  • CARTOON EVOLUTION #16
To celebrate his 75th Anniversary, I take a look at the history and evolution of CASPER THE FRIENDLY GHOST, the kindly, spirited creation of animators Seymour Reit and Joe Oriolo
Sold to Famous Studios as a one-off character. A surprise instant sensation, Casper was the first major character to emerge from the studio, becoming a star of his own cartoons and comic book series, and face of a lucrative merchandise line.
Over the years, Casper has seen varying levels of fame, appearing on-and-off again in numerous cartoon series, including one produced by Hanna-Barbera, and five feature-length films - one produced by Steven Spielberg.
I take a look at how Casper has evolved from story to screen, discussing the most important changes in his design and personality and in the stylistic and narrative structures of his productions prevalent across 75 years of media.
Here's my look at Casper the Friendly Ghost through the years!

I'm surprised at how much Casper media I actually consumed. I used to watch that 90s film and the Haunted Christmas movie on repeat, Casper's Scare School aired all the time, I couldn't beat his PS2 game and I had a huge collection of his old shorts on those black market DVDs with cartoons in the public domain. He never really died off and he might have been enough of a stand-in to fit into any situation thrown his way.

By PS2 game (Its also on the GameCube.) You mean *_"Casper: Spirit Dimensions."_* Yeah I tried playing through that game myself back in the day and I didn't even knew how to get past any objective or how to properly play BEING a ghost until I received the big damaged existence erasure death thing (Sorry, Just how Casper can die if he's physiology dictates that he's already dead, No wait there are ways to truly kill a Ghost in fiction, Its just not that easy!) In that game shows Casper using his ghostly physiology in more offensive approaches while entering through different dimensions and still retain that good will by any chance would have been somewhat interesting I guess but it just did not work well on me from what I remember.
I've also had some experience with some Casper toons myself on Boomerang and yes Scare School (chuckles.) Being on of them on CN WAAAAY BACK WHEN. Including some DVD's from the dollar store I used to have called *_"Toon Factory."_* Don't know if you heard of it? The DVD also had Casper, Bugs Bunny, Popeye, Outside of the recognizable toons the DVD had Some Playdoh things (Not actually the title, I can't remember the name but it had to do with clay or stop motion if you can call it that.) And singing dwarfs that had separation between cherry and dreary with the dreary getting cured by...drinking some type of potion milk? I dunno, That's all I could remember in those CD's.

@Jason Bailey The antisemitism allegations have been repeatedly debunked
by many artists who worked for Walt with legendary storyman Joe Grant (who was Jewish himself) saying
"As far as I'm concerned, there was no evidence of anti-Semitism
I think the whole idea should be put to rest and buried deep. He was not anti-Semitic. Some of the most influential people at the Studio were Jewish. It's much ado about nothing. I never once had a problem with him in that way. That myth should be laid to rest."
And Kay Kamen who was the head of Disney’s merchandise department for over a decade (and was Jewish also) one quipped that the Disney Company "had more Jews in it than the Book of Leviticus."

It's surprising that they never did a crossover with Scooby Doo during the Hanna Barbera agreement. The monster of the week scaring Shaggy and Scooby, Casper accidentally scaring the monster and chasing after him to apologize while Fred, Wilma and Daphne try to catch Casper with traps that don't work on him, not realizing that he is a real ghost.
Thinking about it, Casper has lots of crossover potential, for example the Ghostbusters (Filmation's and the "Real" ones), Hotel Transilvania, The Addams Family...

Honestly, the most interesting version of Casper were the 3D animated films, because they actually gave him friends to interact with, a world that rejects the friendly monsters because they’re afraid that if they’re too nice, humans will be back to oppress them but if they become too violent, humans will be back to oppress them again. Casper rejects this ideology and he actually doubts himself before reaffirming his beliefs, and he becomes friendly towards humans, but he doesn’t force this change, he lets the humans and monsters actually slowly begin to tolerate each other.

Casper has been one of the nicest and sweetest Cartoon Characters around and I always tend to sympathize him, I wouldn't mind becoming Friends with the Friendly Ghost. 👻👻😃
My favorite Incarnations of Casper were the late 1940-1950's cartoons featuring the ghost and the 1995 film version. I also even happen to enjoy the direct-to-video films (Casper: A Spirited Beginning, Casper Meets Wendy, and Casper's Haunted Christmas) despite the CGI feeling dated compared to the 1995 version.
I'm optimistic that Universal and DreamWorks Animation will bring back Casper for a new film or animated series to a new Generation of Fans, and his appearances in the 2019 Geico Commercial and Harvey Street Kids were a start.
Thank you for the Cartooooooooon Evolution of Casper Dave and looking forward to his Voice Evolution this week. Lastly Happy Early Halloween. 👻🎃

I sympathize with him too. Here he is always trying to make friends but nearly every living thing screams and runs from him! Eventually there is an innocent child or animal takes pity on Casper and befriends him. However there was one Casper cartoon where I cried my eyes out because a little fox cub whom Casper befriended was killed. A hunter shot the fox cub! But it did end happy when the fox came back as a ghost himself.

