- Setup Multiple Elgato Cam Link 4k on a Single System, Yes, It is totally possible and I will show you how. It has been a long time misunderstanding about the way Elgato Cam Link and Cam Link 4k HDMI to USBH converters work. If you pay attention to what you are doing it is absolutely possible to have more than one Cam Links in a single Mac maybe even a single PC system as well. Ut has to dow with power management and UBS busses. Separate Powered busses are the game changer when it comes to Cam Link 4k and Cam Link 1080 and possibly any other USB device that demands lots of power. I also got into Powered Hubs vs Unpowered Hubs and their more powerful cousins the USB-c and Thunderbolt Docks form OWC, Elgato and CalDigit like their flagship T3 Plus.TL;DR: Yes you can Setup Multiple Elgato Cam Link 4k on a Single System 🤙🏽

Do I need one El Gato card for individual cámara
If I conect 4 cámara I need 4 card?
I only want to see how u connect multi cámara on the El Gato card 😢
I keep reading that each Elgato requires a separate root hub, but I see that you have three of them on the same root hub. Awesome man! Thank you!
That suprises me as well.
Does that run without hickups? I mean a powered usb-hub obviously solves the power issues, but it can't solve the bandwidth issue, since everything connected to it is still running through a single root-usb hub.
🤔
@@RA-el6zj Im assuming its a usb 3.1 gen2? Has double bandwidth so maybe thats why u can run double the Elgatos on them.
OMG! That was great! I bought a dock,
but wasn't aware of how powerful it could be!
Fabulous video!
Thanks!
Thanks. Gotta have you on my show to talk Canva.
Hey Doc, I have a caldigit t4, rocaster, and a lot of other things. Now I want to hook up 3 external monitors but I don't have any more ports. What do I need to buy to work with the caldigit? Thanks in advance!
I tried this and the camlinks instantly overheated to insane levels , then causing the image in ecamm to be very laggy
What hub/Dock do you have? You might wanna connect with Elgato to see if you got a bum Cam Link. Mine been going for 4-5year no issues
Totally helped and I'm on the way with one camlink4k and the CalDigit. Lets go! Thanks Doc Rock!!
This was helpful to see. I was optimistic about the multiple cam-link idea. Nice to see it can work!
Elaine Dempsey thanks E 🙏🏽 also for coming on the livestream today. #Aloha
I’m not sure how many of your followers are Hawaii teachers but I would imagine that distance learning teachers would benefit from your expertise in stepping up their game in terms of delivering outstanding interactive and engaging content.
Mahalo Troy. You always showing love and support. Appreciate you Fam 🤙🏽
I never thought about it taking the pressure off your system with the links you mentioned. Thanks!
Enjoyed this video. Straight to the point, and "show your work" rings true. Also laughed at the accidental desktop mic test at the end. I've had many an "accidental camera mic test" in even my short time making videos. I'll look to share this if I ever see the question come up!
Elliot Chang appreciate you. I’m kinda Goofy so I don’t mind embarrassing myself.
I’m getting my brother set up to stream video games and this was awesome to see. Thanks for the tips!
Where's the link to products ? please. I can't seem to see it.
Doc, it’s Lionel. I experience lagging on my second DSLR when recording videos. 1 camlink is plugged directly into the bck of the Mac Mini (no lagging). The 2nd camlink plugged into the TS4 because I can’t fit two standard USBs into the back of the Mac Mini, which I believe will solve the lagging issue with. Making since? Basically, I trying to fix the lagging issue with the camera/camlink plugged into the TS4.
Sorry for hella long explanation
Hi Doc rock, excellent tutorial, now I hope can help me, my cam link 4k use to work perfect, but now when I try to use it in OBS, all what I get is a black picture, un other wealth it doesn't work. Noe if I connect the card directly to the PC, without the USB type A cable, it work, but it gets to hot, so please help me.
Could you say how to use mixer audio if I want use multiple Camlink? How would be audio quality? Is there any option to use some other audio sources like mixer? Thanks
Thanks for the video. I have several Cam Link 4ks and they don’t work in my powered hub. I guess I need to get one of the ones you suggested in the video and links below. Always love your videos.
Hi I have a powered anker hub so do you think 2+ cam links won't work in there? Did you purchasea dock? Which one did you go for and does it work with your setup
I saw in a video a guy describe that if you have a mac with only one USB Hub in root it won't work but here it's working
He probably had a low powered hub. The power is the key as these devices are power hungry
Would this be true of the Elgato Facecam? I can only get one Facecam to work when I stream. I can use one Elgat Facecam and one less quality logitech at same time but cant get two elgato facecams to same. Thank you Nice channel.
No maybe not cameras are a bit different. It is worth trying but again the kaey is they have to be on separate USB Busses
Found this just in time! Thanks Doc!!
Fantastic! I have the Caldigit, also 1000 usb devices. Fingers crossed!
I just stole my buddy’s one for testing. Looks awesome
What software You use to switch between cams?
