Puppy training in an apartment can lead to some challenges but in this video, we suggest tips to make dog training much easier while living in an apartment or condo with a puppy. Potty training in an apartment means avoiding pee pads and setting up a potty spot on the patio or balcony. You can also crate train your puppy in your apartment or condo too. If your puppy is barking in the apartment you will have to make sure you give them proper exercise to drain out the pent up energy they have. This will help your puppy settle better.

Our puppy arrived two days ago and potty training is really challenging! I put the real grass patch in the kitchen. He was doing pretty good day one on that patch, but sleeping and playing on it today and goes to the bathroom elsewhere in the kitchen

I train and I am constantly looking for new information. I trained my first pup 25 years ago. One thing I recommend is finding a pup that has already been working on positive associations with a clicker with the breeder.

The breed is definitely the toy fox terrier dog. The size of this dog is perfect for apartment. Also heard many people of how loyal this breed is they’re actually a good guard dog. I will have to watch the exercise for the dog as there’s no muscle around the bones as there may break a bone. It’s in the breed but I hope feed it more protein. Those are the big things

Thanks for the video! I just got my Frenchie puppy today, he's 6 months old, this is his first time living in an apartment. Since I received him last night (just about 12 hours ago), he has already peed twice and pooped twice in the apartment! Long road ahead!

I have a crate but my little guy HATES it. He also doesnt like leashes but seems to be okay off leash. He likes running with me to the mailbox and around. I work weird hours so I plan to take him to the dog park Monday or Tuesday.

Just got a puppy this week
Great suggestions. I'm getting a mini goldendoodle towards the end of the year. I was planning to use a grass patch on my balcony until the pup is old enough to hold it to go outside.
I got mine one... she's not using it... goes anywhere she feels like it 😣
@@LaSnob711 Is your grass patch natural or artificial grass? I've heard natural grass works better, and it smells less. Also, I've started seeing advertisements for tree bark patches, which I haven't heard any reviews yet. Either way, one thing I consistently hear with puppies is repetition and reward good behavior. Are you taking her to the potty spot every hour or 2, and rewarding her with treats when she uses the potty patch? Hopefully, she'll realize going potty on the patch is a good thing. It might just take your sweet girl a little longer to figure it out.

I'll be taking a Cavalier puppy home in late March! Thankfully I'm on the bottom floor of my apartment with a slider door, but I think I may have to potty train inside for a little while since we get wildlife and feral cats wandering on our patio.

@@amelialeach3325 As a whole it went really well!! We did end up training her outside, and only leaving her with pads when we were at work. She was pretty good by 4 months I think, with an accident here and there if we weren't super attentive to her. By 6 months, I would say that she was fully good to go! She's a smart pup and we did well with giving her limited amounts of space, then letting her be more and more free as she got more reliable!

I will be getting a chihuahua puppy that I will train as a service dog for myself. I’m disabled and live in an apartment building with lots of other dogs. It takes 5 minutes to get from my apartment to outside, and even longer when I have to put on winter clothes. I’m also a part time wheelchair user, so if it’s a day I need my chair, it can take even longer. I don’t have any outdoor space for a grass patch. They’re also too heavy for me and I don’t have a way to dispose of them. I’m planning to use an artificial grass patch in a small puppy litter box, with a pee pad underneath to make cleanup easier. If you have suggestions or recommendations that might help me, I would greatly appreciate it.

I am getting a Bichon Frise in 4 weeks. We live in a city townhouse so we have more room than an apartment but the space is very vertical. We will probably have the puppy pee/poop right outside our front door initially.

I am getting a new puppy in a month and I live in an apartment. I have easy access outside however I live in New England so there is lots of snow and it's cold! I don't have a lot of grassy areas as is. I want to use the method of the grass on the balcony while potty training but the puppy's urine will most likely freeze making it harder to clean up! I would love some suggestions/opinions on what I should do.
I'm getting a Eurasier puppy this summer! They're a relatively new breed in the US so I've been on a waitlist for a while now lol I plan on using a grasspad in my apartment at first before my puppy is fully vaccinated!
We strongly recommend you start the socialization and exposure training before your pup has all of their shots. If you wait until after the final round of vaccinations you have missed out on a critical socialization window that could have a lasting impact on how your dog reacts to new things.

My problem is that my 4-month puppy goes 11 hours at night without having to pee... but during the day she pees constantly so accidents occur daily if I let her out of the pen for more than an hour... any ideas.... I haven't watched the video yet but literally this is exactly what I need! I've been following your training videos but have been having a lot of apartment specific issues. We live on the second floor, and although our puppy learned to pretty much not pee in the apartment, the way from our apartment to the outside has 2 flights of stairs and 2 doors that I need to open, so as much as he tries most of the time he doesn't make it all the way outside before making an accident, also by the time he gets back from running up and down the stairs he's all hyped up in the middle of the night.
As puppies aren't supposed to walk the staris till their spine develops, I carry mine downstairs and so I also avoid the accidents. We take the elevator upstairs.

@@LaSnob711 wow 7 months? we really jumped the gun 😔when i follow her puppy daily schedule, it really works like clock work, he almost uses the potty exactly on the dot. he also knows to ring the bells now to let us know he needs to go. So I'm thinking we put the bells on the patio side and see if that works.

It matters what type of grass pad. There are grass pads with bottom parts that suck up the pee with can cost a lot (up to 199$). But there are some that don’t and aren’t as expensive but you need to clean it more and be careful where you put it (I recommend a balcony).

