Andrew Baena Brandon was a bad vocalist but it worked with the band. It had a certain raw feel to it. Just as mick jagger never was a good vocalist but it fit with rolling stones. This vocalist is better, but I'm not sure if it fits super well with the band but this is what it is. No point in bitching about it. I thought the song was pretty decent.
To be honest I have only listened to them because I enjoy Marc's weirdly amazing binary riffs, and this song is no exception. I am really enjoying the new vocal style as well; it's good to have a change.
It hits harder because Marc almost never does clean guitars ever lol. I honestly really can't think of any other notable examples other than ambiance that he uses, but it's never a "riff" in the way it is here. This was August Burns Red-style clean guitar segment including the drums.
This song helps me a lot. It cleanses my soul, almost like a catharsis. The complexity of the rhythm and the monotony of the melody (which is not a bad thing, it clearly serves a purpose) makes me focus, trying to figure it out. By doing that, my mind exorcises the thoughts possessing it and, ironically or not, calms down. This might seem a bit presumptuous of me, if you think so, just know that I haven’t figured the song out. I’m not that good
This is like the first time I've been able to tell what is being said in a veil of maya song without directly referencing the lyric video. I miss Brandon :( (new guy is super dope though!)
Veil of Maya are teaching you all a thing or two ! Just take a minute and realize they're just as technical and amazing as before but now they have some diverse vocals. I just close my eyes and listen and this is the veil I know. I love this song and I've loved them since the days of "We bow" and "pillars....oh pillars.
Totally agree. VoM does a good job of having one of their songs compliment other songs on an album through their unique pacing. This is one reason that their records are so memorable.
Unpopular opinion, I love this song and the new vocalist. The dude isn't limited by his range and the song itself is still very rhythmically tech-y. It's just meant to showcase their new vocalist and give him something to grab onto so they can increase their chemistry. I can hear how this is "slightly" more generic than most of their other songs, but it's probably just because they want to get the new guy accustomed to writing with 'em. Stoked for the album, whenever that may be.
Being a Veil of Maya fan, I am very happy with what I'am listening too. I really look forward to hearing more stuff. I respect all opinions on this new track, but man this is a bad ass song. Stop hating so much.
I happen to really like the change of vocalist, and overall sound. The drums sound tight and huge. And the guitars don't sound over processed, or ignorantly dry/djenty. I give this song an overall A+ in terms of production, musical skill, listenability, and overall band progression. Solid work guys.
I obsess over this song. I don’t care. I like it so much. You can’t stop me from me from telling every important person I meet about it, probably. You can try. It (the song) drags you along.
oh my fucking god. everytime I hear this shit i fucking go crazy a sling my head around like im having a stroke from hell. words cant express how in love i am with the new vocalist and the overall new sound.
Idk if it's just me but I feel like this is the best thing VOM has put out since their first album. I personally like this vocalist a lot better and can't wait to see how the new album comes out.
Love it or hate it, here's the breakdown of this song from a hardcore VoM fan who cares much more about the instruments than the vocals/lyrics. If that's not you, then this will mean nothing to you. 0:00 - 0:53 : Awesome - this is the VoM we all know and love. No newly-covered ground, just a bad-ass breakdown riff that they are known for. Including the background effected guitars, this sounds so much like Wounds from CMC. 0:56 - 1:15 : I'm digging it. Reminds me of some of the syncopated riffs from Id. No complaints whatsoever. 1:16 - 1:42 : Friggin cool guitar part. Reminds me of a riff from We Bow in it's Aura and another riff from Mowgli. My only complaint is that there is three different "build-up" drum parts underneath of it that don't quite build this riff into anything more. If VoM ever had a problem in this department, it was the fact that they play a super bad-ass riff and don't build it up enough - this is the opposite, but we'll get there soon enough ;) . However, I still REALLY like this part. At this point, NO VoM fan [with heavy instrumental appreciation] should be bitching - this song is awesome. 1:43 - 2:08 : I'm surprised no one else mentioned this in the comments - this seems to be VoM's first ever part of a song to be keyboard-driven. If this is a sign of things to come then HELL YEAH! Written and recorded beautifully. Clean guitar sounds great, drums and bass add a good layer of depth, and they seem to emphasize the very "vocal" keyboard riff and add a very Egyptian sound. Which reminds me, why is this song called Phoenix? Because the lyrics don't really give a reason hahaha. Anyway, I know VoM has used keyboards before, but never were they this integrated into a riff. It is debatable that this is my favorite part of the song. It is new ground from them and I like it. 2:09 - 2:28 : This is where the song lost me. The vocals to me truly drown out the rest of the band's efforts. I don't want to blame the new vocalist, but I feel that their old vocalist wouldn't have had this effect due to the fact that this growls were MUCH lower (listen to the ending of We Bow in its Aura and you'll understand). I like the guitar part, but nothing else shouts VoM to me. Plus, this riff reminds me of my least favorite riff from Eclipse which was towards the end of The Glass Slide. I will pretend this part didn't exist so I can continue loving this song hahaha. 2:28 - 2:53 : Nothing special here, just another BAD-ASS breakdown riff that VoM is known for. This one is a little peculiar though because of the amount of post-production that went into this part. Either way, no complaints. 2:53 - onward : ahhhh, here's what the build-up was leading toward hahaha. Great ending to the song. Overall, I can't wait to listen to this album whilst ignoring the vocals hahaha. KEEP IN MIND though - Veil of Maya is better per album than per song - they have fast breakneck songs and then some slower songs like this on any given album, and that is a highly attractive quality in a band. Would love to hear some feedback from some others that share this viewpoint with me.
