      To clarify, for the gaming mode to work well, you need to have software running on the PC? It can't handle in the hardware like the Govee?

    I'm completely in agreement with your description of Philips' Hue's evil business practices. It's one of the reasons why I've only bought one Philips Hue products in my entire Smart home activities and think that was a mistake as well.
    Matter and Home Assistant. Yay!
    Decent, useable software for 100% color reproduction. Even more yay! (Seriously, this is excellent.)
    Aside: Paul (I'm sure you're aware of this), your elephant has a shadow! Quite cool. Attention to detail like that makes your videos more fun to watch. (And you can tell my level of attention to detail as I'm just now noticing that shadow :o )
    "They fixed it." One of the things I like about your channel is that you add additions and corrections in your comments even after the video has been posted for some time. That's really helpful for those of us who really pay attention to the "What's Wrong with It?" section.
    Matter doesn't matter when it comes to local control: That's weird. You're right. Matter should have local control without requiring an Internet connection. Sadly, I expect to see a lot more of this type of thing as Matter continues to roll out.
    "I understand dollars": Actually, as the one thing in Freedom Land that is actually decimal based (thank you Continental Congress) so it's actually comprehensible. (Somewhat better than fiddling with farthings, pence, shillings, and pounds, not to mention haypennies, thrupence, two and six, and a guinea.) We do a lot of things weird here in the land of the allegedly brave, but at least we got our money right.
    Anyway, thanks for another great review and some new jokes.

    This is great but I don't get why people think it's new - I hate to tell you this (I don't really) but people have had lights mimicking what's on the screen for over 15 years.
    Philips did it back in 2008 and some people did DIY versions as well.
    My Philips amBX kit still works (mostly - it has some dead LEDs in the wallwashers). And I use ambibox software to run it. I also have the Madcatz amBX lights as well but I haven't used them for a few years because I don't run as many lights as I used to.
    However I'm surprised this works with software + Netflix etc as typically most software won't work for protected content (it usually makes the software see a black screen).

    I have always been hesitant to use Yee lights because they somehow always sneak some way to send data or comms back to China. That’s why they stop working as soon as you disconnect the internet. They may support Matter but it is probably on an esp chip that communicates to the app on your phone and computer that makes it stop as soon as you disconnect.

    Razer Chroma should be judged only on a Per-Game basis. Every game that supports it has its own integration. For the most part yes, it mainly reacts to what actions you do. It really only comes to life when you have games that take full support of it to highlight whats going on in the game in interesting ways. Most of the effects are centered around the RGB keyboards though. Nonetheless, if you're a gamer and playing supported games, a full room of razor chroma is an unmatched experience since no other system lets you pull together every RBG light you own the way it does

    Oh Paul, even you have to know that having two vertical light sticks, however funky they are, is about as useful as using a cheese grater as a loofah on your genitals. It's as though a person doesn't already have enough in their living room without them saying, "I know what this place needs, yeah, some light sticks!".
    I put these in the same category as the force feedback steering wheel I wanted to invent, that has a pneumatic spike in the middle to give someone the realistic feeling of death when they high-speed crash, or the pneumatic seat that propelled you forward so that your head shoots through your monitor for the total immersive feeling of what it would be like to be ejected from your vehicle through the windscreen.
    Sure, these sticks will keep the elephant doing the boogie for a while, but their attention-span isn't massive... unlike their... sorry, got confused there, was thinking of a horse.
    Entertaining as always and stop doing different jokes, they're freaking me out. Is that passive aggressive enough?

    Out of curiosity, were you using their app when testing local control, or did you pair it with something like HomeKit? I wouldn't be surprised if their app is still cloud connected, in fact I suspect that's probably how they're doing it because it's cheaper and easier than them trying to create a new app from the ground up. If you did test it with something like HomeKit and it still didn't work, that really does make it a head scratcher... Since the actual matter standard only allows for local control I'm not really sure how it could be cloud dependent, I'm certainly hope that's not the case

    I have a flush mounted TV for my new house so there won't be any room for an LED strip behind. I'd love to run some free standing lamps like this on either side/above/below... At the moment the best option appears to be a hue (although I think the new tv comes with the hue sync app so I won't need the box) but I'd still need the ridiculously expensive lamps 😤😤😤

    Paul, just the man I wanted to see. I wanted to ask you... is there a sensor that works with google home to turn my lights into sensor lights?

    • @RNMSC
      @RNMSC 10 місяців тому +1

      Nope, I'm not Paul. Hopefully he'll respond shortly, but I know he has some aversion to Toodle Home, so he might be busy.
      That out of the way, Google HOme (supposedly, I haven't tested it) supports using motion or luminosity sensors to trigger lights on and off. As I haven't tested this (I have HA, and have set up Automations for that level of stuff there) I can't really offer more than suggestions on making sure that whatever sensor you have set up (motion, presence, luminosity) will work as a trigger for a Routine, then set up the actions for the routine to perform in response. This may involve multiple routines for a sensor that changes state on and off that you want the lights to react to.
      If you are looking for some other sensor to turn lights into sensor lights, I'll admit that I'm probably missing your meaning.

