I had the exact rhythm problem on the fast bends part towards the end that you described and this little exercise of plucking each note solved it. Self/youtube taught, so videos like these are awesome for me. Thank you!!!
Great video man. I especially love the way you dont just show the notes, you show what scales they orignate from which helps us get a better understanding of the guitar in general.
Very Nice. Thanks for this. Page is such a tasty player. I love the live Stairway To Heaven solo too on the Song Remains The Same album. His live guitar tone on Song Remains the Same is a favorite. So simple but so rock and roll. I want a Royal MSG Plexi one day with the KT88’s. When I was a young teenager in the 80’s, Page inspired air guitar was a must to rock out with the big HiFi on blast and no one home. Inspired me to pick up a guitar and start learning.
How amazing is that. I hope you get the dream amp some day soon. 🤘🏻🔥 It’s fascinating to hear all these stories of inspiration, especially when Jimmy got you into guitar in the first place. He’s inspired millions. 🔥
That Live Page Solo on TSRTS : Gibson EDS 1275 is loaded with Gibson T Tops (7.5k Roughcast Short A5 Magnets) that fantastic "Hollow Chirp " sound is the T Tops in the MIDDLE Position.. That will get you the tone. Someone elsewhere commented his toggle switch in the film in pointing down so they thought it was 'treble pickup'... Wrong!. That selector switch visable in the film, selects the 6 or 12 string neck. The pickup selector in the middle of the guitar cannot be seen. I replicate Jimmys 1973 TSRTS sound on my channel.. The secret sauce is the UNBALANCED pickup set . Not so much the KT88 Plexi. Richie Blackmore used a KT88 Plexi for a completely different tone. The Royal Plexi is great, but the pickups are wrong in that clip.
@@bryanwilliams3665 Wow. I’m 9 months too late checking out your reply. I checked out your channel. You weren’t kidding. You build pickups that can nail that tone so accurately even through your music man amp with the cmatmod brownie overdrive. Everything you said was true. Nice channel by the way. I say 9 months too late because I just finished a cheap Les Paul that played really well by upgrading all hardware and pickups on it. I went with Wizz Pageys and 21 tone JP wiring. It gets pretty close, but if I’d read this earlier I would’ve gone to you for pickups for sure. Maybe in the future though and another Les Paul. Yours are two conducted and no push-pull pots needed? That’s what I got from your videos. I have 4 conductor Wizz Pageys with all knobs on Bourne 500k push pull pots. The amount of sounds is incredible, but I think I could’ve just got a set from you and got every crucial TSRTS sound I’d been after. Probably for less than the Wizz Pageys. I subscribed to your channel so I can reference it in the future for my next set of pickups. I bought a 1959 HW clone for $773 shipped from Grand Amps in China. Had it 4 months now and it’s a keeper. So I have the amp and the Wizz pickups and 21 tone wiring nail it pretty close. Not sure as close as yours though. Your sound examples come closer than I’ve ever heard.
@@vondragonnoggin Hi , thanks for the kind words... Yes , there were no Push Pull or " out of phase" wiring on Jimmy Pages Les Paul in Zeppelin... Thats all marketing BS!... That famous eBay 21 sound Jimmy Page Wiring harness is what Steve Hoyland did on Jimmy's Back up #2 Les Paul in 1985 ( well after Zeppelin)...Jimmy seldom if ever used that guitar.
Thank you. At last this is surely the most accurate and detailed representation and explanation of each note of this stunning lead break solo. Well done!
Same dude, I wanted to learn stairway but I thought that 8 minutes was a little long so I said fuck it lets learn the solo. Low and behold my favorite guitar teacher on youtube uploads a video on it. Love you Sped, keep it up dude you shred!
I don't even know how Page came up with half the stuff he did especially for his time. He was so far advanced and ahead of his time that no one's still caught up to him.
Totally agree. He crafted some of the most iconic guitar riffs ever. So many people give him stick because of his live performances. Ridiculous, the man is a genius.
Just found you - love your style. You insist on the accuracy of the notes but you teach with humility and a sincere desire to share the discipline of proper delivery for the benefit of others to learn - really nice job with this one and I liked and subscribed after only this one video...that says a lot !! I'll be back a lot - it'll take me about a month to learn this properly but I will get there - thanks very much for the help - you rock !!
