The Psychology of Felix Hugo Fraldarius (Fire Emblem: Three Houses)

- Felix Hugo Fraldarius has experienced a lot of loss and grief over the course his life, even prior to Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Since the death of his brother Glenn we hear from several people like his good friend, Sylvain, that Felix has visibly changed in a lot of ways and so that's what I want to talk about today. I'm going to dive into how Felix in particular is experiencing grief based on his grieving style, and how this grief has impacted his development based on Erikson's Theory of Psychosocial Development and Marcia's theory of Identity Development. To do this I look at his conversations with a slew of characters like Byleth, Leonie, Seteth, Ashe, and of course Dimitri and Sylvain! While I wish I could go more in depth into every single support conversation, these ones in particular give a fairly holistic and representative view of Felix's character as he appears in Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
I do want to note that all counselors will come at situations from different theoretical orientations, backgrounds, and belief systems. My opinions correlate with my own education and professional experience up to this point in my education as a Master's level counseling student.

Also I refuse to believe Felix hates Dimitri. He misses his friend and tries to get him back, but goes about it in his own brash way, rather than enabling him and hoping he finds himself again, which Dedue, Ingrid, Gilbert and Rodrigue do, which makes it seem like he doesn’t like him or is just an angry, little shit. That’s why I find his development on the Golden Deer and Church routes so significant. In those routes he abandons Dimitri, believing he’s lost beyond understanding. When the latter eventually dies in the most derogatory way, Felix blames himself, feeling like he should’ve stayed by his side and help him come back from the edge, which he does during the Blue Lion route. He truly cares about Dimitri, and all of his friends, but he doesn’t want them to die in the way Glenn did, because he doesn’t see the honor in that. And when they do, he shows how much he cares by blaming himself for not having been there to protect them
Felix is my favorite character in the game (alongside Linhardt, who I like for entirely different reasons), and I’m so glad this video explained his character in such detail that’s so easy to understand, because I sometimes can’t really pinpoint why I love him exactly and how I interpret his character. Great job!

Felix, Ashe, and Linhardt are my top three characters. All for entirely different reasons.
1. Felix for the depth of his character (I'd argue he's the best written character outside of house leaders).
2. Ashe because he's probably who I would get along most with if he were real.
3. Linhardt just for how damn relatable he is.
He loves dimitri so much this is so true
I feel like Blue Lions just has some of the most complex and interesting characters in the game. Slyvain and Felix are two of my favourite characters in the game purely because there is so much depth to them. Theres such a clear psychology to both characters and I love them so much.
Azure Moon has the best character development
Verdant Wind has the best explanation of the lore
Silver Snow is VW without racism and lacks a lot of revelations
Crimson Flower is not well worked so it just exists...

