I still have the floral sofas and oriental rugs I bought in 1989, so my home is filled with pink roses. My folks were missionaries, so I feel very uncomfortable with having more than others. My focus is on contentment and service to others. When I sell again, I will hire a designer to stage this house for appeal and I know that means nearly everything in here will be removed.

I really, really, really enjoyed this video. I am not a woman afraid of DIY and tools, but your passion about a person's ability to do things themselves just hit something in me hard. (God must have known I needed this video this morning.) Your channel is special because you aren't just providing amazing tutorials and advice, but you are empowering people to do things they didn't think they could, push boundaries, and take a leap of faith in themselves, and that's very special and very needed. Keep up the great work, NataLee!

I just sold a house and bought another and I can attest that all of Natalie's advice is right on. Backsplashes--they signal class but they just really aren't that expensive--even when you use a professional. Big bang for the buck. Trim--really elevates the space for not a ton of money. Built-ins--read the listings. If there are built-ins, it is always highlighted. And they are so convenient--with built-ins, you don't have to worry whether the bookcase will fit! Fireplaces--it just gives the living room/family room (didn't even think of the bedroom!) a focal point and adds so much character. The one thing you left out: decks/patios/balconies. Unless you are in an urban high rise, you need good outdoor space. But putting in some kind of outdoor entertaining space doesn't have to cost a fortune.

Wow! I’m so glad to hear your opinion on trends. I recently told my daughter that for the rest of my life I will decorate my home according to what makes me happy. I happen to like to put pictures and not so many written signs. Sitting in a room with a lot of signs makes me crazy. I constantly read them. More relaxing to have flower pictures or landscape pictures. At the end of the day, you are so right about making your home just that, your home. Love your bubbly personality.

May aunt and uncle still have their original curtains from when they bought their home after they got married and at our generational cabin at the coast the same old curtains hang the my great great great aunt made. We have a journal that everyone writes in when they visit the cabin about what they were up to when they visited. It predates my father and uncle's passing. There is something so peaceful about not following trends. There are roots.

On big things, like floors, cabinets, countertops, I want to make sure I get it right and I don’t trust my own eye versus how you look at this all the time. Love all your points, especially the first. It’s so easy to get sucked into what is trendy, but when one is comfortable with their own style and can stick to it, I think its happier than trying to follow and keep up with what is being dictated each year. I do love seeing the homes of friends and family who keep up with trends, but I also tire of hearing each year of what a hassle it is to change, paint, renovate, the expense, etc. I stick to neutrals and can change anything with a few pillows, blankets, or artwork.

Fabulous video, as always. Thank you for the excellent points, and the encouragement to avoid trends in expensive finishes. One of the things I like most about your space, in addition to your amazing DIYs, is that although it isn't large, it LOOKS larger because you don't clutter every surface with "dustables," you go vertical as possible, and your furniture is perfectly scaled.

Both with clothing AND home decor, find what suits you and stick with it. I have had a cream/green/pink theme in every house I've owned since the early 1980's and I still love it - more importantly, because I have furniture, curtains, throws, cushion covers etc in these colours I can move them from room to room and it always 'fits' the colour scheme. Top advice, trust me.

  • @patriciaoldfather6377
    @patriciaoldfather6377 Рік тому +4

I totally agree with you, NataLee!!
Everything you said in this video are truly Words of Wisdom!
Timeless neutrals (greiges aka taupe or winter whites/creams) are definitely the way to go! They GO WITH EVERYTHING.
The current trends and colors can easily be brought in with pillows, throws, artwork, vases/urns, candlesticks, etc. just as you suggested.
Same with classic clothes. Accessories like jewelry, scarves, shoes, purses can do the same for your closet!
Plus, if you do trends on a budget, or DIY them you then have more money to buy quality/luxerious large ticket items that stand the test of time. 👍🏻
Thank you NataLee, for another fantastic video. 😊