Ecamm discordforcreators.com/ecamm
Doc what resolutions are your cameras?
4k
Thanks for getting back to me! And can you link the thunderbolt dock and the USB extender that you're using?
How to give the Camlinks different names which they will keep next time you restart the Mac :?)
In MacOS I use OBS.
this is a limitation of MacOS. There is an advanced terminal hack to get around this but it does stick and it's complicated.
Hi
Were you bringing in an actual 4k signal with this test?
Thanks
Thanks! I don't need 4 cameras, but my feed is stuttering from just one camera, so tried the atolla powered usb hub. It worked briefly now back to stuttering. Any ideas?
does the elgato thunderbolt 3 dock work with a windows PC??? since my pc is lacking a second root hub, meaning not enough power to power 2 elgato devices.
"Oh my God, that actually helped!" (Trying to find one for windows now)
Hey there Doc! Hope all is well in your world. I just got my Stream Deck Pedals but found out that they wont work unless plugged directly into the computer (not into a hub). I am running a Camlink into the iMac and 2 Stream Decks plus my backup drive. I have no other ports. I have a powered hub but the camlinks and the pedals or decks dont work in there. DO you have any suggestions? THANKS
Try different ports Mine are plugged into my CalDigit TB4 hub and are flawless. Remember many basic hubs are woefully underpowered. You just might need a strong hub. I have OWC TB3 Dock and Two CalDigit Element 4 TB4 hubs
@@DocRock Duuuuude you rock THANKS!!
Is this also possible with 2 ps4 and 2 elgato 60hd?
Hi Doc. This was a great tip. Thank you. I use ecamm live to record videos and then edit later before publishing. I am trying to capture the four cameras I use so that I can edit in my b roll and different cameral angles. Someone told me that using multiple cam links would help me capture the different cameras, but I'm not sure how each of the feeds will be captured as ecam only captures the one feed. any ideas?
Hi! I have the same requirement: I want to separately record 4 simultaneous different cam link feeds, each to its own file, so that I can edit later. Did you pls find a way to do this on the same mac?
@@BrunoOrsini we are looking for the same. 4 cameras into a Mac
Great video! - I have the CalDigit Thunderbolt 3 dock and currently have one Elgato Cam Link 4k hooked up to it, which is running flawlessly. Good to know that I have the potential to add another 3 if I so wish!! As an aside I'm also recording 8 channels of audio through my Thunderbolt Audio Interface - so I'd be interested to know how many video and audio streams I can run concurrently, before my system chokes!! (I'm guessing as long as I don't saturate the Thunderbolt 3 40Gbps bandwidth I should be ok!!)
Can't you just plug them into the back of the iMac ? Isn't there enough power in those ports ?
Thank you! That was super helpful.
Needed this! Thank you!
Oh my God that actually Helped!
Thank you for this one! 🔥
Would this work on pc ?????
Prolly not they load USB devices differently but hey it's worth a try. Just order from a place with easy returns
Will this still work today on my M1 MacMini 16GB? I want to stream using the cam link 4k to capture my game footage coming out of a device called the OSSC or another device called RetroTink 5X?
Works with Windows as well. Thanks for the tip!
Genius! Thanks so much for this cuz!
Thank you! Ordering my 2nd camlink right now
Hi this this the first time I've came across a dock station as I didn't know these even existed. I currently use an anker usb hub but it has a power supply which is plugged into it. Even though it has a power supply do you think it would still be better to use a dock station instead if I've got 4 cam links plugged in using obs? Will this make my computer run better in regards to latency inssues? I am using a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), proccessor 2.5 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, graphics Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB,
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated bro, kep up the good work with these videos they are very helpful :)
Is there a way to fix the timing amongst multiple cameras connected the Elgato camlinks, I have two Sony alphas going through a OWC thunderbolt dock and going through obs but one camera is slower than the other during a recording, is there a way to edit or better time align them?
Hi! Did you find a fix? Thanks
Great video Doc!
Thanks J. #Aloha 🤙🏽
Hey DR! Once I have already set up my 4 cameras, can I use the Elgato Stream Deck Switcher as my video switcher? I need something tactile to press. Thanks!
Stream Deck or Loupedeck Live will fix that
Oh my Goodness..that actually helped :)
Love ya Country! Thanks for poppin on the show yesterday. Gotta do it again soon
thanks, doc
Please help, I have the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G80 + 12-60mm Lens". and it’s not picking up my camera on my computer I’m using obs and I’m not getting no picture :( getting really frustrated
What a great vid man, I subscribed for all my future tech/streaming endeavors! :)
Can you clarify as I don't see any question regarding this while breifly scrolling through the comments. But with this setup can you have two cameras feeding OBS at the same time? Like, one face camera, and another from a different angle? Or is this only allowing you to use one at a time, just saves you from unplugging the cables to change camera angles/inputs?
four camera same time pointed at whatever you like
Thanks Doc! Good to know!
Oh my god! This actually helped!
