    Lot of Love and Regards from an Indian Farmer. I am thrilled to see how you guys transformed that barren land into a Food Forest. Nature may be harsh some times. But it sure provides abundantly to those who toil on it with good intentions....God Bless

    Hey we did something very similar about nine years ago in Galicia (just North of Portugal), we also have dry summers but still get more rainfall than Portugal. Still, we found that in these mediterranean climates, we had much better success planting trees directly in the swales, much less watering to establish them this way. We never had waterlogging problems with the trees, especially on a slope. When you add organic material swales get very absorbent and suck the water down really well, unless there is really hard clay. Anyway we have some really nice drone shots of what this type of project looks like when it is mature on our channel if anyone wants to see!

    Glade you were able to get these in place and infiltrate the winter rains. Amazing what you as a trained and experienced Permaculture designer could envision lay out and construct. This is the way forward.

      @@TheDutchFarmer I wonder did you buy the machinery or is it relatively easy to hire a machine? I wouldn’t mind renting a machine periodically to get some big tasks done on the land

    • @petervermeer.4904
      @petervermeer.4904 2 роки тому +4

      @@kohtime ..My guess is that the guy (with the machine) is hired. You can let them come for an afternoon, for a swimming pool as an example.
      Or for a few full days, in this case.
      You can also in this area hire people, local farmers, for a day with big tractors if needed. So you don't have to buy all the big machines yourself.

      @SamsLiberty 2 роки тому +2

      @@duanepaquin1665 I believe he is using it to create a line on contour for the swale. It is a clever way of finding a level point. The rock will settle to a plumb line if the points are level. It appears to have been used historically. I found more on it by searching 'Ancient Egypt Level and Square'. But this is the only place I have seen it used for staking out a swale, clever!

    Fascinating to watch. Trees are key components and often the small ones are easiest to get established. I love your swales because you natural resources, unlike agribusiness in the US where everything is designed for the use of large equipment. You are developing biodiversity which reduces the need for pesticides. I love observing your progess.

Obviously you market gardening experience has given you a good grounding. Your “man” with the mini excavator is a wonderful worker and a very fortunate find. He is the first non homesteader from that country that seems to have real work ethic. Congratulations and please keep sharing your activities.

      The granites in Portugal were very much shaped by the last Ice Age, in the geology time scale not that long ago. With ice in the rock cracks they break in multiple pieces that are then eroded by wind, making those rounded shapes!
