    He is riding 16 miles in the middle of nowhere on cheap bike components. He is full of it. People keep on taking about cheap components but how is that reflected in the current performance of the bike. He said that he has had the bike for over ten years. If you can maintain a $160 bike for over ten years and trust it to ride in the middle of nowhere currently, the bike has more value than you are giving it credit for.

      +Stuart Perry I used to do century races on this same bike (mine was blue) when I first started really getting into cycling. Very slow and very heavy but it did surprisingly well.

      +Stuart Perry These bikes mostly do work well but only if they're properly assembled and maintained - which many of them are not. Especially improper assembly can be deadly and I've seen a lot of bikes that qualify as death traps - both on the internet and in real life.
      I've put 1200+ km on a bike that cost me less than a decent tire ($40) but I'd never do it if I didn't know how to fix/tune-up stuff myself because the bike does need a lot of it.

    • @t3knoman00
      @t3knoman00 6 років тому

      Thats the truth, bikes need to be properly assembled and maintain. that is why i always recommend assembling the bike yourself, so you get an understanding on how the bike is assembled, which means you then know what is wrong and what is not wrong. Assembling a bike is great way to learn about how your equipment works even for beginners. Yes i know it is a pain in the ass, but i assembled my first cheapo mountain bike years ago, probably 10 years, it was a pain the ass and took me all day, but learned quickly from what was squeeking and what was wrong.

      I can correct you. That is not really in the middle of nowhere. That little town is across the river from Washington, MO. After crossing the bridge you run into dutzow and Marthasville, MO. Everyone in the the bottoms their have been to this town as well as most people in Washington. I’m not going to change your opinion on the location, that is just what I know.

    I love your channel. One of the reason's i got into biking. I just got a trek Dual sport and kind of jumpedhead first into commuting to my college classe's, 20 miles round trip which i know for some isn't bad at all. I've heard of a few doing 30 mile one way commutes. But it feels like an accomplishment to me . there aren't many bike commuter's in this part of oregon. Trying to work up to a 40 mile round trip ride but i'm not going to push it yet as i've only been doing it for a few week's. Figuring out what gear i need/what just add's extra weight and clothing that works best depending on the weather.

      +connly33 That sounds like a trip, connly33! I think most bike commuters travel < 10 miles one way, but there are definitely many who travel further and still enjoy it!

    This makes me want to ride our local trail, the Baldwin Rail Trail in north Florida.... it's significantly shorter than the Katy trail, but it's got a really nice, long tree canopy tunnel. It's really pretty out there.

    Hi BikeBlogger. The return ride's just as interesting as your out ride. It look like great trail to get to and maintain a good speed. We have the Trans Pennine Trail in my neck of the woods. The councils put obstacles/gates along the trail so you have to slow or stop. Rather frustrating to be honest. And it's a credit to the team/rangers and people that cycle or walk the Katy Trail, although you commented on some junk on it, I didn't see any litter or rubbish on it.
    Thanks for posting it BikeBlogger. Keep them coming.

    • @BikeBlogger
      @BikeBlogger  9 років тому +1

      BARNTRIKEMAN The Trans Pennine Trail length looks to be comparable to the Katy Trail. They have some obstacles/gates at certain points on the Katy Trail, which is nice to keep motorized traffic off, but I know some day I'm going to be spacing out and accidentally run into one of the gates. Haha! The trail was very clear though you're right.

    The sign you saw is a river navigational sign - the nautical equivalent of 'you are here' signs. The letters on the sign and the sign color help river navigators locate their exact position on the river on nautical maps.

    I would personally go used road bike, or a $489 Trek hybrid like the 7.2 FX with better components, nicer aluminum frame, the hard case $46 a piece tires standard... a bike really made to last, but if it works for you that is very cool.

    Excellent video man! Now this is what I'm talking about, not just a bike trail but The Katy Trail!!! I would really like to ride this trail someday. Hope you do more of this in the future BikeBlogger. I was wondering what kind of computer do you use/recommend? Do you utilize wired or wireless? I tried wireless in the past but found it wasn't reliable because it kept losing a signal. Im not sure if it was because it was defective or that it was low end (Inexpensive)??? It was made by Bell bicycle products. Maybe it was both,you reckon? Been thinking about getting a wireless computer for my bike but would like to hear your input first. Maybe they have gotten better since the last time I got one, about 10 years ago. Anyhow, again, great video.Till next time, Keep it between the ditches!😁

      SolarReturn Hey there SolarReturn. I usually use a really simple (and cheap) wired Sigma BC 509 computer that gives me only speed, total distance, total time, odometer, and clock time. Although in this video I have the wired Sigma BC 1009 - still nothing fancy - but also gives me average speed and max speed. I have no experience with wireless computers but have had no trouble with my wired systems so see little reason to change. Thanks, I'll try to keep my bike and myself out of the ditches. :D

    My commute is 25 miles exactly not that I ride it everyday. I plan to get up to three days a week but I am still building up my strength.
    Question about your light. I know its USB rechargeable but can you hot swap batteries if needed? That is, can you bring along another 18650 fully charged and swap it out if you need to?

