I wanted the bench seat in the middle so I ended up going with the 2020 Highlander Limited instead of the Platinum. I love it! And for the record, the Limited does have the optional 12.3" display I have on mine.
If you cut to the chase. the Highlander has a higher resale value and is more dependable than the other one you compared it to. You can easil get 400k to 500k miles out of this vehicle if you take care of it.
Daniel Gross “I would never pay extra money for a sunroof! “ - “I would!”. That’s the exact same conversation I had with my wife not that long ago haha. Guess who drives a truck with a sunroof now :|
You guys are AWESOME. I like the way you present us a new vehicle. A totally different way altogether than anyone else but yet you touch on ALL of the key points from a buyer’s stand point AND you have no problem to point out what you like or don’t like even if you agree or disagree on each other’s comments, which I like very much so. Keep up the amazing work you guys 👌☝️👍🙌.
10:09 - In the U.S. we can option the bigger screen on the Limited. But - Toyota made a mistake by not allowing the *entire* 12" screen space for Apple CarPlay. I don't want to see the HVAC controls while I'm navigating. Give me a button to pop them back up on the screen momentarily, but let me use the entire space for navigation the rest of the time. Nice review, keep up the good work. I especially appreciated you contrasting it to the Telluride/Palisade twins.
Interesting review. I wanted a Palisade so badly, but test driving them and then the Highlander, there was just too much difference in the fit and finish, solidity, etc., we had to get a Highlander. Couldn’t love it more. To each their own, I guess, and we can all be happy!
Excellent review; the best I have seen on the new Highlander. Two comments about the vehicle: why is Toyota incapable of better packaging the exhaust piping so it does not hang so low -has been an issue for years on the old platform and they carry it over on a brand new platform??? And that silver plastic trim on the rear bumper is just an eyesore.
Grey plastic lower bumper the norm on many new SUVs these days. It's for scratching I think, looks better scratched then gloss black. And supposed to give it an "off-road" look.
Nice review of a great product. I'm totally awaiting your review of the IS 350 F Sport that's upcoming as I own a 2018 IS 350 F Sport. Yes, the vehicle is dated in terms of technology as well as powertrain, although the old reliable 3.5L V6 is no slouch and that vehicle's handling is superb. I am looking forward to seeing what Lexus has up its sleeve for the vehicle's upcoming refresh and forthcoming fourth generation/iteration of the nameplate. I am SUCH a Lexus consumer now after owning German vehicles during my teen years and early twenties and experiencing a host of mechanical and electrical problems with the vehicles (BMW and Audi). Now that I'm in my thirties, I have totally jumped ship and this is my third Lexus product and I have not at all been let down by these incredibly built vehicles.
8:04 Yes! Why don't manufacturers allow the bench in the top trim? In mainstream vehicles in the U.S., *everyone* does this with the exception of the Ford Explorer, where you can option the bench seat in any trim. Please! Tell manufacturers that we don't want to pay $50,000+ for a 4-seat vehicle (let's face it, the 3rd row of this 2020 Highlander is really not usable for anything but kids or if adults, VERY short drives.) But wait, there's more! The center seating position in the bench seat in the U.S. is as hard as a brick! It's VERY uncomfortable. Maybe the one I sat in had especially hard foam in the center, but my point is, even with the 2nd row bench seat, I wouldn't force someone to sit there for long drives due to the poor comfort. What happened Toyota????
The exterior design is a big step from the previous, but still plenty of room for future upgrade. Toyota and Hyundai/KIA are getting it right recently.
Love you two having different point of view and I agree with both in diferent way, I think Toyota used great material in the cabin but feel short in the design layout, the exterior design it wasn't a wow factor comparing with other but is a huge step forward with the previous version, in my personal preference I like a SUV robust and adventure design and I think the previous generation has more SUV type feel
I am looking to buy a used one and still a used 2021 Toyota highlander limited platinum costs 54k CAD with 45k kms. So just like you said these highlanders have amazing resale value.
