Was an unexpected warm week last week with warm weather blowing in from Africa. We had to quickly install a basic irrigation system to ensure we could water our trees quickly and efficiently. This system is NOT done. Check the description box for more information. Want to start growing your own food? In my free guide I go over 6 steps to help you go from beginner gardener to year-round abundance. Download here: www.rootsreconnected.com/

Btw... seriously, of all the gardening channels I watch, aside from Charles Dowding, yours is the only videos I really look forward to.... less chat, which is refreshing.

I am struggling with the calculations and using the right stuff for my needs and your project would be the best source I think. Many thanks, stay safe!

Regarding that machine at 3:40, please note that in days of very high fire risk it's forbidden by law in Portugal to have machines running without some safety attachments, like retention of sparks or similar, and fire extinguishers always ready. The risk is real. You are obviously a very knowledgeable professional but you come from a colder and more humid climate, so you may not be accostumed yet with our laws and risks here. There are many fires that start precisely on machines like those left operating without supervision or safety accessories.

It would be highly valuable to estimate first year investments needed besides the land cost. Like to setup irrigation, plants cost, make swales etc etc

    • @BriaGrowsFood
      @BriaGrowsFood Рік тому +2

That would all be heavily dependent on the land size, location, and other variables such as the climate of the location, wildlife pressure, and how much plants & seeds cost in your country/currency

We had around $40k and we were thrifty and ran out in 18 months. Every place has different costs of course.
I’ve currently gone back to work. Should be better set up this time. Plan to have 2-3 Airb&b by Xmas, this should create ample income. Also we are freehold, so it’s not easy for most people.
Some of our major costs were
      A Well ( unlimited water) $6k
Water storage and irrigation set up about $2k . We already had a working pump.
Animal stock 2 milking cows with calves 4.4K , 15 sheep
      $1500 . Pigs ducks chickens geese around $1k .
      Fruit trees only afford $1500.
Food , power etc took care of most of the rest. Of course bought a 100 small items, usually second hand. Pruned people’s grapes for free and took their cuttings and created a Vineyard for almost nothing. But as thrifty as we are, money just burnt up.
We now have unlimited meat, and a lot of vegetables and fruit.
Just put an off grid solar system ( the cheapest ever) including batteries for under $3k.
Hopefully this gives a little insight, but there’s so many variables.
Fencing, as we couldn’t put stock on our 33 acres until complete. About $2k

@@MsCmsh The biggest time killer is annuals, vegetables etc. I deliberately focus on things that produce for years.

    Bonjour
Now that your pipes are installed this might be of help……
Buy a few cans of fluorescent pink spray paint and spray all of your pipes with it. I just put a piece of cardboard underneath it and kept moving it along. Makes it really easy to see where that are at a glance. Especially if there is machinery being used so that they don’t get run over and broken.. also much easier to see through long grass etc.
I di all of the tool handles as well so that they never get lost . It’s worked really well and tools I have had for more than 25 years still have remnants of their first spray of pink.
All the best for your future.
    Julie

It takes longer but it doesn't cause as much collateral destruction. It is also much easier to service and in my cases cheaper to service. It's realistic to be able to store it inside as well. Please, what is your goal? I follow a lot of very admirable projects, turning desert into forests (trees for shade, under which vegetables and fruits). No chemicals are used. Respect for nature and wildlife.