    • @BikeBlogger
      @BikeBlogger  9 років тому

      lornaz1975 That sure is an impressive commute, lornaz1975, close to a 4:1 commute distance compared to myself! Good question about the light. I've never had to swap batteries because the 400 lumen setting is rated for nearly 4 hours of battery life, but you can. The battery that came in my flashlight is a Fenix rechargeable li-ion battery ARB-LT1 NCR18650B 3.6V 3400mAh with built-in protection circuit. It also takes regular 18650 li-on batteries or two cr123a batteries.

    • @lornaz1975
      @lornaz1975 9 років тому

      BikeBlogger Yeah if it was any longer I don't think I would commute at all. It is 13.5 miles to work and 11.5 or 11.7 back home, one hour 15 min to work and exactly one hour back. There are some nasty hills too. Nashville is not bike friendly due to the hills. I decided that the problem with my light was that the battery was low. At least I think that was a big part of it. So it probably was shining at half power. I still think I might need to upgrade.

    • @BikeBlogger
      @BikeBlogger  9 років тому

      lornaz1975 Lighting technology moves pretty fast. I'm sure you can find a brighter light out there today of similar size and weight.

    what kind of tires are recommended for this type of riding

    • @BikeBlogger
      @BikeBlogger  7 років тому

      I recommend tires at least 32mm wide with a little bit of tread. Something you might find on a cyclocross bike or touring bike.

    • @boxlid214
      @boxlid214 7 років тому

      I've used Vittoria Randonneur II Pros for thousands of miles on gravel and pavement (32mm size and 120tpi), great tires. The non-pros (30 tpi city and 60 tpi standard ones) are tougher, but a harsh ride and tend to beat you up a little. Use normal tubes, but get ones with removable valve cores, and treat them with Stan's sealant. That width of tire is fine for ~160lb rider and 20-30lbs of gear, go wider if you and gear is heavier.

      Silas Rogers Hello, Silas Rogers. I can get it above 20 mph (32 kph) on flat road, but it is a heavy bike weighing 33 lb (15 kg). But it sure does go fast down hills!

      Ohhhh ok I see still pretty fast tho right?

    • @BikeBlogger
      @BikeBlogger  9 років тому +1

      Silas Rogers Yes, it is pretty fast. It helps that the tires are smooth and the frame geometry allows the rider to get low and aero. It is still harder to climb hills with it compared to lighter weight bikes.

      +BikeBlogger I asked cause seeing if ur bout my height so ya are as im 6'1." I know there's one ur on 22.5 & the other is 25, which would u think is best if ya were gonna go buy another after riding this? I wanna figure out something for a bike soon, not worth much $ now so will have to be cheapie. I have had peddle strike a little with tires but worse toe on pavement with my size 12 feet riding 26" tire bike. the 700c's was told work out to be 29"tire, was hoping that meant my feet would be little higher off the road when at bottom of pedal rotation. also seen academy has 29" mountain bike called huffy tactic might be worth try just doesn't say frame size and I know my back will pay for it if I don't get correct frame size. any suggestions on cheap 29er mountain bike with good frame for us 6' guy's? I really want one of each, mb for general running around hood, maybe some ruffer off road and road bike for long not so ruff trail rides. also is there such thing as 700c off road tires knobby like mb? ps im on paper in mo for self defense situation, guilty till proven rich ya know so might "take advantage" of my stay and try the katey, im original from here but lived in co before making the horrible choice to come back for house issues/visit, I ever get out of here I won't make that mistake again so while stuck here might as well get on that trail I've always heard about, ya made it seem doable for newbie

    • @BikeBlogger
      @BikeBlogger  7 років тому

      I rode the 22.5, which felt good. The larger size would have been too big for me. Also consider your inseam (standover height). The measurement you want is your true inseam not your pants inseam. Height off the ground is called the bottom bracket drop and usually listed in the bike specifications frame geometry. It is higher for bikes meant to be ridden off road sometimes. www.cyclingabout.com/understanding-bicycle-frame-geometry/ 700c knobby tires come wide up to about 42mm (1.65") but you will be limited by the frame and fork clearances, which are usually less on bikes equipped with 700c wheels. I can't recommend any particular bike since I don't ride bikes with wide tires like that right now.
