  • I'M ALLERGIC TO COLD | How I Manage Cold Urticaria Symptoms | My Strange Allergy
In today's video, I'm talking about my strange allergy to cold temperatures and my experience when I found out I have cold urticaria. I'm also sharing a few tips on how I manage cold urticaria symptoms, such as cold-induced hives, itching, and swelling.
I discovered that I have cold urticaria when I was 16, and the first reaction I get when I say I'm allergic to the cold is "What? That's not a thing. You're just overdramatic." But anyone who has cold urticaria knows that it is very real. Breaking out in hives is the worst feeling, and it can even be embarrassing at times, but the best way to manage symptoms is to prevent them in the first place.
Have you heard of cold urticaria before? Do you know someone with cold urticaria? If so, be sure to share this video with them! I would love to meet someone who also has this strange allergy. Be sure to leave a comment sharing your reaction to this video! Thank you so much for watching! I truly appreciate each and every one of you! ~ Lauren

I was diagnosed with cold urticaria by an allergist and suffered for 15 years with it without any advice other than I should not go outside or in cold water. I couldn't even get something out of my fridge with no gloves or drink cold water!
I NO LONGER HAVE COLD URTICARIA🥳...I was prescribed very high doses of prednisone (60mg at first) for 1 year because of a serious drug reaction called DRESS Syndrome. Now I am off the prednisone after 1.5 years since my reaction and I no longer have any reaction to the cold🤷‍♀️ I've told my doctors but nobody seems interested in knowing why this is🤯.
I have been tested for lupus but negative. I have eczema and continue to suffer from random hives and skin reactions though never from cold temperature. This condition is seriously debilitating, isolating and painful. My heart goes out to everyone who suffer from it💗 Thanks for making this video!

I have cold urticaria. What has completely eliminated it for me is eliminating nightshades which are Tomatoes, potatoes, egg plant and peppers (bell, jalapeno, cayenne, chilli etc). I started with carnivore diet and slowly introduced foods until i reached the conclusion that nightshades create a histamine intolerance for me. Hope you all find this helpful.

Omg! finally! I have cold urticaria since I was 5, i'm 26 turning 27 this year, and i NEVER crossed irl another person with it, usually my teachers would be noticed at the start of the year but they had to call my parents when it get worst, just in case. It was never a life or death situation, but in my city the weather is wet (that's not the word i'm looking for, sorry, english is not my first language) and that, for me at least, is the worst, like if it's dry cold the urticaria is not so bad. As I said, not life or death but every winter, or even summer if i go to the beach (and I live in a beach city) i will go into to the sea and I can't stop my skin from itching.. or when i wait the bus, when younger to school, when older to work. I just live with it. When i mention that i have allergie due to cold, people thinks that i'm saying like "i hate cold so much.. i have allergy to it" or something like that, and I'm like no.. I wish it was like that, i'm acctualy suffering a little but for long periods of times, sometimes it itches so mutch that i can't think, i even cried a couple of times, cause i couldent get to anywhere warm to begin to be stable again. It's like a bad companion that likes to be with me half of the year and make my life a little more difficult.
But really, it's been so many years and never meeting anybody that has or knows abot it.. i just forget that i have it until it's cold again
Sorry if anybody reads this, it's long and not well redacted, sorry.
Big hug if you are one of us, and if you don't, big hug anyways

I have also I started having it since I was 16 too. I’m still struggling with it. Winter is my worst nightmare. I usually gets triggered by walking , running and drastic weather change from hot to cold. I get itchy and the feeling of burning in my legs and bums. When I exercise I tend to avoid the treadmill at all cost. I dream always warmly during winter my legs usually wear over the knees boots. I also take this medication that seems to work but sometimes it doesn’t. I am planning to see a doctors to run some test and see if he can get on treatment. It’s the worst thing ever like I wouldn’t wish it upon anyone. It kinda reassuring that I am not the only who’s struggling with this.

Good luck! I have had it for 15 years, and like you, it can be triggered by walking, running, drastic weather changes etc. What's even more annoying, is that it doesn't ALWAYS happen, so it's very hard to know what to do and how to pinpoint the problem. I get it when going into a hot bath or cold water too.

