Having raced the score desert series for many years in stock trucks. I can assure you it is all about the driver 70% , prep 29%, type of truck 1%.

Know your style of driving and pick your mods accordingly and get out there and become a better driver. Bottom line if you can’t haul in any of these vehicles. Dang...a STOCK Colorado ZR2 beat all those tuned, tricked-out Raptors. I just love it for the smaller size (for in town) and great looks. But that's amazing. 420 Motors, you do the most professional truck test videos on UA-cam. Great job, man. It's worth a lot to get the straight story; you're always very clear about mods and driver differences, etc...very fair...rare!

I just got a 2019 Zr2 . Probably not going to be racing through the desert anytime soon, but it’s great having true off road capability, yet get around the city and fit most parking spots, with modern interior and electronics, in a sleek design; all for $40k-$45k . Best all around bang for buck IMO

Well also, it comes down to which one is easier to drive, the colorado is much easier to get into that tight turn, so it probably gave the driver the confidence and ability to tmdo so, plus who wants to go 100% with a 90k dollar truck?

Lol. I needed every trick I could think of. Yea that little truck is a beast. We all know raptors are bad ass. And I get not everyone will drive there zr2 like that. But showing that it can take abuse this well is also important. Bottom line it’s a far better vehicle than 95% of drivers. The raptor and even the taco are the same. All these toys are bad ass in my opinion.

You won’t regret getting the Zr2 Duramax. I just got one after owning a raptor and I must say this Zr2 is a lot more fun to drive it’s a great daily driver and I’m getting a average of 24.6 mpg on a 1k mile trip.

I love that dry lake bed area. We go riding out there all the time. A little hot right now on the bikes its nice to have A/C. Great videos keep it up. I'm a chevy guy through and through, but I can't get over the gen 1 raptor.
That thing is freakin sweet. Glad we could show you that the gen 1 is more than able to keep up with the gen2
cool video but lets be real, the only way to make this a real comparison would be to have the same driver drive all the trucks.
These drivers looked like they were all over the place experience wise.
All pretty experienced but yea one driver is the way but then you only need one vehicle of each. We had multiple vehicles of each to show that it’s not about the equipment. The times Vary widely for everyone, just like in the real world. I know slow raptor drivers and fast Tacoma and zr2 drivers. Basically the point of the video is to show that driver skill has more to do with good offroad vehicles than the specs themselves. But thanks for watching man. On that course however there are parts that favor big raptors and parts that favor midsize. My raptor is still in the shop but I’m guessing without any whoops or jumps the raptor and zr2 times would still be close with me driving both. On that track at least

To find speed you must first find a lot of seat time. In time you will learn the pace needed not for speed but for the finish. Remember to finish first you must first finish. I am digging the comparison video. If there’s one piece of advice I can give you. I wouldn’t spend so much money purchasing these new trucks to play in the desert. You would be surprised how much superior the old 1965 - 1996 f150’s are off road with minimal money and modifications.
Definitely agree with just proper mods any vehicle will do. Tried to keep to consumer friendly for more views but 100 percent agree that you don’t need a new toy. Thanks for the advice man

good commentary and interesting test, but that track was so smooth, didn't test anything about off road. i want to see how they handle rough terrain at high speed, where are all the whoops and ruts you'll see on a real trail, who can carve dunes better, can the raptors make it down a narrow trail with the mid size's? let's see that video next!
Yea. No way to get all of that in one episode. This was more addressing the horsepower differences and mods for going fast. Left a ton of info out about the mods of the trucks cause it wasn’t relevant. Barely episode 2. Will have a crawling video next with jeeps trd pros and a raptor build. After we’re doing baja. So better comparisons. This was just one aspect.
the zr2 with baja kits suspension would probably be a blast.

Yea just gotta stay on the dirt and keep up maintenance and repairs and it won’t matter what you drive, your truck will kick ass.
I would like to see you guys practice and get better at powersliding/drifting. I didn't see anyone properly slide the 90 degree left (or any other turns for that matter). But thanks for putting together these videos regardless!
Edit: the second to last ZR2 did quite a bit better but suffered way too much understeer into the 90.

Awesome video man, you make the best Raptor related videos hands down!! I definitely think, mods, wheels and cab size make a difference with lap times but the biggest lap time factor is without a doubt the Driver!. You clearly know what you are doing out there compared to some if not all the others. You set your Zr2 up perfectly with the air pressure and you nailed that left hand turn. I'm not criticizing don't get me wrong but i'd love to see You drive a Gen2 on same course and see what your time is, I bet it's a lap record.

Cool video, but if we're being honest, the times mean nothing. There's such a variety in driving styles between the drivers, not to mention there's no ratio to base the difference in power and weight on between vehicles. If anything, it's a great day of owners pushing their trucks in the desert.

