. Doesn't seem to affect everyday driving though. Thanks for watching!
Is there any plans on a tutorial on how to replace that third brake light? Just bought mine and I have that LED brake light but cannot seem to make it come off. Thank you in advance and awesome videos!!!
I hadn't thought about it, but maybe I will. If I remember it correctly, its just the 2 screws on the outside and then it pulls off. Someone may have used some RTV gasket maker to seal it up. Without seeing your truck exactly its hard to say, but I would guess that's the case and you could just pull it off. Best of luck with it, and thanks for watching
Sal, thank you for responding to this request and for your suggestion. You actually hit it on the nail! Someone did use RTV and it was holding one tight. I did manage to remove it and replace it! Thank you!!!!
I got my ‘05 Tundra about a year ago and have put about 15k miles on it. At this point I would like to level the truck. I was wondering if the leveling kit caused the truck to handle differently in different types of weather? Or if it makes the truck drive differently in general. Thanks for the outstanding videos!!! P.S. I also put a Flowmaster Super 10 and an exhaust tip on my truck, and it is just the right amount of rumble to make me smile. 😁 Thanks again!!
Hey there, sorry for the super delayed response. I honestly didn't notice any difference in comfort or handling after adding the leveling spacers and I'd still recommend them. Thanks for watching!
@@JDMDriveway Your timing was impeccable! I’ve had to have the truck aligned for the leveling kit and I’m getting it back tomorrow. Thanks for the information, and thanks for the great content!
11:48 Bruh do you have a vid where you replace it? Mine seems like very difficult to get off. Are there nuts on inside under the roof cover? I don't want to damage it by prying to hard on the lamp fixture.
Is your bed liner "OEM". I know mine is since it has a big "TOYOTA" stamped into against the cab. But it don't cover the bed rails like yours. I'm curious, yours would protect the paint on the top part..
No, the bed liner is an aftermarket spray in kind. I'm not sure where the bed caps are from, but they are separate from the bed liner and I think they are OEM. Maybe check some junkyards near you to get a set for cheap? Thanks for watching
Did your bed cover come like that? or is it custom? I am debating on changing my bed cover. Also you have been so helpful for me, we have the exact same truck minus exterior paint and I have a 2WD. But you've done everything I've wanted to do so far! so I've just been following your footsteps! Just gotta fix some issues.. Also! check your hood latch and latch hook! mine failed literally 2 days ago! and they're really hard to get now other then off a junk truck. So make sure yours is ok! Keep up the good work! (side note! I maid my gauge cluster lights blue, along with the other interior lights! they're so pretty! and really easy on your eyes at Night!)
also, did you get that whining to go away from your engine? I could hear it when you were showing the old stock exhaust sound. You can hear it way better in the video where you actually changed out the exhaust. I've been trying to find out what that whining sound is for the whole year and I'm stumped.
The truck has a spray in bed liner which I think was done aftermarket. I'm pretty sure Toyota offered the drop-in plastic liners from the factory. I recently checked my hood latch when doing the grille so I think I should be good to go there. As far as the whining from the engine, I'd maybe think that it's the alternator or potentially the power steering pump but I haven't heard it on my truck so I'm not too worried. Thanks for watching!
hmm, that's gonna be a tough one. I would honestly recommend your local pick-n-pull. If they've got a tundra or maybe even a sequoia that might be your best bet. Not sure if anyone makes reproduction ones. Thanks for watching
I have a 2005 Tundra SR5 and the instrument only has 2 wire harness on back, no option to replace bulbs. Looks like LED is directly on the instrument cluster board. It is very difficult to find a replacement LED instrument cluster with brighter back light for my 2005 Tundra. Any suggestions?
Yep, unfortunately the 05/06 trucks don't have interchangeable bulbs. I don't have any suggestions, but maybe someone else will chime in. Thanks for watching!
I like the Trail runner grille sooooo much better. I hate all the chrome on trucks. If that were my truck I’d be plastidipping the front bumper or color matching it with paint. BTW you inspired me to swap out all my leds. Sooo much better now. I think I’m just going to keep upgrading my 04 rather than buying new and having a new huge truck payment to worry about. We’re getting closer to a new war unfortunately and who knows what that’ll do to our already shitty economy.