I think another thing is that since Felix lost his brother he wants to grow stronger and protect all of his friends. Since people like Ingrid and Ashe value chivalry so much, he wants to protect them in fear that they might die for nothing. Poor boy just doesn’t want to lose anyone else :(
He told Ingrid to get an husband, so that she cannot become a knight. That is inexcusable.
Yuwan Sorry for the misunderstanding! I was mostly referring to his A support with Ingrid in which Ingrid sees through him and identifies what makes him act the way he does. I believe Felix developed a lot over time (thankfully), but I also agree that what he said in that B support was just awful. It makes sense as to why he would act the way he does but it doesn’t make it okay.
If there's one thing I can agree with you on is that felix's b support with Ingrid he acted very rude to her and he shouldn't have answered with that.
But i can understand why that answer, since his brother's death, Ingrid seeks to emulate his brother's example and she idealizes the acts of chivalry as something honorable when the reality is that it is not so. Felix is right when he tells Ingrid that cavalry is not for her because she idealizes cavalry as honorable when she does not realize that the truth is not like that.
Even Dimitri explains to Ingrid in his support b that, about she should look for other example because Glenn's death was not really honorable, he saw him die and how he was dying, which Ingrid did not want to accept at the time and refuses to accept.
When Felix tolds Ingrid that the cavalry was not for her and that he preferred her to look for a husband, it was not because he was sexist, It was because Ingrid was questioning whether in a situation that requires action, she had to protect her home or she had to obey an order And she thought the logical thing to do was to obey an order, and remember: Felix is against blind faith. That's why it's hard with Dedue and with Ashe before.
An example of blind faith is Catherine, who in Crimson Flower her faith for Lady Rhea made her do questionable things, one of them was to burn down the capital of the kingdom. Also, i don't hate Catherine how person, but her decisions were mostly very bad.
Already after bringing that point, What Felix said to Ingrid was okay? Yes and No. It was right to tell her it wasn't meant to be a cavalryman, but i'm consent he was very rude with her. But that doesn't mean he don't appreciate her, in their interactions outside the supports, they get along very well. in time they have together get along very well. They're usually in the place of arms practicing, or Felix annoys Ingrid for being very gluttonous but in an adorable way. In the fishing tournament Felix talks about how Ingrid's face lights up for food, until I suspect he might be in love with her but he doesn't express it well.
And finally, in A support Ingrid makes herself the realization that she only wanted to protect her loved ones and recognizes that Felix wants to get stronger for the same reason as her. even if it doesn't seem like it, they somehow share the same life motivations, Only they take other routes, ironically both emulated something about Felix's brother, Ingrid the values of cavalry, and Felix his personality. The Duscur's tragedy hurts Felix and Ingrid a lot and they carry their duel in different ways like Dimitri. Only Dimitri's case is worse because he was there and he feels guilty about it.
& why he freaks out on Sylvain for taking an almost-deadly axe blow for him in their A+ support
This is a really interesting watch. Felix is such an interesting character to think about, which is why he's one of my favorite characters from Three Houses, and speaking as a psychology undergraduate it was super interesting seeing some psych theories being applied to Felix's character and development in-game.
I think this applies not only to Felix in the Blue Lions/Azure Moon route, but also Felix's grief being a major factor in why his fate in non-Azure Moon routes if he's recruited away from the Blue Lions ends up much more tragic. His fate in non-Azure Moon routes assuming he gets a solo ending is that he ends up living a meaningless and empty life as a wandering swordsman, slaughtering countless people mysteriously. His paired endings are largely more bittersweet as well. Especially if you see his monastery dialogue, it's clear that Dimitri being there is a big factor to his ultimate development and the best possible outcome for him. But if you take Dimitri away, then Felix never gets to have that chance to really have closure with Dimitri, especially in Silver Snow (BE Church) and Verdant Wind (Golden Deer), where Dimitri canonically dies a pointless death at Gronder. Felix is left wondering "Could I have saved him? Could I have stopped him?". Felix deeply regrets afterwards that he never got to have any proper closure with Dimitri, and that someone he was friends with since childhood is now also dead. You can see him vent more towards the end of those routes where he shows an eagerness to raise his sword against TWSITD and Nemesis as worthy opponents, showing he never really gets out of that feeling of focusing on battle to deal with his grief, which is only compounded by Dimitri being gone too. Not to mention CF where he basically opposes both his father and Dimitri, as well as possibly Sylvain and Ingrid if you don't recruit them, and while he's basically resolved to see it through, but he's not happy with the snap decision he made to join the Empire all because of his refusal to consider others' beliefs. It's what makes Felix such an interesting character to think about.
Felix also says that if he doesnt finish twsitd (and nemesis) that dimitri will never rest in peace
i always feel sad when people overlook his character and write him off as an asshole when hes so interesting hhggngh
That's a big part of why I wanted to make this because while on the surface he's rough around the edges, there are so many reasons why acts this way!

Sylvain isn't in the plans right now, but he's probably my favorite character in the game so it's definitely not out of the question!