still sounds like Veil to me and honestly regardless of how many times his lyrics are repeated this song speaks so many TRUTHS which i agree with and as much as i liked Brandon I enjoyed this very much good pick guys... can't wait to hear more
I just listened to this song through my laptop speakers, and while it's a good song, I just feel kind of disappointed. I mean, when I knew they were putting out a track today I went to the mall and bought a bunch of candles so I could sit in my room naked and listen to this. I tried fingering my butt, but I wasn't even the least bit aroused by the song. It's not a bad track, I just really expected more, and I can't stand the new vocalist. First my step dad, now this guy... why do people think they can just come into my life and replace people I love as if they were nothing?
Longtime veil listener. I still stand by my opinion that metal is being overproduced. Veils album ID is the best balance between underproduced and over produced. The vocalist is better than I expected I went in with my "man he won't be as good as Brandon" thoughts but I'm pleasantly surprised. Although I wish the lyrics weren't as repetitive.
VoM is my favourite band and [id] is my favourite album as well. It has great variety in tracks and just sounds great quality wise. I have to say Eclipse was kind of boring to listen to. I pre-ordered it and on first and second listen it was pretty sick. But none of the songs really sticked to my head like many [id] and Collapse songs. I enjoyed Subject Zero. It sounded a lot better and rawer than Eclipse and showed promise. Phoenix however sounds pretty dead. The instruments aren't popping out and mixed to sound dull, the new vocalist is too loud and disappoints. His lows aren't low enough (each his own style but his lows are like almost highs) and his highs partially sound forced, best exposed early at his first "in my hands" making him sound like some screamo vocalist. Overall, they have been in decline but we can't deny the great songs Marc has created in the past. He's still a great guy but I have my doubts about how this will turn out. We'll wait and see, until then, I'll stick to [id] and Collapse.
Yes, Michael Keene did a great job of making sure it was raw and organic sounding as well as having enough polish to make it sound like an album should.
from growing up with these guys..and spending the majority of my teen years going to veil shows..i love the old veil. the original veil..yea this new stuff is sick and all but it will just never be the same..coming from a true veil fan since the beginning
Sebastian Ponce but you have to consider they are mainly progressive... a lot of their songs don't repeat at all. But lyrics idk. It's just one song and I liked it a lot actually it's refressing
It's the boring layout/rhythms of the vocals that make the repetitive-ness more obvious, Brandon had years of practice learning the complex VOM groove, and he did a fucking good job of it. It's going to be hard for Lukas to step up based on this one song, but I'll hold my judgement for the album. (VOM being one of my fav bands)
Allow me to point a few things out here, as I spoke one-on-one with every member of the band last night. This album 'Matriarch' is an aptly-titled conceptual record that is written about the band's favorite female characters. Each song is titled after one of those female characters and the lyrics written are from the perspective of said character. This song for instance is written from Phoenix, Jean Gray's alter-ego's (an X-Men character) perspective. That's what Brandon meant when he reportedly stated that the next album would be very feminine. I'm not sure who wrote the lyrics, but it wasn't Lukas. He came into the band after this entire album was written (The album was written before Brandon departed. He has no influence on this record however nor does Lukas.) and he was hand-selected by the band because they feel he completely fits the vibe that the band are going for on this record. They found out he could sing after he was inducted into the band and they wanted to allow him to feature it on the record. It's utilized in select songs. Matriarch is a 37 minute long album hereby making it longer than Eclipse was. As for the clean vocals listen closely around the 1:30 and 2:00 marks - You can hear Lukas singing. The cleans are low in the mix, purposely I assume knowing Taylor Larson, but that does mean Mikasa wasn't the first VoM song with cleans. Phoenix was. Also, for anyone saying the band dumbed down Marc told me the instrumental aspects written for this album are extremely difficult to play and technical in their own way entirely. Matriarch will also be VoM's most diverse record thus far. Marc also told me this is the band's most to-the-point album. Not dumbed down, but honed in and easier to understand. So honestly, I'm really excited for this album. I had my doubts at first but the 2 new songs have grown on me and I recognize them as still having that signature Veil of Maya sound. Evolution is cool.
