    After several listens of Now and Then, I think its absolutely great. Maybe not a single if released back in the 60's, but would have made a great album track. John's voice sounds fantastic. Definitely happy Paul insisted on finishing this off. Well done....

    I’ve preordered Now And Then from iTunes, the cassette single from the official Beatles website, and I plan to get the new Red & Blue albums on CD. I’ve been a Beatles fan since the original Red & Blue’s were released in 1973. I was about 6 years old. I’ve since bought the entire catalog of albums from both UK and US. (EMI and Capitol that is). I don’t have a turntable worthy of the Beatles, so I’ll stay with CDs and cassettes for my physical media. I will NEVER give up on physical media.

    Congratulations on 400 episodes Darren, Allan and Ken. Something about the Beatles was the first podcast I started listening to and I listened to that right before this, and I recommend that if you have time you listen to every episode. I have listened to the Fab Forum show many times and like Al I love when a kid as young as 8 calls in. The Beatles music is truly timeless. My only complaint about the red and blue albums is that why isn't Helter Skelter included in the set list? It's one of the most hard rocking Beatles songs which young people should absolutely hear.

I was 2 when they did that photo and till today I am heartened to see fans coming to commemorate the music. The Crossing is protected legally as a historic site too. • @chrisdelisle3954
    @chrisdelisle3954 11 місяців тому +1

    Outside of the Jackson interview, my favorite was the Mark Lewisohn interview. Also, I really liked the guy - sorry, can't remember his name - who is a bassist, and helped explain the brilliance of Paul's playing on "Something," among other things.
    I was quite moved by "Now And Then." I don't know that it was specifically the objective song, itself, but the sentiment behind it. It seems to have gained resonance in the world at large in a post-Covid world. It also has some personal resonance in it as I've since lost both of my in-laws in the last 5 months or so.
    I'd never heard the demo before so this was brand new. It sounds like a song they might have worked on in the early 80's if the rumor is true that John and Paul had planned on getting together in early '81.
    In regards to Allan's comments about any future Anthology release...wouldn't it be great if they released an entire disc of the evolution of "Strawberry Fields Forever?"

    I kind of feel like this wasn't thought out very well and may have been a rush for Christmas. Normally there would have been more lead time. I agree about Now and Then being on Anthology 3 and re doing those and expanding them. I was thinking that maybe there will be a CD release that would contain: Free as a Bird, Real Love and Now and Then but who knows. The only thing wrong with Magical Mystery Tour is that it was shown in B&W on Boxing Day; I wonder if there is footage laying around that Peter Jackson could restore? I am not very happy with the "covers" that were placed on the Red album and I am also wondering if the Red/Blue really need to be done or if they could have made a new greatest hits or compilation package altogether and used the three Anthology period singles in that. I loved the Red/Blue albums when they came out and I guess with the new vinyl era "greatest hits "makes some sense again. I am looking forward to Rubber Soul and am hoping for more bonus material for a revamped Get Back or even if it were put as bonus in the upcoming Let it Be DVD (if they do it). Congrats on #400! I hadn't heard about I am the Walrus being different that the version on the original release...different how?

    IS IT JUST ME...or does the guitar solo/tribute to George's slide style remind you of the solo in Pink Floyd's "Young Lust"? I ran the Now and then solo through my head and it segued right over to Young Lust.

    Everybody was expecting Rubber Soul remix this year, but I was thinking remixes of the 1963 albums and singles. I thought they might do both albums, but instead we got Red and Blue albums. I already pre-ordered both, because those early songs are the ones I've been waiting for to get remixes. They needed new stereo mixes most. I still hope they do the first 6 albums?

    Wow, what a lukewarm reaction to Now and Then after having had the privilege of hearing it twice already. Well, at least Darren showed a bit more enthusiasm... I've wanted that song in a finished form by Paul and the gang for a decade now so will definitely be much more emotional for me to finally hear it tomorrow! I've known to cry many times while listening to the demo, can't imagine not tearing up with the MAL magic added into the mix.
    Oh, and very happy to have Red and Blue reissued this year, on their 50th anniversary, which nobody talks about either...

      I certainly wouldn't consider my reaction to NOw and Then to be lukewarm. I did say I love the melody, and the production, and that John's voice is right there in the clear. But it's not easy to judge a song after just a few listens. I tend to wait until I know a song (or album) really well before I give any kind of full review.

    I agree with Alan Kozinn that Now and Then would have made more sense on expanded Anthology sets. Failing that, remix Free as a Bird and Real Love using Jackson's technology to remove Jeff Lynne's production excesses and put the three songs out as an EP. The cover of the Now and Then single is awful. Completely unimaginative and boring. Why isn't the band's name on the cover? Why are the Giles Martin remixes being used on the Blue album. None of the original mixes were problematic and needed remixing. And why did they screw up with the vinyl version by including the expanded tracks on the third LPs rather than putting them in chronological order. I am curious to hear the remixed early tracks that are only available in mono.

    Despite being a great song with beautiful production, Now and Then doesn't sit well with me as a Beatles song. George didn't directly contribute and his presence can't be felt. The drumming doesn't sound like signature Ringo. Normally he's more subtle. Unlike the two 1995 songs, Now and Then sounds more like a band trying hard to sound like the Beatles, producing a fantastic product, but you know it's just not them. I would have supported this being on a 3-song EP with Free As A Bird and Real Love being remastered the same way to fix John's vocals. Admittedly, it is a nice send-off. But it should NOT be on the Blue album -- that's just a cash grab. And that awful cover! I was hoping the 10-minute Photoshop job was just a placeholder until the awesome sleeve was revealed on release day. What an atrocious end to the band's history as visual arts pioneers.

  • @MercuriusHibernicus
    @MercuriusHibernicus 11 місяців тому +2

    Regarding Now and Then the first thing that jumps out at you is the incredible clarity of Lennon's vocal, you can hear what attracted McCartney to the song... but what a mediocre song they've ended up creating. The intro of the drums is just jarring, was this Ringo's first attempt at playing thru? The entire arrangement of drums, bass, guitar, strings is cluttered and mushed together, the whole thing sounds very awkwardly constructed, especially the sudden appearance of old man McCartney vocals.
    I think this track really reveals how poor a producer/mixer Giles is, there is no space in the track for any of the musical parts to breathe or be enjoyed... it all comes across as more of a novelty bonus track than Free as a Bird or Real Love... in fact the funny thing is it makes me regard those 90's reunion songs on a higher level...
    I think they've really waited too long to do this as neither McCartney or Starr have the same creative instincts... to my ears since McCartney had his late career renaissance with Chaos, Memory and Electric Arguments his music has become embarrassingly unlistenable... so the 'final' Beatles song has ended up as a bit of an oddity helping to maximize those corporate profits and wring the last penny out of obsessive collectors and completists... I think the Beatles & Stones really need to be left in the 20th Century... all they represent now are brands more akin to Coca Cola and McDonalds... whatever is done with them in the future will have less and less to do with their original creative spark and the times in which it was made...