I will look forward to seeing your post on Infiniti QX60 and how it compares. Keep up the great work. I miss Driving Television, I personally find Motoring TV staid and bland, just my opinion.
I find this to be another wonderful product from Toyota, albeit ‘soulless’. It was everything, it looks the part ... great reliability, etc. But something is missing. At $56,ooo+ (loaded Platinum) this ‘styleless’ generic people mover is terribly expensive. The upcoming Genesis GV80 (base) is only a small stretch more, but it will be overflowing with style and uniqueness. This Highlander will be a great SUV, but this category is getting quite tight. And I don’t think ‘reliability’ is enough at this price point, especially as many of these vehicles will be leased. I would not dismiss their Korean competitors, as they are offering quite a lot of value, too... with ‘Style’ being a “Free option”. Thanks, to both of you, for another video
I did note ... ‘base’ GV80 didn’t want to mention that 3rd row stuff, as the ‘loaded’ platinum would only be available in Captain chairs. So... it may have made my point moot. But I agree,. $80 grand! Is insane There are so many other options.
Agree with the seat option. In my area in western US dealer preorder options that sell in our area. All models are 4th. Limiteds come with 12.3 screens. Limiteds come with bench seats and Platinums come with captain seats. One deference between Telluride and Highlander you did mention is Highlanders are quieter that Tellurides. One wishlist on the 12.3 screen is to allow 2 panels. You are stuck in a minimum 3 panel configuration
Brand Loyalty comes from Toyota's quality, reliability, and so on. That's why the resale value is so good! Don't judge only by what you see and think is good. But by proven experience and the reality. Any other brands may be good to drive for up to five years. But, Toyota will last a lot longer.
Best feature on the outgoing model was the rear glass window access. You just pop it independently of the rear lift gate. Gone in 2020. I’ll keep my old HL. I like it better. Good review guys!
The Hyundai Palisade has a digital dash and a really nice interior however the Palisade is not a Toyota and the top of the line Palisade is in the same price range. I would go for a Hybrid or the Premium model Highlander over the Top model Palisade. Resale value
Allan Sonac drive both. My father who bought Toyotas for 50 years bought a Palisade Limited over the Highlander. No contest for him. He said you can’t compare the two. Most of us who owned Toyotas for a lifetime can tell you that they’re not what they use to be in quality
Korean quality doesn't even compare to Japanese quality. The new Palisade and Telluride admittedly _look_ great but we'll see if they hold up after a few years on the road. We _know_ the Highlander will.
Carlos Guevara haha Tell him to check American korean or german cars in comparison to Toyota Toyota Lexus are number 1 in reliability quality dependability
@@godfatherNYC We'll see about that. My 2020 RAV4 is only 8 months old and it's already had 3 recalls. Fortunately it wasn't affected by the poor engine block manufacturing recall.
Hello, love your videos, I would like to point out BSM. In all Toyota SUV s BSM signal is only flashing but making voice signal, like line traffic assist. What is good to BSM to flash on highways with 100 km speed!!!. I did complain to Toyota in 2017 after my purchase, but I see they still cutting corners
Great review! I’ve been looking at the new Highlander as my next family car! And you guys are such a cute couple! At 10:16 such a true gentleman letting your wife talk and not cut her off😂❤️
Good review, yes you're the odd man out, gotta have a sun roof at this trim level. My issues are no power folding mirrors and you can't take advantage of the 12.3 inch screen by allowing your favorites to take up the entire screen at this price point. However, the hybrid is a game-changer. If I were going for a V6, I'd go with the Telluride or Palisade.
I'll give up some luxury for reliability. Toyota may not look as nice inside as the Kia/Hyundai BUT, I bet the Toyota will run forever. People that want a bigger screen, etc will just end up paying more for repairs later. Nothing wrong with an 8 inch screen.
