MPC 2.1.6 Update brings new, Moog model D inspired MINI D synth
I'm comparing AKAI MINI D to the real Moog synthesisers - Moog Sub 37 and vintage Moog Rogue. Not a scientific comparison - just a couple of oscillators and filters tests, but you can do some tests yourself - I'm sharing my Moog Sub 37/Moog Rogue Keygroup Programs I made using MPC autosampler feature.

Thanks for doing this. ❤ Gives a nice reference. I agree - the most value for me are the presets - there are some real treasures and so many points much to get started.
Presets are actually very good and useful - and every AKAI plug-in has really nice presets!
Dope video! Thanks for all your contributions to the MPC community 🙏🏽
My pleasure!
Nice video, love to see stuff like this since that equipment is not cheap especially from Moog. Thanks for the free keygroup programs 🙌🏼
More to come!
I have a Sub 37, Matriarch, Behringer Model D, and recently added the Akai Mini D. I like it for what it is. It’s immediate and convenient to have within the Live. While it doesn’t completely capture the Moog sound, I’ve been able to pull up sounds that work well within context. For the price, I think it’s a win.
Exactly, it's immediate and convenient!
by the way, your channel is basically a goldmine for mpc users! Thank you for everything!
Wow, thanks!
What a great channel! So glad this popped up!
Welcome aboard!
As always a dope video! Love this channel!
Appreciate it!
Amazing content and comparison…I like the mood sub for most of the examples & “omg the rogue was incredible “ the mi I was too bright and too modern for me but. Can imagine it wil fit nicely alongside “Massive and Serum” type patches . I love the warmth and colour that each individual vintage synth brings to the game ..as Adrian Uttly said ..sometimes the old broken things don’t need fixing “bcos they bring new tricks and textures if/when needed”. Thanks for th multi samples ..I need to share some things with you before we launch our channel.
Thanks for the feedback, totally agree on Adrian Uttly quote! MINI D has some tricks on it sleeve though, I'm comparing mostly clean oscillators, but engaging "analog" and "feedback" features as EnnochLight pointed out will get us closer to the real thing!
You are doing Gods work, please keep it up! Every video is 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you !🔥
you are one of the nicest people on Earth!!! thank you again
Wow, thank you!
The best, thank you!
You're welcome!
I think highly of Moog's own "Model D" apps on iOS and MacOS. IMO, they are comparable in basically tonal quality. But the Mini D is on the MPC, and I'm really diggin' it so far!
This would be a great comparison - Moog's "Model D" app VS AKAI's MINI D
Mpc is a enough powerfull machine to emulate 3 analog oscillators and much, much more.. 😄
Thanks!
You're welcome!
Akai’s Mini-D is based on a Minimoog, not the Sub 37 or Rogue. Also, try hitting the “plus” sign on the feedback (so it’s blue), and have the “analog” cranked to 70-80%. It’s sublime.
Yes, of course, this is why I'm comparing just a clean single oscillator and a filter sweep there is no way to do proper detailed comparison between those synth's! Thanks for the tips - I'm just starting to explore MINI D ! Sub 37 has a brutal feedback feature, in general it is a very much always distorted synth, I had to turn feedback ft off and lower OSC level to get to actual clean-ish waveform.
@@MusicianParadise - I hear you - and I really do appreciate your content on your channel - keep it coming! If you use the feedback feature on Mini-D, just make sure you’ve got the filter set to Classic and the Feedback shows a “+” and is blue, then ease up on the Gain and Feedback. It’s criminally good, IMHO. And that Analog knob does have a very subtle but noticeable effect (I find between 70-80% is nice, 90-100 gets pretty unpredictable).
@@EnochLight I’ll try it !
I'll have to give that a try, thanks!
I tried it and adding feedback and analog really makes the Mini D come alive. Thanks!
preciate the packs.
Thank you!
Great
Thanks!
Thanks for the video thanks. A lot of aliasing when using the filter on the Mini D, hope they can fix it somehow 😞.
I think that aliasing is actually AKAI's emulation of vintage Moog ladder filter. In the modern mode is not so obvious.
Actually I´m confused by this since the Rogue had the same Filter behaviour that sounds like aliasing
Super nice vid. What about the Akai Force? Is the Mini D also included in it’s latest update?
Yes, I think so! AKAI Force is usually ahead of MPC in terms of development. For example, Force already has direct disk streaming, MPC not yet!
@@MusicianParadise Thank you for the quick reply 🤜🤛
@@MusicianParadise don’t wait for disk streaming, it’s not
Coming.
Just hack live with hakai or Iamforce.
It was a game changer for performance for me. I use forceos for live and mpc for composing. Their presets are interchangeable! So sound made in mpc can be opened and played within force. No more clunky pc setups for me! Plus I have battery in live , which force doesn’t have
@@micindir4213 ohhh, hakai rabbit hole!!!
I'll say this: off rip that first comparison was closer than I expected & that's coming from an analog synth nut. Now, obviously there's a pretty big difference - HOWEVER - I'm absolutely convinced my Analog Heat could tighten that up ngl - Air has been doing really well, the Jura synth genuinely impressed me
This is exactly how I think about the Mini D: pass it through the Analog Heat and resample. The Jura synth is very impressive.
