Thank you Joe because of your thorough walkthrough of this car, my wife and I went to the dealership and bought and paid for a brand new 2021 Toyota Highlander Platinum. Definitely wish you the best and let’s get you to 1M subs!!!
My parents just got this SUV (platinum) and it is amazing!!! I love the features and how comfortable it is and we are really pleased with its quality and the overall experience.
My wife and I each own Toyota vehicles. A 2018 Tacoma TRD Off-road and a Prius 2, which is my wife’s by the way😀. My mom worked her butt off for 40 years, recently retiring, and just picked up her new 2020 highlander hybrid platinum two days ago. She loves it and smiled the entire way home, just as my wife and I did. We are happy for her and sleep well knowing she will be safe driving it. Great review and love the comedic parts too, hilarious!!!! Thanks and stay safe out there! I also shared your video with my mom so she could have as a learning tool for some of the features. 👍

As always, another great quality review. I like Toyota but not willing to spend $50,000 plus on one, especially since I don’t require third row seating. Rather spend $50,000 on a smaller luxury SUV. Nice looking vehicle though and you can’t beat Toyota reliability and resale value.
Joe you always find ways to put humor in your videos and that’s why your a great UA-camr. Not only that you put out great content as well! Keep up the good work sir!
Joe. Nice review. Thanks for doing these reviews for us. Love it. keep them coming. I like the Highlander as long as I don’t have to sit in the 3rd row. Def a zonk for that 3rd row. I also gotta zonk that hood prop rod. For 50 large there should be struts. Esp since my 2019 Camry SE has them.
After seeing what the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride offers in terms of features for the money all these other brands have to step up now. Especially on the top level trims they should be offering at a bare minimum ventilated 2nd row seats and USB connections in that 3rd row. And what's up with the prop rod for the hood on a Platinum trim level? No

Bought a new 2007 Highlander Limited. Also a new 2014 Highlander Limited. Thinking about buying a new 4th generation Highlander in 2021 or 2022. Perfect car for my wife and myself. I have three concerns about the new redesign. They did away with the rear lift window which was a major convenience, also downsized the gas tank capacity, and supposedly downsized the front seat area somewhat which would almost be a dealbreaker if I can’t fully stretch my legs out. At 6’2” inches and bad knees, I need all the room I can get up front. I really love the reliability of Toyota and would prefer to buy another one as we travel cross country and have had no major problems with these vehicles. But I will be looking at the Telluride also although I don’t know their reliability record.
I loved it, but it was missing some pretty basic options like auto dimming & folding mirrors and the height of the passenger seat is not power adjustable.
@Armando Sturzenegger I havent bought one yet because im planning of giving what i drive to a friend but she is not ready yet. The best time to buy is now because of the pandemic. You can get 0% apr and also bargain for the price
Your detailed description of what you like and don’t like are great. Your hand gestures are on point. I like this vehicle more because of this video. I used to write it off because I like the last generations design. I still like the last design better, but I will consider this model now.

Chris Like I said, that’s only you. This Highlander was designed on a Lexus platform which means it’s basically a luxury car. It’s not built to stand out it’s built for comfort. If you want something that stands out that’s here the Camry Xse v6 with the red leather interior option comes in. Toyota is successful because of their knowledge in the automotive industry. They know where they stand and who they make their vehicles for. They make it for everybody, they differentiate their trims for the difference in age gap.
