I was in the Marines (USA) for 14 yrs, I’ve had both Casio G-Shock and Timex Ironman which I still use. It’s got to the point where I used my Timex watch more in the field, deployments, and even around the house on my days off when I’m messing with tools or working on hobbies. Since the price point was cheaper, used it for everything since I didn’t care for breaking it. But the Casio G-Shock was up there in price that the only time I really used it was when I knew that I wasn’t doing anything rough. Walking around base, garrison, daily work or even a night out in town I’d slap on that Casio to show it off. Fast forward to the present time, I have no idea where my Casio G-Shock is but still to date I use my Timex on the daily.

Lots of reviewers talk about G-Shocks, but a serious Ironman review is long overdue. I agree. Great watches for runners. Started using them in the 80s. Got me through some marathons and lots of trail running. Great pricing and functionality. Well done Jory.

Yes, good review. I choose Ironman, G-Shocks are tough and well built. Too bulky for such small characters and useless features taking up space.

Career LEO here, 14 years and counting including 9 years on SWAT. I have both a Timex Ironman and a Casio GW6900. They’re the only watches I own and I enjoy them both, but if I had to choose, I prefer the Timex. Larger, easier to read display with less wasted space, the buttons are easy to press while wearing gloves, and it’s lighter and less noticeable. At the end of the day, I just need something durable and inexpensive that tells the time and date, has a stopwatch, and alarm, and the Timex nails that.
The G shock is awesome too!

I like the Timex in that it's way easier to read. My go to watch when I was in the military (served 27 years), was a Citizen dual analog/digital readout that I bought in 1984. I still have it, still works....

I’ve been a huge fan of the Timex variation since the early 80’s when they were just called the “Triathlon.” I’ve got no issues with the G-Shocks, but the Timex Ironmans have always been much easier to read and operate while being lighter and just as durable as the G-Shocks. Each to his own, but the Ironmans have always made more sense.

I am still wearing one Timex Triathlon watch I bought in 1989. The indigo light is weak but everything else works like on day 1. I only wore Casio in 60's and 70's. But since I discovered Timex, never wore another Casio.

    • @StardustLegacyFighter
      @StardustLegacyFighter Рік тому

I wouldn't say they've always been as durable as G Shocks, they didn't even have shock resistance or 100+ metres of water resistance, that's something they improved on a lot later.
Whereas, G Shock introduced the Master of G lineup that absolutely nothing from Timex comes close to, imo.

As a sailing instructor I can say that this is actually the go-to watch for yacht racing. The timer function helps sailors time race starts and is waterproof enough for even the most physical, in the water, boat classes

I have both, but I've had my Ironman since 1999 and it has been a true beater and still works. It's much smaller than the one in this video. Wore it in the military, countless mountain bike rides (and crashes), backpacking trips and rafting. Looks like crap now but still runs fine and I'll always have it. Both are great watches.

I actually went looking for "vintage" Ironmans because of Jocko. I currently have one of the modern rugged versions but the old ones have a conventional lug construction so you can exchange regular straps without the watch looking quirky. They also just look way better in general than the modern ones honestly.

It's nice to see Timex digital watches getting a bit of love. G-Shock/Casio seem to suck the air out of the digital watch space on UA-cam, which is interesting to me as the Timex digital watches have been around about as long, and are strong sellers. In my time in the CAF I have seen more Timex on wrists than G-Shocks.
As maybe you can tell, I've always been a Timex fan more than G-Shock fan. I wore/wear a Timex Atlantis 100, and it held up to war, sports, camping, etc...

I like this review. About two weeks ago, my wife found my old, old Timex Ironman Triathalon. This one is all black with a orange start/split button. It was dead, but still looked new. I changed the battery and had to do a little resettling of the movement inside the case because the button for set/recall didn't function. By pushing the movement with a little nudge, it clicked and the push button was then able to engage the set/recall function. Anyway, this watch has to be 20 or more years old. It only has a 10 lap memory unlike the new models with 50 or 100, and not quite as many modes. Like I said earlier, it looks like new and works like a champ. It's been added to my collection along with an older model G-shock I have. I really thought your comparison of the G-shock and Ironman was ingenious. IMHO there are no other watches that would compete with these two.

