- This year had many movies that fell short of what I hoped while many I enjoyed far more than I anticipated. Here are my biggest surprises and disappointments at the movies in 2023.

Unrelated to this video, but i gotta just say that I love how brutally honest you are. You don't sugar coat things and you say it like it is. Especially when Chucky S2 and Halloween Ends came out
Thanks. I don’t see the point in not being bluntly honest.
@@CodyLeachYTHalloween Ends is the worst Halloween film (imo)
@@CodyLeachYT That's why you're one of the best Horror channels on UA-cam. 2024 is gonna be wild haha
yea if u watch halloween 5 before ends ur weird@@skeletxnncuh
@@skeletxnncuh it’s one of the best Halloween films (imo)
Scream 6 would have been my favourite scream movie if it wasn’t for the last 30 minutes which made me extremely disappointed.
Scream 6 had no tension whatsoever because of the crazy amounts of plot armour. People got absolutely messed up only to survive, and that just ruined the whole thing
The Iron Claw was my most surprising film of the year. Such a devastating and emotionally resonate film that ultimately touched me on another level
I’m with you on Scream VI. I was fully convinced it’d be in my top 3 Scream movies until those last 20 minutes or so. Not that they’re particularly grounded movies (aside from the first) as the franchise went on, but it just got SO goofy in a way that was jarring as hell. It dove headfirst into campy territory and it didn’t fit.
Couldn't agree more.
Agreed. Botched ending as usual with the franchise
@@Skeletal33 Hadn't thought about it much, but you're right! Most of the Scream movies DO have botchy endings! Gave you a like.
The meta stuff in Scream was clever early on but the meta stuff in the later films comes off as "Aren't we smart for pointing these horror clichés out?"
Cody leach has been the best film reviewer of 2023. Let’s keep the streak going! Bring on 2024!
Scream 6 was good until the third act happened and that’s when everything fell apart
“Threw the TV out of the window to land on logic” 🤣 love it!
I’m a MASSIVE Godzilla fanatic so the atomic breath scene was a big crowd pleasing moment for me personally lmao 😂
All of the atomic breath scenes are amazing. The when he blasts the MUTO down through its mouth is my favorite still.
With you on the Scream VI take, the reveal was definitely not the one. I was hoping VII could have rectified it, but we can't have (potentially) nice things.
sheeesh Cobwebarbeniemer was a elite weekend for flicks 🕸💅🏾💣
That's a very nice story about you and your daughter bonding over a movie ❤
Gotta say, you've become one of my all time favourite movie reviewers i watch. Maybe next year make the list of dissapointing and surprising movies, be interspliced, so you get one pick of dissapointing, and then one of the surprising ones, so the video has a better reason to be one video, instead of two different shorter ones? otherwise keep up the great work Cody!
Hey Cody, I’ve been watching you for 3 years now, and you have become my favorite movie related channel. Keep up the great work and happy new year!