I love Sylvain and I think his character is a lot deeper than people give him credit for. Is he still a bit of a shameless flirt under that mask of his? Yes, but there's so much more as well. If anything, dedication. He did ask Dorothea to marry him at least ten times if I remember that little epilogue blurb correctly.
CaleyWarrior101 I feel like Mercedes supports really strike the heart of the issue better. Even at C Support when she talks about crests screwing her over Sylvain immediately stops flirting to get her to take his back story seriously
I truly believe Sylvain, Felix and Ingrid are a reflection of the three countries in Fodlan.
Sylvain represents the Empire, his theme color is red and the burdens he has carried his entire life come from the same system Edelgard wants to erradicate. Out of the three childhood friends, he is the one who would most likely side with Adrestia.
Ingrid represents the Alliance. Her hair color is golden blonde, and her theme color is green. Green is a combination of blue and yellow, and it helps to visualize her ties with the Alliance (green is a much colder color than yellow, so I believe it was chosen over it so she wouldn't clash with the rest of the BL who for the most part wear blue). After all, the Galatea are distant relatives of the Daphnel.
Even though Felix is the one who's certainly the most negative towards Dimitri, and is also very vocal about his hatred of chivalry, he is the one that represents the Kingdom. The development of his relationship with Dimitri helps Felix understand the role he has to fufill, to become his right hand man. No one is more capable than him of putting Dimitri in his place when it's needed, and he doesn't have a reason to side with the Empire or the Alliance. He looses all purpose in many of his non-AM endings for the same reason. Felix is meant to become the next Shield of Faerghus, just like Rodrigue was. His theme color is blue so that really drives the point home
Blue Lions is the best, I like their cast so much. This game is my favorite because of how weirdly realistically these characters are handled. They have actual layers and hobbies and interests and problems and things that shaped how they are. You can pinpoint why they are the way they are. I love this game so much.
The game is so well written and diving into these multiple layers is so fun and interesting.
After the several analyses on Maruki's counseling, I feel something similar could be done with Seteth's supports. He's not a certified shrink, per se, but does honestly seem like the single most mature and responsible adult at the monastery, or the game itself. Obviously, they'd be heavily abridged in comparison, but it'd be interesting to see a more positive source of guidance after Maruki.
Rhea can also need an analysis, since there are so many dimensions to Rhea's psyche, fitting for the most tragic Character in the story and the perhaps most complex one.
I don't find Rhea all that complicated so I'm sure it would be interesting.

You are 100% correct. That's why I really wanted to do this video because I felt like he was such an interesting and unique character.
To be honest I get easily attached, so I love all of them.
Felix/Demitri ending is my favourite in the gane. Shows how he moves on and become friend for Dimitri again
I've noticed quite a bit of what you mentioned about Felix and his experiences with loss and grief throughout my many replays of Three Houses, so I really appreciated this video. I always assumed Felix never actually dealt with his grief, but he did...just not in the healthiest way for a while. But he does make the effort to correct that, it's just really subtle because overcoming lifelong flaws is a process. It doesn't happen in a fingersnap.
And that's honestly why I think Felix's detractors just assume he's an asshole who never changes and that the game excuses his bad behavior. Because we never see him outright bitch slapped or given a million lectures or a fancy therapy session that cures his issues, because his growth is so subtle. He's also a character in a cast of many, and while the game puts a lot into developing the characters it's not all going to be as visible and blatant as we may like. We see Dimitri come back from his insanity because he's the main character in his route. We see Bernadetta out of her room constantly in the War phase of Crimson Flower because she's been away from her abusive dad all that time. We see Marianne overcome her depression and suicidal thoughts post-timeskip because she finally knows she's not alone. Hilda in Verdant Wind stops being lazy because she's Claude's right hand and then at the end it's personal because her brother was attacked by the end boss so she wants to avenge his injuries.
Felix's changes are less out there. His monastery dialogue reflects them, and the Azure Moon route shows that beyond their supports he and Dimitri begin to reconcile.
Fandom just writes him off as either an asshole who gets away with it or a hot boy who deserves to get away with it because he's Sad. Which...ignores a lot of his character. He's not the deepest pit in the sand, but he's not a mud puddle, either.

What about Psychology of Blue Lions Leader Dimiri Video in Future? It will make a very interesting video, especially with his sad backstory, history with Edelgard and his time skip trauma. Also Dimiri shown to be cold, insane and suicidal in battle. But There's glimpse of Dimiri showing he still had a heart.
He said on a post that thats a big fish to fry and that he wanted to go in with something more easy

@@ThoughtBubbleYT I understand. Dimitri is a very complex character to analysis, especially someone who suffered with PTSD and Deep Trauma so it will take time to study him carefully. I can't wait, since it's interesting case study about a character who suffered deep mental scars.
I’m an English student who’s taking a video games as literature course for my upper level elective this semester. For my creative project, I pretty much decided upon signing up for the course that I was going to focus on grief in video games (and evening got it approved by the professor whenever I signed up in April - I was excited LMAO). I chose this because I lost my uncle to suicide last September and was expected to to not express my emotions and just be there for my cousins. I was going to use Three Houses as a source for my project but I was actually going to focus more on Byleth and how they express grief whenever Jeralt passes because it spoke so much to my own experiences, but you’ve definitely given me a lot to think about in regards to Felix. I would love to use this video as a secondary source if that’s alright! Incredibly well-thought out and spoken. I enjoyed it heavily.

Felix definitely has a lot on his shoulders, but I think that Byleth would be a really compelling character to look at in reference to grief as well. Good luck on your paper and in your degree!

