SCAG V Ride 2 36" & WRIGHT Stander I 36" ► Extreme Tests Mowing Overgrown Grass

  • Most of you guys have seen already the Ferris and Bobcat reviews, as well as a cool walk through of the Wright mowers in this video series Stan and I are doing. Today we are covering the Wright Intensity 36" mower and the SCAG V Ride 2 36" lawn mowers.
    If you guys are just tuning in, Stanley Dirt Monkey and myself flew down to Baltimore area to hang with Ed Wright of Wright manufacturing to bring you an epic mower series comparing the pro's and con's of all the different stand on lawn mowers out today. Ed actually invested in buying them all for their company to learn from the competition, and help them create a better value and quality machine.
    Most of you guys have to tackle properties with gated back yards and smaller areas to maneuver into, and that's where mowers like these really shine. Additionally, these are great starter mowers because you can always still do larger areas and yards, before you have the funds to invest in a second unit, which may be a 52" or 60" for your business.
    Starting with a smaller mower like this may be a great option, as you can always go big later, but it's tough to start big and miss out on all those smaller yards when you're just getting started.
    We didn't have access to the smaller Gravely or Exmark for this "class", but those brands also make great smaller back yard/gated mowers. There are a few new ones also coming to market this year, so hopefully we can get our hands on those and compare them in 2019.
    What do you guys think about the Wright Stander Intensity, and the SCAG V Ride 2 36"? Do you guys currently run them? What other mowers are your guys' go to for gated back yards and tighter working spaces? Comment down below!

    So what do you guys think about the compact mowers and the ability to expand your fleet as you go with larger deck sizes and units. I have to say, these 2 mowers were insanely beefy. Doubt you could go wrong with either one.

    prime example of whats wrong with the lawn care industry today...you go out and buy a 36" to fit in the gates for 6-7k$ and then have a 48 or 52" for your larger mows at 8-9k$ then the trailer 3K$ and you run around mowing 30$ lawns !! The lawn price per cut today is the same as it was 25 years ago but the prices of equipment is sky rocketing !!

    • @BriansLawnMaintenance
      @BriansLawnMaintenance  5 років тому +13

      I've talked about that before, I couldn't agree more. That's why I've dropped my gated lawns, I couldn't justify having a $1,500 Exmark Metro sit around 95% of the week on the trailer, rusting out. Every market is different, I get it but for me, I pruned those clients to keep my bigger units moving. But again, not everyone has wide open properties and subdivisions/acreage.

      It gets worse. I lived in FL and paid my yard guy $50/month to cut edge and trim done weekly. And that was the standard rate. I always told him to charge more but he said he couldn't because he'd lose business.

    When it comes to cutting performance from what I saw there, you went over the grass three times and plenty of the taller grass stems never came down. My neighbor just bought a 6’ bush hog for his 4045 JD tractor. I was truly impressed at the near perfect cut. We have had a spell of rain here in Florida and its is growing fast. I mow 3 out of 5 acres. I have two 46” yard machines. JD and CC. They just do not hold up. Today, on the John Deere site, I noticed a happy guy mentioning his great impression with Bradley. They have a nice offering. Dealers are all two hours away. John Deere is usually 30 minutes with good inventory of parts. Thanks for your reviews! Am I expecting too much when it comes to really cutting long grass on the first pass?

  • @cadamczak6856
    @cadamczak6856 5 років тому +5

    I see the scag mower demoed had the lower horsepower engine ~15 HP versus the 19 HP with the electric start. The recommendation I got from the dealer was to go with the larger engine as while the smaller engine with the recoil starter is cheaper to purchase, you will be dissatisfied with the mower performance. A 25% reduction in power is a big deal. And as an older consumer with a wife who wants to use the mower to do the lawn and garden, a recoil starter on such a high machine for me would be a very stupid choice. She told me don’t be a stupid @$$@/// , you are buying a commercial grade machine, not a no name knockoff, an electric starter with adequate power is a baseline requirement, not a luxury.

    very disappointed in the bias view i saw on Dirtmonkeys channel last night, not from you or him, but from Ed..You can clearly see that Ed nit picked the ferris much more than anything else, probably because he knows the Ferris is just as good as his machine, at a lower pricepoint, sometimes a MUCH lower price point, i found a Z2 52" with oil guard for $7200 OTD, also i feel like Wright seriously just gave up when it comes to the knee pad, i mean really, its the most uncomfortable one out there.