My sister has a Telluride. I bought the Highlander because of the reliability alone . I prefer function over form. The chassis on the Highlander is a hair firmer and handles a little flatter on curves . Hyundai and Kia wallow much more . I find them to be more style over function . Finally I know Toyota reliability . The Koreans are good but I don’t want to experiment with them so I chose a given in the Toyota . Regardless I think people will be happy with whatever they choose
@Jean Toronto Raptors Because people buy Toyotas, whether they're good or not. Has nothing to do with which one is best. The Korean twins are best, by far.
Highlander is an excellent vehicle because it’s been in the market since almost 20yrs do have the legacy behind it but what Kia have done with telluride is that it covers all the flaws that highlander have that is space, price and more value with technology. Kia is also getting up there on reliability ranking and it’s all about taking care of the your vehicle apart from reliability edge because it’s been out there for so many years telluride wins and you have to drive both to compare them.
Lots to choose from among mainstream midsize SUV's. So many, in fact, that the group is really two categories: a group of smaller 2 row crossovers that range in length from 188" to 192" in length and a group of larger 3 row crossovers that range from 195" to 204" long. There are a couple of exceptions, of course. The two row VW Cross Sport is 195.5" long, half an inch greater than the Highlander. And the KIA Sorento at 189" in length offers three rows of seats. Other vehicles, however, fit rather neatly into one of the two categories. Smaller SUV's with two rows and larger midsize crossovers with three row seating. So why choose a three row SUV? Presumably because a consumer wants a vehicle with a usable third row on at least an occasional basis. Of course midsize crossovers as a whole have cramped seating in the rear. With the exceptions of the VW Atlas and Chevy Traverse with over 33" of legroom reviewers typically describe seating in the third row of most vehicles as suitable mainly for children. But there's a difference between "cozy" and ridiculously cramped. And on that scale the Highlander is by far the most ridiculously cramped. Despite adding about 2.5" of overall length to the 2020 Highlander to put it at 195" long, Toyota added virtually no space to the third row. At 27.7" of legroom it offers 2" less than the cramped Mazda CX-9. The KIA Sorento, half a foot shorter than the Highlander, has a third row with 31.7" inches of legroom, four inches more than the Toyota. To get an idea of how limited the room in the third row of the Highlander is, a Ford Mustang provides 30" of legroom in the back seat! And it doesn't stop there. Toyota makes the ludicrous claim that the Highlander has room for seven or eight passengers depending on whether a bench or individual captain chairs are fitted in the second row. (Top trim Highlanders offer only a pair of captain chairs.) But that claim is based on the fact that Toyota fits the third row with three seat belts while rivals more realistically fit their back rows with two. Claiming the third row of a Highlander can accommodate three average size human beings is a cruel joke. Finally, even if one grants that the Highlander's rear seat is suitable only for children or Munchkins from the Wizard of Oz, not even all children can be reasonably accommodated. Those in infant or child seats shouldn't be seated in the third row for safety reasons and because installing/removing those seats is especially difficult. And even if an average nine year old can be accommodated a 12 or 13 year old may not be. As parents know, kids have an inconvenient habit of growing taller year after year. So even if one can fit a kid or two in the rear seat of a new Highlander, two years later that may be impossible. Apparently Toyota has recognized the Highlander's problem even if they don't admit it. While almost all other manufacturers offer two SUV's in the midsize category, a larger version with three rows and a shorter two row version, Toyota hasn't done so. Until now. The recently announced Venza (nearly 187" in length) gives those who prefer a midsize two row Toyota SUV an alternative to the Highlander. It will be interesting to see if the Venza significantly cannibalizes Highlander sales. I'm betting it will.
You guys are usually awesome, except your comment about Kia versus Toyota. The one thing you do not mention is that Toyota is known reliability. Kia uses old school technology, which has not been updated, nor can be proven reliability to the standard of Toyota.
The styling has grown on me. For a suburban style commuter suv. But still looks more suburu than toyota to me. Good to see the cheap plastics are diminishing. Toyota what can you say reliable. Sells.