It ended up being the topic of my first short essay & I got a B on it so I sadly did not choose to re-use the topic for my final project. my professor said in his feedback that it was too broad because I made the mistake of focusing on the blue lions characters as a whole instead of one or two but for my final project I wrote on lucina & medieval women in video games & ended up getting an A on that paper so I still stood with the FE theme lol
@@brynnharris5445 I think if you narrow down a bit to maybe Felix and Dimitri because most of Drimitri's grieving problem was seen in Azure Moon. They both have more examples than Byleth since its like maybe one scene you get a grieving Byleth and like one whole month and we don't see Byleth moving on with his life on the game. Dimitri would've been a better example along with Felix since it'd be a character death psychology essay. But congrats on that final essay from Awakening.
Also that elective is pretty interesting its way better than what my higj school teacher provided there was this extra credit activity to play a video or board game on colonialism and I honestly wished I had a switch at that so I could cite Tom Nook and the island.

Please could you also look at Ashe's grieving style in reference to his talks with Catherine, and grieving whilst being adopted.And how his grief conflicts so much with his naivete. I apologize if this is mentioned in this video, I haven't quite finished it since I don't want to spoil the felix/seteth supports. Ashe and Felix are my favourite characters. I just find it funny how they both went through similar things yet react so differently. I also found it surprising that Felix Ashe and Sylvain choose to stick with Dimitri when cut content shows Felix was supposed to defect, which I think makes much more sense.
I randomly stumbled on this channel, this vid was about my good boi Felix so i had to check it out, good essay, I'm subscribing! Felix to me was someone to avoid on my first route, but when i played his house and I got to understand what he was about and his story... He quickly became my 3rd favourite character (after Claude and Sylvain)

Felix is one of the most complex characters in three houses and I always love seeing him interact with others. He has so much depth to him. He wants to protect others, but is grieving over those he couldn't. He detests chivalry and the idea of dying for ridiculous causes. But he also loves his friends so much. He takes care of strays. He truly is a very caring person, he is just bad at expressing himself. He's so interesting and he's actually one of my favorite characters
And this is the reason why I like Felix as a character (and unit) so much.

Another amazing video with one of my all time favorite characters as the subject. I always had a feeling that Felix never really wanted to hate Dimitri at all since a lot of lore, backstory and everything else talks about how they’ve known each other basically their whole lives and were friends. But I understand that anger and need to blame someone all too well. It’s hard when you experience such a sudden and unexpected death at a young age for seemingly no good reason. I think part of Felix blaming the prince was with a passing so sudden and unexpected with seemingly no good reason behind it he, in an odd way, made Dimitri the reason. I think he needed a reason or way to explain why someone he deeply cared about was ripped from his life so horrifically and so suddenly. Maybe I’m wrong but that’s always what I got from it. As always, amazing video I hope you do more videos of Three Houses, especially with my beloved Blue Lions house.
I think that makes a lot of sense and ties in well with that intuitive style of grief and so he displays his grief through that anger and pinned a lot of it onto Dimitri as a way to rationalize and have an outlet. And thank you so much! The Blue Lion playthrough was my first route I took and so it holds a special place in my heart.

Blue Lions was the house I started with and as much as I love Ignatz, Claude, Yuri and Ferdinand von Aegir I will always hold just a little more favoritism towards my Blue Lions boys. It took a while for Felix to grow on me but by the end of my first Blue Lions play through he was by far one of my favorites in the game!

Hmmmm, that's very interesting and honestly a correlation I hadn't thought much about, but I can definitely see your point. While I wouldn't call him a "counselor" I do see him as a wonderful advisor and support (no pun intended) for the entire cast to help them to be able to empower and develop themselves. in games where we get many characters i mostly see people judge/make opinion on how they are in the game (not taking in what they have said about their past) by just the present story of them
As one that enjoyes viewing from many "angles" on characters in game (and people) it pleases me to know someone has taken time to view Felix more indebt

One of my favorite supports in the game is Felix and Flayn. Felix damn near explains how he doesn't even see a future for himself. He just wants to take his anger and grief out on enemies. Once he starts considering life afterward; he can't.
Flayn is one of the few characters that helps Felix understand there's a greater purpose in life for him. She helps him understand compassion again and gives him more to look forward too once the war is over. It's actually the only support where a character straight up questions and conflicts Felix's usual way of thinking and behaving by having a genuine conversation about it with him (besides Seteth).
Idk. I really think Flayn and Felix supports are pretty essential in learning more about both of these characters on a deeper level, but especially Felix. Definitely a personal favorite support of mine in the game.
Great video by the way. I'm taking psychology and I tend to do analysis for characters when I play games too in my head. Glad you went over Felix but Sylvain would be great psychoanalysis material as well.

also, personally i got a little distracted by the supports themselves playing during the video by just reading the supports instead of listening to you at times. made me have to rewind a bunch - maybe split up the scenes a bit?