About 5 minutes ago I was looking for a tutorial for the solo and this popped up on my recommendation page! I’m at 4:50 so far and I’m not disappointed!🎸🤘🎸🤘
If you listen carefully to the record, you’ll hear Page slide down to the F note on the 4th string at the end of the minor pentatonic phrase in the first part of the solo - instead of playing it on the 8th fret on the 5th string 1:49.
Because it was cut together, who knows? Years ago I did slide back and I do so in my original cover. However, I don’t think you get the definition or control of the note. When you slow it right down it’s so warped. What’s to say we’re not hearing the slide of the barre chord from G down to F and confusing that sonically? I like staying in the first position there. At least we can all agree it’s an F.
The only reason people hate this song is because after 50 years , they're just tired of it as a whole . And i do sympathize with the point . But , there is NO denying this solo !! It has it all in emotion, and just raw WOW factor ,even after all the years since its conception , and i say "conception " as to all the dreams and hopes it birthed. Viva la Page!!! (Edit) Sorry , that was a spectacular lesson , and no way i can't sub. - incredible !!!
He just goes for it live, throwing in a few of the famous licks. You can look at it two ways: “I’m sad I wanted to hear the exact solo” or “I got to see the man himself deliver something unique in a moment, just me and this crowd.” Either way I’d treasure it.
Luv ur teaching style, luv ur tone. I think you get the notes and timing right, no extra notes imagined, misheard or whatever. Keep up the Zep work, we just need to get your views up !
Killer video. I just got the complete, official studio recordings guitar anthology. According to the book, for the final ascending pattern before the fast shredding licks begin, you call it LICK 5, he goes back to the F on the 8th fret of the A string, and then ascends up the pentatonic positions through there. You can also hear on the recording that he is playing on those thicker strings high up, vs. the thinner strings lower on the neck. Obviously, the notation and melody is identical in your version, so I'm not finding fault, just pointing out that there is another place to play it. That's where I naturally went as I'm figuring this out by ear, high up the neck, and other people might prefer to play it there as well. Keep up the great content! Amazing video, once again.
Learned the stairway solo several months back from another UA-camr but never got the rhythm down to the sixth and eleventh lick but I finally got it down now thanks man
After watching all the U-Tube Stairway solo turorials ------------ this one was the best to learn from. Not too fast ----------- not too slow & well explained. Great Job, great playing & Thanks --- wishing you the best.
a moment to appreciate, slowing the song slightly, recording his own backing, probably uploading test videos to see if copyright detects it, tweaking til it doesn't, etc etc, so much work, much appreciated.
Yep... You got me on that F note. I never picked it up either. I just knew there was something I was missing there... for thirty damn years! I used to twist myself up on the 15th fret instead of going up to the 19th. Great video. Feels so much smoother to play,
brother i can not believe i have never seen you on you tube before you are awesome with teaching this solo. i seen it played different ways but urs makes the most sense you have got yourself a new subscriber and hope to see more of your teachings.
Thank you Calum! I equate it to studying the exact text to get the most out of an author. You don’t learn a half arsed Shakespeare play do you? Let’s study the real thing and then take that information away and use it to our advantage creatively. 🙌🏻
Excellent Super....First the whole bend up on the G string on the 7th fret i hardly ever hear people put a tight tease to end it you did it and most just hold the note
Thanks to your video, I've been able to hear this solo so much more clearly. I remember the first timed I saw/heard a youtube vid about it by someone, and I posted, Oh man, you did it EXACTLY! Only to come back a year or two later realizing there were always extra notes. YOURS is the closest I've ever heard, with only one extra note (hammer-on) at :47--AND GUESS WHAT? RIGHT NOW I HEAR THAT NOTE IN THE ORIGINAL, AFTER NEVER HAVING HEARD IT IN MY LIFE. I was going to point out that you missed a spot, and I'M the one who's been missing it. Thank you. Well done, I'm going to learn this from you before I die, lol.
Great to see where I have been getting it wrong, I mean I knew it wasn't quite right, thanks. Those two notes at the beginning, it's the details like that that make this so good. Cheers.
Thank you so much! Love it when peope go in-depth and actually pay attention to what's on the recordings to the smallest nuances. A better tutorial is possible only after we have access to the multitracks.