Also a cool fact is we have the same birthday😎
Top 5 Biggest Disappointments:
5. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania-Despite this movie not really having much to do the overall MCU anymore, for the introduction of Kang the Conqueror, I found this movie to be pretty disappointing
4. The Creator-To be very clear, I’m positive on this film, but for how much it was being hyped up for being an original sci-fi epic, this movie certainly let me down as it was essentially a bunch of elements of previous sci-fi projects thrown together to make The Creator
3. Napoleon-On technical levels, this is a well made movie, which made for a decent movie but when it came to the story, characters, and themes, there wasn’t an actual exploration of who Napoleon Bonaparte was, which was rather disappointing
2. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny-While it’s a good enough closure to the Indiana Jones franchise and character, it lacks the classic movie making of what makes the original trilogy special, and takes Indy to emotional places I think I could’ve done without
1. The Flash-Despite enjoying this movie both times I watched it in theaters, this movie has aged rather poorly for me because of how it executes multiple of its ideas, its terrible CGI, the way the story plays out, and especially how hollow Barry’s journey is by the time the movie wraps up
Top 6 Biggest Surprises:
6. Air-Because I don’t care about sports or shoes whatsoever, I was expecting this movie to be solid, but now one that would stick with me much, but I love this movie and it’s easily one of my favorites of the year
5. John Wick: Chapter 4-Because I wasn’t the biggest fan of John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, I wasn’t super hyped for this one, but that definitely changed once I saw the awesomeness of this film
4. Oppenheimer-Because I wasn’t interested in the subject matter of this film at first, I thought this would’ve been a film I would’ve respected more than I enjoyed, but this one ended up in my Top 3 Favorites of 2023
3. BlackBerry-An exploration of human relationships and the fear of being irrelevant, and while I never would’ve thought of that, that’s so much of the magic of movies
2. Godzilla Minus One-I wasn’t really planning on seeing this one in theaters, but when I saw it as soon as the early buzz came out, I went to see it that night, and though it was pretty great
1. Saw X-I wouldn’t have ever thought that the tenth film in a nineteen year old horror franchise would be my favorite film in that franchise, my favorite horror film of 2023, my biggest surprise of 2023, or a spot in my Top 10 Movies of 2023, but that’s what happened
I feel like scream 6 is great for the first 3/4’s. That cancels out not sticking the landing
Most Surprising Films of 2023:
1. Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
2. Blue Beetle
3. No Hard Feelings
4. Knock at the Cabin
5. A Haunting in Venice
6. Gran Turismo
7. Infinity Pool
8. Mother, May I?
9. The Super Mario Bros. Movie
10. The Passenger
Most Disappointing Films of 2023:
1. Scream VI
2. Anyone But You
3. Ant-man and the Wasp: Quantamania
4. Silent Night
5. Haunted Mansion
6. Five Nights at Freddy’s
@@mariosonicfan1494I thought it was fine at best. It’s a 3/5 film for me. Thought they wasted Matthew Lillard
Happy new year to you and your family Cody!!🎉❤ you’re awesome bro keep rockin! You make people’s days better every day we luv ya!
Biggest surprises for me were CREED 3, GODZILLA Minus One, Super Mario Bros Movie, and V/H/S/85 and SAW X
I'm genuinely curious about your thoughts on VHS 85. I personally didn't think much of it but love hearing others opinions.
Saw X was surprising and disappointing to me
@@sirdropbeartvI actually enjoyed in this one more than just one or two segments for a change which is refreshing for this series and I loved how it actually felt like you were watching a vhs tape with the ratio and the 80s setting was nice. In these V/H/S films they will usually have either one or two good segments but bad wrap arounds. 85’s wrap around actually felt enjoyable especially considering since it was done by the guy who did the Amateur Night short and the HELLRAISER reboot, I loved how the wrap around felt different and the alien reveal really freaked me out. The other segments that stand out are No Wake/Ambrosia combined and God Of Death and easily the BEST one of the film was no doubt Scott Derrickson’s segment. ONLY segment I hated was TKNOGD in this film. If I had to say my favourite V/H/S films, it’s 85 and 2
thank you for taking the time to respond, very interesting feedback. im with you on VHS 2 being a favorite
@@dong.corleone
Saw only 10 movies in 2023
Most surprising for me:
#3 Fast X
#2 TMNT Mayhem
#1 Dungeons and Dragons
Most dissapointing for me:
#2 Blue Beetle
#1 Rise of the Beast
I loved Scream VI. It did so much that I loved that it became my favorite Scream film and one of my favorite films of the year. It’s definitely #4 within my Top 5.
🤮🤮🤮
Scream 6 had limited potential from the start after 5, and they dropped the ball so hard. The killers were so predictable but the reveal was so contrived. Then the motive was almost vomit inducing. Great, the family of the most forgettable and inconsequential killer, Richie from Scream 5. Yay... ugh. Just ugh.
Scream 6 is basically my favorite sequel of all, it almost edged out the first one if wasn't for the lame dogshit final act and the killer revelation, which sucked
nothing about scream 6 is better than scream 1996@@DodoRibeiro-ts6po
Happy New Year, Cody!🎉
Yes, forgettable expirience is worse than negative one. At least in my book. Art is about emotions (amoung other things) and if I feel nothing or forgeting movie\book\game in a day of few - this is bad.