Well done, Lauren. There's not much info on CU because it's so rare and the symptoms are mild and not particularly life threatening. For me however, I finally confirmed my CU while surfing. I had a reaction all over my body at once and it lowered my blood pressure and I felt dizzy, weak and slightly nauseous. I got out of the water immediately. A friend with me that day is a doctor and checked me out but had no idea what it was. I dried off and changed and drove home and it was gone basically as soon as I warmed up. Googled it and did the "ice cube test" and put an ice cube on my forearm for a few minutes and sure enough it produced a hive. My doctor said he'd heard of it but never seen it in 35 years! Went to a dermatologist and all he said is yep, you have CU (take an antihistamine before being in cold). I read it's a cryoglobulin that releases histamine when exposed to cold. I do believe your diet theory has a lot of merit as I changed to paleo and eliminated a lot of sugar from my diet and my CU seems to be less of an issue. At one point I thought I was over it then had a reaction one day so I suspect it's diet. If you look at other autoimmune disorders like Crohn's disease it seems to have followed the development of the modern diet (sugar and processed foods). Some people have it so bad they can't drink cold liquids or eat ice cream and have even moved to warmer areas like Hawaii or Florida. I was living in MI for two years and it wasn't an issue until I moved back to CA (age 34) and was working in an office where the AC was kept a bit on the cool side. I noticed my hands would get a bit red and itchy then after using the bathroom and washing my hands (hot water wasn't working) it would get worse. One interesting theory I read is it could be a genetic adaptive abnormality given it seems to me more common among people with heritage from Northern Europe. The theory is if you work with your hands in cold water a lot such as fishing, it could be a benefit as it can keep your hands from going numb so you have more dexterity when they're cold. People from Africa are more susceptible to sickle cell anemia but it happens to give them immunity to malaria. The ability to digest milk sugar (lactase) began among just one group of people in Europe who raised cattle (most of the world's people can't). Epicanthic eye folds among Asian people are an advantage in areas where dust blows a lot. About 20% of people sneeze when they go from a dark room out into the sunshine (myself and my kids) with the theory that coming out of a dirty dusty cave it may have been a good idea to get that stuff out of your nose quickly. People in the US can search for clinical trials being conducted for CU at clinicaltrials(dot gov) and you'll find a few if you're interested in participating in one. There's also a CU group on Facebook. There's a similar condition people get when exposed to vibration if you can believe it. Reynaud's Syndrome is similar too but I don't think produces hives; just cold hands.

I developed mine at 15 after swimming in the sea. I not only got hives, but my whole body was shaking from the cold, from only 10 minutes in the water, and I sort of collapsed on the beach. After that I got the hives on fingers, wrists, ankles, flanks, forehead and lips (one friend even worriedly asked me if someone had hit me!). I made sure that I began covering up really well, and no cold water swimming, and haven't had an episode for a long time now, but as I'm now 80, maybe it diminishes with age.

It's not fun feeling isolated but when you tell a healthcare provider you're allergic to the cold and they, like so many others I've encountered, laugh and say, "Oh, so am I!", it's very frustrating! I know we don't all understand everything and people aren't mind readers but it's just I hear it soooo often that it's just getting old. I've been a ton of research on the subject myself and also right about some other potential underlying health issues. Although I don't know much about it, Celiac disease did come up. Until I saw my face on the mirror and my lips swollen. Even then I still didn't think it was allergic. Until now, when I'm texting this comment. I was rubbing my face with ice cubes to cool my pimples bcs some people say it's good and I also did it before and nothing's happened. But tonight, when rubbing it was fine, ofc COLD, but after that my face feels itchy and burn. I never felt burn not even when the ice cream incident. So I look myself on the mirror and my face even my fingers are swollen. I just recently got diagnosed at age 45. When I went for allergy testing, I mentioned this issue that I have with walking/jogging in cold weather, so they ran the test and diagnosed me. I first noticed the problem in middle school. I've had it most often when walking in chilly/cold weather. 10-20 minutes in is when the itching starts, not 24 hours later, so neither of the 2 types of urticaria you mentioned seem to apply to me. It's a maddening itch, mostly on my legs; sometimes on my butt as well. I can't not scratch it either; it is WAAAY too uncomfortable LOL. It actually doesn't even need to be super-cold; anything under about 65 degrees can trigger it. If it's above about 65 I'm fine though; I can walk for hours outside in summer with no itch.
The strange thing is, this only happens during impact/repetitive activities like walking, jogging or running (the faster I go, the worse it seems to be). I've even experienced it when walking on treadmills in air-conditioned gyms (no issue with machines that don't involve impact though, like the elliptical or bikes). I've even gotten itchy arms doing repetitive shuffling around and punching while doing cardio kickboxing in air-conditioned gyms! The non-repetitive/non-impact stuff never causes this response, no matter how cold it is. I used to snowboard in my 20s, and could be outside in single-digit temps for hours at a time, with no problem.
I tried everything - various lotions, all sorts of "anti-itch" products, antihistamines, allergy pills, dressing in layers, etc., nothing worked. I finally quit walking/jogging in cold weather LOL. Which is not easy b/c I live in Connecticut. The last time I tried "taking a walk" in winter was in my late 20s when about 20 minutes in, the itching on my legs started and then I eventually started to feel like I was nauseous and about to faint and fall over in the snow. There was nowhere to sit and I was 20 minutes away from home, alone, so I just had to suffer through and made it home somehow. I remember when I got home I HAD to scratch my legs, and so afterwards I had bright red scratch marks going all up and down my thighs. Looked like I got in a fight w/ a wild animal LOL. I quit walking and jogging (which is even worse) other than in warm weather after that.
One more thing, I recently went on a "vibration plate" in a heavily air-conditioned place and felt the horrible itch in my lower legs and feet. It's weird how it's only vibratory/impact stuff that's repetitive that does it for me. I have had eczema in the winter months too (even when at rest) over my whole body, which must be caused by dry skin b/c as long as I slather lotion on while my skin is still wet after my daily shower, I do not feel itchy. I don't need to do this in summer.
Anyway, my allergist told me that if I do anything like ice fishing, sailing, or skating on a pond, that I should carry an epi-pen with me. B/c of the sudden release of histamines if I get submerged in cold water; I guess I could die. But I don't do any of those things so I'm not too worried LOL. One more thing is I have very fair skin, light eyes, and light hair. I get "red" very easily, and 99% of the time I'm the "lightest" person in the room. I noticed that the 1 or 2 people I have met in person that have said they have experienced anything like this, also have similar coloring. (Most people think I'm nuts when I talk about this LOL). So the only thing I can think of is it may have something to do with the capillaries opening up during these activities, people with sensitive skin that gets "red" very easily are said to have more capillaries I believe?