Glad you enjoyed it and that it was helpful. Yeah it gets difficult though, especially trying to navigate the world of online copyright. This is fair use as I teach it but never play the original, got it firmly stored in my head! Haha
This is how all guitar lessons should be like, straight and direct to the point yet not failing to includes the little details and theory behind the solo

I just want you to know that your posting this is tremendously kind and amazingly well done! No caveats or buts! 😂 Hope you’re doing well!!
I am fairly new to playing guitar. Only started a year ago. I just finished learning my first solo. Its not perfect but I can play it. This will be my second. Thanks for making this video its exactly what I was looking for and great quality
One of my favorite things to do back when we did a take on the Hendrix version of 'All Along the Watchtower' was to lay down this solo on top of it at times.
Great video! “Stairway” isn’t one of the most technical solos ever, but it always floors me when I hear it. There’s something about the first lick from that first bend on the G (D bent up to E) to the F note that resolves it. Pure emotional connection for me.
Totally agree, yeah it might not be Dragon Force on the technical side but amazing how many people miss crucial rhythms or certain notes he resolves on.
Sped Spedding Absolutely. The more you listen to Jimmy the more you realise that the guy really was pretty special. The timing, rhythm and feel is so critical as you point out. Most guys never really get that part. I went through a journey of trying to learn a lot of the shred stuff like Malmsteen decades ago. After a while all the harmonic minor runs and diminished arpeggios start to sound very repetitive; there’s not much room for expression. I’ve ditched all my shred guitars and got a couple of Les Pauls and I’m getting back to basics. Wish I’d done it years ago!
@@donharrold1375 agree....I did the same thing as you back in the early 80s. I never gave Jimmy too much credit because I was after the speed licks. Now at 57, I appreciate how talented Jimmy was. He wrote the most iconic song and guitar solo of all time, among all the rest of his songs. Just a genius. It's one thing playing and copying this, it's a whole different level to write it! To me this is much more rewarding than playing super fast stuff.
That fast repetitive bit has always been tough for me - at first I struggled with the rhythm, but eventually I figured that out, then I though all the notes were picked which meant I had to pick real fast and I always struggled to stay up to speed. Of course I should’ve know there’s a pull-off in there! Thank you for setting me straight on that! Now it’s so much easier to play than I thought!

My friend you’re sorely mistaken, 19 years in service and 8 of those in 2 deserts and you think I need to post something and talk about what note to play and what half bend with double stops is what the writer did and someone else needs to do his own version of it..?? why don’t you post something..?? If you cannot handle criticism when another “Posts” something on your “UA-cam” then don’t do it...!!
You have a nice day now....🤫
@@Incountry too long did not read. put up or shut up.
Your simple kick to start the solo was just purely genuine and incredible. You're truly a guitar champion in your own right.
Thank you so much, that's wicked!🥰
This is the clearest Stairway Solo Lesson on You Tube. Good job my man. Thank you for the emphasis on the swingy part.
Stoked Jesse, thank you for the feedback!
Thanks Manny! Yeah I agree, that’s why I did the mode video recently, going a little more in depth. 🙏🏻
Exactly what we wanted! You really do listen to your viewers. Once again, your tone is the best!
Thank you Bob, and yeah I try to listen as best as I can. 🙏🏻✨
It’s fascinating to hear all these stories of inspiration, especially when Jimmy got you into guitar in the first place.
Great lesson, lots of these on youtube. But your tone and demeanor has you near the top of my list. Thanks for sharing
Cheers Tommy. Glad you liked it. 🙌🏻
10:42 (personal time marker, where i got to one night and shall carry on tomorrow!)
Your playing is incredible man. So clean
Why thank you!
Excellent Sped - I've just become a pateon member :)
Thanks Peter, I saw that! I sent you a message. ✨🤩
Exceptionally well done. You've hit the sweet spot by explaining all the essentials without being repetitive. Very efficacious!
Brilliant, thanks so much. Glad you like the video and hope you got something out of it. 🤘🏻✨
Nice frames Sped! Might have to learn this one on the new 6-string.
Wouldn’t be a bad one to start with mate! And thanks bro, Tony Stark lent them me for the vid. 🤣🤣
Thank you. At last this is surely the most accurate and detailed representation and explanation of each note of this stunning lead break solo. Well done!
Wow, thank you! Glad it was helpful. 🤝🏻
This is so weird I was just thinking I need to learn the Stairway to heaven solo, thanks a bunch man!
