ROTTWEILER GETS IN MY SERVICE DOG'S FACE?

  • Hey everyone! Thank you so much for tuning in to another video of Voodoo the Siberian Husky working! We went out to Petsmart for a small training outing and had an unfortunate encounter with a Rottweiler. The owner didn't try hardly at all to keep his dog from pulling towards Voodoo and about 6 times (which I cut out of the video) let his dog stick his face into Voodoo's while I was visibly trying to keep her focused on the task at hand. He was whining and pulling at Voodoo the entire time even if it isn't super clear in the video D:
    Please, if you see a working dog DO NOT let your dog pull up to them and please don't bombard the handler with a million questions. I'm always very nice and try to answer questions, but it's a pain when 20 minutes of our training session is taken up just by one person's questions.

    You can train Voodoo to paw you, or whine, or whatever you want with a subtle signal, so if you're in an uncomfortable situation you can signal voodoo to do something and you can excuse yourself to "take her to pee"

    People assume that if you have a dog in PetSmart/Petco, then it's 100% okay to let their dog be all over yours. Someone did this to my girl, and despite me telling them multiple times to control their dog and keep it away from my Service Dog, they completely ignored me and let their dog finally pester my girl into playing. When I pulled her away, they followed us and let the dog keep bothering us. I had literally JUST gotten her to not try to go towards other dogs in stores while she had her gear on (she wouldn't try to play, just get excited and want to say a quick hello before moving on and pretending it never happened, finally broke her of that and she'd be content with sniffing the other service dog if they came close and the handler said they didn't mind if the two said hello), but now she tries to run to the other service dogs to play -_- So part of her training was ruined, and it's HELL trying to retrain that! She still follows every other part of her training just fine, and thankfully we rarely run into other Teams, but I'm still pissed that some bitch thought it was okay to ruin her training despite me REPEATEDLY saying to get their dog away and control it. At least they got kicked out for it and told that the dog couldn't come back to the store since they obviously weren't going to make an attempt at controlling it. But I've made some progress on retraining, at least. We'll be going to Petco soon for a long retraining session. Well, partial. Just for ignoring dogs with the Ignore command, she still follows it for literally any other distraction I give the command for.

      Thank you so much!!! I agree, even with my dogs who aren't Service Dogs I NEVER let them greet or play on leash, it's just not safe and it's really irresponsible! And that's the biggest point to not letting dog's come up to Service Dogs, they think it's okay all the time and they lose months (sometimes years) of training and it sucks!! Thank you for sharing this!

    • @LaPetiteMorteRisin
      @LaPetiteMorteRisin 7 років тому +7

      You're welcome! I still do have to take her with me when I go out, though, I don't have the option to leave her home. It sucks, but like I said, it's quite rare we see another Team out, so we don't run into issues. So there's that much, at least. Until I get her retrained on that one part.

      In situations where other people refuse to respect a strange dog's personal space, I feel it's perfectly appropriate to kick the other dog away. If words don't get the message across, actions will.

I had 2 of them myself about 10 years ago just as pets though and I miss them so much. They get such a bad name but it is all how they are raised. Kimber Goehl they are not pets they are just as dangerous as a a full blooded wolf, and they are illegal to own in many states, they require lots of training and a large fenced in area, raw diet and can not be let around other animals or children they are not a breed but a hybrid, but there are breeds of dog that look like wolves with out having any wolf bloodlines, I say this because I know people who have owned a wolf dog/wolf hybrid and they are not something to want

    I have a Rottweiler named Athena. Sweet as can be, loves children and let's them pull and tug at her without flinching. However, has severe dog aggression. I can hardly take her anywhere because of the chance there might be a dog or dogs there. I occasionally take her to pet stores. It's humiliating having to pull her away to a back corner to calm down while everyone is staring at her and whispering. I just want her to be exposed to normal dog things... One time we accidentally encountered a SD and it was mortifying. Athena and I didn't even see it coming, it just turned the corner and boom they were nose to nose. Athena lunged and started barking. The SD and the handler were shaken up and the SD was totally distracted 100% and everyone in the store was so angry at me O felt horrible. Athena just laid sprawled in my lap like nothing was happening and I was trying not to cry. Someone even said rotties "are even worse than those damn pitbulls." I just want her to be normal and not hated by people who don't know her the way our family and friends do.