@@MusicianParadise they have a 40% off right now & your video was all I needed to see btw, I'm gonna check if you have affiliate links also just so I can click on em for you, if you do for this specifically I feel really bad because I had it loaded in a cart & the first thing I did was find your video, I didn't even think to check...
Dude, I've been subbed since I discovered your free progression packs & next paycheck I'm joining your Patreon out of principle, even if only temporarily (I don't typically do this at all please don't take that personally, it's actually a massive compliment lol) - you deserve it fr.
@@audreyazwell thank you very much for your kind words and support 🙏
Shit hit the fan when you pulled the rogue out 😂😂😂😂
haha exactly !
who makes that MPC tilt stand?
Stand from Roadworx not MPC specific but works fine.
www.thomann.de/pt/roadworx_synthesizer_stand.htm
One thing though, it is very heavy!
Even there was no Minimoog, the comparison with two hardware Moogs is nice, maybe better than comparing to lots of software versions. Because no two analog hardware synths sound the same. Even if you had two original Minimoogs from 1970, people would probably argue they do not sound the same. Therefore, having more than one hardware synth gives an interesting context for the comparison.
Exactly, this was the idea behind my video! As I don't own a Minimoog I decided to use just a single oscillator from each synth to make some kind of "fair" comparison.
You can hear the difference. Lots of good low end with analogue.
Oh yes!
I'm finally getting Mini D. I'm tired of using hype synth for bass. Hype doesnt produce low enough frequencies for my taste. I'm really enjoying my "swiss army knife" mpc.
Oh yes, modern MPC is in fact "swiss army knife" of music production!
great vid; where is this guys accent from?
I was born in Soviet Union (Russia) but my family immigrated to Portugal in the 1990s so, there's a lot of accent's, lol!
the mini d is great for the price of 59 bucks and its plays well with serum
Agree! + a lot of presets!
@@MediaMusik777 I’m about to purchase the Jura right now!
I am convinced that in 2023 the minid is more useful and fit for purpose than the real stuff. And maybe my ears are too old but I don't hear all this great difference, apart from the resonant filter, which is probably enough not to set it to the maximum!
Agree! MINI D is a great addition to AKAI instruments and it just make workflow faster!
Wow that aliasing with the filter sounds horrible, sounds like a cheap algorithm running at 44.1 kHz with no oversampling and no band limiting
well, the modern filter mode is smoother somehow :) oversampling and band limiting probably too much to ask for a plugin developed primarily for a standalone hardware platform with limited CPU. Of course, is hard to compare it to the state of the art modern software synth!
@@MusicianParadise It’s a quad core cpu that’s quite productive. Even single good voice would make a difference. Air aren’t known as va-synth producers, ohmforce are (their OSCs are in serum) or u-he. Pretty sure they could’ve hire somebody to code it well enough to fit this sbc. Otherwise it’s really solid plug-in, on par with odyssey. They both do a lot to make mpc synth workstation. I think automation is best part of it. Too bad baseline is “dumb” synth. A good Osc and filter models would do wonders to that one.
I'm just learning about this Mini D. I bet it costs an arm and a leg too.
Yes, I think it's quite expensive for what it is. Hopefully AKAI will do some black Friday sales, I used the demo in my video!
Nah, it’s on sale plus there’s a 10% off coupon floating around the MPC-forums.
@@EnochLight 10% cool, good to know!
Behringer d is excellent (even if you’re not on a budget)
@@ManCalledMif oh, yes!
A lot aliasing on the Akai Mini D...... 🤔🤔
Yes, this is the price you pay to use the Mini Moog emulation on a standalone device.

something about the analog gear you cannot emulate. The hardware sounds less harsh, warmer, in other words better in every way!
It is getting closer and closer, but not possible with the very limited processing power of the MPC. I'm still into it but it is probably too expensive like the rest of the new plugins.
@@inthefade it's been getting closer and closer for sometime now lol. Even Arturia Collections are pretty good but not good enough compared to the original ones.
I agree! But the convenience sometimes wins over sound quality...
@@MusicianParadise yes it's true
Well that and the Mini D plugin isn’t an emulation of the Sub 37 though, it’s an emulation of the Mini Moog, which would still sound better.
It’s nothing whatsoever like the real thing . But it’s ok though.
Exactly! And the presets of the MINI D actually very useful and more controllable them the real Moog sounds, which are usually quite difficult fit into the mix without an EQ!
Considering the plugin is modelled after a completely different synth... I'd say so! The Sub 37 isn't like the real thing either.
So basically Moog is overpriced pos?
If you are looking for the "Moog sound," the Behringer Model D will likely suffice. Modern, expensive Moog synthesizers offer extensive modulation capabilities, more flexible filters, and better build quality. AKAI's Mini D is a great option for those who want integration with the hardware MPC platform and a plethora of quality presets at the expense of analog mojo and some digital aliasing artefacts. However, some Moog synths, such as the Sirin or Minitaur, may be slightly overpriced.
Sub 37 is no Minimoog
Yes, this is why I'm only comparing single oscillators only!