You can't believe how happy I am to hear about your case. Finally feels good to be not alone in this. I have the exact same symptoms as you. I have very mild hives. I think because my arms are tanned and my torso isn't thats why I can't see the red welts on my arms lol. Im 22 now. I first felt the hives 4 years ago. I have cold urticaria. It starts in October lasts till march I think. I live in pakistan so its pretty hot most of the year but few months are pretty hard. Funny thing is I am regular wim hof method practitioner and calisthenics expert. I wear a half sleeves shirt in 5° and havent worn a jacket or a sweater. I don't have any reaction to the cold. I only feel itching and a little redness on my chest when I suddenly enter a heated room, get stressed or do a strength skill exercise. I now do my training under a fan on full speed even when its 8 or 9° outside. According to my research this is genetic because my dad also had it when he was my age and it gradually went away but he didn't do the extreme stuff i do today so who knows. Anti histamines worked for me today when I had a stress reaction it was fexofenadine 3rd gen 120mg. I love to stay in the ice. It feels great.

@@sarmadsheraz4724 Sounds very interesting, but if you feel great laying in ice and having a fan on you while exercising, it definitely isn't he same as what I have. Cold is a major problem for me and is what causes my symptoms (along with impact/vibratory activity). Ice and fans would make it worse, if anything. Also suddenly entering a heated room isn't a problem for me - it's cold, not heat, that is the problem with cold urticaria. It doesn't sound like you have the symptoms of cold urticaria; were you diagnosed with that? Maybe you have the opposite, some sort of allergy to heat? At any rate, I'm glad you were able to find things that relieve your symptoms, what you have doesn't sound like much fun either. :(

@@jj.1412 Hi thanks for the response. I have heard this theory, too, but I don't really buy it because 1) I get the itchiness/hives when I'm not even sweating (walking in the cold for 10 minutes doesn't make me sweat) and 2) it doesn't happen with certain activities which do make me sweat, such as lifting weights, using an elliptical trainer or exercise bike in an air-conditioned gym. However, walking, jogging, or other impact/vibratory activities in an air-conditioned gym will cause the problem. If it was just a problem of sweat, the activity wouldn't matter.

My allergy is getting more worse now, my whole throat will swell up if i drink cold water, i also have astma making it very harder to breath. Btw I have read somewhere that the symptems can get more and more worse everytime the allergy gets triggered so anyone having it shall avoid it often as possible. I was six months old when my hives first appeared. After a few years of trying to find the cause, they discovered it was cold that I was allergic to. I’m 35 and still have it severely. Hives appear with in a few minutes after exposure and antihistamines work for me. Only rare occasions they haven’t worked and I’ve had to go in and get an allergy shot.

I developed cold urticaria 4yrs ago I was 36yrs old. The night before I was completely unaffected by the cold the next morning my hands started started swelling because the steering wheel was cold. My skin reacts to cold air, cold surface contact and cold water. I was under extreme stress at the time but other than that I am unsure of what else could have triggered this. Luckily my throat doesn't swell but my lips do if I'm eating icecream.

Lauren, thank you so so so much for this. I recently developed cold urticaria and I am 34 :-(. Listening to your story made me realize that I also used to get hives and very uncomfortable itchy legs when I ran outside in high school in the cold... Now, if I am in the cold too long and have just my face and hands exposed, as my skin warms up I develop full body hives and welts. As you know, it's excruciating and scary! I also now experience slight swelling if I drink cold water or eat ice cream. I should note that I started to notice my cold urticaria while living in France where I had significantly increased the amount of dairy, and gluten now that I think about it, that I was consuming. I'm back in the U.S. now but I think it is still getting worse. I had already cut out dairy and the idea makes me sad, but I am going to try significantly cutting back on sugar and gluten. Thank you again so much for making this video for us weirdos allergic to the cold! I have two friends who had this in college and I feel so bad for the times when I laughed at it. I guess this is what I get lol.