      "Rotties are worse than those pitbulls"
      Me: Well are you a specialist in animal behavior? No, do you even have one? Highly doubt it, do you even know about 'aggression'? I don't think so, go to Wikipedia and find out.
      I have anger problems '~' But I've been working on not suddenly wacking anyone so I guess I'm getting better ;) but sometimes I just can't snap back :(

    • @alexanderwright4218
      @alexanderwright4218 6 років тому +2

      I'd say you should try to distract her. Like you could go near a house that has dogs (securely) in the yard and (using treats) try to get her to stay focused on you. Though I would say you should work on simple commands that force her to focus first, otherwise it would just be a big mess (with lots of barking)

    • @BeckaLJonesAuthor
      @BeckaLJonesAuthor 6 років тому +3

      Because of the dog aggression i would advice you not bring your dog to dog stores or dog parks or anywhere that may have dogs for now. Your dog needs a good dog trainer like Cesar Millan who can train him or her to be okay around other dogs. You dont want your dog to be aggressive towards other dogs, it can be a dangerous situation for dogs and anyone around while an aggressive moment is happening. Please think about getting a well known dog trainer to help you with your dog.

      I’m not a dog trainer and I can only share my own personal experience. One of my dogs (Bo) is dog aggressive and was insanely reactive on leash/leash aggressive. He’s tried to attack a calm husky puppy in the past. The best thing that worked for him was constant prolonged exposure to dogs and people on structured walks in various situations a few times a day on a daily basis. He went from one of those lunging barking dogs to a perfect, calm heel on leash. I taught heeling with rewards at first on his harness for about a month and switched to his flat buckle collar and an e collar by e collar technologies while being paid with food and praise only for focusing on me. I don’t let anyone pet him because he doesn’t like people and I don’t let any dogs come up to him. I’d like to teach him some off leash heeling soon. He ignores people and dogs now. Even ones that walk right by us on the side walk. Even the dogs that run up to us behind fences. Even the reactive dogs that bark at him. I don’t have calm, neutral dogs to socialize him with yet so for now he’s not dog friendly. He went from losing his mind around dogs and people to completely ignoring dogs and people but that doesn’t mean he likes people and dogs. He’s just learned to relax around them. It takes work to get your dog to chill out around other dogs. Bo achieved this mostly through food and praise because he is fortunately food driven outside. The e collar was added in to solidify his heel and to correct him for inappropriately going after dogs, which I’ve only had to do once. I used to feel like I’d never be able to take him to a place like petsmart or petco but he is so well behaved now, I think he may be able to handle it.

    • @Culvey
      @Culvey 7 років тому +16

      My girl is going through protection/obedience training and she doesn't listen to anyone else telling her to sit or down. She looks at me first, if I tell her "listen to them" she will do what they say, but not until I tell her to listen. Its a pain in the ass to train that into a dog though... which is why most people train protection dogs in some other language, usually German (at least here in the US.)
      Training in a different language, such as Russian, is an awesome step to fool proof your dog though since it wont know what "sit" means and its much easier to keep them from being distracted.

    You are a very kind person. I have come across a few people here on youtube that own service animals and it seems a trent that their videos are of them being smug and rude to people that do not know anything about how to behave around one. I am happy to see that not everyone with a service animal is an impulsive and argumentative person. And your dog is beautiful. I hope you both live long and happy lives!!!

    • @good.voodoo

      I see that WAY too often in the Service Dog Community, and while some people in the general public can be rude most just genuinely don't know any better or want to learn more! If more handlers were open to talking with people in a nice manner I don't think we would have so many issues with people in public being invasive!

    Going to Pet Smart and places like that where other dogs are allowed I imagine must be tricky. Some people lack common sense and some dogs lack control. I once defended a women in Pet Smart because she apparently asked if another womans dogS would stay away from hers, which made sense becasue she had 3 small dogs, and they barked in there non stop, and jolted toward other dogs. Anyway she asked because her dog was working and the women went off saying she was pretentious and thought she was better because her dog was trained and saying her dogs can go anywhere they want, AND she asked why the woman even had a service dog if she could walk. I heard the argument the next aisle over and wanted to explain because I don't have a service dog, but I'm really interested in the training they go through. This lady couldnt comprehend anything i was telling her. Not that he's literally working, like a police dog would. Not that you dont need a physical disability to have a SD, nothing.
    I told the woman with the SD she didnt have to sit here and be yelled at by an idiot. She yelled at me for that, but I'm mean and wasn't having her assault, so I waited until the woman with the SD was out of sight and called the lady stupid again and walked away since I didn't have to deal with it.
    I wouldn't usually jump in arguments but that woman was just insane.