Been a fan for 5 years roughly so im not a newcomer and theyre my favorite band buti must say i really dig it honestly. So stoked to see them on the 20th in Minneapolis!
Everyone is skeptical about a vocalist swap (I've always loved Brandon's style) but ultimately Marc is the divining rod for Veil of Maya and whether or not the music succeeds relies entirely upon fans agreeing with his musical decisions. I've learned to trust the creative masterminds (Keene and Akerfeldt as prime examples) and their constant pursuit of the most interesting musical direction within their incredibly unique perspective of the sub-genre they happen to be falling within. Always remember to Mark the Lines.
I miss their previous vocalist, but this dude brings something new to the table. His vocals fit this song really well and, no disrespect to their previous vocalist, but I could understand every word this guy said without the lyrics. Keep the sick jams comin' Veil of Maya!!!!!!!!
I will come unglued when veil comes back to FL. See you guys soon. I'm saving a years worth of destroy just for your PIT ! And the vocals situation..... I Love this dude's sound. Great choice in a new singer Djentlemen! Looking forward to the release!
We are a BAND from INDIA and We have been following Veil of Maya for so long now, and yes we Agree with you guys, that VOM is not the same anymore with the new Vocalist, but we have to accept the fact that Brandon is not with them anymore... It happens with every Band, and YES!!! it is hard to replace Brandon... we've all been listening to VOM with Brandon for all these years.. Lets just try and Digest the New Vocalist, who knows.... we might all like the New VOM someday........... Cheers. we're all here for VOM, and lets all stop the Bullshit...... and enjoy the great music produced by these guys..... who knows one day we will get use to this guy..... maybe our minds aren't fresh since we've been listening to Brandon all these years.... and YES!!! it takes time to know the new VOM..... Cheers...... Dymbur (Experimental Metal) India.
It's sad to see how unique bands start getting more and more like other generic metalbands like a lot that are signed under sumerian records, take ERRA for example... Wouldn't surprise me if it's Sumerian that got the idea of making them change the vocals to more casual ones that more people would accept and like. I personally had to slowly learn to appreciate Brandon's vocals, as, in the beginning, I wasn't used to such and I thought they were too "nasty" but eventually VoM got to be my favorite band, and I couldn't imagine other vocals over that music, it was a perfect combination. But to truly appreciate those things like in my case, you have to be interested in the music like I was in the instrumental part which got me to keep on listening and try and get the vocals. Thus Sumerian's goal is to attract fans in mass who don't care much about detail and the real passion of music, the easy fans so to say. That's how I'm seeing a lot of bands changing, and everytime I see a great band getting signed by Sumerian Records, I see it as the fade out of their uniqueness.
I have The same way of thinking... It sounds strange, difficult to understand, really... everything was perfect in the past. My last opinion about this is... The lyrics are Boring and that makes it sound bad. But Marc did an amazing Job musically, Those transitions are incredible. Let's see what happen when The album has been released!. Greetings dude
Fnic96: Hi this is Ash, the Founder of Sumerian. Let me clarify some things for you: While I have had nothing to do with this new VOM song, I produced/co-wrote the vocals and lyrics for many songs on The Common Man's Collapse (songs like It's Not Safe To Swim Today, Crawl Back others. As well as Unbreakable and several songs on [id]. Just read the liner notes/credits inside the CDs. It's all in there.) The ERRA Ep was finished before we ever signed them. We were not involved in the making of that record. Bands we have signed that were on labels before Sumerian like Circa Survive, ††† (Crosses), Animals As Leaders and The Dillinger Escape Plan have made brilliant albums. If you think their latest records show their "uniqueness fading out" then I think you just have different ears than us. To each his own. Happy New Year. The VOM guys arrive at my house tomorrow to work on the vocals for other songs on the new album. This song "Phoenix" was done by Taylor Larson.
oddlyfrost Listen to their previous albums, theyre A LOT more raw. I mainly meant like the electronic noises and static in this song and shit like that.
