The 4l80E is a great transmission and certainly has it's place. Once you need a trans brake, manual valve body, crazy stalls, do you really need overdrive and all the requirements that come along with it. Most of these people never drive them at hwy speeds but for some reason the "need" a 4L80.

Can't wait to see you do a full rebuild on a 4l80e. I just bought a jakes stage 2 kit to put in a 94 I pulled from the junkyard for my ls swap in the bronco

There is an exception to the tone ring in a 4X4 4L80E. In 1991 4X4 trucks was the only year an NP205 transfer case was connected to a 4L80E transmission. Since the NP205 does not have a tone ring for the speedometer the 1991 4X4 truck did use a tone ring on the output planetaries for the speedometer.

Fabulous content. I been looking for good information like this. I have a factory original 4L80E on a high mileage van that I have been thinking about rebuilding if it continues to throw a code. Thank you so much.

I prefer the Jakes shift kit, in my opinion its the best one out there.

Hey Shawn, I love your vids. Thanks for doing a 4l80e series. I am going to put a 4l80 into my 5th camaro ss I already have one from a 04 chevy express van 2500. I am doing turbo on the camaro need the 4l80 for strength. There is opinion on which year model to use because of the cooler line placment and the electrical connector for tight trans tunnels. Maybe do a vid on pros and cons on the different year models. The later models are said to be stronger but the older ones can be made just as strong.

Please do a video of changing the seals in that piston that's in the front.

I just rebuilt an early model 4L80E for my crew cab 4X4 truck that is lifted with 38" tires. Since the truck weights 7000 Lb. running a stock 800 RPM stall speed torque converter I did not want any hard shifts. The only mods I did to my transmission was rollorize rear output, Install thicker center support plate (with only 6 cage springs instead of 12), Remove second seal from center support, remove inner piston seal from direct drum, drill relief hole in direct drum, install heavier duty Trans Go cage springs in direct drum.
The only pump mods where Sonnax line to lube valve (with bleed off ports), install Jake's Performance pressure valve spring, and drill out pressure relief port to 7/32. The only mods I did to the valve body was plug the reverse port for the dual feed mod, install Trans Go O-ring end plugs (no shift springs), Install Sonnax plastic check balls, and drill out stock separator plate 2-3-4 shift holes to .086 diameter. I also did the Trans Go AFL valve kit as well.

I’m considering either a th400/gear vendor or a manual shift 4L80E for my 68 c10 with a 496 bbc. There’s tons of info on the interweb but a good part of it is quite contradictory. It would be great to see one of your in-depth videos on a manual shift 4L80E. I would trust anything you would put together. I’ll even send you a 4L80E for a test subject as long as you send it back when you’re finished with it lol.

Please show us the size of the bellhousing. So I know how much transmission tunnel i would need to cut out if I were to change out to a 4l80e. My car has a th400 in it from the factory.

Dang overdrive weighs 50 lbs more. That's crazy one "gear" weighs that much.

Great content Shawn. Does anyone make a transmision shield for the 4l80e?

Many of the independents, notably Studebaker and Willys were offering the Borg Warner T-96 3-speed Manual with overdrive as early as 1946. I have one in my grandmother’s ‘49 Willys Jeepster. Willys also offered the Saturn overdrive unit (goes in the back of the t-case) on flat fender Jeeps.

Think i'd rather have a build th400 with a gear vendor overdrive.

Gear vendor = waste of money and electrical complexity. An elegant 4l80e is simply better.

@@stevenkirk2563 how much of my transmission tunnel would I need to cut out? The car has a th400 already.

Thanks Shawn! I have enjoyed your TH400 content and even found it useful when I built my 4L80e. So, I hope you will have more 4L80e content in the future. I used my 4L80e in an N/A Drag Week car in 2022. I thought it was great for that application. During the drives between tracks, I had no problems cruising at 70 to 80 mph while pulling a small trailer when many Drag Week cars were stuck in the slow lane @ 60 mph because of their gearing. Would my car have been a little quicker with a TH400? Probably. However, I think the 4L80e is a great choice for a street-strip vehicle.

Looking forward to the 4L80E content. I have 2 of the early (91-96) units I want to build for street & strip.