Not bad the screen looks like should be in a fighter jet.The muffler hanging underneath looks weird.anyways Toyota can sell anything, they have the name.great review
Why do consumers purchase mainstream midsize 3 row crossovers? Presumably because they place at least some priority on third row seats. Otherwise, there's a whole set of 2 row midsize alternatives. The last generation Highlander was among the smaller 3 row vehicles (192.5" in length.) For 2020 Toyota has added about 2.5" to its length, bringing it close to the average size of its 3 row competitors.(Less than 2" less than a Telluride, an Ascent, or a Pilot.) Has that resulted in more interior room? Nope. Not at all. Toyota claims the Highlander's third row offers 27.7" of 3rd row legroom and 140 cubic ft of overall passenger space. That makes it the most cramped third row in entire 3 row category with less legroom in the third row than a Mustang's back seat. In terms of overall passenger space it offers more than only one competitor, the extremely inefficiently packaged CX-9 (134 cf). The KIA Sorento is the smallest midsize competitor in terms of length (189"), about half a foot shorter than the Highlander. Legroom in the third row is 4" inches greater than the Highlander (31.7") Overall passenger space is 154.2 cubic ft., topping the Highlander by a significant 14 cf. Of course, few if any so-called "family" 3 row crossovers offer truly accommodating third row room compared to a minivan. With the exceptions of the VW Atlas and Chevy Traverse, no competitor offers at least 33" of third row legroom. And it's common for reviewers to note that the third row of most CUV's is mainly for children. But kids come in various sizes, many close to or taller than five feet. Any human over 4.5' tall will have a difficult time cramming themselves in the third row of a Highlander. And kids have an annoying habit of growing taller each year. Even if a Highlander can accommodate a 10 year old, there's no guarantee it will work three years later. Finally, Toyota makes the absurd claim that the Highlander seats "up to eight" passengers. But that claim isn't based on actual passenger room but rather on the number of seatbelts in the vehicle including three (!) in the 3rd row. In fact, a top trim Highlander with captain chairs in the second row is effectively a four passenger "family" crossover. SUV of the year? Not if transporting more than 4 people is a priority.
I think Joe has the most out of pocket commentary I've seen in car review channels like when he was bragging of passenger area and he said "large enough to have a couple of kids or maybe you don't have kids, I don't know some of you don't deserve kids"
Well that was amusing. You said your wife was showing up in the mirror but I could not see anything both times you showed her. She must be wearing her cloak of invisibility. 😉
For the first time ever, I’m leaning more towards another family hauler based on outer design alone. Great review, but I think the big T took a step back with this new design. Too cartoonish. Atlas looks more civilized, Toyota has the quality. Decisions, decisions....
This redesign is far too little, too late. I love Toyota, but think this model is near the bottom. Toyota can't endure forever simply based on reliability. Sooner or later, they need to be competitive!
It’s a nice vehicle but I’m still not liking the bulging quarter panel design and definitely not the interior colors. Good job Joe! Nice job to Lori as well! 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
So far, that looks like the pick of the litter. I'm excited that Toyota has finally come out with a grill i can live with. Those Darth Vader grills were wearing me out.
We bought the 2021Platinum (same design as 2020) and you have to see the current generation in person to get an appreciation for it but I will say I did like the Gillette fusion 5 razor blade grill on the 2019.
Agreed. The exterior fit and finish on the 2020 Highlander at my local Toyota dealership was consistent but unimpressive---all the panel gaps were surprisingly large. 😟
Great video. In terms of the interior of the Highlander, I'm just not a fan of that sideways "Y-shaped" piece that flanks the right side of the infotainment display. It looks out of place and an after thought.
Armrest are skinny. I agree! under padded. So the 2nd row won't fold and fall and fold down in the compartment for a clean and clear entry to the 3rd row?
I shopped both the Highlander and the RX at the dealership. Similarly equipped RX is about 10000 more. The RX is a lot smaller. The second row is cramped. The cargo room is pathetic. On the other hand, the quality of materials and the sound deadening in the RX is superior.
I would zonk about not having a 12-volt at the tailgate at $51K. How am I suppose to pump air into my raft now... solution... plug into the passenger or driver side which is a pain. 😖😖😖
@@fcg243 it is, Toyota didn't put a 12-volt in the 3rd generation Highlander and then now, they missed an opportunity to finally add one in the 4th generation.
It is just my opinion, but for me this car is way too expensive for what they are offering. You can get similar features, and even more, on other brans for a few thousands less.
Internet says 8 inches. Which is competitive (Explorer and Grand Cherokee have more though). I'm guessing what you're seeing is design based.. and I kinda see that too. Has more of a minivan shape to my eye..and that awful crease on the side? 🤦🏼♂️
This is my biggest problem with the look of the Highlander. The 4Runner looks so much better with the added lift. I want to love it, but it looks so meh.
I test drove both. The Lexus similarly equipped is more than $10000 more. However, the Lexus is more quiet and luxurious. The tech features are about the same. The Lexus is much smaller both in passenger and cargo space.
As we live inside, the Highlander seems to disappoint...some good ideas but check out the headliner material...surely not the ultra suede of the Korean twins...tho probably feels better the my sis's '17 Caddy cx5 premium luxury...sad GM product for interior finishes!
