I watched this whole movie few months ago. It showed how much care a teacher put in a group of students. Most of them at the beginning didn't care, messed with him, but he showed how much he wanted these kids to be successful and not just stuck in a mindset of not being good enough. Eventually the kids did listen to him. Slowly understand what he was teaching them. And passed a test they had to take twice because the school board thought they cheated the first time. This movie and Coach Carter shows how important to push yourself to be able to achieve anything.
ONE aspect; there comes three arrogant young men, breathing to be "cool" and gang members. But he doesnt show no fear, just good naturelly handles them as welcome students whom come a little late... And they obeyed, sat down and didnt disturbed.... And so he managed to avoke the leader, provoking him into thinking for himself, and rediscover the zero...
Notice too he makes them work for his approval - it is not automatic or too easy. Cynicism rather than smiles at first and then rewards are smiles and genuine warmth.
Such a good movie. It was wild that I rented this from the library when I was in college and going through a tough time. I ended up taking time off that semester not sure what to do. I ended up watching a lot of George Lopez show that winter while looking for work, and it was crazy to see all these actors come back into the show. THese movies make people want to become teachers. Missfeke not necessarily....not if you had command of the class. jaime "kimo" escalante taught at one of the roughest schools in all of east LA and managed to make it a math institution. several if not hundreds of his students went on to pursue math at MIT, cal tech and beyond. why? how? well, half of it was respect. he was a barrio kid himself, a longtime resident of "east los." this was something the kids could immediately relate too and respect. so that in itself can help, though there are several ways of grabbing control and respect of a classroom - one of them is not letting that kid knock you out.
Joey Velarde Actually, Mr. Escalante was not a barrio kid himself. He was born and raised in La Paz Bolivia. He immigrated to the U.S. as a computer programmer before he became a teacher. He brought his respect with him and passed it on to his students.