This comment wins because im sure ass hell they used Raw production back then, and it was great because the flavor of Marc's playing made up for it. Now and days band let production carrying them instead of being creative in music. Like Common man's Collapse(Album).... quality sucked and I always had to turn the volume way UP But i did enjoy it because the PLAYING and creativity was amazing. Everyone know's VoM quality for their album was lower than anyone else's on Summerian Record but that was THEIR Tone! And now if they was to level up their production to be standard like everyone else, they will be simply lost between other bands if they have no creativity to back it up. The Vocals almost sounds like the new Suicide Silence, if anything the singer of Born of Osiris would sound close to Brandon. But ultimately with any band that changes up, still show support because making music and writing it is hard and time consuming.
Holy crap it took me 10+ times listening to hear the clean vocals underneath 'evil lingers within everything'. Fucking love it when that happens. Killer song, new vocalist is sick
Finally! I do not actually care about the singer 's voice (maybe a little ), but I'm just glad that these bands will produce songs that we can hear. People should actually appreciate it. And I'm looking forward to what Born of Osiris , the City in the Sea , Chelsea Grin and betraying the Martyrs has to offer in 2015
This song is really good! Tho I have to say that I prefer Brandon way more than the new vocalist.... Brandon had these very harsh and angry vocals especially his lows, compared to the new vocalist that sounds way too much (not that normally I'm a person who says it's generic) like all the other vocalists in the prog (djent if it's easier for you) genre. The use of lows that brandon did is what kept Veil of Maya very aggressive with their new sound when they released 'Subject Zero'. But other than that, this song is very good, they didn't lose a fan!
Yeah, let's just create a whole fucking algorithm of the English language to make a good song. Screw it, throw some Hawaiian in their too. Just to go full djent.
***** So, if we're assuming the author's intentions, then I would say Jermiah's comment wasn't a straw man at all... He's also making an exaggeration to make the point that writing lyrics is difficult while also making an ironic joke, if anything I'd say it's you using the straw man on Jeremiah by oversimplifying his argument with the false label of 'straw man'.
+DaltoniusRexMusic Going to have to agree to disagree then, I did not exaggerate anyone's point, I simply drew meaning from what was said. I still believe everything I stated to be true. GG
I'm gonna start a war by saying this but fuck it Brandon could tear this song a new one veil had a unique sound and every vom fan knows Brandon s lows went perfect with their guitar tone this new guy sounds like a metalcore dude personally it doesn't sit well with me his lyrics are weak and his vocals don't really mesh well with the time changes throughout this song I love this band and will give them a chance BC its only one song the rest may blow me away jus stating my opinion
Completely agree this new guy sounds like something straight out of a metal core band and the lyrics aren't great either. I hope this is just one song otherwise from this alone kinda understand why Brandon didn't want anything to do with this. Still going to wait for more before writing this album off all together.
What I would give for a youtube comment section that doesn't have meaningless arguments about irrelevant things.... Sigh. This was sick. 2:21 I think it was - the beat change is awesome.
sick? you wanna talk about sick lets talk about what obama is doing to this country. fuckin illuminati and religion too lets talk about that. im tackling the real issues here.
Maybe technically yes, but that's about it. Imo Brandon fit VoM better, even if he wasn't the best vocalist technically. This just sounds too clean. I liked their old more raw stuff. But can't say more before I can listen to the whole album. 1:15 --> reminded me alot of Within the Ruins.
Listening through small speakers, mix seems biased too heavily towards vocals. Cant discern guitar very well. Whats it like on headphones/monitors anyone?
Not sure if the new vocalist is underestimating or over-thinking what Brandon (the original vocalist) laid down as the foundation of Veil's vocal style, but I'd say vocally he is overdoing it and lyrically he's not put in enough thought. I hate to be harsh but I gotta say my piece.. Veil is one of my favorite bands. Don't push points until it's redundant, tell a story.
I used to be one of the proclaimed "haters" of this new direction VoM has taken. But then out of curiosity I went and checked out Lukas Magyar's previous(?) band Arms Of Empire. That experience changed me. No one is more capable, (in fact even capable ENOUGH,) of fronting VoM than Lukas Magyar. His level of talent is absurd, and I am now so glad that VoM has given Lukas this chance to get the widespread acclaim and notoriety his talent deserves. Yes, this guy can be compared to genre peers such as Spencer Sotelo and Chris Barretto, but trust me when I tell you: do not underestimate Lukas Magyar. His career as a touring frontman has only just begun, and in a year or so's time he is going to be annihilating the competition. As the age-old adage states: "Sometimes you have to sacrifice the old to usher in the new," and that's exactly what VoM has always done, and continues to do, with Matriarch. So to those still hating on the new tunes and the new vocalist: were you ever a fan of Veil of Maya to begin with?
