  • On my bicycle commute home I discussed my past bicycle accidents.
    The majority of my early accidents involved riding too fast on turns with loose gravel in the road. Make sure to have your outer crank arm down and put as much body weight over that outer crank arm on the turns to increase your traction, and keeping your center of mass lower to the ground can also help.
    The majority of my more recent accidents involved unclipping too late from my clipless pedals when learning to ride clipless. Whenever you come to an intersection I recommend unclipping early to avoid a fall. I generally only unclip one foot.
    The majority of my most recent accidents involved falling on the ice due to riding too fast and without studded tires in the winter. I recommend studded tires whenever the temperature falls below freezing - and this can happen as the sun sets earlier in the winter so don't forget you may need them later at night after leaving work!
    I have never crashed into another vehicle, person, or a tree, thankfully.
    Stay alert, and be safe out there. If you ride reasonably you should have little to no trouble at all.
    Thanks for watching! And please subscribe!

    I almost had a collision with a motorist today during my commute - I pedaled in front of a McDonald's fast food entrance while the motorist was having a Big Mac attack!

      Kevin Gary Scary, Kevin Gary. I ride past a McDonalds often on one of my commute routes, but fortunately it has now closed and they began tearing it down this past week.

    on the topic of sitting upright while riding... I love in a town that is over run with spandex and carbon every nice weekend so the impression is to the locals is inconvenience and intrusion. Riding upright in street clothes may send a utilitarian and human element to other road users.

    I had an accident involving a piece of debris (a bit of old TV satellite dish) in the bike lane going downhill. It wasn’t pleasant! In fact I still have the scars to prove it. Ever since then I’ve tried to take the lane when going downhill.

    Tyre blew out going downhill........yep i have had tube punctures when speeding downhill......
    Two weeks into getting my new MTB joined my local cycling club and went out for a little trail outside the city,after lots of jumps,skids and riding on loose gravel we were returning back to the store(a national cyclist running a store/club)
    a senior citizen decides to jump in my way,and i get separated from the group..
    A down hill road to a railway intersection near a lake and i try to be a hotshot and ride full speed into the turn and *pop* front tube gets a pinch puncture......i loose control over bike wobble like shit all over the road and finally dramatically brake to a halt near the lake's gate........
    Since i am a genius......,didn't carry a patch kit....40min and a phone call later got picked by my cousin
    well it sure did scare the shit out of me that day..hahaha....
    here is the location where it happened,you can see how inclined the road is goo.gl/maps/Czjp6HVU4W62

    @James Townrow My handlebars did not come with my bike because I choose to get road bars instead and later decided to swap them because I rarely ride in the drops. The swap wasn't hard, but did require removing the old handlebars and brake cables and levers, and installing the new handlebars and brake cables and levers. My bullhorn handlebars are Origin 8, and the brakes are Tektro R540 calipers with Tektro RL340 levers. Complete specs of the bicycle featured in this video are listed on my website here bikeblogger.com/?page_id=1235

    Hey BB, another interesting upload. Can you tell me what bullhorn bars and brakes you use on your Wabi Lightning? Did you set up/install them yourself, or did they come already installed on the bike? If it's the former, was it a simple job to swap bars? Thanks in advance. Jim

    i live in a town in nj that doesnt have sidewalks and was riding to the local store on the shoulder and some knucklehead yelled at me and said hey ride on the sidewalk,i looked at them and said where do you see sidewalks? i have the right of way so piss off lol!

      depends on the town and most towns don't care,they have more important things to do than to worry about who is riding the sidewalk or who isn't lol!

    @Catalin Cernamorit Your legs can get bigger, although I think it depends on genetics, how much you ride and how hard you ride because I ride a single speed bicycle everywhere and yet I still have rather skinny legs. If you ride lots of hills all the time your chances are greater. If you gain muscle and eat a lot of fatty foods your chances are also probably greater.

    As a daily cycle commuter in D.C., only one of my (at least weekly) near misses have been with a car. Most are because of other cyclists. Usually it's because they blow through red lights and stop signs (usually without slowing down), but sometimes it's because they're riding at full speed on the sidewalk and jump out into traffic without looking.

    The roads look so empty, here in the UK there would be cars everywhere.
    I had a bit of fun tonight, I was riding my bike and I went over a "sleeping policeman" (arched bump to slow cars down), my rear pannier came off and stuck between the rear rack and wheel. The wheel came to a sudden halt and I had to get off and retrieve the pannier. I put it back on the rack and continued. Fun....lol. At least there were no cuts and bruises today :-)

      I live in the US. I am pretty sure BikeBlogger is very knowledgeable and chooses his routes so they are empty, and not because they are short routes. There are some videos where he gets onto main streets, but he doesn't stay there very long. Out of the central city of most US cities, the plan of the streets since the '50s has mostly been to make routes through residential streets useless except for the people that live within a few blocks of the area. So cars get onto the main streets as soon as they can. If you look at a map of these neighborhoods, you can see why. The other day a lost motorist asked me how to get to a street which was nearby, perhaps five blocks away I thought. I had to admit to him I could not explain how to get there without a map. For the route I go, it is useless if you miss a turn to do anything but go back to that turn. But if I go before people leave for work, I will hardly see a car until I cross a main street.

    • @BikeBlogger
      @BikeBlogger  9 років тому

      Dan Weidner Hi, Dan Weidner. I have used a few different lights in the pas, but I don't have a Nite Rider headlamp. The bracket in the video is from the Fenix ALB-10 mount featured my other video here ua-cam.com/video/DcZmABLLPlE/v-deo.html

    • @weda0604
      @weda0604 9 років тому

      +BikeBlogger ... wonderful just thought I'd check. So my light fell off twice and upon the second time failed to light anymore. I sent it in and and the company refurbished it with a new LED and circuitry. Either way, the bracket it clips into allows the light to dislodge over bumps. I solved that by putting a heavy rubber band around the dismount tab and light which makes it secure. I was thinking of maybe going with the Bontrager Ion 700 which has a much more secure mounting system. Either way, thanks for the info and I'll have to give that vid a watch.
      Happy biking!

      GERMAN SHEPARD My commute is only 4 miles (6.5 km), so I keep a spare set of clothes at work in case I sweat a lot or it rains hard, and otherwise I just wear my street clothes and keep a set of professional clothes at work for meeting with clients. This way I carry very little on my rides. I plan to do a video on exactly what I carry and what I keep at work in the future.

      I recommend measuring your leg length. There are online calculators that can help you fit yourself to a bike like here www.competitivecyclist.com/Store/catalog/fitCalculatorBike.jsp Basically you need to have a slight bend in your leg when fully extended on the pedal downstroke, and a slight bend in your arms when on the handlebars in your normal riding position.