I loved the first two direct-to-video movies as a kid, but I don't feel they hold up. Great for kids, not so much for adults. (Though I do wish they released the soundtrack for both of the movies, I do still enjoy the music lmao). While I've seen those two movies recently enough to know this, I'm unsure about the 95-movie-universe cartoon. I remember enjoying it when I was little, but I also have memories of it being "a little weird" but don't ask me what that means.
I've not seen anything after that, it didn't look appealing despite how much I loved Casper as a kid. It was absolutely the cheapness of the productions that put me off and I'd 100% be on board for new Casper material on par with that 95 movie. It's such a shame they didn't do a sequel back in the day.
Also I really should re-watch the original cartoons and the Angels series. I had all of them when I were little, but of course the 1980s/90s bumper videos didn't last for very long so I've not seen them in a very very long time.
Casper was on my 6th birthday cake and I remember being Very Excited about it xD

I think the reason why people get scared silly at seeing Casper in the cartoons is because to them all ghosts are scary. The other ghosts get their kicks out of being frightening and scaring the daylights out of the living. Casper is different from his ghostly brethren. All he wanted was to have friends. Unfortunately due to the scary reputation is the reason that living people and most animals are frightened at him.

I believe so too. In the comic books and movies he is residing with The Ghostly Trio. The 1995 film explained somewhat that both his parents had crossed over. I think part of what made Casper an endearing character is that underneath his fun, innocent exterior he is a bit of a tragic character and the eternal underdog; he is a ghost, which is the spiritual manifestation of someone who cannot rest in peace and stays on Earth in hope of fulfilling their mission. Casper is forever haunted (no pun intended) to be an immortal being in search of happiness but failing at it. Take the short where he befriends a fox; the fox is MURDERED and Casper is devastated by it. It has a happy ending in that the fox returns as a ghost and they remain friends, but tje fox was still dead. This was pushed harder in the 1995 movie where we learned that he had died tragically and wanted to rekindle his passion for life.
Hence why it's emotionally cathartic when Casper does make a friend, triumphs and defeats the odds because he is a spirit in one realm but his goals are in another. Casper to me represents our innocence and pure desire to just be happy despite adversity.
So he is a very simple, straight forward character that has some hidden layers to him that makes us sad, melancholic and root for him at the end

I know that some don't like him and find him boring but Casper has always been one of my favorite characters in a long time, I also hope we get a feature film reboot of the character and his fantastic friends in the near future. And they better include The Ghostly Trio lol, these jerks always cracked me up in the original movie.

I could picture this origin of the friendly ghost. Enemy planes flying over an English countryside, dropping bombs over an orphanage, one bomb striking a room, smashing all those baby bottles, causing those infants to cry and scream. One more bomb drops on their nursery, killing all those babies. Then all those infants begin floating upwards to heaven, but one baby was still crying but went silent as he dies, then he floats upwards from the ruins of the orphanage, IT'S CASPER!!!

Casper has starred in six television shows:
    Matty's Funday Funnies (1959-1961)
The New Casper Cartoon Show (1963-1970)
    Casper and the Angels (1979-1980)
    Casper and Friends (1991-1993)
The Spooktacular New Adventures of Casper (1996-1998)
    Casper's Scare School (2009-2012)
After Harvey bought the rights to Casper and many other Famous properties in 1959 (including Herman and Katnip, Little Audrey, and Baby Huey), they began broadcasting the post-September 1950 theatrical Famous shorts on a television show sponsored by Mattel Toys titled Matty's Funday Funnies on ABC in 1959 which introduced the Barbie doll to the public. The other Famous produced Casper cartoons had already been acquired by television distributor U.M. & M. TV Corporation in 1956. U.M. & M. retitled just "A Haunting We Will Go", but credited "Featuring Casper The Friendly Ghost" as "Featuring Casper's Friendly Ghost".
New cartoons were created for The New Casper Cartoon Show in 1963, also on ABC. The original Casper cartoons were syndicated under the title Harveytoons (initially repackaged as Casper and Company) in 1963 and ran continuously until the mid-90s. Casper has remained popular in reruns and merchandising.
Hanna-Barbera Productions also gave Casper two holiday specials, Casper's First Christmas (which also starred Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Snagglepuss, Quick Draw McGraw, Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy) and Casper's Halloween Special (aka Casper Saves Halloween), and also the Saturday morning cartoon series Casper and the Angels (an animated takeoff on two live-action hit shows Charlie's Angels and "CHiPS") in the autumn of 1979, all on NBC. Also featured on the NBC version was a big ghost named Hairy Scary (voiced by John Stephenson). None of Casper's original co-stars appeared in the show.
NBC featured it during Chip and Pepper's Cartoon Madness in fall 1991 to the summer of 1992.
In 1996, Amblin Entertainment and Universal Cartoon Studios created a new Casper series for Fox Kids called The Spooktacular New Adventures of Casper, based on the 1995 feature, that lasted two years and was never seen on television again after 1998. Two live-action direct-to-video follow-ups to the film, Casper: A Spirited Beginning and Casper Meets Wendy (which introduced Hilary Duff as fellow Harvey Comics character Wendy the Good Little Witch), were made. They were followed by Casper's Haunted Christmas (starring Spooky and Poil from the comics and animated spin-off of the first movie), and Casper's Scare School, which were done entirely in CGI with no live-action elements. These films are often referred to as being "prequels" to the 1995 feature despite the fact that they heartily contradict the feature and do not appear to even take place in the same universe.
In 2007, MoonScoop Group, in association with Classic Media, TF1 et DQ, produced a TV show of 52 X 12 named Casper's Scare School.
In 2020, Casper appeared in a supporting role in the "Scare Bud" episode of Harvey Girls Forever!, a series based on Harvey Comics characters.