Oh my god the vocals are horrendous he definitely needs some cowbells in his vocal cords instruments pretty good but sprinkle on some cowbells on it and sound put some mooos were good !!
This cd is going to rip assholes wide open. Vocals are sick. An excellent step forward for one of the most loved bands in modern metal, I am very excited to hear more from this record.
I don't know man... I'm a huge VOM fan, have been some their first cd. When Subject Zero came out, I could have sworn that would've been their new style and writing. The drums, guitar, and bass are still great, they haven't changed. But getting rid of Brandon was a huge mistake. The vocals are seriously....just....lame. I know the comments are gonna come back with "All music repeats bro." But he said the same 4 words over and over again, it wasn't interesting or anything. Hopefully the rest of the cd changes my perspective....
I'm starting to hear some old VoM elements mixed into their newer "djent" or whatever you call it sound and I have to say, I'm impressed. This is awesome. I'm definitely getting this album
Keep in mind this song was only written as a vocal representation of what their new front man sounds like, sure lyrically the song lacks luster but all together I feel the new vocalist holds promise, and I can't wait for these guys to make new music.
Well the instrumentals are fantastic, you can't get more VoM than the riff at 0:55, but I think Lukas really needs to be highlighting his solid mids and lows and be reminiscent of Brandon for at least one full album. Such as drastic vocal change, and his highs are just not doing it for me as far as VoM's style goes, they sound out of place.
Personal opinion, they should've found a vocalist which did false chord vocals like Brandon, not fry vocals like the new lead. Fry vocals takes away the rawness and heavyness of their sound and gives them more of a metalcore sound. • Good song. • Ok'ish vocals. • Disappointing lyrics. This is only their first song, so I'll be patient to give my full opinion. Will support them either way.
Andrea Barillari Totally get what you are saying. With fry screams, screams can sound more punchy and in your face, but I still miss the rawness of false chords with VOM. But as you said, just personal taste.
I am so sad. Veil being one of my favorite bands, and now this is them. Brandon is one of my favorite vocalists, so I knew the new vocals could never live of (which they didnt, total different style that I do not dig at all, sounds like a dude in his first band) but its the instrumentals that are such a let down. This sounds like all over produced hot topic post metalcore whatever you want to call it music. No groove, not shred, just generic as FUCK. Im so bummed. Im hoping some other songs have a Veil of Maya feel, even if I hate the vocals. I get that this doesnt sound like "Common Man's Collapse" but this has no hint of VOM at all. Thats how bands go, and I repsect their choices to go to more accesible music, but its still a bummer to see it. #veilhasfallen
We share similar viewpoints, Veil of Maya is also one of my favorite bands. I never imagined Veil of Maya becoming generic. I was dubious of the outcome of the band after I saw them perform at Knotfest, Marc, Sam, and Dan played their hearts out but the new guy; at least from my perception; brought the band down. I'm still going to give the new album a shot, but this song let me down. Nice live video's by the way Rico, I'm especially a fan of the After the Burial ones!
The vocalist isn't bad by any means, but for this band, it just feels like he doesn't fit. For older Veil of Maya songs, the instrumentation was more than likely composed first, while with this song, it's likely that the vocals were written first, which can be observed by how we hear the same chug-esque riff for so long. Approximately how long that riff lasted, I do not know since I got bored after like 40 seconds. If the first 40 seconds are that predictable, then I don't care to hear the rest. Also, I don't think he writes lyrics like a 14-year-old, but they're not really particularly elaborate either. Just stating my opinion.
Actually, the instruments were all finished long before Lukas ever heard the songs. He had to write and record the vast majority of his parts in about 10 days. The rest of the album is much more vocally diverse.
Just found this band, they remind me a bit of Oceans Ate Alaska (another band I found recently) which is awesome! So much great music has been coming my way!
based on this song I am definitely lowering my expectations for the album. VOM is one of my top 3 favorite bands and they are in my top 3 because their sound was totally unique. ID and common mans collapse blew my mind when I first heard them and still continue to blow my mind even though I've listened to them a thousand times, but this is generic garbage. There's hardly any intricacies anymore and literally Sounds like every metal band nowadays. I don't know why but I feel like the last couple years has been a downward shit slide for a lot of good bands.
Honestly, the new vocalist isn't fit for that "VOM" sound. His vocal range is just too generic, if that makes any sense, and they need a person who could wear Brandon's shoes perfectly, or if not, better. They should just change their instrumentals a little.