I've never owned a G-Shock, but I've had (and still have) six varieties of the Ironman Triathlon watch. Once I got a Garmin to track my running/hiking/cycling mileage, the Timexes fell out of favor. I've recently rediscovered them, put new batteries in them, and they all still run like champs. Using a couple as beaters now (they scratch my nostalgia itch). Nice review, love your channel!

Very nice review. I've had this exact model for a couple years and I love wearing it when I'm running, it's an updated sleeker aesthetic that is still familiar with the iconic late 90s design. Personally, I prefer the Ironman for a number of reasons. Unlike most G Shocks, the display is clean and simple, not cluttered. It's light, comfortable, and not a giant bulking mess on the wrist. I'm a competitive long distance runner and I love the branding tie-in with the IronMan Triathlon. This watch just screams "athlete". Also this watch won me over at a young age, had an IronMan Triathlon in the late 90s and it was the first watch I truly fell in love with. I wore it all summer as a camp counselor in heat, rain, swimming, showering, biking, running, you name it. The watch took all the punishment like a champ and then some.

I'm not really into digital watches, but I do have an Ironman. I bought it 3 1/2 years ago, just before summer, to use for jogging and going to the beach. I didn't want to keep on risking using my auto divers for the beach and my chrono seemed too nice to use for jogging or hiking. I looked at the G-Shock because that seemed to be the go-to for a lot of people. I found it over-priced, over-built, over-sized, overcrowded dial, and ugly as sin. So I looked at the Ironman. The model I chose was the perfect size, not too big at all, comfortable to wear, and not a ridiculous- Transformer looking thing like the G-Shock. And less than $40.00. So far it has survived 3 summers at the beach, getting pounded by waves, and winter of skiing/snowboarding. I also use it to time my jogs or just to time cooking or doing laundry. As I'm looking at it right now I noticed that it has some encrusted salt in the little ridges where the strap meets the case, and the white "Timex" script has completely faded. Salt, sun and chlorine would do that. Other than that it's just fine. Not even one scratch on the crystal, which is surprising. My major complain is that the strap is integrated with the case so when that tears, as rubber or silicon straps will tend to do, the watch will essentially be useless. But at 40 bucks it doesn't bother me too much.

Those Ironmans never give up, I'm in the construction industry and my old one has plenty of scars. The buttons on the G-shock look quite prone to being damaged, maybe I'm wrong. I get the dermatitis thing too with a resin strap in warmer weather, this strap is definitely the answer. My order has been placed.

Timex screen is definitely more readable (bigger digits, lighter screen background). But my marathon died after 4 years of use (or abuse :) ) - buttons stopped working good and screen died. $40 G-Shock is definitely sturdier, but using stopwatch on DW-5600 is simply painful.

Ironman may not be as aesthetically exciting as a GShock (I just bought a 5600E actually), but I've always heard they were a go-to watch for sporting people and athletes,
runners in particular. Not sure about swimming but it's probably good for basic swimming or laps, etc. And the prices are affordable. Armitrons are ok too but
I think the issue with both companies is the quality is sometimes iffy. I still trust Casio more.