Amazing, I read your mind. Or the algorithm did. Enjoy! ✨🙏🏻
You’re welcome. I’m so glad my teaching style resonates with you. However long it takes it’ll be worth it knowing you’ve got the right stuff down. 🙌🏻
About 5 minutes ago I was looking for a tutorial for the solo and this popped up on my recommendation page! I’m at 4:50 so far and I’m not disappointed!🎸🤘🎸🤘
The algorithm wins today. 🙏🏻🔥
@@SpedSpedding yup! 🎸🤘
Thanks Sped. This lesson was a massive game changer for me. Especially your explanation of timing and rhythm.
That’s awesome Ben. Happy to help. It’s that repetitive lick on the middle usually. It’s a bugger.
If you listen carefully to the record, you’ll hear Page slide down to the F note on the 4th string at the end of the minor pentatonic phrase in the first part of the solo - instead of playing it on the 8th fret on the 5th string 1:49.
Klugscheisser !!
@@SpedSpedding Not trying to be critical. Just pointing out an observation that I made that I believe I heard.
Oh not at all! I was just coming back with my side of things. I appreciate your comment and the time marker. Thanks for engaging. 🙌🏻
@@SpedSpedding Thanks, man.
Fantastic!
I managed to catch all the lines of this wonderful solo. Exceptional teaching! Congratulations!
Hugs from Brazil!
Great job, amazing to hear Roberto! Thanks for watching.
The only reason people hate this song is because after 50 years , they're just tired of it as a whole . And i do sympathize with the point .
But , there is NO denying this solo !!
It has it all in emotion, and just raw
WOW factor ,even after all the years since its conception , and i say "conception " as to all the dreams and hopes it birthed. Viva la Page!!!
(Edit) Sorry , that was a spectacular
lesson , and no way i can't sub.
- incredible !!!
Only took me about 40 years to finally nail the third lick in the solo. 😆 You break it down really well so I can finally hear it properly. Thanks!
That’s really cool. Thanks for learning with me.
Love, love, love!
🦉!!!!! Xxx
Excellent. It is hard to break down a long solo like this. You did a great job.
Great job! Unfortunately I don’t think Jimmy ever played it right once in any live performance I’ve seen.
He just goes for it live, throwing in a few of the famous licks. You can look at it two ways: “I’m sad I wanted to hear the exact solo” or “I got to see the man himself deliver something unique in a moment, just me and this crowd.”
Either way I’d treasure it.
This guy's an excellent player & teacher...great
Honestly, Jimmy was sloppy. But it was a tasty kind of sloppy.
1972…how the west was won…bout perfect to my ears…he experimented live, that he did
Luv ur teaching style, luv ur tone. I think you get the notes and timing right, no extra notes imagined, misheard or whatever. Keep up the Zep work, we just need to get your views up !
Thanks Phil! Working on them views, appreciate you stopping by to check out the vid. 🙏🏻
Excellent perfection it doesn’t go unnoticed I’ve watched this more than once Sped 🤓
Learned the stairway solo several months back from another UA-camr but never got the rhythm down to the sixth and eleventh lick but I finally got it down now thanks man
Glad you found this video then! That lick throws everybody off. Happy to help. 🙌🏻
After watching all the U-Tube Stairway solo turorials ------------ this one was the best to learn from. Not too fast ----------- not too slow & well explained. Great Job, great playing & Thanks --- wishing you the best.
Awesome, thank you! Glad it helped you out Bill!
A great video on one of the best solos
a moment to appreciate, slowing the song slightly, recording his own backing, probably uploading test videos to see if copyright detects it, tweaking til it doesn't, etc etc, so much work, much appreciated.
You’re welcome! So glad it all worked out and you enjoyed the video.
Dude, its amazing how i'm a begginer guitarist and thanks to your tutorial i'm learning one of my favourite solos of all time greetings from Argentina
That's SO cool, thanks for choosing to learn with me! 🇦🇷
Thanks for your lessons, and you have a beautiful LP Standard ❤
Yep... You got me on that F note. I never picked it up either. I just knew there was something I was missing there... for thirty damn years! I used to twist myself up on the 15th fret instead of going up to the 19th. Great video. Feels so much smoother to play,
Your execution have something different from other in the internet, your execution have soul, real nice, congratulations
Awesome Sped, you nailed it.👍🤙
Finally! Someone who has good ears and has figured it correctly (IMHO). Well done!