My new 2020 Highlander is the loudest car I have ever had with respect to wind noise. It’s like being in a wind tunnel. For this reason I would look at an alternate vehicle! You can actually see the imperfections in the build that create the noise! 😢
hi beautiful people, another award winning video indeed! when are you guys going to review the 2020 pilot. No offence to you Zack a duo would be appreciated. i think Andrea is going nail a bunch things from an every day mom driver point of view.
As long as the 4 cylinder hybrid has enough power for accelerating/passing at highway speeds, etc. At least it's able to tow 3500lbs. Drop of over 50hp over last hybrid is significant.
@@James-il3tq 0-60 in 8.2 seconds is more than ample acceleration for a family sized vehicle that gets such incredible gas mileage. People who 'need' more speed or regularly tow 3,500 - 5,000 lbs can nearly double their fuel consumption and buy the V6 instead.
As an owner of the previous gen Highlander I can honestly say there's nothing about the new one that makes me want to trade it in. That being said I'm looking forward to the Hybrid review as that might be the game changer in the segment.
Highlander owners usually keep their SUVs until they die. You still see plenty of the first generation on the road. Most Palisade and Telluride owners will just return them when their lease is up.
As nice as those Koreans are, the track record of success goes to Toyota. They’ll have to prove themselves over a minimum of 5 years before wee can see who wins. My money is still on the Highlander
Not really. Toyota has a few major problems with some of their vehicles and they’re taking their sweet time on fixing them. The company is not like it used to be.
That may have been true 10 years ago, but I dont think so anymore. Toyotas are having more issues and recalls now than ever before, and Kia is getting much better. They are pretty equal as far as reliability is concerned.
Why don't manufacturers offer a bench in the second row of their top trim SUV's? Simple. Market research suggests that consumers with large families at home who need room for 7 or 8 passengers typically have fewer $$$ to spend on their vehicles. Empty nesters and those with only a couple of kids at home don't need/want as much seating and prefer the luxury vibe that captain chairs in the second row provide. Therefore, bench seating is typically limited to low or mid trim vehicles. Of course, as noted in another comment, large families who need room for 7 or 8 passengers have MUCH better choices available than the Highlander.
don't know about everyone else but cant stand the 'divorced' media controls on the steering, they should be all on the left stalk , since if it were on the right i'd reach over w/ the right anyways and adjust what's needed.
You wonder why the upper, more luxurious trim has Captain chairs? You've just answered your own question. Captain chairs are more luxurious hence why they're in the more luxurious trim. The ordinary, less luxurios bench seat is therefore in the lower, less luxurious trims. You're welcome.
I've just test driven the 2021 gas version and it stll accelerates well (I have a 2014 Toyota Highlander V6) but it also still has a lot of torque steer. Tires have become narrower (235mm wide) compared to my 2014 Toyota Highlander (245mm wide)
I almost feel even on the Platinum trim that Toyota wants to reserve some of that luxury features & touches which you see on the Palisade/Telluride for the next generation Lexus RX. Hyundai seems to be more generous in this regard of giving more for the same money than Toyota does. That said the Highlander does seem more utilitarian & would likely hold up better to the daily usage and abuse families will throw at these kinds of cars. That being said, I feel like the Subaru Ascent does this even better if at the cost of feeling a little cheaper.
rear tailpipe looks like something 20yrs ago.gotta do better than that.specially a platinum model.yes Toyota has that great reputation. might of been impressive 15 or 20 yrs ago.but nowadays theres no real lemons anymore it's all good quality and reliability. just a matter or preference.
I have to disagree in one particular instance and that's when her husband commented that Toyota was trying to achieve a more elegant/lux.tail light design & Andrea had to add her two cents by disagreeing calling it a more athletic look. In my opinion He was totally on point & she was wrong. TBH, I'm more interested in his thoughts & overview than hers, he's the professional & she's just the pretty face.