Finally. Love it. Can't wait to listen to the whole album. First veil song that has a clean guitar tone not heavy distortion the whole time different for them but I'll allow it. Well done
Phoenix is definitely the worst song on the album and that says a lot about how good matriarch is.I love the cleans maybe even more than the growls. But that's coming from someone who never really was into their old stuff. I implore everyone to actually listen to the whole album several times with an open mind and maybe you will understand how good of an album it is
Giruga x Hakusho I wasn't really a fan of Veil of Maya until this album. Nothing from their previous works really struck me. I listened to Mikasa and said "Oh boy, here we go it's the same thing" and when the cleans kicked in I was blown away.
Jeremiah Funke Besides, I don't see why Destiny is being held against me by mister ' This game is going to be fucking amazing can't wait to start this life vampire tomorrow night whenever I get my perfect white ps4. Fuck poor people.'
I can't be the only one who thinks this is fucking awesome?
And yes, I've been following them since 2008.
I thought the song was pretty decent.
this song is fire af, lol youre not alone
To be honest I have only listened to them because I enjoy Marc's weirdly amazing binary riffs, and this song is no exception. I am really enjoying the new vocal style as well; it's good to have a change.
it's andrewwwwwwwwwwww
Holy shit that was awesome, I definitely approve of the new vocalist, can't wait for the album.
Prophetic comment
@@Стив-и6я oh shit wassop dude!
Take shape of which you desire, evil lingers within each valley we pass through!
This dude does clean vocals too which I guess people are gonna hate. He's damn good at it though, Veil knows what they're doing.
His old band was called Arms of Empire. They're pretty good honestly
Not to mention there is some humming going on halfway through this song when it gets soft, and he nails it live.
appleipodtouch2g He's still in Arms of Empire, dude!
Told you hahaha
Hello there
1:46 - 2:08
I've had this riff in my head for days, such a cool little part to this epic song.
EVIL LINGERS WITHIN EVERYTHING!!!!
It hits harder because Marc almost never does clean guitars ever lol. I honestly really can't think of any other notable examples other than ambiance that he uses, but it's never a "riff" in the way it is here. This was August Burns Red-style clean guitar segment including the drums.
Loved this song. Its got a little Dead to Fall vibe going, gotta keep supporting these guys.
I think it's a chick, Lol.
Christopher Velez I'm fairly sure that Lukas is a male name.
"dude it could be short for lukasette"
Or a strange way to spell 'Julia', eh?
Christopher Velez The chick is singing in Entheos, check fb
This song is still so fkn dope, along with this whole album.
I don't understand why in this day and age people still judge an entire album based on one single.
Transitions have such a good flow and everything sounds in its place. I love it
Everything sounds in it's place. What does that even mean?
@@xvii665T the composition is very cohesive
I never get tired of this song. I can listen to it for a week and repeat
Being a Veil of Maya fan, I am very happy with what I'am listening too. I really look forward to hearing more stuff. I respect all opinions on this new track, but man this is a bad ass song. Stop hating so much.
hi
I can never get over the that temporary tempo shift at 2:27.
Did they get a new vocalist?
Yeah
What the hell are you doing here XForts
Didn't know you were a Veil of Maya fan XForts
I really appreciate the digital, sampled sound the guitar has. It is awesome!
First my step dad, now this guy... why do people think they can just come into my life and replace people I love as if they were nothing?
wut?
Comment of the year 10/10 hope a new band can help you find pleasure in your butthole promise land
No no no no you're doing it all wrong, stick the candles up your butt
Wow that was pretty weird. didn't expect it to turn like that ;)
Winning
This part doesn't get enough love 2:21 - 2:34
Longtime veil listener. I still stand by my opinion that metal is being overproduced. Veils album ID is the best balance between underproduced and over produced. The vocalist is better than I expected I went in with my "man he won't be as good as Brandon" thoughts but I'm pleasantly surprised. Although I wish the lyrics weren't as repetitive.
exactly, i love how raw ID was.
Instrumental: Very cool
Vocals: Awesome
Lyrics: Too repetitive.
A lot of VOM songs are pretty repetitive like this one (in a good way)...
Mowgly is a good example...
Like it a lot anyway :D
Sebastian Ponce but you have to consider they are mainly progressive... a lot of their songs don't repeat at all. But lyrics idk. It's just one song and I liked it a lot actually it's refressing
"Lyrics: Too repetitive."
Of course I'm talking about the lyrics. I know instrumentally they're mainly progressive...
