  • CARTOON EVOLUTION #8
To celebrate his 80th Anniversary, I take a look at the history and evolution of WOODY WOODPECKER, the zany, erratic and violent screwball star creation of Walter Lantz.
Initially debuting as a one-off character in Lantz’s Andy Panda series, Woody quickly became his most popular character ever - eclipsing the fame of Andy in a matter of years and eventually starring in 200 classic shorts. Through a series of studio setbacks and budgetary problems, Lantz survived as the final American animator producing cartoons for theatrical release - and Woody the final leading character starring in them - outliving the likes of Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny. Despite this, Woody struggled through a rapidly watered-down climate, eventually becoming a shell of the character he once was.
I take a look at how Woody has evolved, discussing the most important changes in his design and personality and in the stylistic and narrative structures of his productions prevalent across 80 years of media - and additionally delve into the history of Walter Lantz and how he strove to survive in an industry dominated by the likes of Walt Disney and Warner Bros Animation.
Here's my look at Woody Woodpecker through the years!

I was an animator on the 2018 Woody Woodpecker shorts, it was my first animation gig. My favorite look for Woody is definitely his 1940's look and his 1990's from the New Woody Woodpecker Show. Once I landed the job, I re watched so much old Woody and drew him for weeks to prepare and hype myself.

Woody and Felix definitely need a comeback and need to be revitalized in a slapstick type of way, but that respects their roots like for Woody his 40's self and for Felix his 30's and 40's versions.
And they NEED someone who actually cares about these characters, that's the reason why we got Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain thanks to Steven Spielberg and his love for cartoons and of course the film he worked on Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

As with the Looney Tunes cartoons, I feel the 1940s and early 1950s cartoons tended to be the best in the Woody Woodpecker series. It really was a great era for theatrical cartoons.
I always found it fascinating that Woody managed to outlast the other major cartoons for so long, despite years of releasing mediocre cartoons that weren’t showing much profit. Hey, got to give Lantz credit for trying to salvage his character for so long.
I actually quite liked the 1990s series, even if it somewhat watered down. I always thought it was one of the better post-Golden age adaptations of a Golden age cartoon series. Not fond of the flash cartoons, though.
On a side note, I never expected to see a W.C. Fields reference in a video on Woody Woodpecker. It was cool of you to show many of the old live-action comedies.

kristian rikardsen The early Mickey cartoons and the comic strips were pretty fun, though, yes, he did get blander as the years went along. Agree about the new show; that and Mickey Mouse Works seem to be the two shows that have made the best use of him since the 1940s.

I’d have to argue that the Colhaan ones were the best in terms of overall enjoyment, woody was extremely violent, but lovable, not watered down like Mickey Mouse, the art style was nice, the camera work was excellent. And I wonder how woody would have been had colhaan continued to work on them,I’d bet woody would still be popular by 1975,and maybe even be releasing cartoons today.

It is so weird how in Brazil, despite some loving Mickey and Bugs, Woody popularity is way much massive, probably a cartoon icon in the whole country compared to Mickey and Bugs. This is probably due how Brazil been a poor country, Bugs and Mickey only had shows in paid channels, while Woody was released in multiple free open channels and it was one of the few cartoons shown, and unlike other shows who got massive popularity, the universal comedy in Woody is something everyone likes it, no matter the incarnation, if its the crazy original one, the dreamer cute or the "post modern" house owner from the 90's. The jokes from Brazilian dub are also deep in meme culture, which it trully never died after more than 12 years since Brazilian internet grown.
It is trully amazing how a somewhat forgetable character in US is like a national icon in Brazil, and I was shocked to know that the movie was made just for the Brazil audiences and release on theaters only here holy shit. The "childish humour" actually fits perfectly for the massive modern audience in the country, which is why despite been a bad movie it made success.
And the funniest part: His name here is just Woodpecker, no one knows his actual name is Woody lmao

Like...Woody's _always_ been an asshole. Heck more than a few times, he's bordered on being a straight up _villain._ That was kinda the point: We were supposed to get a laugh out of him making people suffer. That said, it does sound like the live action film took it too far--pretty sure Woody never stooped so low as to attempt literal murder (barring Pantry Panic, but that was because he was starving and desperate for food). That was Buzz Buzzard's thing.

Dave!! You really dug up the facts on this video! Being a voice actor myself, I’ve worked in studios all over Hollywood. When my Voice Acting Coach, Daws Butler (who performed literally DOZENS of voices for every studio in town, including Huckleberry Hound - who you see briefly in this video, albeit in black and white, even though his TV show was produced in COLOR - Daws was the voice of Chilly Willy, during the rather short time the character spoke), his dialogue was recorded at the Walter Lantz Studio on the corner of Seward and Willoughby in Hollywood, and not on the Universal Studios lot. Some years later, I was the voice of ESPN’s Muscle Magazine. Most of those episodes were recorded AT THAT SAME FORMER WALTER LANTZ STUDIO! Sadly, by then, Daws had passed away. He would have gotten a real kick out of THAT! By the way, Shamus Culhane was BRILLIANT! And it’s NOT “copywritten”, in that it has NOTHING to do with writing. It’s about RIGHTS. So the word is “COPYRIGHTED”. I don’t know about you, but I find it interesting that the only two actual live people who hosted TV shows featuring their cartoons were both named Walter - Walter Elias Disney, and Walter Lantz.