I own 3 G Shocks and my wife has one. I've had numerous Ironmans since the 90's. My only complaints about Ironmans are the lack of solar and atomic time keeping. (Although I think there was one solar Ironman.). I'm wearing a 200m water resistant Ironman as I write this.
Like G Shocks, different Ironman models week have different features. I had one Ironman that connected to a computer in order to store phone numbers. You would type the names and numbers into a computer program. Then you set the Ironman to a certain mode and the computer monitor would flash to send the info to a sensor on the Ironman.
This was a pretty good comparison of the watches. The one reason that an Inronman is my daily work watch compared to my G Shocks is Timex's night mode. If you hold down the Indiglo button for about 3 seconds it turns on night mode. A little crescent moon will show up on the display. When in night mode, any button that you press will turn on the Indiglo for 3 seconds. That is a game changer if you need to operate your chronograph or other functions in the dark. It was too awkward for me to keep having to press the light button over and over on my G Shocks. Some other Timex watches might also have night mode.
The only other thing that I wasn't sure if it was clear to anything out there without Ironman experience is regarding the strap. If you like resin/rubber straps, you can get Ironman watches with those instead of the velcro.

I hope you see this @thetimeteller !!! Please make a dw5600e vs the iron man. Do toughness tests on both to see which is tougher! Maybe the iron man can keep up with the g shock? Or maybe the gshock is levels above the timex. Id love to see your spin on a video like this!!!

Timex ironman watches have a very special space in my heart, that watch go me through US Army Basic training & my Kosovo deployment, btw they were the best watch for runners until Garmin.

On a side-note, what's going on with the lighting in this video? I've never noticed it before but it looks like you're using natural light...

I had a previous version of that one cause I don't have the fourth alarm but going to the business: in my case my watch has been really reliable doing tough things. I work in a home depot store in the building materials section and I use this one for over a year, I changed for a Mako II which I love it, and my timex is full of scratches and dents but still work. I had only to regrets about this little one: is really hard to try to change the battery, because for the design of the straps had this piece which goes extended to the back of the watch and is really hard to put on again, the other is my fault ... I hit it really hard against one pallet of wood in my jog and I brake the glass, the watch as I told you guys works perfectly good but had that problem, I know like in ebay i can find the replacement but beside of that is pretty reliable little one, enjoy it and have a good one guys bye

I've got that same Ironman and the best thing is how comfortable the strap is. I think it was recently discontinued, which is a shame as it's no longer on their website. The G-Shock's offer a lot more functions and features though.

Why not compare the Timex Expedition Shock with G Shock? Seems more appropriate than this Ironman.
I do agree about the straps though. I really dig the hook and loop straps for active use.

I own both watches but my Ironman is the one I wear 6 days a week while working doing metal framing and hanging drywall. It's never failed me and is (in my experience) damn near indestructible. This is my third Ironman, I still have the other two and they are both still in excellent condition. My first Ironman is a pre indiglo (bought 32 plus years ago) version and still keeps perfect time!
Also Jory, MVP Sports is long dead.

I just picked up the Timex Expedition (TW4B09400) for $28, which i have a more casual variant of already and enjoy. Imo, G-Shock has a lot of features and is a lot more expensive, i however dont need all that. On top of that the G-Shock generally isnt made in smaller sizes which just doesnt look right on shorter peoples arms. Generally a 39-45 case size looks best and G-Shock doesnt have smaller sizes really unless you find a more masculine baby-g. I think my biggest G-Shock deterrent is the price and size of the watch.

I've always wanted a G shock. I can't seem to make the move because my Ironman's just work and work good. The big screen numbers are a clear difference, especially when running. I have beat the crap out of my Ironmans and the only reason I get a new one is because over years I just itch to get something new one. The Ironman is like a Honda--> simple, reliable, easy to read, has a timer on it, and you get the feeling, like a Honda, they are eager to go to work.

I wore the original version of that watch in the 90s while in the military. Better than any G Shock of the time. Survived multiple combat zones and hundreds of parachute jumps. I wore it till the strap dry rotted off of it while deployed. I only ever considered wearing any other watch because I couldn’t find a direct replacement.

I have Timex Ironman Triathlon 8lap, the presidential model, I love it! It was made the year I was born, great everyday watch, but Timex watches are more comparable to regular Casio digital watches, but there are models that are shock resistant and those models are comparable to G-shock

Great video Jory! I would compare the Timex T49977 to a G Shock since this is a Shock resist Timex. I own the CAT version and no issues. I also own Suunto's as well.