    • @good.voodoo
      @good.voodoo  6 років тому +1

      You're so awesome for defending her! I don't think people realize that Service Dogs legally HAVE to be able to ignore other dogs to be able to perform their tasks and stay focused. The only way we can train for that is by exposing them to other dogs in a store setting, and while they're in training I wouldn't take them into a regular store. I always make sure to stay a good distance away from other people's dogs and make sure I let them know that she's working and they'll usually leave us alone and give us respectable space!

      Desy Kee You aren't kidding. I saw a video earlier today where the handler was in Walmart and bit someone's head off just because the person's young child looked at her SD from a distance. Having to constantly educate people must be frustrating, but many people just honestly don't know the proper way to act around service animals and you really can't expect young children not to look at dogs.

    i have a 2 year old Husky/Rottie mix that i so adore, She is not a trained service dog yet she does the deep pressure of a trained therapy dog. If I am all tense or anxious she responds by either getting in my lap or sitting next to me and pressing hard into me. It really amazed me the first time she did it. She is a mix of the smartest dogs on the planet in my opinion and these action sure prove it :) I would recommend the breeds as service dogs. Voodoo is again proof because she is such a wonderful caring companion. Good luck with your future training sessions :)

    i just had to have my beagle put down a few months ago. although he wasnt a trained service dog he helped me therpeutically as i have bipolar illness. he kept me grounded. i sure do miss him. his name was jake. i adopted him from a shelter and he was 7. but he had heartworms when i got him. i couldnt pay the medical bills for him, it was so sad. youre dog looks very sweet.

    Damn.... I taught my daughter as young as 3-4yrs that if she wants to pet ANY dog she's to ask me, then the owner if I say yes. And to never make distractions around a service dog - just pretend they're not there. She thought it was awful at first but after I explained that they're doing their job and they has to concentrate. The dog could be watching for signs that someone is going to have an epileptic fit, and if the dog is distracted he/she might not warn the person in time and they could get badly hurt. After explaining that she understood how important it is, to the extent that she'll wait until we're out of earshot before saying did you see that pretty service dog - or she just nudges me and nods in the dogs direction....
    Unless it's explained to people they just don't get it... but you'll always get the few that think they know better......

    Wow, bravo for ur patience and ur attitude. The last video I watched was of a handler who makes videos that somehow always seem to be villanizing everyone she has contact with despite the videos only showing what any person would do if they were aware of how to interct with a service dog. I understand how she can be this way but I also think its not right for her to always blame everyone else for her negative reactions to them, like not everyone is out to get u and the way she treats people reflects her attitude towards others. So I just wanted to say that ur attitude was great, u actually stay talking to people rather than showing ur annoyed and u can hear how polite u are with ur interactions, and u said u always try to educate every chance u get. So I just wanted to say thank u for doing that, for being patient and not over dramatizing stuff and for simply spreading a message, well atleast not only the message about how to not interact with service dogs, but just as important.............how sometimes people should just be patient with others who arent as educated about the issues and for showing others to positively interact with each other even in situations where u are frustrated with what they are doing.

    I'm not trying to hate on the vid, I see your great with her and enjoy what you do, but was it really necessary to put Rottweiler in the tittle? I have one myself and she is super gentle, Ik it's only there for the views tbh cause people expect a super aggressive dog... this is why Rotties have a bad rape, and in the vid I didn't see him getting in her face at all really, just being nice and greeting her, nothing aggressive, idk just y couldn't it just b dog? People can easily tell it's a Rottie in the vid if they really cared about the breed

    Hi! So I am training my German shep to become an ESA but I was told they weren't allowed in stores or anything like that because (obviously) they aren't service dogs. She's doing really well not getting distracted, reminding me to take my pills, grabbing my pills for me, helping me with my depression (still training for PTSD and anxiety.) but I was wondering is this true? I'm so confused because she's doing so great!

    • @good.voodoo
      @good.voodoo  7 років тому +7

      ESA's are only allowed in housing and on airplanes but sadly do not have public access. The reasoning behind this is that if you truly feel that your disability inhibits your ability to live a normal day-to-day life then you do need a Service dog, not an ESA :) I started out with an ESA for years and finally my therapist didn't see any progress and found that I was actually getting worse so she prescribed a SD to me :) Definitely go in and talk with your medical or mental health professional about it!

    • @ValastorGrish

    as a trainer at PetSmart who brings my puppy with me to work as my demo dog I can tell you this happens all the time. I have repeatedly told people before that Strider isn't allowed to go up to random dogs without permission, and that he can say hi once he sits... I'll repeat it over and over and they still won't pull there dog out of my dogs face even long enough for him to sit. they will see me repeatedly moving back to try and give space so I can get my dogs focus, and just keep stepping forward. not at all surprising honestly. not good by any stretch of the imagination, but not good.