I usually like trends the first time I see it, then I quickly hate it as it starts to seem cheap and mass-produced! So funny because I never could get into either the boho or grey trends! My favorites tend to have a unique and personalized mix of 2 styles (rustic/glam; modern/industrial; etc..)! Great video, love the encouraging words! You are so correct NataLee! I’ve spent a good amount of time in London, the gorgeous high dollar homes never changed out hardware, light fixtures etc for trendy looks. They might add a few accessories to “freshen up” the look but that’s it. Really it’s the same for clothes too, classics never go out of style. Gold (or brass) is timeless and I was delighted when the brushed nickel etc became popular. As people redecorated their homes I was able to score high dollar lighting and plumbing fixtures for a fraction of their original cost. But thank God the gray trend is finally on it’s way out! Gray is cold and so dismal looking, like an overcast cloudy day. And when worn it washes most people out! All IMHO of course! 😊 ❤️

I would include wall art, patterns, wood colors, tile, rugs, furniture style, etc. You touched on many of these so thank you so much and I look forward to more.

I’m currently getting my home ready to sell. My kitchen is probably my biggest project. I’m took off the melamine and prepping and spraying the doors, adding new handles. It looks so amazing! With every project comes such a feeling of accomplishment. I’m taking your advice on keeping the walls neutral, except for the fireplace wall, which I’m doing a dark bottle green (feature wall). It’s not a big wall at all, but the room is a large square room, so I think the bit of drama will be stunning . Thank you for such a lovely channel

Welcome back, NataLee!!!❤️😊I'm so happy that you are feeling better, my friend! I hope the doctors have figured out what is going on!🙏🤞❤️
I love all of your ideas! I love your idea for our curtains! I have done that with all of my windows. I have placed my curtains 2 to 3 inches from the ceiling, but I did not place them where the inner part of the curtain is placed from the outer part of the window!😞 And I love our curtains touching the floor by about 2 to 3 inches. Our windows look great, but I see that they would look better w/ your suggestion! I will definitely remember to do all of that in our next home! As always, NataLee, thank you for sharing all of your ideas with us! Stay safe, healthy, and positive! God bless you and your family! You are in my continued thoughts and prayers for healing!🙏❤️🇺🇸😊😘

Love this video and so glad you’re feeling better! We have a brand new home and I especially needed the curtain details. I like a classic, casual style and have an all white walls and cabinets with light gray floors. I’m adding color with accent pieces and decor. I’m excited to make choices that suit us. Thanks for all your inspiration. I’ve loved your channel for years and have learned so much from you!

I'm a transitional gal. I lean toward traditional, but prefer simple, clean lines and that leads me to a more modern twist on the traditional style. "Ornate" is one of my least favorite words. This is the second video this morning that suggests we be aware of trends and incorporate small doses to update our space rather than go full steam forward with them. I am SO grateful for these videos. Common sense rules! Just like wardrobes....find your style and go with it. How hard can that be? Individualism is not a bad thing. We're allowed to express our styles and tastes and surround ourselves with things we love. I always thought that was the point of decorating/remodeling in the first place. Thank you so much for this practical and honest video. I hope THIS trend continues. I want to see more discussions like this.

I love your blurb vs some of these I see RE "how to update your outdated home." I really don't like to see myself as someone who is oversensitive but some of these designers need to stop with their offensive verbiage. As for your idea, I just love them! Give us more!

Many years ago I lived in a cheap student apartment which was very, very loud. I found some quilt batting on sale and bought several. Masonite was cheap, too. I put the batting on the back of the Masonite and installed it on the 'shared wall' in my bedroom. (if I had it to do today, I'd use the sheets of foam - but we didn't have them back then!) Painted up to look like the other walls, it blended in very well. I figured I would have to take it out when I left - so I used as few tack nails as I could. Then, I slept soundly with low noise. I didn't have to take it out, though. The guy who rented the place after me actually paid me for my materials so I would leave it - because it worked! lol I've always been grateful that my dad and mom encouraged the use of tools and imagination.

Hello NataLee. First of all, I want to say that you look great and I pray that you are also feeling great. I agree with staying timeless with your decor choices. I didn't go with grays because I think off whites and creams just feel more inviting. However I've noticed recently that it's more difficult to find things in those colors... everything tends to be in the gray family:(. You have amazing talent and skills. Even though you always try to empower your viewers, I personally wouldn't begin to do some of the things I've seen you do on your channel. Hope you have a wonderful day!!!

The one thing that I really want in our home is a fireplace so I think once I retire from work I am going to get together with the hubby and try building our own, using your portable design. 😀
