      I just downloaded your Year Round Vegetables. But I did already create designs for my gardens. First for the garden in my front yard at home and then for the allotment garden I rent since early 2021. In both designs I made use of the permaculture design principles, which I learned mostly from a year-long online PDC-course.

      Its been a long time. Hope your daughter is well now. Its too long time to update. I didnt want to ask for update because of you personal time. But your updates are magic. Before it gets out of our mind you should add one. Even its a long time. Put shorts also.
      My suggestion in your is garden, you have your own place and such a big forest around your surrounding. Why cant you grow honey bees. Easily, you can accomadate 20 boxes. Bees create more honey in box but you can harvest 50% of it. Anyways you can harvest 5 to 10 kgs per boxes. It means 100 to 200 kgs per year.
      This bees also pollinates your garden and bringing up production.

    My garden space is long and narrow. The best thing I did when I designed my garden was to add 2 compost areas. One is close to the processing area (close to the cellar, where I have an outdoor sink and table) and one at the other end which is my chicken enclosure. Now, when I harvest, I can throw things in the closest compost pile and I don't have to walk a long distance. Looking forwrd to seeing your new garden!

    My hints: Plan your trees first. They will take years to bear fruit (and cast shadows on your land too).
    Check out the local markets. Which fruits/vegetables can you buy in good quality and at moderate prices? For example carrots and potatoes. They don't have to be grown primarily.
    Observe how and where rainwater drains after heavy rain and take measures to channel or dam it.

    • @ajb.822
      @ajb.822 Рік тому +1

      But be aware of effects that doing those things may cause. Such as, a tree(s) downhill suddenly not getting the amount of water they're used to, or your damn washing out in a heavy rain event, just all those things. Geoff Lawton shows a lot about his systems in some fairly recent videos of his farm in NSW, AU, after a huge rain event in his area.

    Very nice and helpful video. We bought a piece of land in Spain two years ago and due to work commitments we are going quite slow. One thing I've noticed in relationship to sun exposure is that sunny can mean different things in Central Europe or in southern Europe. We have more success growing many vegetables in a half shade that are supposed to be grown in full sun. We also discovered that tomatoes are incredibly drought tolerant and can grow without watering perfectly. Specially if grown without a support and allowed to roam near the ground. Anyway, looking forward to the next video!

    Bought a small holding on 1 Acre in Caldas da Rainha it’s been a year and I’ve put down 12 stations for irrigation. My biggest mistake as you alluded to was not knowing the land (flood areas, soil types, wind direction, fire areas, orientation etc ) I started to plant as I’m crazy about gardens and had immediate losses, due poor preparation (preparation = gold performance) So I started again getting landscaping done, preparing compost, designing, laying a 12 station irrigation. I wish I had your knowledge but at 61 not so technically inclined. My biggest toil was removing 150m of giant reed (canash) which I thought was a great thing, however they held back water flooding in winter, so I’d suggest do nothing until you’ve seen all the seasons.
    Remember to dig a well in middle of the summer for low water table or it’ll definitely not last 12 months. As you said sellers will say water in wells 12 months of the year, but if they not used, it’s meaningless, check rainfall maps instead in your area and check with surrounding farmers (the best people I’ve met are Portuguese farmers, but you need to act respectfully on arrival) . I’m learning a ton off your site, basically addicted 😂 thanks for guidance, can’t wait for more gems.

    It's good to see another of your videos. Are you planting a winter garden? My husband and I just bought a cottage in a retirement community and will be taking over a minimal garden. I want to expand it, but in a way that is manageable for the elderly. I would like to do what you do and I only reluctantly admit I can't. Still I will do something!

    • @TheDutchFarmer
      @TheDutchFarmer  Рік тому +2

      Definitely! We're building the garden as we speak :) Maybe consider a couple of raised garden beds? Perhaps there is someone there that can help you out to get started... Otherwise have a look into container gardening. Easy to setup, not much space needed, and easy to manage. Good luck with growing!

Filled with a layer of gravel, crushed rock, river sand, flagstones and a lime mortar. First time we ever did it, but it turned out quite nice. Pretty straight forward process!

    I've got my money saved for land, I just can't figure out how I will be able to earn some money whilst establishing the farm. I've heard of some folk who started with their savings, build their dream property ,then ran out of money and couldn't earn any so they had to leave It. So I don't want to fall into this trap.

      If you can figure out other sources of income while you are building your farm that will help. Perhaps a small rental unit on your farm if allowed, or raising animals for breeding? Definitely put thought into this before you start your farm so you don't get caught out. Good luck.
