How else to you talk to a bear? You tell it politely but firmly tell it to go. It’s a bear, not a moose. They usually listen. That bear was just a jerk
If you want to scare a friggin animal from a roach to a bear in size just make the loudest fucking noise you can possible make with your entire body and be close to something big like a car or furniture or rock, depending on how incredibly loud and bombastic noise you make, the animal will usually freak the fuck out and will want nothing to do with you at that time, but i cannot put enough emphasis on the *It must be the loudest fucking noise you can possibly generate*

Had a homeless woman in Flint ask us for a pop. Being Canadian, we knew what it means to us, but we watch enough US tv to know they call it a soda. In a sketchy US hood, we actually had a conversation about what ‘pop’ meant, just to be sure. No surprises desired.🥴
She thought we were funny, but she did enjoy her pop. 😆

When I moved to Michigan a girl at the Wendy's drive through was confused when I ask what kind of soda they have! She had never heard it called soda. I had to say Coke or Pepsi.
He missed one of the best detail about the soda bear: the bear drank 69 and left 3 sodas . He 3 sodas the bear wouldn’t touch were all diet sodas.
They weren't sodas. They were pops.

Just FYI: At our family cabin we keep "pop", beer and fruit drinks in a cold spring. One day, our local bear came by the spring, bit the lid off the cooler and tried 2 V-8s and pretty much spit them out. He/She drank then drank 2 beers and then found and consumed each Sprite. It was like; bite, tilt head up and drink. The damn bear also took and drank a whole 6 pack of Sprite that I found remnants of 6 months later off in the woods. Bears love Sprite.
The Canadian bear also ignored the diet pop. True.😄👍🏾

@@DirtyTurtle67 - Testosterone is not the sole reason for aggression, considering that most of the male population seems to operate perfectly fine without partaking in any of the warring, etc you mentioned. I’d blame cultural aspects first, like for example a government trying to get its children into shape so they can become cannon fodder in a war they’re fighting overseas, and thus the government implements physical education and sports programs nation wide so the boys can be ready for combat.

We really do say pop in Canada. 🇨🇦 It feels weird to say "can of soda." We say soda if using a bottle of plain soda though. We have baking soda but we don't call it pop.😉

My mom still gets Netflix dvds because she doesn’t have access to cable-or internet in her rural location. She is getting more and more cut off from technology. I can’t imagine if we were in school these days. I would love to have a story like this covered. It’s a bit scary the techno gap in the country.

I used to blast things with neutrons in college. It's good fun! Make things just a little radioactive to learn exactly what they're made of.

@@Hadenufyet It's called neutron activation analysis. You need a nuclear reactor to generate neutrons with sufficient energy to become absorbed into atomic nuclei of the sample. Typically small samples are placed in the reactor core, but it's also possible to project a neutron beam from the core (under carefully controlled circumstances). After atoms absorb a neutron they often transform into an unstable isotope, many of which emit gamma rays. Each isotope emits gammas with a distinct frequency. Gamma ray spectroscopy identifies relative frequencies emitted from the sample (after it's removed from the core, and carried to a spectrometer). What you get is a very precise analysis of quantities of elements present in the sample. The one archeological experiment I remember used the element breakdown to trace pottery shards to a certain origin based on soil composition.
I did not major in science - I went to Reed which has a research reactor staffed by undergraduates. I got to go through a two-semester training program on nuclear physics and reactor operation, and then I got to work operating the reactor, and helping with experiments. This was about 20 years ago for me, but the program started in 1968, and is still running.

actually it's regional! some places use coke instead too. densely populated english speaking areas of canada are mostly over the "pop" parts of the u.s.; quebec is over the soda parts so in english, most of canada uses pop. it's actually been a linguistics study!

There are a number of specious theories e.g. In the early 19th c. travellers, using backcountry dialect, would ask those who lived in the Indiana territory, "Whose your state?". However, there is no linguistic evidence that the people there at that time used such an idiom as this.

A lot of the world just calls it 'a coke.' A friend of mine went to Israel and would order a 'Pepsi coke' all the time.

Not in the UK. A soft drink here can also mean a fruit flavoured cordial, juice or squash. Soda is used here but fizzy drink is more common.

Soda pop... the east took 'soda' and a lot of the west took 'pop'. I grew up in Colorado and it's always been 'pop' to me. EDIT: Some places call all of it Coke... no matter the brand. I think that's maybe Texas.

Oddly enough, there's a connection between this Meanwhile edition and the interview with Rachel Weisz: the show she's promoting is a remake of Cronenberg's 'Dead Ringers', in which one of the Mantle Brothers (Jeremy Irons) says the line '...and some orange pop!' As a Western New Yorker it is and will always be pop. Soda is carbonated water.

love your "bear tale"! When you told us that the woman said she started reasoning with the bear, my first thought was this: my mother-in-law would definitely consider reasoning with a bear! She was convinced that if only she could come up with the perfect reason, I would turn into the perfect son-in-law. She hated it whenever I responded that perfection was definitely over-rated!

The part about ancient Egyptian lizard coffins sounds like a synchrotron, check out the ESRF.
Synchrotrons are awesome, it essentially moves the molecules and scientists can made an absolutely 3D scan, they have the recording of what is inside. So they can scan a rock with a fossil and see the minute layers inside the rock and fossil layer by layer, to minute detail. They also use it on art, and ancient scrolls if the writing is worn off because the synchrotron can discern the slightest detail.