Lol. Its very easy to come in too hot into that turn. Actually didnt ask him. But a lot of raptor owners run in sport mode to be faster and forget that Baja mode disables the abs brake system so that you can lock up your brakes on dirt. In sport mode your not gonna stop standing on the brake on the dirt. Honestly don’t know what happened though

Yea I sent it a bit. Also the first quarter of that track was narrow and slippery. So the zr2 had a big advantage there for hitting the apex on the the s turn and hard left.

Yea they are great shocks actually.
Unless I missed something you were also the only one steering with the throttle. Just goes to show how knowing how to drive the damn thing is more important than how much money/horsepower you can throw at it.
Oh yea. It’s not that steering with throttle makes you better. But you can’t steer with throttle if you don’t have a good feel for the vehicle. Since the track was all a test of traction and not so much suspension, flirting with the trucks limit of grip is definitely what let her win

That’s what they need to do. I know raptor owners that hate ford and are true Chevy fans but can’t resist the raptor. They would trade in a second even for an early model. I’ve always been a ford guy and love my gen 2. Love my zr2 and will get a ranger raptor as soon as possible. I would get a Silverado raptor competitor if they made one in a heart beat as well. Assuming I could afford one after all this. Lol.

420 motors I hope within the next few months, I’ve been trying to decide between the ZR2 and Tacoma TRD off-road for a while, but I’m leaning heavily towards the ZR2 for the awesome suspension and front and rear lockers. Both are great trucks for sure. Once again, great job on video and I’m glad to be a new subscriber to your channel! 💯
Oh hell yea man thanks. You definitely won’t be upset if you get a trd pro. But price and performance the zr2 seems to beat it in every category. Even resale value now. If you have non gm truck you can get a few grand off from rebates if you take that registration. Incentives can add up anywhere from 5-7 k

My first time there. Was recording so went last the track was super chewed up. And didn’t get practice laps cause was busy recording and organizing. Actually had the biggest disadvantage of anyone there.

No but it does take a bit of abuse. Should definitely acknowledge the problem and instal those aftermarket skid plates

So I'm currently running a 2015 Tacoma TRD Pro with a TRD blower and adds making somewhere around 385hp but no suspension mods. I'm probably going to run it a few more years and then see what the new model ZR2 has with improved interior and possibly the 2.7 turbo that can be tuned and improved to 360hp or so.
In the meantime...I'm paying attention to what you're doing with your 3.6 in the event I go gently used and end up with a 2021 version. Any plans on adding more hp to yours?

Which is a better daily driver that rides smoother on the daily commute?
Dang. Good question. On the street nothing beats the status of the raptor. You can park them next to exotic sports cars and not have the stigma of a midlife crisis. I think they are the smoothest of the trucks between the zr2 and taco. Also the most luxurious and spacious. A mid size is easier for daily driving because of size. The zr2 is very smooth but not as floaty as the raptor. It’s got a bigger cab than the taco so makes it better for everyday use I think. If you can live with the size of a raptor for the street I think a raptor takes it.

It was my first time on the track also ran the least amount of practice laps since I was busy timing and recording also went last so I could record meaning the track was more degraded for me. Actually had the biggest disadvantage of the entire group

Hey I love this video, could you be brutally honest with me though? Which one performs better and by how much? A tuned diesel or the gas? Obviously the gas one won, but that could just be down to drivers.

We started with the raptor and then got the zr2 out of necessity. Have known some raptor owners that hate ford and are Chevy fan boys but couldn’t resist the raptor. I would listen to them saying how much better Gm was so conking from them that’s saying a lot. Now that I know how tough the zr2 is I couldn’t ague against them. Also for engine mods it’s hard to beat the way Gm formats there engines and computers. No wonder everyone has an ls swap. Btw. The raptor is getting a full build with a caged front end. I asked the builder to make it swap friendly so when that ecoboost dies I will be putting something comparable to an lt4 in there. I say comparable because I don’t know when that will happen but that would be my choice today

Damn this video makes me happy. I'm looking into getting a zr2 and I love how you were quite unbiased on this review. While a raptor is a raptor and is super awesome, that price tag is definitely way above my price range, but that stock zr2 held its own damn well. You mentioned that one of the zr2 v6 had a tune with gave a boost in hp, but what about the gm exhaust and intake? I haven't been able to find any details on any (if any) performance boost from that. Either way, I can't wait until I purchase mine. What state is this in btw?
Yea the intake and exhaust will give you an extra 20ish. And a tune from any shop will make that 20 feel like 40 after remapping

If the track had after the desert run like up hill crawl and lil water ditch and some really tight turns with rocks or trees on both sides the zr2 gas would destroy all of them with the time.
Yea. But the raptor would have a slight advantage if there were whoops and a jump. Not that the raptor is good on whoops no stock vehicles are but the zr2 slows down a bit on them. It’s great because it’s incredibly well rounded. Little truck can do it all

Lol. I used to hate all midsized and thought even though the zr2 isn’t pretty it’s the best option. But the trd pro and sport front end has grown on me. Zr2 is more for my driving type though.