    I bought my 36" Scag VRideII during the middle of the season last year. It has been a gamechanger for me. I bought it used with 1.8 hrs on it! It was the pull start, but it was such a deal I couldn't pass it up. You get used to it after a while. I have several small yards where it's all I use. But there's also 1 or 2 I have that have severe uneven terrain, and it's Bermuda. This narrower cut made the yard look so much better despite the fact i could first my larger Turf Tigers on it. It delivers a very good cut and doesn't clog. Absolutely love it! Also, the cc's are rated the same on the 15hp pull start and the 19hp electric start. The main difference between the 2 engines is the electric start obviously and the air filtration system. Aside from that, they're virtually identical

Need to compare Apple to Apples I love my Scag but if the Wright dealer was closer I'd probably be using one of those. I don't think there is that much difference between any of the commercial mowers. One difference I like about my Scag is the motor is NOT mounted to the mower deck . I don't have to lift that motor up and down everytime I set the deck.

    People pulling the trigger and debating on the size of their first mower to purchase, you have to think about what type of customers do you want to target or what type of yards the majority of your targeted area have for you to make a good fit to that market. Me, I am a solo, side business, so I can pick & choose my clients a little bit more. That is why I went with a 50" for my first yard, if they don't have a big enough gate, so sorry, as I move on to customers that do. If you are going on in fulltime, then like Stan said, you may want to start with a 36" to gain all the potential customers and then bump up to a bigger unit on your next additional mower purchase. This way you aren't turning away too many customers. Your bigger mowers are going to handle a yard quicker thus making you more $s per hour in general (the 48"-52" range will be more profitable than a 36"), if you can establish enough clientele of this sort on your start-up year?---I hope this added some prospective for someone getting ready to pull the trigger.***Other add-ons that are worth the purchase to get or plan to get on that first mower: 1) bagging system for those Fall leaf cleanups 2) chute-blocker for those thinner strips of property between the neighbors yard and your client's flowerbed along side their house/garage 3)headlights for the Fall season when it starts getting dark early 4) PTO assist for your bagger tube to avoid the tube getting clogged. You may not be able to get all of these add-ons right away, but if you purchase a mower that has these options available, you can get these items over time as the money rolls in.

    When I landscaped, we used Wright Standers. We had 2 60" for high weed mowing, a few 54" that were our main mowers on the trucks, then I eventually got a 36" since I had a lot of gated back lawns. The thing was solid, mowed well, was a little faster then the 54" due to being lighter so it almost made up for the size difference. The only place I really feel it lacked was holding a hill. It would lose traction way easier then the larger decked heavier standers.

    We are in louisville and the most popular is the exmark 30. Looks like a push mower but very versatile self propelled mulching machine with bagging or full discharge option. On the heavier side the 32 inch metro exmark has been our go to. The 36 inch will not fit in all gates the 32 will so the decision was simple. The accounts are not popular for this need in terms of residential, however commercial islands and the smaller spots needed on your bigger grounds (if that makes sence).

    My personal experience, I think the wright handles the best as far as stand on mowers go and are built very strong, however I have to choose the scag v ride 2 over the wrights any day. From where I am in the northeast, we cut thick wet grass a lot and I found with the wrights my deck would require a lot of scraping and grass would be clumped up badly after a single cut in morning dew. Also, I noticed that it would drop little clumps of grass all over the lawn when it was wet and I’d have to double or triple cut always. When I got the v ride and v ride 2s, I have had no issues cutting in any wet grass, and although all mowers will leave grass piles of grass in wet thick conditions, the scag did a much better job with dispersing the clippings evenly so if you did need to double cut, it wouldn’t be a problem because there were no clumps of wet grass. This is just my opinion through my experience, I think wright may be the better overall mower, but the decks on wrights are by far the weak point when comparing them to others like the velocity plus etc.

    I'm just starting out right now and I have better quality trimmers/blowers than my actual mower (my mower is a $3,000 hustler raptor which is more of a homeowner type deal, looking to upgrade soon though.) But with all of these pieces of equipment there's the fact that no matter what happens, one day you're gonna turn that key or pull that cord and the dam thing is not going to start. It's up to you when that day is going to be, and part of that is on what brand you buy (some are just better than others end of story) but I'd argue that most of that falls on YOU, how well you take care of your equipment. Most people don't realize that to keep a piece of equipment running correctly costs extra man hours (even simply blowing the grass out of the deck and sprockets can double the life of your mower deck) and not to mention money. To run a commercial mower for one season is going to cost around $500 minimum (I'm shooting fairly low tbh) on parts you need to be replacing every year or every few weeks in some cases (air filter, fuel filter, blades etc.) and that doesn't include fuel or the finance cost. Tl;Dr: you can buy a $40,000 lawn mower but it'll be junk in less than 2 or 3 years if you don't take care of it.

    I agree with Brian and DM that these size mowers are excellent to start out with, but newbies also need to understand that they have a bigger learning curve to these smaller mowers in regards to 2 very important things; 1:The safety aspect that they are not nearly as stable as a wider mower and; 2: They weigh almost just as much as their larger counterparts, and with smaller tires, they get hung up easier.
