      @@thinkerly1 Behind the scenes, Sweden has actually cooperated militarily with the USA ever since WWII. It wasn't talked about, part of it even top secret, and most Swede's lived in some unknowing delusion of "non-alignement/neutrality". I've considered it a dangerous policy charade for 40 years, since Russia certainly never considered us "neutral". And the past two decades, Sweden has more or less been a NATO member in all but name. Like interoperability of weaponssystems and taking part in excercises and operations.
      But I also argued that Finland had to have the last word on possible NATO membership for Sweden. And that's how it happened.

    • @RobBCactive
      @RobBCactive Місяць тому +7

      IMO, that's unfair and ridiculously simplistic. Politics is the art of the possible and the side effects of war on economies were always going to encourage a backlash against large aid with an appeasement faction. The US government chose containment and it is Trump & MAGA in league with Vladolf that have cut off the aid, that has encouraged the RF to pursue a victory.
      The UK government failed to ramp up ammunition production or make preparations despite being long on rhetoric.
      While in Europe they've had to realign energy supplies. Other countries in the world failed to join the principles sanctions and instead chose economic advantage of cheaper oil.
      Sliding carelessly into WW3 simply wasn't ever a popular policy, which is why defence of Ukraine through support, but winning slowly was the strategy chosen. The RF has taken drastic inconceivable economic measures as it slid deeper into madness, enabled by the equivocation of much of the world.

    • @gray100

Europeans themselves have had their heads in the sand for years always being reliant on the US to provide the manpower and weapons in case of security problems.

    It's easy to forget that Ukraine has been Russian for three hundred years and only independent for thirty. Naturally the Russian power elite still consider it their back garden and want it back under their control. However, it is clear that the Ukrainians have not willingly been part of Russia or the USSR, and have longed for that independence already for a very long time. They may be ethnically similar to Russians, but they have a language and a culture which is not identical. Now that they have so clearly expressed a wish to be part of Western democracy rather than part of the Russian Mir, so authoritarian and nationalistic, I think it would be best to do more to help them in their current struggle. Fear, more than parsimony, rules our response.
