I'm on this weird spree where I've just been listening to Ron Gilbert interviews and talks for two days. There's something so motivating but at the same time soothing about him.
Ron wears STAN's suit! ;-)
I extremely enjoy listening to him.
Thimbleweed park is such a well thought out beautiful game......story, theme tune......hope we get a lot more
1 year later, I watch the video again. How incredible beautiful is the Spielberg part of the speech?
Fantastic speech! As a game designer, I always love listening to Ron Gilbert talk. I really can't wait to see where he goes next in the industry =D
Truly inspiring. Ron is a master of game design and creativity, I loved this speech!
Why does NO ONE seem to know how to film a conference presentation? Show us the slides! Note: we can *hear* the speaker. We are unlikely to miss something if they are out of frame for a moment or so. But we will miss a *ton* if the slides are out of view. The crucial context behind a joke, or key technical details of an explanation. We're just left to imagine what he might be pointing to. Yes, when you can have both in frame, it's good to see the speaker, but if you have to pick which you can have in frame, give priority to the slides!
1000% this. So infuriating that they missed so many slides.
I'm going to go play The Dig right now.
what a great speech. love it :)
Very inspirational talk! Loved the point Ron makes about challenging the audience and making the storyline not be obvious, as they did in the ending of Monkey Island 2 :)
This is really inspiring :)
I'm so happy that I had somehow avoided this MI 2 ending until today. In the year 2001 I completed MI4, then in 2006 - MI 1 and began playing MI 2, but somehow never finished it, completed about 80% of it. In 2010 - the Tales of Monkey Island and then finally in 2013 I caught up on Monkey Island 3 - also completed it. Today I watched an interview with Ron Gilbert where he goes on about this ending. It's simply amazing that I had avoided this fourth-wall-breaking ending that could spoil it all for me.
Just perfect!
My hero!
I could listen to Ron talk all fucking day
The way he talks about Star Wars is exactly the way I feel about Monkey Island.
Stewart from Mad TV went on to make the best point and click games ever made
So we didn't have Monkey Island 3 because of a kid... Damn Ron why didn't you finish Monkey Island saga before leaving ? :( I'm sure he regrets it, you can't ditch your best work without regretting it someday.
Great talk, Ron. As I remember it, though, your dad brought home an HP-67 programmable calculator, not a TI-59. How could I forget the RPN?
Wonderful.
Five years later and I still just love listening to this guy talk. Monkey Island was everything. We NEED the real Monkey 3!
That description for the ending of Monkey Island reminded me of the remake for "The Lone Ranger"
I loved the Putt-Putt games :)
Picking up the dog in MI2 was pretty cool.
Love this talk. So inspiring. But Ron's hairstyle makes me think of Jim Carrey's in Dumb & Dumber X-)
So this is the explanation on Monkey Island's origin :O
There where slides to the sides of him that are not in this video.
Really wished that they had a decent sized hall.
I get the thought that we will/may never know what the true secret of Monkey Island is. Or was in Gilbert's vision when he first began to come out with these games.
And here we are in 2023, with his version of MI3.
@@JJ-ze6vb I enjoyed Return to Monkey Island. Have you played it yet?

Funny thing he dislikes Fantasy that much while adoring a story which takes place a long time ago and is about sword-fighting knights and princesses battling an evil empire while encountering tons of fantastic creatures.
He clearly meant medieval fantasy, not space fantasy.
it's like...
Tim ?
He was funny indeed, but I'm sure there's something else missing. Like... some PowerPoint slides?
What is his nephew doing at his aunt and uncle?
'cause ron gilbert was funny.
The idea that this man got an F because his teacher thought a robot was impersonating him as evidenced by this spooky thing called print brought up a lot of bad memories about just how stupid grade school teachers are.
awww, less ron, more slides would have been awesome
What does he mean: the human brain is delicious?
Just a joke.
Who's Ron Gilbert?
The secret of monkey island is
GROG!
GROG!!
GROG!!
I just don't get how people can hate the end of MI2. It's beyond perfect.
Is it me, or does Ron Gilbert look like Paul Thomas Anderson?
Sean Johnson Its you...
Tim Hendrix No, he looks a little bit like PT Anderson. Just a little bit.
i think he has the eyes of john malkovich, that slightly lunatic gaze, Ron is my hero though
lol
Hey Gamespot, what are all those people laughing about???
1 person fights like a dairy farmer

As interesting as he is, I would say it's hard to deny that he's stuck in a trivial mindset for many years now. He doesn't get anywhere. And he would be unable to regard it critically, at least from a critical point of view which would change anything, or lead to him doing something interesting.