Just went to Jagged Edge Productions studio. Instead of chairs they have baby cribs with planets hanging above their head
My top 3 of 2023.
1st: Saw X - Amazing to see In theaters and definitely the best Saw film.
2nd: Scream 6 - As a Scream fan I thought it was awesome.
3rd: Gran Turismo - Another amazing watch in theaters.
I also really dig the sorta kinda switch up in how many movies to discuss. Kinda digging it, kinda digging it, kinda digging it, nice change of pace.
Yes! Cobweb so great because it was just a very straight forward scary movie.
So true about Scream 6, it was very solid until the last 30 minutes...and some of the plot armor for some of the side characters was ridiculous
So glad I found your channel. I found this channel back when the newest Season of dexter came out. Been hooked ever since. Atleast I came away with something good out of that last season of dexter lol
It makes you wonder, with all the CGI, AI, de aging, etc. How often do they actually NEED the actors/stunt doubles physically present?
I used to think it took 1-2 years to fully shoot a movie. But here recently, I learned it only takes like 3-6 months. That being said though, how much of it is CGI were seeing in the 3+ hour movies instead of the actual actors
Best “future guy goes back in time movie” is OUTLANDER. future guy using his future tech mixed with Viking weapons to fight a monster he brought back with him on his ship. Underrated and amazing.
Disappointments:
1) Indiana Jones 5
2) Scream VI
3) The Killer
4) Insidious: The Red Door
5) 65
6) Silent Night
Surprises:
1) Saw X
2) Godzilla -1
3) Gran Turismo
4) Elemental
5) D&D: Honor Among Thieves
6) Cobweb
So glad you touched on Gran Turismo and Cobweb. Such surprises this year for me too. I recommend both hard-core to my casual movie friends and now all I get are more requests for recommendations lol.
Scream VI is the only scream movie I can call bad
Just back from the ER. Couldn’t miss this gem.
Happy New Year! Let’s hope that this year will be a better year for movies bc last year, 😬. Thought it was going to go up in the back half but nope
I agree, Dungeons & Dragons surprised the hell out of me! It was well written and had some moments where I genuinely LOL'd... good shit
Biggest surprises for me are Gran Turismo, M3agan, Talk To Me and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles : Mutant Mayhem. Biggest disappointments are Five Nights At Freddy’s and Shazam! Fury Of The Gods
Cannot agree more on Scream 6
Cody I thought 💯 that you were going to say "John Wick 4" as your number 1 favorite of the year.
This isn’t my top 10 Best
I enjoyed Scream 6 my only disappointment was the reveal of the cop as the killer it didn't work for me
Plus he got the chance to blow Sam's head with his handgun instead he ram charges at her... WTF
When I watched Scream 6, I thought it was awsome, better than Scream 5. But with time I changed my mind. Now I think 5 is better and is a more interesting movie if we consider the franchise as a whole, while 6 feels more disposible. One thing that I still give Scream 6 credit for is how non-formulaic it is
Exact same for me. Initially, I found 6 better than 5, but after repeat viewings, I actually prefer 5. Still dig 6, and it has better set pieces, but 5 has a better third act, and even though the killers were predictable, it's still not as underwhelming as the reveal in 6.
Dude. You cannot give 5 that spot when the entire third act is a remake of the original's. It is all phoned in and nothing happens after Dewey dies
@@trailerwager8850 I said Scream 6 is more non-formulaic and I do think Scream 5 follows the same beats as the previous movies, specially 1 and 4. But, despite having problems with the third act when I first watched Scream 5, I don't mind it anymore. In fact, now knowing that that can be the last appearence of Sidney Prescott in the series, I value that third act and the its ending (and also her ending in that movie) even more. Alas, seeing Sidney and Gale team up against the killers from the moment they leave the hospital until the very end is priceless, considering how much they passed through and their conplicated relashionship throughout the years
@@danielcm4237 shows how important an ending is. Wish I could see it differently but I see the secluded showdown as old hat and done. The reveals are even fake and forced. That's probably why the guy rips his own mask off as a plot device
65 was the most painful cinema experience I’ve ever endured
I didn't see Indiana Jones but how you felt about it is how I felt about cobweb, I was at an 8 or so and then by the end I thought it was terrible, still appreciate the recommendation and enjoyed checking out a horror movie with my family that I wouldn't have otherwise though
The older scream movies felt more realistic. Chad got stabbed like 20 times in the 5th one and the 6th one and still survived while people in the original scream got stabbed like one time and were already falling to the floor because of the pain. The realism of these movies is what separated itself from other horror movies in the genre. Now these movies are becoming exactly what the original movies parodied.