***** This made me a lot more excited about the album!
Mmm.... I was spectating more lead stuff or crazy melodies but....its only 1 song... I guess Ill have to wait for the rest of the album...
The breakdown at 1:42 had played in my head for a month or so, but I didn't even remember which band's part that was. Damn awesome.
2:41 "Search for Good Will Hunting!"
Great evolution, this track is so powerful and that bridge in the middle.. man'. Awesome track!
i cant help but think of jared dines djent reference whenever i listen to this song
lol totally
For who is asking about it:
"Our brand new, and debut track with new vocalist Lukas Magyar."
(Via VOM Facebook page)

This song "Phoenix" was done by Taylor Larson.
you just got stomped holy crap!!!
cleaner vocals = bigger audience = more album sales = more $
Sumerian is starting to water shit down, I don't like it. They're the new Metal Blade
To even imply Veil of Maya could be generic hurts my very being
best deathcore djent song evah
Its a good song... I just wish it was more raw, kind of overproduced(like alot of metal now adays)
so like all of VoM's material?
really, you're going to find very little 'raw' in metal that isn't black metal or OSDM.
oddlyfrost Listen to their previous albums, theyre A LOT more raw. I mainly meant like the electronic noises and static in this song and shit like that.
Yeah this would be so much better if it was more raw
I would be inclined to agree if the drums didn't match the guitars so well.
1:42 - 2:07 kind of reminds me of the soft passage of Meshuggah's "Future Breed Machine"
Was looking for this comment. Wanted to say the same thing.
Finally! I do not actually care about the singer 's voice (maybe a little ), but I'm just glad that these bands will produce songs that we can hear. People should actually appreciate it. And I'm looking forward to what Born of Osiris , the City in the Sea , Chelsea Grin and betraying the Martyrs has to offer in 2015
CG has just released a full-length in mid 2014. Don't expect anything new until early 2016.
This is the reaction I expected from people with them having a new vocalist, but I personally love it
Anybody else miss Brandon yet?
Damn!!! Awesome track!! New vocals fits just right, can't wait to listen the whole álbum... Keep it up!!!!
The lyrics are the same for 3mins... Otherwise the song is really nice, I wished something more than that but let's wait for what happen next
Yeah, let's just create a whole fucking algorithm of the English language to make a good song. Screw it, throw some Hawaiian in their too. Just to go full djent.
Jeremiah Funke Hawaiian punch style man lol
*****
Except his criticism isn't really that valid, the lyrics are not the same for 3mins....
GG
I like that Marc is going forward in his music, but I miss his solos. Hopefully the rest of the album will have at least a few.
Veil of osiris, i had to say it.
I will always love VOM no matter what
I'm gonna start a war by saying this but fuck it Brandon could tear this song a new one veil had a unique sound and every vom fan knows Brandon s lows went perfect with their guitar tone this new guy sounds like a metalcore dude personally it doesn't sit well with me his lyrics are weak and his vocals don't really mesh well with the time changes throughout this song I love this band and will give them a chance BC its only one song the rest may blow me away jus stating my opinion
Josh Odom on point
Completely agree this new guy sounds like something straight out of a metal core band and the lyrics aren't great either. I hope this is just one song otherwise from this alone kinda understand why Brandon didn't want anything to do with this. Still going to wait for more before writing this album off all together.
Yeah, it's pretty damn weak.
Brandon's lows are just too good! Best in the genre imo. They will be missed for sure, but I'm open to giving the new guy a chance
James Garside that's a pretty big stretch
I saw them live last night... the new vocalist rocks so hard!
What I would give for a youtube comment section that doesn't have meaningless arguments about irrelevant things.... Sigh.
This was sick. 2:21 I think it was - the beat change is awesome.
sick? you wanna talk about sick lets talk about what obama is doing to this country. fuckin illuminati and religion too lets talk about that. im tackling the real issues here.
sarin royce and what are the real issues?
This is a masterpiece, amazing comeback lads!
2:26 bruh...
Ruins the song.
[S]unjay vox are nice after that glitchy part...makes up for the stuff before it....cant wait to hear the album
Metal Mike I can't wait either, haha
These vocals are soooooo much better
No they're not.
Generic as fuck
Maybe technically yes, but that's about it. Imo Brandon fit VoM better, even if he wasn't the best vocalist technically. This just sounds too clean. I liked their old more raw stuff. But can't say more before I can listen to the whole album.
1:15 --> reminded me alot of Within the Ruins.
Listening through small speakers, mix seems biased too heavily towards vocals. Cant discern guitar very well. Whats it like on headphones/monitors anyone?