I think you might’ve mentioned this before but did you do your timing belt? You have the V8 so it’s more urgent for you but I have the V6 and I think I’m still rocking my original one at 230,000 miles. If so, what was that like?
Yep, I did do my timing belt at 208k miles or so. Definitely an involved project, but the instructional video from 1A Auto was a game changer and was really the only reason I felt comfortable tackling it myself. Thanks for watching!
I know I keep replying to comments 2 months old... 200k is a long time to wait before the timing belt / water pump service. Don't wait any longer to get that done! Thankfully, Toyota's recommendation of every 100k mi leaves a lot of margin, but 200k is really pushing it IMHO. A new truck or an engine swap is wayyyy more money.
Well, I have the 3.4 L V6, which is non-interference. So if my timing belt goes, I just need a new belt and it doesn’t hurt the engine. Otherwise I would definitely have gotten it done already. Money is tight.
Dang that would be sick, I don't know of any companies specializing in that sort of stuff unfortunately. May need a more custom setup to do that sort of thing. Thanks for watching!
That's a bummer because the in-line resistor from CO light is supposed to solve that issue. Most people who do aftermarket bulbs have to add a separate resistor to make them work. Thanks for watching
Try an "anti flicker" box that goes inline between the H4 harness and the bulb. For me, that fixed both the fog light quirks when toggling brights and the blue bright indicator not working. I wish I had known about it years ago.
I've read that it should be a bolt on swap, but I haven't tried it myself. I have definitely seen people do it on the facebook group though. Thanks for watching
Yeah, unfortunately there is basically zero legroom back there. Even with the drivers seat pretty far forward I can't sit behind it without being super uncomfortable. I did sit 6 people in this truck a couple of times believe it or not, but it was not exactly comfortable for anyone 😂 thanks for watching!
I didn't do it in my ownership, but a previous owner did a spray in bed liner. It's been holding up pretty well overall and looks super clean. Thanks for watching
Hahaha those are 2 very different driving experiences. I've heard great stuff about teslas though, I'm sure it makes a great daily driver.

Have you thought about taking off the fender flares and re painting them?
I haven't wanted to take them off because I would hate to screw up the factory seal and maybe cause corrosion. However, I do really want to refinish them. They are just bare plastic, so I am looking into the plastic restoration kits. If I address it in the future I will definitely be making a video! Thanks for watching
Hey sal it's ethan idk if you remember us talking awhile ago but just wanted to let you know I'm traveling the US in my first Gen tundra and so far it's been great
Yeah man of course! That's great to hear, and glad to hear the truck has been treating you well! Thanks again for watching
Amazing job on really appreciate the updates and information ❤
For sure, thanks for watching!
Double sided carpet tape for those aftermarket floor mats. They won't pull away any more.
That's a great idea, I'll probably give that a shot. Thanks for watching
Waiting until you get a mid travel kit from Camburg with fox shocks you can put 35’s with ease
Lol not sure if that will be happening, would be sick though! Haha thanks for watching
Great video! I really like the back up camera! Hey do you have wheel spacers? Any issues with lbj?
I don't have wheel spacers and *knock on wood* haven't had any issues with my LBJs. Thanks for watching!
Nice update and review Sal.
I installed a Retrax tonneau cover on my 2006 DC. Love it. Have you thought of a tonneau cover for yours?
Keep up the great contents
Cheers
Thanks
Huh I can't think of why the high beam indicator wouldn't work anymore. Glad everything else seems to be working out so far! Thanks for watching
Do your upper control arms hit the coil springs at all? I have bilstein 5100s with 2 inch spacers and i have that issue
Yeah, at full droop they do touch the springs and you can see that in the install video I made. Doesn't seem to affect everyday driving though. Thanks for watching!
Really nice truck. Good job!
Thank you!
@kriztofer9968 glad to hear it man! Sorry it took a few days to get back to you!
