    Everyone knows who Super Mario Bros. are. These two brothers named Mario Mario and Luigi Mario are probably the two most popular video game characters ever. We've all played countless different games with them on various Nintendo and Gameboy systems. But it's surprising how so many fans pronounce the name "Mario" differently. Not even Charles Martinet, Chris Pratt, Bob Hoskins and Lou Albano can all agree how to pronounce it. Even characters Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Yoshi, Toad, Bowser and Wario say it differently. If every fan claims that their pronunciation is right, then what's the best way to check which way is really correct? I say: Go to the place where the character comes from and ask how it's said there. But where exactly is that? Well, it has been made clear that these plumber brothers are Italian-Americans from Brooklyn, New York. Although it's never officially clarified which Brooklyn neighborhood Mario and Luigi are from, my logic says they're most likely either from Bensonhurst or Dyker Heights (the neighborhoods that had the largest Italian-American populations in Brooklyn during the 1980s when these characters were first created). Therefore, I went to these very neighborhoods and asked all the Italian-American merchants there willing to speak to me how they pronounce it. Some viewers might say that as an alternative to Bensonhurst and Dyker Heights, I could have gone to other Brooklyn Italian neighborhoods (Bay Ridge, Gravesend, Bath Beach, Mill Basin, Bergen Beach, Canarsie, Marine Park, Sheepshead Bay, Williamsburg, Red Hook, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, etc), or other people might say I could have gone to Mulberry Street of Manhattan's Little Italy, Arthur Avenue of the Bronx's Little Italy, countless other Italian neighborhoods in NY, and all across the USA. And many other people will say I could have gone anywhere in Italy itself. But I believe that going to the neighborhoods which Mario most likely would have grown up in - if he was a real person - was the way to go. Now let's listen to how these Brooklyn Italians say Mario!

    Cool video! As an Italian speaker, it's pronounced "Mah-ree-oh". Any differentiations are a result of the New York/Jersey diphthong.

    This is eerie, I grew up in Dyker and Bensonhurst and you showed so many of the key businesses just a block or two from where I grew up, it’s heart warming seeing all these places in a public forum like this. I can vouch that growing up I never heard ANYONE pronounce it Mah-rio, everyone said Marry-o, including people NAMED Mario. The only time I heard Mah-rio was on tv and it sounded so artificial. What you say about the neighborhoods is true, especially Bensonhurst, it was exclusively Italian in my parents’ generation, strongly Italian when I was a kid, and majority Chinese with some Italian stalwarts by time I moved away a few years ago. I hope you got some good food during your visit!

      Thank you so much! That really means a lot to me. When I made this video, I was trying to do two things simultaneously: show how Italians pronounce the name Mario, and also document these neighborhoods in the year 2023. So to hear someone from Bensonhurst say that I documented the neighborhood accurately here, is quite a compliment. Thank you very much. And please feel free to share this video with any of your friends and family from the neighborhood. I'd love to read their comments on the video as well.

    Well done! In the Midwest people sent to say it similar to the Italian version, Ma-rio like in Mark. The Brits have their own pronunciation where they say Merry-o. this one British UA-camr, even put together a whole video with a fellow British apologist linguist to validate the pronunciation. Facepalm the whole time.

    This debate is easily settled by learning that the name is a gender bent version of Mary. Many Italians are Catholic and the name Mary is very popular (or was), and so the created a male equivalent for their sons. My wife is an italian from Long Island and she says it "Mary-oh"

    • @Joelikesmoviesnstuff
      @Joelikesmoviesnstuff  8 місяців тому +1

      The name Mario is not a gender bent version of Mary - but a gender bent version of Maria. Yes, I realize that Maria is the Italian translation of Mary. But that doesn't mean the two names are meant to be pronounced the same... I've heard many Italians pronounce it "marry-oh" (including Italians who are NAMED Mario), but I've never heard anyone pronounce it "mary-oh" before.