    • @knifeyonline
      @knifeyonline 10 місяців тому

      @@RNMSC you are correct, I was just thinking of a motion sensor that could trigger a routine 👍

    • @knifeyonline
      @knifeyonline 10 місяців тому

      @@RNMSC I think maybe with a ZigBee hub it's possible? But I don't have a ZigBee hub and I just wanted to know that it would give me the ability to trigger any routine in home assistant before I bought one. Or if somebody can link me to paul's video where he talks about it 🙏 ❤. If I work it out I will try and reply to this thread for future generations 🤣

    • @RNMSC
      @RNMSC 10 місяців тому

      @@knifeyonline Mostly the trick is in getting the motion sensor to be recognized as a triggering event by Google Home. I hesitate to offer specific recommendations, as a big part of it will depend on what platforms have integration with Google Home.If I wanted Google to handle that instead of Home Assistant, (I have a Zigbee Hub/USB Stick Home Assistant works with) I would create a helper 'switch' in HA that is set to mirror the state of the motion sensor detection, then share that device with Google Home. That isn't the most efficient solution, and I would just use the Home Assistant blueprint to turn lights on and off based on motion sensors.
      For the solution you're looking for, you will probably want to confirm that a motion sensor made visible to Google Home can act as a trigger, and research which vendor products are supported. (This I don't know.)
      The general problem with Google Home is that either the integrations don't work at all (far too often) even though they are promoted as being supported, Or in even more situations, once you have the integration set up, it takes 'forever' for Google Home to act on trigger events. I believe that combination is why Paul isn't a big fan of the functionality of Google Home, even though the hardware is aesthetically pleasing in my view.

    I am needing some advice of someone who has used behind the tv in my case lights. I am tempted to get a set of govee tv backlights but my tv setup is free standing so no wall behind it. The tv either sits in the middle of my gym or
    in front of a shelf with black plastic storage boxes on it. Would the lighting effect be worth the investment or is it all lost due to not being able to reflect off the wall as most tv setups show it working. Any advice would be great. thanks

      Unless they're shining onto something then no. The black boxes would reflect some light I guess. 👍

    No more RGB lighting here, I have completed its purge. Not one backlit cat box or Star Wars doll. Bonus: people no longer ask if my parents were carnies.

    Have you reviewed the Lytmi Fantasy Backlight?

      I don't think so! Been a while since I reviewed a Lytmi backlight. The last one I did was amazing though!!

      @@paulhibbert I have the gen 1 and it's brilliant. The newer ones seem worth a look though. As far as I can tell they are the only real comparison to a Hue Sync Box.

    Unfortunately not a complete Philips Hue HDMI Sync Box alternative. It only works through software on a pc, which immediately rules out the use on a tv. It's a nice gimmick for a gaming setup (again, only pc, not for any consoles). So I guess I'm still waiting for a real alternative that can transcode HDMI signals to a lighting setup :)

    To be fair, you do use the same jokes every week, but to also be fair, that's the main reason why I've been watching the channel for years now (minus the last couple of months after recovering from a heart attack 😂), so keep up with the same bad jokes.

    Paul! I have so missed honestly, some of the jokes get a little old but not mr Socky. 😂
    Anyway, I digress. What about Lytmi? You reviewed that one a while ago and it looked like it would do what I needed it/ wanted it to and I have one. Unfortunately I disconnected it because the audio lag was horrible. I just couldn't fix it and I could never get the lips in sync. That said, I can barely keep my TV and sound bar in sync so I think it's my problem and not necessarily with the device. I'm also thinking about some kind of a splitter and see how that works.
    Anyway, thanks for the video Mr. Socky, i mean Paul, keep them coming!

    I have RGB LED everywhere. I have Razer Chroma Synapse controlling all my PC fans and light strips, my keyboard, mouse-mat and of course the mouse. I have LED strips around my furniture, Philips Hue Play bars on the shelves and Govee Glide across the walls. Razer Chroma synchronises (with ambient awareness) to them all with zero fuss. Razer's software has got MUCH better than it was. This time last year, I couldn't even get Razer devices working properly. Now it only uses 7% CPU usage and 317mb of system memory. Razer works 100% reliably here.
    HDMI is old. I believe the best HDMI cables only support formats up to 1080p at 144 Hz, and most HDMI sync boxes I've seen are capped at 60 Hz refresh rate. Anyone with a 4K or 1440p monitor (with 144 Hz refresh rate or above) should use software or "screen camera" options that are available.
