  • Brig. Gen. (Retd) Peter Zwack Former Defence Attache to Moscow.
There's a growing internal tension in Russia. The population grapples with an inherent trust in their leadership and a desire to believe in their nation's narrative, versus the disturbing news they hear from external sources. The regime has responded by stifling dissent, but significant public resistance exists beneath the surface.
Brig. Gen. Peter Zwack gives his insight into the war in Ukraine and shares his experiences of living and working in Russia.

As for the Russian people, I have to say that I have had a dimmer and dimmer view of them the longer the Ukraine war has gone on. I have tremendous respect for those Russians willing to stand up and voice their displeasure with the war, who risked their safety and freedom to protest, or even those who have defected to fight for Ukraine; however, on the WHOLE the Russian population is and always has been sheeplike, reactionary, gullible, and submissive to authority. Until they find a way to unify, organize, and embrace a better national character that IS worthy of a democratic, republican form of government, Russia will always remain a corrupt, authoritarian regime and a danger to world stability. Ukrainians could teach them a thing or two.

And how long have you lived in the RF to come to this opinion? Many of us have lived here two decades or more and have a slightly different opinion. Ukraine is the most corrupt country in Europe, a fact generally accepted before the conflict but soon forgotten by the Western media when the conflict started. As for the general he's just spinning a conventional US narrative take that as you may. Poka!

The General is fascinating here in this interview. I lived through that as well, but was in the service before the wall fell, and over "there" for periods of time. I became Russian-adjacent back then, as I do have Ukranian blood (my grandparents escaped Odessa in the early 1900s), and felt so sad for the culture even back in the 70s/80s. Watching what happened to Russia over Putin's reign has been tragic. It's a lesson to be learned to us here, in the west. This is what happens with dictatorships and oligarchies. Ya can't let that happen.

I've literally remained furious every single day from day one of 2022 invasion. The amount of anger affected my relationships with family members, many of whom remain silent or make statements word for word from Russian state TV.

The real threat to Democracy is populist manipulation (Trump, Johnson, Orban, etc) which has no doubt been exacerbated by ruzzian interference. The fact that Trump still isn't in jail and is still considered by many republicans to be their best representative is probably the greatest threat to democracy at the moment.

This was a extremely fascinating discussion!👍👍 Excellent questions & very informative & impactful responses from retired U.S. Brig. Gen. Peter Zwack.👍👍 I must say that that Brig. Gen. Zwack's comments were delivered with such passion that I couldn't help wondering if he should be addressed as "Reverend/Pastor Peter Zwack"! 😉I greatly appreciated hearing his learned assessment of the military & political situation for Ukraine, as well as his stories regarding the character & hopes of the Russians he got to know.
However....IMHO, every observation Brig. Gen. Zwack shared just provided more support to the notion that the U.S.A. wants to guarantee the Ukraine will not lose (and, so far, the U.S.A. & the rest of NATO are definitely succeeding in that way), HOWEVER, the U.S.A., is not interested in seeing Ukraine WIN. Unfortunately, the U.S.A. not been willing to provide the types & amounts of advanced weaponry/munitions that would enable 'David to DEFEAT Goliath' for good & guarantee that Ukraine can liberate ALL of its sovereign territory.
To be specific: Although Brlg. Gen. Zwack skirted around the issue of long-range precision missiles & avoided using the acronym, the fact that many of his peers (and perhaps Brig. Gen. Zwack), know that equipping the AFU with a sufficient number of ATACMS (and ideally a couple of F-16s) would ensure Ukraine's ability to isolate Crimea, starve the Russians on the front line of fuel, munitions, food, command & control, timely interdiction of ground-attack aircraft against AFU break-throughs, etc., plus make the port of Sevastopol untenable, thereby limiting Russian naval forces from entering the Black Sea near to Odessa to fire missiles at Ukrainian civilians, grain stores, etc. In fact, retired U.S. Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges & retired U.S. Gen. Phillip Beedlove (both of whom has commanded NATO forces) have stated that if ATACMS & F-16s had been provided in a timely manner to the AFU, this horrible war would be over by the end of this year!
I can't help but wonder this: If only Brig. Gen. Zwack''s impressive skills as an orator & his ability to inspire others could change the minds of Pres. Biden and his administration, and persuade them to make a commitment to see Ukraine victorious....perhaps the suffering & killing could end this year, and Ukraine & other Black Sea nations could feel safe & secure from the threat of Putin's evil, imperialistic Russian war machine....