@@gregholman2930 Really? Maybe you should pay more attention to her opinion instead of good looks. Agree or disagree, Zack as good as he is as a reviewer most likely brings Andrea for a second female opinion. Clearly by your comment there are differences of opinions in car buying between male and female. It's a car review not the vehicle they own and or they may or may not purchase themselves. Good thing they are both testing. Lastly I also respect Zack for the occasional time he reviews with his boys. Some base their buying decision on their family not a selfish egonistic it's all about me attitude. Women do buy as much as men. So Mr. Holman, buying a vehicle is the second biggest purchase at least receive another point of view. She is not wrong she's stating her opinion which generally is spot on in my opinion. If Zack allowed me, I would take her along to test drive a vehicle anytime. No one is wrong here they reviewing based on their audiences which includes accommodating families not a macho man buying on comestics
For some reason, Toyota might be pretty reliable brand but they just don’t tick all the right boxes. Always seems something is missing or something is quirky. Or perhaps, just disproportionate. Interior design could have been so much better but it’s just not as appealing for a brand new model. Camry too seem to have the same story. Great on the outside but interior is just disappointing. Perhaps, I’ll go for Honda that does best of both of the worlds.
Just saying that because it's a Toyota or do you actually have numbers to back that claim up? 2020 Highlander sales #s vs 2019 or 2020 Palisade/Telluride sales #s please.
Dennis Xu I’ve seen these things everywhere. Just went to the dealership the other day and the one person there was buying one. They’re definitely selling a lot
I bought this car an pease don't compare nothing on this car to a Lexus. Doesn't compare to many flaws in this platinum version. Stick to lower models on the 35k range. 55k for this platinum version is not worth it.

Now for a Highlander Prime please!
Good job!!
Thanks!
Love my 2020 Limited AWD. Torque vectoring rear makes for very good handling. Doubt if the Korean cars have this.
hi beautiful people, another award winning video indeed! when are you guys going to review the 2020 pilot. No offence to you Zack a duo would be appreciated. i think Andrea is going nail a bunch things from an every day mom driver point of view.
Wait for the #Hybrid. The Highlander Hybrid will get better city mpg than a regular Corolla or Civic. That is a phenomenal achievement.
Actually I prefer the 2021 Toyota Venza AWD Hybrid
As long as the 4 cylinder hybrid has enough power for accelerating/passing at highway speeds, etc. At least it's able to tow 3500lbs. Drop of over 50hp over last hybrid is significant.
@@xorbitman The more choices the better. I want to see a side by side comparison with the new and old Venza. The new one seems a lot smaller.
Doesn't the Highlander compares with the Kia Sorento?
As an owner of the previous gen Highlander I can honestly say there's nothing about the new one that makes me want to trade it in. That being said I'm looking forward to the Hybrid review as that might be the game changer in the segment.
me too. I'll wait till the Venza Prime comes to our shores
Unless you regularly tow over 3,500 lbs with your Highlander, the new Hybrid is the absolute 'game changer' you are talking about.
Wish you would review base models more often.
The thing is, the Highlander will last twice as long as the Palisade or Telluride.
Janet Rohrbaugh don’t recall any major issues in recent history. Please elaborate?
No the 12.3 “ screen is also available in the Limited Highlander, because I have it!
Not in Canada
Still love our 2016 model.
Am looking at this model, only concern is it is in top three most stolen vehicles in Ontario
Great review as usual :) I am just not a fan of the front end styling, or the design direction Toyota is going ..........
If reliability is more important than design, then go for it.
I don’t like to pay money for sunroof too, you are not alone.
At 5:45, you mention “lots of storage”. But you don’t show us? Please show the storage bins
Oh sorry. You showed it at 9:03. Thanks
don't know about everyone else but cant stand the 'divorced' media controls on the steering, they should be all on the left stalk , since if it were on the right i'd reach over w/ the right anyways and adjust what's needed.
You wonder why the upper, more luxurious trim has Captain chairs? You've just answered your own question. Captain chairs are more luxurious hence why they're in the more luxurious trim. The ordinary, less luxurios bench seat is therefore in the lower, less luxurious trims. You're welcome.
"BAM"!!!
It looks more like a Lexus than a range Rover velar to me
No 12v charger outlet at the 2nd and 3rd row unlike the Hyundai Palisade. Hard to install camera for the sides and back because of that.