I live in a duplex, top condo and I am getting a puppy in late June. There is a nice size green area in the backyard (no fence). I was planning on placing a playpen in the back where the grass is located. I feel that my pup should be safe if I keep the playpen on the grass all day and night, and ONLY allow my pup to play and do his duty in the enclosed playpen area. Am I wrong to think that he should be safe until he is fully vaccinated?

Just watched a potty training video and "Monty's" thoughts on the subject were helpful. We have two 8 month old female Cockapoo pups (different litters 2 days apart) from the same breeder. We are have a designated area (part pea gravel and part artificial turf) outside and WE are starting to get a good feel for their schedule. One of them is a "bell ringer" when she has to go out MOST OF THE TIME. The other watches as the other one rings the bells, but has no clue. They are still having accidents in the house when we aren't paying close attention. We have had three dogs but never two at a time and having a single pup seemed much easier to potty train. Any hints on how to accomplish this with two pups would be very helpful.

I’ve had a dog back in the philippines where he has tons of space in the house and run in our yard (rip Minho). Now I’m thinking of adopting a dog but I’m currently in NY and has a small bedroom and apartment. My problem is that dog will most likely has to stay/sleep inside my room and I also need to teach myself how to train a dog with new ways(with clicker)

Hi! I’m having a heck of a time potty training. I live in an apartment and he was going outside. However, a neighbor moved in next door and 2 dogs. He isn’t afraid of the dogs but he is afraid of any noise he hears outside and runs back inside w/o taking care of his business. Any advice please

Our training advice is applicable to all dogs and breeds. It does take a puppy detective on the part of the human, though. You know your dog the best so applying the advice to the unique personality of your dog will be important.

I really want a puppy but our living environment is posing a bit of a challenge. My mom and I each have a carpeted room upstairs. The kitchen and lounge are both downstairs and lead into our small garden. The main problem is the fact that my grandpa is currently sleeping on a pull out couch in the lounge meaning that going downstairs would wake him up. He is also incredibly old fashioned dog care wise and can have anger issues so I cant have the pup sleeping near him in the beginning. If we got a pup it would be entirely my responsibilty to train and care for. I was thinking of swapping rooms with my mom and keeping the puppy with me. Her room a little bigger with space for the crate, she also has an ensuite bathroom with tiles and a balcony that I could put the grass patch on for night time potty break. This also make it so no one else will be bothered by us having to walk through and by the inevitable whining and crying. What do you guys think?
I would hold off on getting a dog. Your living situation is not conducive to having a dog right now.

My new pup tends to do potty while we're still asleep in the early morning. Or should I get a puppy pen for him to sleep in so he can't get out in the morning? Sorry to hear that, Jeffrey. I'm glad that you are trying to turn things around. I would say to start from the beginning with potty training by establishing a stable potty schedule and rewarding when they go out to potty in the right spot. is it okay to give puppy access to 2 rooms the living room and the main bedroom she can sleep in the main bedroom take naps but the living room will let me keep an eye on her when i clean everyday i can teach her commands there and practice them in the bedroom all training except crate training will be done in the living room as it is closer to the door to the nearest outdoor area as it is possible to take her outside but the door which leads outside is closer to the living room

Yes, you can give your puppy access to multiple rooms, but if you are noticing accidents, you may want to limit the rooms again. We recommend your pup sleeps in the room that is closest to the outdoor potty spot.
@@HowToTrainADreamDog I have recently moved before getting a puppy and we have settled down now it is possible for puppy to sleep in the room closest to the outdoor potty spot AKA my balcony with a grass patch to mimic going potty outside but access to 2 rooms still has to be provided but access to the living room will be supervised and access to the bedroom can be unsupervised but i prefer to have puppy always supervised but with a playpen and baby gates it should be possible to leave puppy in the living room unless there are accidents

So many different opinions about wether or not the pup should sleep in the bedroom. Its about 50/50. Is there really a harm keeping your pup with you in the crate in the bedroom for the 1st week?
No there's no harm in it. Many pups need to be close to their humans at first in order to be comfortable in the crate. Eventually you can move the crate once the puppy settles in, if that works better for you.

It would be really nice to find at least one video with advice that doesn't involve a crate. Crating your dog at home is illegal where I live and I wouldn't want to do it anyway, but it feels like it's impossible to find puppy training resources that doesn't rely on crating.

I also don't do crating. He has a transporter, it's kept open a he gets a "good boy" and a treat when he goes inside... that's it...

"Never use puppy pads" Thats bogus!
I've had my puppy for a week in an apartment, she is using pee pads just fine and it has never inhibited her to potty outside.
There are some accidents, but she is receiving praise every time she uses the pee pads. When she goes outside she normally ignores my praises as its so natural for her. Bringing grass and dirt in the home for her to pee? No way! I clean her paws everytime we get back home, and would have to do that more often if I brought grass in. Training pads have been a life saver.

I don’t think people understand how hard it is in an apartment ...I also ended up using pads because it’s hard to know when ur pup wants to pee ....although I highly recommend when ur dog can hold it for long to start eliminating the pad because I found when I took my dog to my friends house he peed inside
Our new dog has decided the pads are the spot and is not going outside. So there's the problem. You're lucky your dog is going in both places
My breeder recommended pads because I live in the city so he could get parvo if I was taking him outside.
My puppy use to listen to all commands now he just ignores me now don't come when I call or lie down when I say nothing at all he just stays there and stare me down and don't move