    • @good.voodoo
      @good.voodoo  7 років тому

      Yes! It's not because she's a Service Dog, it's seriously just not polite at all and a large portion of dog fights start because people just let their dogs run up and get in other dogs' faces. It's incredibly frustrating especially because I pride myself on keeping my dogs safe and not having any of them ever get into dog fights. I try so hard to properly socialize them and one bad encounter could undo all those years of hard work!

    • @good.voodoo
      @good.voodoo  6 років тому

      I would do two things! Start by working her up to getting closer and closer while still giving you attention. Once she knows you want her to focus on you rather than the chicken/food, you can always use an e-collar that has a vibrate setting and correct her with that if she starts going for the food. That way it's really easy for her to know exactly what you want her to ignore and once you give the correction and she focuses on you, give her treats! (sometimes you can use high incentive treats in this case like hot dogs or cheese so it's worth it for her!)

    How do you train a dog to detect such things as seizures before they happen, low blood pressure, and other things basically invisible to humans? Do you smell different, or do they notice minute changes in behavior?

    • @good.voodoo
      @good.voodoo  7 років тому

      It's actually a natural alert, meaning that the dog has to show signs of recognizing it when they're young or older :) No one knows how dogs can detect heart rate or seizures (theories about maybe smell?) but that's how seizure alert dogs are developed :) Once they show signs of recognizing it you just have to shape an alert and reward them for alerting!

      Getting a disgnosis from a doctor is obviously the first step (which it sounds like you've done) and the it's deciding if getting a Service Dog and taking on the work of training them is worth it for your disability! I usually pinpoint which breed I want, find an ethical and reputable breeder who does health testing, temperament testing, and breeds for the betterment of that specific breed, and then find a local trainer who can help you with the basic training!

    • @good.voodoo
      @good.voodoo  6 років тому

      Hey Tayler! For the majority of handlers, huskies are definitely at the bottom of the list of breeds I would recommend for SD work. In my opinion IF you want to go with a husky and are up for the challenge of training, grooming, and being consistent with them, the only ones I would go for are show line huskies. They're bred for temperament and health and will have a way more laid back temperament for working (i.e. down stays, focusing, controlled heeling, etc.) than regular Sibes. They're very hard to train and require a ton of exercise to get them to the point where they can even be worked in public, but if you know what you're doing they're one of my favorite breeds!

    I started getting the idea of maybe getting a service dog for my severe, depression and anxiety. But I'm not sure where to apply for one or get one. I live in Cananda NS, if someone could help me that'd be so helpful!!

      I'm actually not sure what the laws are in Canada so you'll have to look up their laws to get started!

    Beautiful husky. In temperament and looks. Good luck with her training.

    My family was thinking about adopting a puppy to train for my dad because he is disabled and has some anxiety. Do you have any recommendations for good dog breeds for help pulling him in his wheelchair and retrieving items for him.

      Golden Retrievers are a very popular choice because of their trainability, size, and general ability to be incredible Service Dogs. I know of a few people who also use breeds like Great Danes, Newfoundlands, and Mastiffs as Service Dogs for mobility work!

    Just curious, why so you have a full access patch on VooDoo? Planning to get a SD in the future so just curious

      Honestly I just have it on there because it was the only patch that fit on the handle, but it has come in handly a few times with access issues!

    So is each service dog trained for a specific things? Like guide dogs only for other areas?

      Yes, there are many different types of service dogs. Many are trained to detect impending seizures or sudden drops/spikes in blood pressure in the handler, among other things.

    I’m extremely impressed how well Voodoo does as a husky. Tasks and focuses beautiful. Abbey is my Mobility PTSD SD and a stubborn lab so I get the husky on twice told down lol. Where did you get a leash that detached from you and her. Thinking of custom making ours and embroider Mobility Service Dog on it. I hate people interfering with us. I guess I’m more bold in telling them it’s against the law to run up touching, calling at her, whistling etc. people have brought on panic attacks. Especially when they try to enter our space. Thought we trained 2 years in the agency we are in constant training for new ideas. Is that what you’re doing? I have picked up a couple ideas from you as a team in your videos. I subscribed. If I was good with filming and editing like many of you I would love to make a decent channel. I just learned FB Live Video and have fun with my oils. Abbey and I need to learn to share what a real Service Dog is like you have. Thanks for your inspiring videos I somehow seen in my UA-cam tonight. Hugs🐾🐾🐾🐾🌸🌸🌸🌸

    People should definitely see that Voodoo is a service dog and needs to be trained, but at the same time I do feel like it’s just gonna happen when you train at a public pet store that allows any animal to come in