Dude, I laughed my balls off when you talked about your daughter being a pain in the ass in the theater because my son does the same shit and it drives me insane 😂 my infant daughter doesn't make a peep, but my son will not shut up or sit still 🤣
Lmao I literally have a pep talk in car in the way where I try to give her the rules. Waste of time. lol 10 minutes in and she’s like “fuck this I’m bored.”
@CodyLeachYT lol I sympathize. My son always swears up and down he'll be a good boy if i take him to the movies with me... yeah, bullshit, I've grown wise to the act at this point lmao 🤣
I didn’t know that about Nefarious. That explains why i loved it so much. Just watched it over this past weekend.
Top 3
Disappointing
3-Hunger Games
2-Indiana Jones
1-Rebel Moon
Surprising
3-Wonka
2-Asteroid City
1-Gran Turismo
So desperate for something new was going Rebel Moon would be good.
My most disappointing movie of 2023 is Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023), while my most surprising movie of 2023 is Saw X (2023).
Joel Kineman had a great show a few years back on netflix called "Altered Carbon" but he didn't return for the 2nd season or whatever! Anyway I really liked the 1st season! Great list!
Gran Turismo was my favourite film of the year (I watched it way too many times to be mentally healthy lol) so I was glad to see it on your list of surprises. I also just love your vibes so much. So many people would be annoyed to be "wrong" about a movie, but you're like, "I didn't think Saw would be good, it was great, I'm happy!" That's why your videos are great! Even if I disagree with you on something I'm like "ahhh that Cody gotta love him."
I'm waiting for Steamboat Wille: Blood and Mice Droppings movie so you can review it, if it ever gets made or if they learned their lesson
Cobweb was a nice little surprise that I didn’t know existed until I was browsing through my Firestick. Anthony Starr was amazing and should be in way more horror films.
Elementals was absolutely a hit. Brought my 7 year old daughter and she loved it, and I'd be willing to bet I enjoyed it more than she did.
Best Pixar movie since Inside Out!
@@user-sy5sy2np8rI went expect nothing based on Pixar's recent outings, i came out surprised how good this movie was. Best Pixar movie since Toy Story 4
Top 5 Suprises

4. Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
3. Godzilla: Minus One
2. Creed III
1. Saw X
Top 5 Disappointments
5. Knock at the Cabin
4. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
3. Scream VI
2. Evil Dead Rise
1. Insidious: The Red Door
Evil Dead Rise was a big surprise for me on just how good I thought it was. The apartment setting gave it a completely different vibe that I really enjoyed.
Happy new year Cody 🎇
Great video Cody and the films that surprised me the most were Beau is afraid because I wasn’t a fan of the director past films and Godzilla because I never seen a Godzilla film with humans characters I care about and even the Taylor swift’s era tour movie because I wasn’t a fan of her and I became one and by the way Cody I hope you do a livestream ranking every movies you see in 2023
You mentioned not having seen Lizzy Caplan do anything dark; you need to see the limited series Castle Rock if you haven't already. Young Annie Wilkes from Misery! Its AMAZING Bill Skarsgard also. MUST watch.
Scream 6🔥🔥🔥🔥 (liked it better than 5 & i seen 5 in a theatre…) i get the ending problems but that movie overall is hard. I’m confused WHY everyone is surprised about the cinema goat Godzilla dropping a classic 😂😂😂😂
I will say that Scream 6 is really bad for rewatch value and the ending takes a dive but with the dive it takes off the cliff at the end, I will say,...
