  • Phase Rotation on the Fluke 378 FC ⚡️
    This is an incredible feature to have in a clamp meter, as you’d typically need to spend hundreds of dollars on a separate meter if you wanted to be able to do this.

    *Correction. Phase to ground is above where I pointed. Line to line is on the bottom (where I pointed). Shocker (pun intended), I make mistakes and misspeak every now and again, though I’m aware of the difference.
    Thanks for watching! ⚡️🤘🏼⚡️

    I recently lost my 376 FC on a jobsite.
    I was looking for a replacement.
    That 378 model seems like what I need.

    Your meter says clock wise if you hook them up with L1 to T1, L2 to T2 &L3 to T3. Get it straight. I hope thats phase to phase voltage because a 480v. 3 phase circuit is phase to ground is 277v.

      Yeah it is phase to phase according to phone screen. I think it was just a messup when he said “phase to ground”

    You can tell this dudes an office guy. Clean gloves, clean phone and barely a scratch on that well preserved Fluke.
    ..but awesome that we don’t need a separate meter for phase rotation. Thanks for demoing.

      Pretty sure that meter is new, and even though I get down and dirty, I personally use fresh gloves every week since the company pays for them. But this guy here works for the union and in a hospital so it’s no wonder he would look pretty clean. Just some insight

    You should not need a smartphone for this nor should it be an option. This is complealy unessary to have an app for. These companys need to fuck off with this shit.

    • @JTPlayingTunes
      @JTPlayingTunes Місяць тому

      your meter can only display but so much info, the app is a monitoring and logging tool. its an added bonus. Why complain this is so useful lmao

    • @andersenlafont8066
      @andersenlafont8066 21 день тому +1

      I agree, the tool should do all of this without the need for an accessory device, there are scenarios where I can forsee wanting to use the direction detection and the logging and wouldn't be able (or wise) to have a phone out. Especially at $1000 price tag.

    • @Icytits
      @Icytits 20 днів тому

      @JTPlayingTunes because it's an LCD screen that can display whatever the fuck you want it to. It can already store and interpret information. If Fluke wants to stay as the top dog, they need to atleast do better than their competition

    I got this a week ago, I had like this feature until I realized It won’t help me with motor direction still. 😢, you can only tell which direction when power is on, you still need to look at physical direction and swap leads if incorrect,it only benefits if you can’t see motor, like a well pump

    I would love to have it. But it's just too damn expensive man. I mean it's on my wish list for sure, but unless a crackhead steals it for me. I don't think I'm going to get it

    Random question why was each phase reading 280ish but together they are 480 and not 570ish

    • @jsb7546
      @jsb7546 3 місяці тому +6

      It's a 277/480 volt three phase panel. This happens becuase of the way that the windings are out phase with eachother by 120 electrical degrees. The calculation used in three phase is 1.732 so 277 times 1.732 is 479.746 or essentially 480, especially considering the fact utilities can tend to run a little higher (or lower in some cases) in voltage so you can be anywhere plus or minus 5 percent of the 480v that your service is considered. In fact it used to be closer to 460v on average just like 120v used to be closer to 110v many years ago. In single phase its 120/240 because the winding are 180 degrees out of phase with eachother which gives us a multiplier of 2 so 120 times 2 is 240. Still learning more about this myself but that is my basic understanding of it.

    I think my fluke or any rotation meter is much faster, more accurate and all it costs to maintain it is a battery.

    • @MadElectrician
      @MadElectrician  3 місяці тому

      I’m sure that’s all true. I wouldn’t buy this solely for the phase rotation feature, but since it has it, I wouldn’t buy a separate phase rotation meter now. It does work great and is very quick to use when you’re not filming an explanation video about it.

    If that app's not completely local and open-source, why the hell would I buy this multimeter?

    • @MadElectrician
      @MadElectrician  3 місяці тому

      It’s free for this feature and other features that the meter does. The paid portion doesn’t limit functionality of the meter in any way. It’s for other things that Fluke does.

    • @chasemartin4450
      @chasemartin4450 3 місяці тому

      @@MadElectrician It may be "free" now, but Fluke can still steal my data and, more importantly, can shut down the app at any time rendering my investment in the tool useless (at least for features which depend on the app).
      Open-source software requiring no connectivity to third-party servers (or simply keeping these functions on the multimeter itself) is the only way to ensure that the tool will last as long as its hardware does and not be remotely deactivated when Fluke wants to sell me a newer model.
      *Maybe* this would be an acceptable feature for a budget multimeter only expected to last a few years, but for something in this price range it had better last several decades at minimum.
      (for those of you who think the idea of remotely deactivating someone's tools by exploiting closed-source, Internet-connected software required to use most of their features is some conspiracy theory which would never happen in the real world, take a look at the history of older Cricut vinyl cutters, where the manufacturer did *exactly* what I am describing here)

    Its not 1 to 2, 2 to 3, its right or left hand rotation, or counter clockwise or clockwise, its clockwise according to your meter :)

    • @MadElectrician
      @MadElectrician  3 місяці тому +1

      It’s technically both, just two different ways of saying the same thing. Most people do simply just say clockwise or counterclockwise. In the video I did put some text on the screen though that says “clockwise rotation.” ⚡️