To make another comment, basically any character in this game could have a video like this made about them. You have a lot of possible content you can make.
It's nice to see someone more sane than anyone in the FE community make a video discussing it.
I would be very excited to see some more Fire Emblem content, maybe some other characters you find interesting.

Felix is my favorite character from the Blue Lions because he may seem cold and uncaring on the surface but deep down he is an extremely loyal and caring friend. I also LOVE his supports with Bernadetta, Annette, and Lysithea because they are all *hilarious*
You've always been an insightful dude, so I'd love to see more of this from other characters in three houses, especially other house members. Like Marianne's depression, Edelgard's PTSD, or analyzing more "problematic" characters in how they're portrayed like Bernadetta or Jeritza .

Great work! I'd love to see more Three Houses videos. The one I'd love to see the most would be Edelgard, since her personality, her actions in the different routes and even her memories are all defined by her past trauma. As such, I think she'd have a lot to break down.
I actually haven't finished her route yet! From where I'm at though I definitely see A LOT of potential for making a video like this about her.

This was so interesting ! I'm glad 'cus Felix is my favorite character. Also, I think 3 hopes adds new informations, like the fact that Felix as a children was so polite, but after he takes Glenn's personality (like insults on everybody) and he says that it was Glenn who taught him that chivalry wasn't ideal.
I wanted to know what do you think about seeing Felix siding with other lords, the more interesting being when he stay with the black eagles. I know a lot of people think that BL joining El is out of character the kingdom is a cold spartiat place where crest and chivalry are above anything else so Sylvain, Ingrid and Felix joining the empire is not so weird (and Mercedes who hates crest and is from the empire). So what do you think of Felix in the black eagles ?

omg rhea, claude, flayn, seteth, edelgard, bernadetta, ferdinand, dimitri, ingrid, dedue. they need one of these
Then there is Crimson Flower Felix.....which is basically Anakin skywalker. Its the most ironic character to recruit because he basically becomes everything he hated about Dimitri, a murderer that betrayed and killed all of his friends and family.

There are anime cutscenes scattered throughout, though very infrequently! The one I use at the beginning here is when Byleth first gets to the Monastary!

I feel like the main reason people like them are just because they can relate to them, and not because they are deep characters or have interesting supports, which btw they don't. If you like them then its fine, people have opinions but it physically hurts me when someone tries to objectively claim that they are amazing characters. they can't hold a candle to people like Sylvain, lorenz, ferdinand, dorothea, seteth etc. Also there designs are also pretty weak which is a subjective opinion.

@@arman_llc624 Bernadetta and Lysithea are amongst the most powerful and useful Characters in the game and while I dislike Bernie's characterization, she is cute. Lysithea is also funny and actually pretty Sweet. Her supports with Claude and Cyril are amoungst the best as is her supports with Hilda and Marianne. Also stop throwing the opinion card, if you have so little confidence in your believes, no one will believe you.

"Married Annette or Mercedes." No, he married Ingrid, I'm still confused about how that happened but it did.
Well they are both strong independent characters, and Ingrid is described as a knight better than most knights so he could just be interested in her just because she's a good sparring partner who eventually becomes a lover. Eventually when they get their A rank, it was shown the Ingrid knows Felix all too well and understands his feelings.
With Felix it seems to be that he felt, that the people around him praise the death of Glenn and as such treat his death as something good and he, who looked up to his oldet brother and felt they insulted him by not lamenting how senseless his death was. Personally, I find Felix stand on it somewhat stupid, because his brother died protecting his best friend and unless he wants to imply that his best friends death is less important than that of his brother, he seems to misunderstood what his father meant. Rodrigue meant with the "he died like an true Knight" thing that his son died honourably and did his job as a guardian well, even though that sounds like Glorification, it's more a way to honor his last moment of saving Dimitri. Obviously they are still sad about his death and I doubt that Rodriguez praises the fact, that Glenn burned to death, though he could be a bit more sensitive about that. I do agree that glorifying death is not really always pretty, but there had been worse ways of treating death like viewing all deaths as sacrefice for a new and better world or that all suffering led to this Modern world and therefore it was good.