I broadly agree with your statement, but allow me to add a little bit of nuance. Oh and by the way, I'm no expert, but I have a LOT of spare time and I've been watching and reading a lot of reporting from a lot of different sources for quite a while, so I feel like I have a pretty good idea :)
Ukraine really wants air cover, preferably from jets because they're the most flexible, preferably F-16's because they're the best because of how many the 'West' has, what F16's can do on the battlefield, and the fact that they're relatively easy to use and maintain compared to more modern NATO jets. From what I understand, F16's are ROUGHLY comparable to the most common jets in use in Russia. The Russians do have more modern stuff but not a lot of it, and it's not clear at all that they actually can or want to use their more modern stuff. Lack of training, lack of mechanics, lack of modern missiles and spare electronic parts... it's probably a mix of some of all or those, but regardless of the reason, we're seeing Russia mostly use jets from the 1980's. Same goes for Ukraine, by the way, and F16's are also also from that era, more or less.
Of course, the F16's have been and are still being upgraded, and they were specifically designed during the height of the cold war when the US thought they were going to be fighting the Soviets. So they're not the newest jets but they're still very useable and in fact widely being used world-wide by NATO or NATO-friendly states who don't want or can't afford the newest jets. Which is why there's so bloody many F16's all over the world. And why a lot of nations like the US have a whole bunch of retired F16's still in storage.
Without this air cover, if they can create a break-through (we're possibly seeing the first signs of the beginning of a breakthrough but we're not there yet), exploiting that breakthrough is going to be very, very, very, very, very hard. And if you're wondering what that looks like, just think about the news we've been getting for the last 2 months or so about how hard the Ukrainians have to fight and how slow they're forced to go in the counter-offensive so far.
I don't have any special inside connections in to the various western governments (i'm really as civilian as civilian can be :) ), but I can't help but wonder why we didn't at least start preparing to maybe give them F16's a little sooner, would have most likely made a big difference.
Oh, and just because i'm all nice and focused at the moment, the whole point of air cover in this context is that you can easily directly attack things like artillery, tanks, and enemy aircraft, so that the Ukrainian ground forces can work on getting through the minefields and defensive lines on the Russian side without being constantly bombarded with everything the Russians can throw at them.

I served USDAO Moscow and came to know Putin well, after he failed to do well at the "Charm School*" resulting in his counterintelligence assignment in Leningrad watching western diplomats (his hometown, where he could be watched more closely). For whatever reason, Putin chose me to surveil while there on multiple visits (there was a great opportunity to watch the RO/RO facility) using what is known as "hostile surveillance," where he was physically touching me. This gave me the great, unique opportunity to speak with him, revealing virtually little of what I already knew of him.
Early on, Putin's generals lied to him inflating their successes. Then he wasn't getting support needed for his general staff.

A10s are believed to be less effective as tank busters than has been supposed - the gun shakes the plane too much for good accuracy. But it is notoriously frightening to be anywhere near where the gun is hitting. As Russian morale degrades, A10s may prove ideal for starting them running.

    Putin's days are numbered.
In hindsight, I see the wisdom of having slowly ramped up aid to Ukraine. But now that Ukraine victory is inevitable, I no longer see the value of "slow". At this time I'd like to see NATO (incl US), Japan, South Korea, Australia, and Israel send Putin a message: Russian forces out of all of Ukraine including illegally annexed oblasts by the end of August or they will be subjected to saturation bombing, and all Russian naval units worldwide not in port will be sunk.

@11:50 I'd have to disagree here because we (Western Intelligence) are VERY aware of what Russian military personnel and soldiers are thinking and feeling regarding the war. Tens of thousands of phone calls have been intercepted by Ukrainian intelligence and even people with a radio because many Russians are calling family and friends back in their homes and are outright fed up and angry about the war and how they're personally being treated and forgotten about by Russia. Those conversations have been gold to Ukraine and its partners! Knowing how the adversary feels on a personal level is what may very well be a key to ending the war.

Great interview! I believe its time for Nato countries starts on making covertetly a private army without flagging the soldiers/armies, like Putins Wagner group did when they invaded Crimea back in 2014 and at the same time denied the existence of Russian army present in Ukraine.
Should be able to send 100 000 personell easily all qualified and proffesional teams. Nato could just say that they do not have a presence in Ukraine.