It is very funny. The only reason that it bumped up to my second favorite is because I was constantly laughing with how insanely stupid the ending became. 8/10 film for me. 😂
I love your work man, keep it up.
The Killer and No One Will Save You was the only 2 movies in 2023 that I watched at home that actually got me to put my phone down. I absolutely love them.
Im with you on Scream VI except on one thing. You actually enjoyed it longer than I did. I was loving it until Gale survived. I audibly groaned when the emt announced that she had a pulse. Right then I knew it was going to be a hollow experience the rest of the way. I still like it overall but my ranking of it tanked after that scene. Scream is my favorite horror franchise too
That’s weird, because Indiana Jones and the dial of destiny was one of my surprises of the year. I thought it’s gonna be absolutely horrible. It was actually pretty good.
Barf
1 minute ago. Certified fresh. Two surprises for me off the top of my head are The Covenant and Missing
The directors of the movies with the mute characters need to watch the Piano. That’s how you tell your story when the main character is mute.
Hey Cody I wanted to thank you their was movie this year that me and my wife were going to see and I watched your review and saved us on money on see it
I feel about Cobweb like Cody does about Scream VI. I loved Cobweb until the last 15 min. 😂
Didn’t see Cobweb but saw all the other surprises…And I agree 100% (I walked into Gran Turismo even colder than you did because it was a Regal Mystery Monday movie..but like A MONTH early! And it was Awesome!)…and, it’s probably heresy to say this, but I LOVED Dungeons and Dragons so much I’d say it compares favorably to THE PRINCESS BRIDE!
The “stu is alive in prison, master-minding all these killings” was a brilliant idea, and such a missed opportunity
Silent night was a lot of fun. I suspect its one of those movies you'll change your mind on in the future.
Regarding the Godzilla movie : Yes that was the original intent of the movie that first came out. It was supposed to represent the horrors of nuclear bombs, their testing the fall outs etc. A lot of the audience though loved the godzila since they could relate to it (see WW2 hisotry date of release and situation in Japan) so it spwaned the cult of movies that fallowed.
My favourite film of the year was Godzilla minus 1 and wasn't expecting that at all.
James Wan was back on the Saw Production, the daddy of horror thrillers is back so no suprise its good.
Dial of Destiny is actually one of my favorites of last year, and I love Saw X
9/10 times I agree with your takes but Insidious The Red Door was my favorite in the franchise by far and I was very fond of it. Think it had something to do with my son being born not too long before I watched it and the themes of communication and fatherhood that hit me different at the time, but gotta give this man Patrick Wilson his flowers for his Directorial Debut and a very solid performance.
Thanks for the List and Video 😀
Agree on Scream 6. First 2/3 were great but from the killer reveals onwards it went off the rails. So many plotholes, especially the identity of the killers and who thry were related to. Hard to believe nobody would know. It would have been all over the news, Internet and social media. Kirby was fbi and didn't know. Gail such a thorough investigator and didn't know
Killers were predictable.
Characters had so much plot armour it strained credibility.
Opinion has changed a bit, given how unfairly Melissa Barerra was treated.
Surprising:
The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Amongst Thives
GOTG Vol 3 (not a James Gunn fan)
Wonka
Plane
Gran Turismo
Disappointing:
The Creator
Evil Dead Rise
Maestro
Ferrari
My list of most surprising.
Well Cobweb - Definitely a great surprise. A very simple premise but very effective. You have to hand it to this movie for using the the most limited plot to deliver such an engaging movie.
Ruby Gillman - An animated movie that shows that if you get the right idea then animated movies are still the best feel good family movies.
The Locksmith - Very old school but definitely a good Indie.
MI Dead Reckoning - Yes I thought this was a franchise which will definitely be out of ideas like the Fast and Furious but MI Dead Reckoning really brought a good and relevant plot into its franchise with an interesting set up and characters. Plus the really well executed action scenes show that action is still a genre that can give block busters if you have the right mix of drama and action.
Scream VI in my opinion was perfect.....until the reveal. Thats when it just lost me
I’ve been a Joel kinneman fan since House of Cards. He’s always good, underrated actor for sure.