@Doc Rock Thanks for sharing this great information. I am trying to connect my camera to my computer via camlink using an hdmi extender over ethernet cable (cat 6/cat 7). Do you have any experience doing this? So far, I have been able to send a single 50 ft using the hdmi extender from my camera to my HGTV. When I try to send the same single to the computer via camlink, it doesn't work. The hdmi extender unit does have an edid button which I have pressed; but to know avail. I have done troubleshooting by connecting the camera directly to camlink via hdmi cable. It works. I have connect same camera to hd tv and it works. So I know it's not the camera, hdmi cable, extender, cat 7 cable. I am thinking there may be a compatibility issue with the hdmi extender and the camlink. Any suggestions?
No I haven’t tied that but it possibly comes down to the privacy/copyright features built into hdmi
Great info!
Hello Dock
I have one camera right now connected to the cam link using OBS pro version and I want to add second camera.i did watch your video so I just make sure that I understand right
If I buy another cam link and thunderbolt 3 dock I can connect my two cameras to the thunderbolt and the thunderbolt to the computer??
Sorry to bother you
Thanks in advance
Yes, well, on macOS at least I'm not as certain for PC
Can this setup work also with OBS?
should work
Awesome thanks 😊
You're welcome!
So…. What if you have a MacBook Pro that’s 2010-11?? LoL I know, I know but that’s what I have..😆🤣🤣😆🤷🏾♀️
What should I use? PLEASE HELP ME
Cam Links require USB 3 so not gonna work. Sorry
also consider 3.0 not 2.0 hub. I had a 2.0 hub and it didn't work but the 3.0 works perfectly. thanks.
Camlinks are 3.0 and 3.1 (4k) so yes that is correct
Of course i would get this notification after i just spent over $1,300 on Sonnett express se 3 slot external expansion and paired it with a deckink Quad 4k card smh.
I just hooked everything up yesterday so now i have to decide what to do. Well see. Doc Rock always coming though for the people lol...
that is way better, and in fact, I'm finna make one. When I made this I did not work at Ecamm yet, and we didn't have decklink support. I do, and We do :P
@@DocRock oh ok. yeah my thought was being able to expand to add more ports as needed. Its been working great so far. Thanks for the feedback DocRock!
Thanks for the info!
Yes! Yes! Yes! Works. Thanks.
You're welcome!
Do you use multiple elgato camlink usbs or just one? If you have just one how will you switch between them?
At 3:34 you say there are four camlinks plugged in. Is there a less expense way to get multiple cameras with 1 camlink and maybe an hdmi splitter? Thanks for the video!
no not without an ATEM which cost more
Oh, I have a M2. thanks
Great video, I started to feel like maybe I started the rumor lol!
Thanks Happy to help. I won't tell if you don't 😎
I just this month (Sept 2022) bought a second cam link and TS3 Plus 15-Port Thunderbolt 3 Dock because of this video and, unfortunately have had nothing but trouble. Camera freezes. Bad picture. Disappointing.
Change your cam link to isochronous mode help.elgato.com/hc/en-us/articles/360041899471-Cam-Link-4K-Troubleshooting-Frozen-Video
OMG! It works!
Don't you need multiple USB Busses for this solution to work or does the powered give you multiple busses?
Hubs and docks make more busses
But it all still has to pass through a single root-hub, right?
Thanks for the video Doc. I asked the question when you were a guest over at LSP. I remember hearing that PC's would just see "CamLink" as the source, and plugging in more than one didn't work because it didn't differentiate by listing one as CamLink(2). Do you know if that is true on PC?
Aloha Michael, On a PC the answer may be yes but to test it just make sure you are using different busses. I may just work because the name issue is normally bus relative
@@DocRock Thanks Doc .... You ROCK ... Aloha buddy
This was helpful and not very long either
Hey Doc Rock...thanks for the video. I have the Camlink 4k, Caldigit TS3 Plus on a MacBookPro M1 but cannot for the life of me get an app to work with the Camlink. I keep getting a message saying to remove the dock. Have you or do you know anyone who has this working?
Try the camlink direct in the M1
@@DocRock Thank you. In a last ditch effort I moved around the cables to different ports on the dock and now everything is working. Interestingly I got a reply from Caldigit that said the USB-A ports wouldn't work for this application (very strange).
Just wish I could explain why different ports on the dock changed behavior, from Caldigit docs it seems the USB-A ports I am using are all on the same controller (must be some voodoo going on).
So currently configured on MacBook Pro M1:
Caldigit TS3 Plus:
- Elgato Wave 3 - Rear USB-A
- Elgato Camlink 4k w/ Fuji X100F - Rear USB-A
- Logitech StreamCam (also had connectivity issues initially) - Front USB-C
- USB C Memory Card Reader (CF) - Disconnected
- Western Digital Passport - Front USB-A
- Ethernet
- APC BackUps USB control - Rear USB-A
Hope this is helpful to someone
@@dekerdekers1533 port differences are common even the built in Mac ones
Awesome!!!
Thanks!!!