It has a 12 volt outlet in the second row and the Hybrid also has a 1500 watt outlet in the trunk.
I've just test driven the 2021 gas version and it stll
accelerates well (I have a 2014 Toyota Highlander V6) but it
also still has a lot of torque steer. Tires have become
narrower (235mm wide) compared to my 2014 Toyota Highlander
(245mm wide)
Agree that sunroofs suck. Never use it.
He said he wouldn't pay extra for one, not that it's bad. I like the moon roofs. They let in a good amount of light.
They have made me cross cars off my list because my head ends up hitting the roof. I hate them.
Does the screen glare like the previous highlander did?
i will take mine in white with carmel!
rear tailpipe looks like something 20yrs ago.gotta do better than that.specially a platinum model.yes Toyota has that great reputation. might of been impressive 15 or 20 yrs ago.but nowadays theres no real lemons anymore it's all good quality and reliability. just a matter or preference.
You know, I am maybe too OCD? The stitching does not line up. That is, to me, important in a vehicle of this calibre and cost.
What Caliber? Its a mainstream car not a Lexus
You never sat in the 3rd row seat how is the leg room?
Very good and competitive in this category. Our son is 6'1 and he didn't complain about the leg room.
It's like sitting in a Mickie Mouse chair for kids. Other than that it's pretty good.
I hate sunroof. In Texas's sun, it is way too bright with a sunroof, washing out the screens of your electronics.
I’m with him, No thank you on the sun roof.
Andrea is always dead on in her reviews. Sunroof and all
I have to disagree in one particular instance and that's when her husband commented that Toyota was trying to achieve a more elegant/lux.tail light design & Andrea had to add her two cents by disagreeing calling it a more athletic look.
Thank you! :)
Thanks for the support!
@@andreaspencer9813 Keep them coming Andrea
Is this QVC?
Andrea! Wrist check? It’s beautiful ❤️
Good eye
Thanks so much!
If you really want to drive speedy, it's much better with sunroof off. In normal driving sunroof is fun to drive.
if i have money..its worth it to buy..
I agree, they hold their value, it's a no brainer when you look at it from an investment point of view.
It is a fail. We no longer have rear glass that can be opened separately from the rear hatch.
Have you two reviewed the Lincoln Aviator?
They did a review of it 7 months ago
Hate sunroofs
Lol.... "Oh, its a Subaru!" 😄
Yes they copied Subaru Forester grille
It looks better than the Korean ones..
Old news, give me some information on the 2021, its coming out in a month.....
Huh?
He is referring to the 2021 highlander XSE
If you don't need 7 seats my preference would be the new Hybrid Venza.
Perhaps, I’ll go for Honda that does best of both of the worlds.
this thing looks like a 49 mercury truck front end.
Yasssss
I rather liked much more 2019 design than 2020
nah the 2020 looks better
I wish they would have an option without the third seat
Thats what the new 2021 Toyota Venza is for. AWD hybrid!
Wireless location is dumb. It will play when open arm rest.
They need auto power fold mirrors!
People really don’t care abut this suv being smaller than the rest lol they selling like crazy
They’re definitely selling a lot
dygardion 91 Toyota doesn’t want to make the Highlander too large since it will cannibalize the new TNGA-F Sequoia.
one word on toyota, "reliability"...... i would get the base highlander over fully featured hyundai and kia lmao
It looks like they stuck a guitar on the dashboard. Kind of weird.
I bought this car an pease don't compare nothing on this car to a Lexus. Doesn't compare to many flaws in this platinum version. Stick to lower models on the 35k range. 55k for this platinum version is not worth it.
Very nice revew but that boxy car is very ugly for me.
It’s basically a mini van
Front and side look like the Subaru Outback.
😆
The Highlander is the number#1 selling SUV. So toyota don't have to do anything to improve the highlander. For now
Will never buy a car that does not allow me to option a second row bench. It's ridiculous to take away that option at the top trim.
Well thats how most of them are.