Its a bit vocal heavy yeah
Very vocal heavy can bearly hear the riffs
M listening to it through my phone and I can feel the bass of the vocals.. which is bad
But this song is still pretty rad!
The vocals were mixed by spencer sotello of periphery... kinda explains the mix ;)
That explains a lot more haha
Veil is back baby.
I do think that the new guy has the potential to be great for Veil, however. The SOUND is great.
Also, the song itself is great. I know there is gonna be better stuff on the album though. K IM DONE SORRY :-O
I've heard that spencer sotelo from periphery is their vocalist for this album
Ramon Goller
It's Lukas Magyar from Arms of Empire, actually!
Ramon Goller
Dude WTF, Spencer Sotelo doesn't sound like this at all !... X)
RIP Veil of Maya :'(
Hubieses quedao mejor vos marico ):
Danilo Fernández De pana y todo :/
really digging this, cant wait to hear more. favorite part starts @2:08
ill always have id, common mans and all things set aside. eclipse can visit on weekends. but the new album....ill give it a listen first.
That's their whole discography! Trophy 4 u
youre right, it is. We'll have to see if I can add this album to the list of "things I listen to"
love the production it can be art in ways that you never think...
Personally i like the new vocalist much better
This tour list is nuts!!!!! A concert a day lez go
Oh my god the vocals are horrendous he definitely needs some cowbells in his vocal cords instruments pretty good but sprinkle on some cowbells on it and sound put some mooos were good !!
tis a gurl tho
Joe O'Connor still horrendous man lol
this isn't a girl.
I'm definitely getting this album
it'll take some time getting used to
Keep in mind this song was only written as a vocal representation of what their new front man sounds like, sure lyrically the song lacks luster but all together I feel the new vocalist holds promise, and I can't wait for these guys to make new music.
The inclusion of that little clean tone interlude makes this song IMO.
Personally I found more heavier shouts and hardcore vocals than false chord screaming. It's all personal taste.
Andrea Barillari Totally get what you are saying. With fry screams, screams can sound more punchy and in your face, but I still miss the rawness of false chords with VOM. But as you said, just personal taste.
Hit on the head, I feel the exact same way.
TheUmbrellaCorpX7 Metalcore is great! I just feel like a metalcore vocalist doesn't fit with a deatcore band, but that's personal taste.
So, I just noticed the clean vocals in this... I like'em!
I cant stop thinking about how much better this song would be if Brandon did it :(
Digging the new tone. Gonna buy this album without doubt!
lol These comments are full of spilled pocket spaghetti
Me and my fiance have recently discovered that Veil of Maya calms and puts our 3 week old son to sleep.
You must have only listened to the vocalist then if you think this isn't veil of maya.
Please tell me how this is generic? No groove? I'm seriously confused.
***** ouch
"I am so sad" -UA-cam boy, 2015
veil of maya has such a unique and distinct style unlike the rest of the crowd, i love it
The vocalist isn't bad by any means, but for this band, it just feels like he doesn't fit.
1. Interesting. Cool. I was unaware of that. 2. THANK GOD. Hallelujah. I can't wait. Thanks. lmfao :D
so many critics. veil of maya doesn't write bad music. i bet the album will be awesome as a whole
Very lukewarm.. .. I miss Brandon. Hopefully better tracks to come. Eclipse was amazing.
I don't know why but I feel like the last couple years has been a downward shit slide for a lot of good bands.
they never fucking fail to impress me. they honestly get better and better
Wish Brandon didn't leave...
I dont give a shit about lyrics, the music i awesome, the vocals badass.
Good job VOM its a sign that this album will be a better work than Eclipse.
I implore everyone to actually listen to the whole album several times with an open mind and maybe you will understand how good of an album it is
Giruga x Hakusho And i really don't get the periphery comparisons
Giruga x Hakusho I wasn't really a fan of Veil of Maya until this album. Nothing from their previous works really struck me. I listened to Mikasa and said "Oh boy, here we go it's the same thing" and when the cleans kicked in I was blown away.
Owen Huisman Agreed. Mikasa is one of the best songs of the year in my opinion
Giruga x Hakusho Try Entry Level Exit Wounds and keep in mind the year they put that out!
WHAT A RETURN THIS WAS!
Vocalist sounds like a 14 year old, and writes like one too. Oh well, at least the music itself is better than Eclipse.
Eclipse was amazing.
Well, you are an expert at Destiny. Just like many 14 year olds.
Jeremiah Funke And you insult like a 14 year old. Apparently teenagers just don't grow out of bad habits.
Jeremiah Funke Besides, I don't see why Destiny is being held against me by mister '