In 2024. Can you review White Lightning and Gator (Burt Reynolds movies). If ya have time. Happy New Year 🎊
I just want to take time to say thank you for your work and reviews. You have a lot to say I agree with, and sometimes all though I may disagree I can still respect your opinion; for instance, I’ve despised Rob Zombies Halloween 2 for awhile now but after watching your reviews and hearing your opinions on it I went back and re watched it and it definitely has brought a new life to that film. Anytime I see a new video of yours pop up on my notifications I know my work day is going to be a bit easier to get through. Thank you so much for work. I’m looking forward to seeing more videos of your in the future and keep on kicking ass brother for all of us horror hounds ✊🏼
Thank you so much. I appreciate it.
@@CodyLeachYT you’re welcome 🙏
Scream 6 only disappointed where most Scream movies disappoint, the reveals at the end
It’s funny how Dial of Destiny just came and went with out any fuss. Not good but not as despised as KOTCS.
They filmed Indiana jones in my city, in fact my workplace was part of the set. I have pictures from the set of the American parade sequence. I saw indie on his horse!
I love your excitement with Saw X. I agree it is hands down one of the best in the franchise. My favorite slashers are Scream and my absolute fav Friday the 13th franchise. I wish they would make a new Jason. Sigh
Thanks!
The Holdovers and The Iron Claw were my biggest surprises. Didnt have any disappointments because i avoid what looks like sht (and usually cody confirms i was right to avoid it). Past Lives was my favorite of the year
Biggest shock was Joy Ride. It was a raunchy comedy but it had a really dear and touching story
My most disappointing movies:-
*Napoleon - Great star, and great director. A phoned in performance, and extremely boring repetitive movie.
*Scream VI - Horrible writing. Plot holes galore, and characters that just won't die.
*Insidious The Red Door - Not scary and boring. A letdown after some great previous movies.
*Indiana Jones & The Dial Of Destiny - Indy over the hill, and a GCI fest.
Most surprising:-
*Fast X - I hated 8 and 9. This was way better than them, and good dumb fun.
*Saw X - A return to form. One of the best in the franchise.
*Bring Him To Me - A gripping low budget Australian filmed crime drama.A great cast, with a star turn by Barry Pepper.
*Gran Turismo - Didn't expect much. But one of the best fun movies of the year.
Good list and enjoyed the video. Both Scream 6 and The Killer made my top 10 and Cobweb almost made my bottom 10. That third act made it fall off a cliff for me even though I know this isn’t a top or worst list. But that’s just opinions lol Gran Turismo was also a big surprise for me
I thought I hadn't watched The Killer....then you described it and I was like...oh yeah I watched that
I had little interest in seeing Gran Turismo just for the fact that I'm not into racing movies or games for that fact. My Dad bought it on bluray for me for Christmas so later that night I turned it on and watched it and I was really surprised for how much I enjoyed it. By far one of the best movies I've seen for 2023
Cody leach the best film reviewer of 2023 !!
Your thoughts on Equaliser 3 ??
Can you please review it??
I personally liked Incdious the red door
We never got a follow up to Insidious 2's cliff hanger ending.
I'm here to see how many times Saw X, not only graces your top ten, but hits number one lol!!! You know what I appreciated about Saw X more than anything? We get Jigsaw in a trap, right, and we KNOW he's going to survive because, you know, part 2 and 3. However, I was literally on pins and needles and holding my breath the entire time.
Also, in watching your lists, I can see how many movies I did NOT see this year. WTF. I need to catch up. I think Cobweb will be on my radar tonight finally.
My top 10 favorite movies of 2023
10 Sound Of freedom
9 Still
8 Oppenheimer
7 The Holdovers
6 Killers of the flower moon
5 No one will save you
4 The iron claw
3 John Wick 4
2 The boy who lived
1 Godzilla minus one
My surprises were Saw X and Gran Turismo. Both of those films when I heard their announcements, I sighed.
Saw them, and I was SO delighted to call them some of my favorites of the year.
Saw was a great sequel/prequel.
Gran Turismo was just a great film! Good good stuff.