My favorite Woody design is his 1970s design!
I’ll describe it in one word: ADORABLE.
I think Woody should appear as a core cartoon character like Mickey and Bugs!
    Woody Woodpecker Short Ideas:
    Woody’s 80th Birthday Spectacular!
Plot: Woody and his buddies celebrate his 80th birthday by mashing up moments from his most iconic cartoons!
Design: Woody is rocking his 70s design.
Fun Facts for this Idea: Chilly Willy the Penguin does speak in this HOUR LONG special!
    Woody and Chilly’s Dance Party
Plot: Woody and Chilly Willy throw a dance party for the gang! Miss Meany and Wally Walrus try to destroy the party, but Woody and Chilly team up and stop them.
Designs: Chilly is in his 90s design while Woody dons his 2017 look. Miss Meany and Wally Walrus don their 1972 and 1990s looks respectively.
    Woody the Musical
Plot: Woody re-enacts “Hamilton” in his own way.
Design: Woody goes full on Throwback Thursday with his 1940s look.
Correction: The New Woody Woodpecker Show lasted for 4 seasons, not 3.

I really appreciate all the effort, patience and love you put in your videos, mainly, this Cartoon Evolution series. I grow up watching Woody Woodpecker, the late 90's version, which it's awesome in my opinion. Few months ago, I watched the late 90's version in english and I just can say that the lowest point was the characters' voices which were so rigid, mainly, Wally Walrus who sounded so bored, without emotion in his voice. BUT, the latin american dubbing was AMAZING, all the voices fit so great in the characters' personalities and their voices reflected their feelings, moods and body language. For that, I think it was successful in Latin America plus to the pretty good animation and interesting funny stories.
I agree with you, I think the animation industry should let Woody rest a little time and trying to think in more new ideas for the new generations because the animation is so dynamic and the joy and jokes we really loved in the past, it didn't make laugh to children anymore.
Again, thanks a lot for your effort! I really love your channel and I'm so excited about the new content!🥰👏

And Woody skiing out to Swiss Chard Lodge, Wally Walrus, Proprietor, while singing "The Sleigh" by Richard Kountz (with a touch of "Orchi Chornya" on the way). Wally could be as violent as Woody, and sometimes came out on top -- unusual for a cartoon heavy!

It might be surprising, but I find Woody from that live action disaster of a movie... actually charming. I learnt about the movie only yesterday, found it and watched it in one go. Not going to defend it, but definitely want to mention that Woddy himself was the best part of it for me. At least, visually. He's cute, entertaining, lively, and the fact that they added a topic of loneliness to his character was actually a good thing to me. They also did have an interesting idea of Woody being a re-incarnation of some god of chaos and mischief, the idea that could actually use its own movie. But regardless, I liked those things.

I've watched most of these cartoons when I was a kid. I kinda saw him as the bird-version of Garfield, with his ridiculous appetite that came around later. My favorite woody appearance would be from the forties, specifically 1944 one from the barber Seville short. It seems like Disney and Warner Bros. were the kings of animation at the time, and everyone was trying to outdo them. I feel this great character was ruined due to all the violence censorship and making him so adorable. I know because of the childrens' audience, they'd have to do so, but if there wasn't any blood, language or horrific scenes, I think it would've been fine for kids like 8+. People should've hounded shows like Ren and Stimpy and Catdog, that deserved to be extremely censored. My least favorite animations styles would be from the 80s and 2000s. The 90s animation was pretty good. Since other attempts to revive him have failed, it may be best to just put Woody Woodpecker to rest and remember his best moments of animation. Another great installment Dave. Please keep making these wonderful ad educational videos.

The 1947 through the 60's were the ones I grew up with. As a kid I preferred the softer and as you say 'watered down' version as well as hearing Grace's voice of Woody. The gentler tone gave a more warming approach of the character as well as handful of chuckles.
I still enjoyed Woody's earlier wackiness. Similar as to how I always preferred the wackier Daffy Duck. However I realized after watching the earliest episodes (aside from Picnic Panty, which was on every single cartoon collection in the sales bin), a lot of the content was a tad dark and the violence would of definitely not fly in current times.
My mom was fond of the behind the scenes area in the 50's. She would always tell me about how Lantz showed how to draw Woody and that the voice of Woody was his wife, etc.
Despite being only 10 at the time of the 1999 version, I simply couldn't stand it. I had to beg mom not to record it to vhs. Really couldn't handle the changes they did to Chilly Willy and characters around him either.
Unless someone can find the right balance for him, I don't know how Woody Woodpecker can become a fad again in the US.

I grew up in the 60s watching Mighty Mouse and Heckle and Jeckle, and Depty Dawg. Disney tried to license them for inclusion in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, but getting the rights turned out to be too slow for them to make the deadline. They are not meant as insults to anyone. The problem today is that our politicians are constantly looking to make everything a "racial" issue in order to promote hatred. And stupid people today are so "sensitive" and easily offended. They need to grow up and stop whining. If they want to be "politically correct", that's their business, but the rest of us just laugh at them. If we can't laugh at ourselves, who can we laugh at?