Soda pop was the full name for the soft drink. Of course this was considered too long, so it was shortened, depending on where you grew up, to either 'soda' or 'pop' (there are Americans, living closer to Canada who call it pop, it's not just the Canadians who do that).
After drinking Canada Dry's Club Soda straight out of the can, which was my first and last time drinking (on purpose, since fountain drink machines can run out of syrup needed for the sweetening/colouring of the soft drink, and what a nasty surprise when that happens) pure liquefied soda.
Kinda stops a person from wanting to ask for a soda. I'll go for a pop, please and thank you!

That's actually what bear experts tell us to do when you encounter a bear. You're supposed to talk to them to reassure them you don't pose a threat.

I might be "beyond the times" but I like getting dvd's in the mail. I don't watch network tv because I hate commercials. I watch youtube and discovery+. The Netflix selection is not what it used to be, but still, where can you find "The Outer Limits", or other old sci-fi stuff? I will miss it when it's gone.
Plus if you have the physical copies, the company can't tell you they discontinued airing that title. Personally I hate owning stuff, so I love streaming, but if I were going to collect any one thing it'd be DVDs.
I like getting dvds in the mail too. I watch UA-cam, basic Hulu with ads (the ads are short), and Disney+.
The ads on Hulu aren't long. Usually just a minute or two which is a lot less than cable.
I haven't missed cable since I got rid of it in 2013.
I was always annoyed netflix didnt bring out their production on dvd/ blu ray here in europe... i have a huge movie collection and despise streaming.... and im getting more and more annoyed that i cant buy good movies because theiyre just coming out on streaming

Yeah, I haven't bought a DVD or CD in about 10 years. I only buy Blu-Ray discs now, and usually only the 3D version. For regular stuff, I just stream it now.

And oh, we do call it pop. And a couch is called a chesterfield and in school you are in grade nine, not ninth grade and your teacher marks your work, s/he doesn't grade it.
I've never heard a Canadian calling a sofa a chesterfield. I sold Chesterfields... in packs of 25 at a Canadian 7-Eleven. Mildest cigarette we sold. Canadians also didn't have proms and "zee" until the kids started thinking we were the 51st state, we had grad dances and "zed" and middle school seems to be what they call Junior High below the 49th.

Rural areas still have really bad or stupid expensive internet.
The previous library I worked at had 40 Hotspots to loan out, which were very popular. Plus our DVD collection gets a lot of use. New movies, older movies, and even TV series.
Back when I worked as a door-to-door computer repair, once you got out of city limits there were still a lot of people still on dial-up for very low-end DSL. I once had a client who lived 5 miles out of town and his neighbor had "up to" 5 MBPS DSL. However, if he wanted it he would have to pay the phone company over $1000 dollars to run the time a few out to his house.
Plus there are some movies that have streaming rights that are kind of messy.
A relative of mine still uses their mail service, she's gonna be pissed they're getting rid of it. It started because they had really crappy rural internet but even when that got better, she found she could get a _lot_ of titles they region-lock or otherwise don't have. I guess they have the distribution rights to a lot of movies but not broadcast rights? And plus in the last few years, nobody at the company gave a crap how many titles you asked for at a time so she'd just order, like, 2 dozen shows and send them back whenever she felt like.
I still use Netflix DVD because, get this, streaming sucks when you want to find SOMETHING.
Streaming only works for ANYTHING.... that ANYTHING 99% of the time? NOTHING.

Not gonna lie, I will miss the DVDs from Netflix because they do have a lot of stuff not on streaming. My Millennial loved seeing Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, etc. Laughed his head off at seeing Sid and Marty Croft tv shows I watched.
What I want to know is, who likes their chicken so raw they have to test it for salmonella? If you're worried just cook it more!

@@birbluv9595 I know that you're just trying to find a corner case, but that really shouldn't be happening. In most restaurants the prep area is in an entirely different room, or at least separate part of the kitchen, specifically to avoid that kind of cross contamination.
@@danielgehring7437 I got deathly sick from food poisoning at a First Watch breakfast place. I’d had an egg white omelette with cubes of turkey in it. But I think they did not cook that turkey - I suspect it arrived cooked in a frozen bag, and it sat out on a counter too long. The doctor said people my age (about 63 at the time) get food poisoning more easily. Either way, I’ve had so much food poisoning and have lived on a bland diet so much that I’ll do almost anything to avoid the possibility!

This is fascinating, (well, I find it fascinating,) it actually used to be two different terms. You'd only call a soda in a bottle a 'pop,' for the distinctive noise; if you were ordering from restaurant, or especially a soda fountain, you'd call that a 'soda.' (Although do note that there was more to a 'soda' than just being out of a bottle, since soda fountains and restaurants would often allow you to add additional flavors or toppings like ice cream.)
So the reason the Midwest, Northeast, and Canada always called it 'pop' was because, quite simply, they didn't have the population density necessary to really have any soda fountains, and they were always stuck with 'pop'. So when the soda fountains began to decline as a business, the rest of the country decided to keep the more opulent term whereas in the less populated areas, they had never really had a chance to choose.