Armando Sturzenegger i was thinking this rather looked good both inside-out. and every reviewers rate this quite high. I hated Toyota due to Scotty Kilmer. At least there’s something new to the book.
Love the video Joe but I think Ford,Chevy and Dodge beat them out by a mile. I don’t wanna sound like a hater but I’m just saying you know, they really did step it up I’ll say congratulations to them.
Not in longevity and resale departments. Toyota buyers want rock solid reliability before they want features. The big three deliver the latter, but not the former.

Joe, keep up the good work!
I thought no exhaust tip was going to be a zonk 😃
I feel your pain.
Great video.
In terms of the interior of the Highlander, I'm just not a fan of that sideways "Y-shaped" piece that flanks the right side of the infotainment display. It looks out of place and an after thought.
Watching at 330am because I can’t sleep
Armrest are skinny. I agree! under padded. So the 2nd row won't fold and fall and fold down in the compartment for a clean and clear entry to the 3rd row?
Isn’t the Lexus RX also 51k. Why get this when you get a Lexus - in terms of styling.
Cuz you getting the base rx and this one is fully loaded, you can't get rx fully loaded for 51k
Jankuba Kromah The 2020 Lexus RX 350 F sport is 49k ...... the base starts at 44k
Jankuba Kromah base rx is 45k, 51k rx with good options is way better than this
Does the rx has 3rd row seats?
I shopped both the Highlander and the RX at the dealership. Similarly equipped RX is about 10000 more. The RX is a lot smaller. The second row is cramped. The cargo room is pathetic. On the other hand, the quality of materials and the sound deadening in the RX is superior.
Best reviewer in the game. Keep up the good work!
Raiti loves every ride he reviews
Bobby Singh not true! Did you just see the Trail Blazer review?
Raiti's Rides ill check it out .. how about do some driving reviews like straight pipes
I would zonk about not having a 12-volt at the tailgate at $51K. How am I suppose to pump air into my raft now... solution... plug into the passenger or driver side which is a pain. 😖😖😖
That’s crazy. Even my 2020 RAV4 XSE Hybrid has a 12 volt outlet near the JBL subwoofer. 🤦🏻♂️
It’s alright
Thank you so much for the great review. I'll visit my local Toyota dealer as soon as it's reopen....
Joe, seems that the Highlander sits low. Seems ground clearance is low. I don’t like that brown and beige. Overall it’s nice.
I want to love it, but it looks so meh.
is the highlander ride / quietness same as the Lexus RX350? For 50k the price of this is in Lexus territory
You getting the base, this one you getting fully loaded, this one have more the same tech as the fully loaded Lexus
I test drove both. The Lexus similarly equipped is more than $10000 more. However, the Lexus is more quiet and luxurious. The tech features are about the same. The Lexus is much smaller both in passenger and cargo space.
Terry Wong thanks for your review. I was having buyers remorse thinking that i could have gotten a lexus RX 350 instead
As we live inside, the Highlander seems to disappoint...some good ideas but check out the headliner material...surely not the ultra suede of the Korean twins...tho probably feels better the my sis's '17 Caddy cx5 premium luxury...sad GM product for interior finishes!
No... the 2020 palisade limited is.
Thank you Joe and especially Lori for sweating....by the end of the video I was so hungry I had to grab an 🍎. I wish I could have a twinkie or Nachos.
Thanks for letting us share it with you! I really appreciate the support!
You apparently are missing Little Debbie cakes! You mention them a lot!
Damn! 3 Big Macs and a bottle of soda!? 😆
Great review as always 👍🏻
Thank you so much for letting me share it with you!
one of the few Toyotas I respect.
Armando Sturzenegger i was thinking this rather looked good both inside-out. and every reviewers rate this quite high. I hated Toyota due to Scotty Kilmer. At least there’s something new to the book.
This, the Avalon, the Yaris (Mazda) and the Land Cruiser. Maybe the 86 and the Tacoma. Anything else?
nsbioy to me it’s this, Land Cruiser (Patrol is Underrated), Alphard and Camry
Love the video Joe but I think Ford,Chevy and Dodge beat them out by a mile. I don’t wanna sound like a hater but I’m just saying you know, they really did step it up I’ll say congratulations to them.
Not in longevity and resale departments. Toyota buyers want rock solid reliability before they want features. The big three deliver the latter, but not the former.
Thought it was a minivan at first joe.
Aren't they all.