That's ace Paul, appreciate it.
brother i can not believe i have never seen you on you tube before you are awesome with teaching this solo. i seen it played different ways but urs makes the most sense you have got yourself a new subscriber and hope to see more of your teachings.
Thanks for hitting the button. Hope you are enjoying the videos. The algorithm literally hates me. Hahaha
I really like the no-nonsense style of teaching from you. Thanks a lot.
Straight to the point. IT'S AN F! Hahaha thanks.
Love your playing and love that high action. You are the best!
This is by far the best solo lesson i have ever seen. Love the way you explained some stuff with music theory
That’s wicked, thank you! 🙌🏻
Your dedication to playing these accurately is amazing.
Thank you Calum! I equate it to studying the exact text to get the most out of an author. You don’t learn a half arsed Shakespeare play do you?
Let’s study the real thing and then take that information away and use it to our advantage creatively. 🙌🏻
This video has taught me as much about my own guitar playing as it has this particular song for sure
Excellent Super....First the whole bend up on the G string on the 7th fret i hardly ever hear people put a tight tease to end it you did it and most just hold the note
I love your teaching !
Thank you! 😃
Thank you for explaining the rhythm pattern in that quick repeating section in the middle - finally unlocked that part for me!!
You’re welcome. It’s helped quite a few that!
Brilliant lesson
Thank you!
Best explanation of this amazing solo! Thanks
Happy to help!
Haha
Really great material! Instant sub
This is how all guitar lessons should be like, straight and direct to the point yet not failing to includes the little details and theory behind the solo
Thank you Kirsten! Really appreciate that, stoked that you chose to learn this with me. 🙌🏻
Beautifully done.
Hi Sped, I am a lifelong Page fan....love it all bro. YOU have nailed every solo, great job Bill
Loving the username! Haha. Thank you Bill, appreciate that.
Great stuff brother! You really tightened some stuff up for me on this!! Awesome!!!
That’s amazing, good luck with it. I hope you use what you’ve learnt going forward.
came up on my feed today. very well done. I haven't played the solo in years and this got me enthused. again, well done, and particularly the method and pace of the vid.
Thanks Chuck, amazing that it got you enthused. Looks like my pacing suits too which is killer. 🙏🏻
Simply amazing! The way you explain every bit of the solo in such patience and ease is fantastic! This is the best lesson of this solo by far! Liked and subscribed! Thank you very much, sir!
I’m loving this, thank you so much! Love that my teaching suits your tastes. Gonna be more Zeppelin stuff coming this month in honour. 🔥😏
This is a real good lesson of a real good solo we've ever had in.our lives....thanks so much for it.
nice job dude id say you nailed it
Thank you for this awesome tutorial Sped-, it is time for me to learn this ultra classic solo -and I appreciate your time- and this very accurate lesson! Thanks! 👍👍🎸🎸
My pleasure!
Great lesson video! Thank you for making this video!! 👍
My pleasure!
I started guitar lessons after hearing stairway to heaven for the first time ..and I feel all the Zep vital LPS got all of us wanting to play..thanks Sped you got me playing again you are the Zep master!!
I've been playing for over 22 years, and I'm currently about halfway through the solo (and can play it along with the song at 75% speed) so far. Thank you so much for breaking it down like this!
You're welcome Erik, that's so cool to here. And well done for taking the slow and steady approach. I always learn slow and then speed up.
Wow. Can’t believe how many people either want to tell you their life story or bring up some inconsequential fact (he KNOWS Jimmy played it on a Tele!!) in their comments.
I just want you to know that your posting this is tremendously kind and amazingly well done! No caveats or buts! 😂
Hope you’re doing well!!
Very very comprehensive instruction, I reference this repeatedly to develop and brush up my (limited) skills.
I am fairly new to playing guitar. Only started a year ago. I just finished learning my first solo. Its not perfect but I can play it. This will be my second. Thanks for making this video its exactly what I was looking for and great quality
You're so welcome Kyle, let me know how you get on with it!
Now it’s so much easier to play than I thought!
that tone in the demo!!!
This right here should be the only allowed guitar lesson
An amazing teacher! Thank you!
Happy to help!
the shirt . . . . it's the robert plant shirt knebworth era . . love these lessons . very very articulate , cohesive
