I learned a couple things recently about how perfectionism holds me back. 1. It makes sense to set goals that I plan to hit 5 out of 7 days a week. That gives me a little bit of built in flexibility for when I had a rough day or got sick or wanted to prioritize seeing a friend from out of town, etc. Over time, I imagine that this will still build a habit that'll become automatic. And doing something most days is a heck of a lot better than not doing it at all, plus I don't make myself feel bad about it for missing a day here or there. 2. Worrying about the ideal means sometimes I end up making 0 progress towards a goal. I realized this with brushing my teeth at night. I like to eat right before I go to bed which is at about 1am, but I was too tired by that point to brush my teeth. Ideally I'd brush them after my last meal to reduce the risk of plaque, but not doing it at all is much worse than doing it at 10pm, so now I do it at 10 because that's what works for me. 3. It's too easy to experience information overload and switch from goal to goal because all of them feel like they'd be beneficial to me. I want 8-9 hours of sleep and to meditate and to read books and to walk 6,000+ steps a day and to meet new people. Again, I learned to be ok with the idea that I won't be living up to that ideal of doing all those things every day, but it's most attainable to learn 1 new habit at a time and focus on that one. My sleep has been solid for awhile and now I'm doing the 6,000 steps 5 days a week. The number of steps is my main goal, and then each day after I hit that, I sometimes have the time and energy to do one of my other goals. If not, I don't worry about it because I know that my focus for right now is the steps, and I'm making progress on that. This was a big part of helping me getting out of depression too; my goals then were just to get out of bed, shower, consume something, and take care of my cat. If I did those things, I congratulated myself because I took care of myself and did some things that were a little hard for me. We all gotta start somewhere, and I find that giving myself some grace is helpful. Then on the days that I felt up to doing a little bit more, I'd go outside or see a friend or something.
I've realized I've been trying to do someone else's plan. I am in the process of writing out what I want to do, what will work for me and my schedule. My problem is I start but lose interest or get busy with other things.
Whenever I start making excuses or other concerns, I ask myself if they are valid reasons. Are there any dire consequences for ignoring my excuses? If yes, then I follow them. If there isn’t any validity in my excuses, then I just ignore them
This is such well curated video. Here is a template which I created, and I have bookmarked this video, I think I will comeback every time I use this framework or template build on top of it. Ideas > Action 1. Compounded Action 2. The 3 What's - What does this mean for me? - What is the Obstacle? - What will I do? / What is the plan of Action? 3. Habit Stacking > First Action Step? > What are the Next Actions Steps? Note: Every step will get me closer to my destination. >> Identify the Pattern to Take Action / ACT. >>> 7 Step Exercise 1. Identify one thing you want to do that you've been putting off. 2. Break it down to the first action step. 3. Ask yourself the 3 what questions. 4. Dedicate 10 to 20 minutes to that thing, for at least 10 days. 5. Link it to an existing habit or duration. 6. Review your progress at the end of 10 days. 7. Comment what you will be taking action on.
In the exercise part, I have very clear answers till point 3. I have everything set and written for two things I want to get to. Well coming to the exercise point 4, I am getting deviated, my mind is saying lets look at it an another day. I think I need to focus and get it SCHEDULED, as you mentioned, the WHEN is important and I need to MAKE A TIME for it. Thank you.
This video should be the first ever productivity video anyone watches. Bravo Austin, will definitely help me absorb and apply your videos, and others videos much better.
I just rewatched the video & 10 minutes for 10 days is really doable. You're right, we have so many 10 minutes throughout our day to work on our plan. It reminds me of the book you did a video on 168 hours, You Have More Time Than You Think. I appreciate your videos!
I just learnt about self improvement like 2 months ago, since then i have been constantly trying to get into the habits that i know will benefit me in long term . But what happens is let's say if i had a bad day at school or anything else i get upset. that by all means should not affect my habits that i have been trying to build. but if i fail for a day / a bad day turns to a bad week for me. and before i realize it's always too late.
I heard this advice somewhere about sticking to your habits, that you have to kind of convince yourself to never skip 2 days in a row. Skipped 1 day because of a bad mood? Cool, no worries. Ensure that you make a nice comeback tomorrow 👍🏻
Hard to comment, but it must be done. I have an addiction problem. It’s time to be accountable… First action step: I’ve been able to wake up consistently at 5am so… I will take 10min in the morning by setting a timer first. I will reaffirm my convictions for conquering my addiction… I have it written down but I’ve been ignoring them.. I will use prayer also.. What does this do for me? It helps me to be accountable for my actions and pursue my goals for God, me and my family. What is the obstacle? Addiction mindset.. very easily swayed to do wrong when inconsistent and stressed. What will I do? Establish 10 min increments in the morning for the first 10 days, then include 10 min in the evening when I get off of work at 7pm for the next 10 days. I will update every 10 days until I have accomplished my goal. Oct 25 Nov 4 Nov 14 Nov 24 Dec 4 Dec 14 Dec 24 Jan 3 Jan 13 Jan 23

Okay. Have decided to give it a go. I have been trying to learn flute for quite some time. Have been putting it off for years. First action step - Just grab the flute from the cupboard and practice it for some time. What does this mean for me? - Well, imagine being able to play flute in a year. It's like a dream come true. Obstacle - Not sure. Just need to allocate some time. What will I do? / Linking to an existing habit - 20 mins of flute practice after dinner everyday. For next 10 days. Will update here 10 days from now.
The idea of following someone else’s plan instead of making one for our own good was definitely eye opening. And, oh no, as for the exercise, I’m far too ambitious to have any hope for myself in ten days. Though i’ve always had goals in four major aspects. Studying (always hard to do!), drawing (another hard thing to do), writing, and reading. I’d add learning Spanish as bonus, but it’s mainly those four. I am also far too embarrassed to give any other detailed information in case this fails and i’ve grown inconsistent in the process, though my timeframe is 10 minutes (for now). This is definitely impulsive of me to do. But I’m editing this comment on the 30th for an update. Wish me luck! Also good to see that the notebook is still alive. EDIT: Here it is haha * What does it mean to me? It means being better and consistent. Something I was always so slow at. * What’s the obstacle? Myself lol. I procrastinate often. * What will I do? And I definitely need to learn how to pick up a book sometime. Really. It’s a bit hard to do these all considering my schedule (I’m a student with a hectic commute, so drawing is gyusually out), but it’s manageable at times. Very doable if I don’t have classes. It’s great too considering I work pretty well when I time myself. This was fun to do and definitely interesting to see the results. Ten minutes is a long time in our already lengthy day, it was fascinating to live those minutes doing something that always felt so hard to start. Highly recommend! A bad day can have a massive effect on us. The reason is it brings our momentum to a halt, making it harder to get started again
Tell yourself that it was just 1 day and that you'll start again tomorrow. Try not to feel guilty about 1 day.
