Can I just say I really appreciate the closed captions? So many don't bother with it but it really makes a difference for me and my ability to listen to videos. Thank you! This was really informative and cool. I knew about butchering being taken out, but I didn't know about the other cut content.
Ngl Stardew Valley pulled me out of a very dark place... I've lost count of how many sleepless nights I've spent playing Stardew Valley when falling asleep was too scary for me to bear. I love this game so much
Aww. Hope you're doing fine now! I know how this feels like. I often did that with all kinds of games or series or youtube videos. To absorb myself into some world and being comforted by that. And things will never be perfect and this darkness will always follow me but games like Stardew Valley can make your life brighter even if just a little.
@@MrPenguinpanda Yes thank you! I'm now much better, got help and my therapist is awesome, but I still enjoy playing Stardew Valley and other chill games like Animal Crossing and watching UA-cam videos
Canadian here. thanks for the history! I am 70 in a few days & have played Stardew since Feb. 2016. Am on expanded now. Love your videos, thanks again. Seven years Play!🪑🏫🍕🫐🌻🐌🐕😎
Happy belated Birthday (from a fellow Canuck)! 🎉😊 It was lovely to find your comment, thank you for sharing your experience. I’m mid-forties (gaming since 7) and I so hope to be playing my beloved games for decades to come, too. 🥰 (I do my best to take good care of these well-used and aging wrists/hands! 😅) Wishing you many more years with your favourite games, too! 💖
i think that deleting the butchering thing was spot on, it doesn't fit the game at all. it's like concernedape said it just feels wrong though i'm not vegetarian. some thing is to kill some monsters in the mines, those are enemies, and another is to butcher your own animals that you name and love.
it also adds to the chill, wholesome atmosphere of the game. although im also not a vegetarian ive always felt kinda bad killing cute animals in games. in this game they are not even mobs they are pets that you raise, love... the selling option serves the same purpose and the game feels more laid back this way
i'm glad that you have branched out from the usual guide videos and have made a more heartfelt documentary style video, the stardew valley community needs more videos like this
Cutting content he feels is not in line with the overall vision, less interesting or too hard to pull off is probably the smartest thing Eric has done and a luxury most devs do not have. He's said it before, Stardew Valley is a game built on things he likes/wants in a videogame not something to please the masses. This is literally ConcernedApe's world and we just get to live in it.
Boss fights would actually be so cool, in the fall fair, the crystal ball tells you there's something waiting in the dark and you're more than ready to take it down. since it's some would kind of be a magical boss fight it'll involve the wizard dwarf and krobus, it'd be so interesting lol
Honestly I'm glad that it was cut, this is coming from a FromSoftware fan who loves a good boss fight. The problem that I see is Stardew Valley's combat is to simplistic and clunky for boss fights to work, also it would conflict with the casual nature of the game as silentj624 said. If I want to fight bosses I'd rather play a different game than Stardew Valley.
its interesting to think about what the game would be like if he included these features but I think concernedape made the right decision making stardew a more relaxing game
That's probably true! I do have many things I would love to see in the game but that's what mods are there for. Plus it's more of a fantasy thing because I like to think about things I would include in my own game if I ever made one. :D
No problem :) I have hearing problems in general (since birth) so I can understand the pain of no subtitles/cc. Not to mention I do have an accent so in case someone can't understand me I include them. I think I didn't have time to do it in a few videos but otherwise tried to make them for every video! Glad to hear it's used!
Reading about his journey and his old posts and comparing that to how far he has come made me feel very emotional too so I really wanted to include that section in the end :)
Getting into Stardew Valley and especially playing it with my friends (and having fun modding!) has really brightened my life massively ❤️ the game has a special place in my heart
This video was amazing and gave me a great inside of what flows into the development of a massive indie game like this. Your videos are fantastic and even someone who is not playing stardew valley would enjoy them.
Thank you, Mr. Penguinpanda. I love the way your mind works! I have really been enjoying your deep dives into both the mechanics and history, especially how well you synthesize and distill the best parts and are able to bring them back for us in such an enjoyable way. Hope you are doing well with whatever you are up to now! 💖
Even if the butchering system was in the game I could never chop my animals up i get attached like my grandpa always said "if you rase animals for food and meat don't name em if there for pets name em and treat them like your own child "
The butchering is such a tiny feature its so dumb that people got so upset it was removed??? Also since when has every game treated people like vegans/vegetarians? Sounds like people complaining because other lifestyles exist and are getting rep in games lmao
He did the right thing with not being able to kill your animals. I would never had played a game where you can kill your animals. I have even a moral dilemma with the fish eating and using eggs and milk because I don't in real life because I love animals and don't want to exploit them. Had no idea he was vegetarian big 👍from me.
honestly, as a guy who eats meat regularly, it still feels wrong to include butchering in a game like Stardew Valley. So people saying it's a vegetarian/vegan thing sounds like bs
Thank you for this video! I am super new to Stardew Valley, so this made me feel part of the history. Regarding butchering, I would not have been comfortable playing that aspect, even before I was vegan I have been a super animal lover. I probably would have stopped playing if butchering was part of game play. But I'm shocked that people would be sad they *couldn't* butcher? Is this part of other games, to the point a person would complain without it? Consider me confused.
I was hoping this video was gonna explain that weird "Warp totem: Mr Qi's Arena" object you can find in CBJ spawn items menu. Nonetheless, great and informative video!
I did have another whole section at the end talking about this item but I thought the video was long enough already and I liked the flow better this way :)!
@@MrPenguinpanda omg that's too bad, I was really wondering about that item and couldn't find any info online! I hope you can cover it in the future 'cause you did a great job with all the rest :)
As someone who grew up on a farm with pigs, even I can't imagine stardew with butchering, it truely doesnt fit the vibe. Stardew valley's farming isn't as industrial as modern farming, it feels like a large scale garden, when I think of farming at this scale, I think of animals being used for their produce, not their meat. Even the tractor mod does feel right to me, and I've driven several ton tractors pulling 50 foot cultivators across acres of field. Even if you're generous and say every tile is 1m^2 the entire farm is easilly the smallest piece of farmland I've seen. All in all stardew isnt designed around industrial farming, but a more laid back, calm, and simple form of farming (which I love).
I'm not a vegetarian and I have no problem with violence in games. However, even I'm glad that butchering was cut. I don't care to kill innocent animals that I've raised from birth and have given pets to every day. Plus, keeping them alive and happy is better in a practical sense, since they'll constantly produce milk, eggs, truffles, and cotton for much more money in the long run.
Google about decompiling Stardew Valley. There's a section in the wiki about this! I also asked per mail and he is okay with sharing code parts etc. for my type of content. Ofc you should not share the whole code publically and also not copy his code to make your own game or sonething like that.
It's a shame that butchering was removed, kinda stupid thing to do in my opinion in a farming game but at least there is a mod with that so not everything is lost
About butchering, it could have been replaced with a butcher shop in town. A play could then choose to sell livestock to the butcher for a portion of the meat. But also, the butcher could just sell meat even if you don't sell him your animals. I'm not sure if that would need its own skill, it could just be some bonus points into farming. Or have no skill at all.
I think it's great that the option to butcher animals was removed, but I am a little puzzled about keeping the ability to fish. That suggests that fish have less emotional value to the farmer than other animals, while they are both living creatures.
Fishing is a thing in all farm like RPG games while butchering is not. If you wanna butcher go play Graveyard Keeper. He wasn’t saying fish have less emotional value or trying to apply it. Fishing is just what every game usually has
This is exactly the type of videos the stardew community is missing

This felt like an open love letter to Stardew Valley. Very heartfelt, and informative too.