Love the truck. Just picked up a 2002 Tundra about a month ago. What wheels are those?
They're Vision Manx wheels in 16x8 and 0 offset. Thanks for watching
11:48 Bruh do you have a vid where you replace it? Mine seems like very difficult to get off. Are there nuts on inside under the roof cover? I don't want to damage it by prying to hard on the lamp fixture.
What leveling kit did you use ? love the truck. I have a 04 v8 tundra as well!
I had the supreme suspensions kit, but it is just a simple spacer so all those should behave and install the same way. Thanks for watching
I am wondering if you know anything about the tweeter speakers, in the doors. I am missing a cover trim, and cannot find it anywhere!! Thanks!
hmm, that's gonna be a tough one. I would honestly recommend your local pick-n-pull. If they've got a tundra or maybe even a sequoia that might be your best bet. Not sure if anyone makes reproduction ones. Thanks for watching
Good job👍Excellent videos
Thank you!!
Hey! I would be interested to o learn about this as well, I have the same model and the lights on my heating controls are practically gone…
Yeah the trail runner grille is definitely a sweet look. Thanks for watching
Does the cargo light button work with the new third break light?
Yep, works just like factory! Thanks for watching
Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Do you know any parts stores for aftermarket stuff for this truck I’m trying to make mine into a drift truck
Dang that would be sick, I don't know of any companies specializing in that sort of stuff unfortunately. May need a more custom setup to do that sort of thing. Thanks for watching!
I have a 01 tundra and did the led conversion dash light swap. Mine makes a whistling noise, how could I fix that?
That's strange, not sure about a fix for that. Hope you can get it fixed up. Thanks for watching
@JDMDriveway thank you for replying, guess I'm going to have to do some research
@ryderdrayton3840 yeah, sorry I couldn't help you out with that one
the CO lights cause my fog lights not to work, know of any solutions?
That's a bummer because the in-line resistor from CO light is supposed to solve that issue. Most people who do aftermarket bulbs have to add a separate resistor to make them work. Thanks for watching
Try an "anti flicker" box that goes inline between the H4 harness and the bulb. For me, that fixed both the fog light quirks when toggling brights and the blue bright indicator not working. I wish I had known about it years ago.
I have bucket seats in my 2001 limited access cab I wish I am wondering if the bench seats is a bolt on swap does anyone know if it is or not?
I've read that it should be a bolt on swap, but I haven't tried it myself. I have definitely seen people do it on the facebook group though. Thanks for watching
Is it truck lifted and if it is by how much?
Yep, it's got a 2 inch leveling spacer. Thanks for watching
Do you still have the grill?
Yeah, I'm still holding onto it for now in case I change my mind in the future
What kind of legroom do you have in the rear seats?
I love my tundra but have to say, No leg room. A full grown man of any size would have an uncomfortable trip........
Is it lifter or just leveled?
Just a 2" leveling spacer. Thanks for watching
Did you spray your bed?
I didn't do it in my ownership, but a previous owner did a spray in bed liner. It's been holding up pretty well overall and looks super clean. Thanks for watching
I’ve been considering spraying it thank!
What's the mileage?
Sitting right at about 240k right now. Thanks for watching!
Seats and carpet shampoo extraction video next?🤔
Haha yeah those carpets in the back need some attention. We will have to see, thanks for watching!
Man I love your truck!!!!!
If you’re interested in selling your grill let me know I’m interested.
I appreciate that dude! Currently not looking to sell the grille, but I'll let you know if I decide to. Thanks for watching
I love my first gen Tundra! Figured she's the best thing since sliced bread... until I bought a Tesla. Now I feel I'm cheating on her....
Hahaha those are 2 very different driving experiences. I've heard great stuff about teslas though, I'm sure it makes a great daily driver. Thanks for watching!
I have the same muffler. my wife hates it, I love it. It sounds like a mans truck.
Lol, it sure sounds great. Thanks for watching!
Lost me when you put LED bulbs in a halogen housing, good way to blind oncoming drivers