Oh Hillary, thank you so much for your sweet comment!! I completely sympathize with you! It can be so hard to deal with, and it's definitely not as simple as many like to say "just bundle up." I'm so sorry to hear that it has been getting worse for you lately. After going through my journey of cutting out dairy and gluten and slowly adding foods back in, I've found that dairy doesn't seem to affect my reactions, but gluten and sugar truly play a huge role. But then ago, I think it's really personal to each individual experiencing cold urticaria. I've spent a lot of time looking into the scarce research we do have, and it does appear that it can go away for some. I'm hanging onto that hope anyways haha, but you'll have to keep me updated if you see any difference from altering your diet! It usually takes me at least a few weeks before I notice any difference.

I love this !!! I am allergic to the cold and heat too. I have had it since I was 4. I really like the idea of taking out gluten and sugar. I live in Colorado where the cold can be harsh but if i move anywhere else i will have the same problem but with the heat . I didn't know that so many people have the same problems as me. I have been looked at so weird when i tell other people why i cant walk home from school they just think that they have it too because they shiver in the cold. I think it is crazy that so many people have cold urticaria and most people don't even know what it is. I mostly get hives on my stomach, hands, neck , and face. Even tho i have it I still feel very lucky that it is not as bad as some people, I only get hives and welts when the temperature changes ( Inside to outside ). It is very comforting to know that there are other people and you are not the only person that cant go outside on really hot or cold days. :) Have an amazing day and thanks for an amazing video.

It’s also preventative you can take it before you go out in cold and won’t develop hives/welts. - HIGHLY RECOMMEND it acts like a natural antihistamine (without the drowsiness).
I will definitely try cutting out sugar and gluten. I have also read the studies that link it to coeliac disease.

I just found out that I have this! In the winter I was just convinced I had really sensitive skin and/or frost nip however, it's summer now just the other day I had a cold water bottle pressed up against my leg for 10 or so minutes and it caused that part of my leg to really swell up a bit which prompted a bit more research into what was happening.
I got it when I was 16 and I'm lucky enough to have a very mild case of it- I don't get it on my face when it's exposed to the cold and I've only ever had it on my legs or ankles if I'm not wearing long enough socks. It's really good to know that there are other people who have this! Thanks for making this video :)

After a lot of testing and observation, it took 2yrs to find the actual reason. Limiting the exposure to cold temperatures, cold objects etc helps me. People find it 'funny' and it's hard to convince them why I wear gloves or sweater even inside home. They say only if u expose yourself to such conditions that ur body overcomes these 🙆🤦‍♀️!!

I'm 43, and this just started happening to me a couple weeks ago. I was holding a canned drink from the fridge with the fingertips of my right hand while talking to a coworker. My fingers started to hurt a little so I switched hands. They kept hurting worse and then got itchy and swollen. My fingers liked like E. T.! Anyway, it went away after about an hour, so I thought it was a weird fluke. Then it happened again and again, and today I had my hand in ice water. That's when I decided I needed to find out what in the world is going on with me. I sure hope this doesn't become a whole thing, because I absolutely love winter and cold weather, backpacking and camping in near freezing temps is one of my favorite activities.

I had hives since 2020. I've never had it in my lifetime before. I even did allergy blood test and Autoimmune test. Everything ok. Just for the food allergy for dairy seems the triggered it. But even if I take dairies I don't get hives due to that because in my lifetime since baby I don't have any food allergy, but yes when aircon cold, or cold wind I can suddenly sometimes developed major urticaria/hives from my face til my legs. All over the body's skin. It's totally itchy pulsated, heat, very uncomfortable. Then I will always take antihistamines tablet and in 40 mins it's disappeared. I also check if there's stress or something as I'm a hypnotherapist but no nothing contributed to it. So it's still a mistery for me. Because sometimes even when I visit cold country, as I'm living in Asia. When I visit Europe in winter season. I don't developed any hives. So it's weird

Many doctors were boggled by it at first until they really started doing research I feel like there is a connection with your histamines in your body being too high so finding things that you are allergic to and try to eliminate it or even food sensitivity which is what we're working on now mine occurred after I had a hepatitis vaccine shortly after is when my cold urticaria arrived and they're wondering if that's what cause the flare-up in my body..
First time I had a allergic reaction to the cold we were stacking wood in Vermont I was 22 I am now 44 still looking for diagnosis and help with the condition sitting at a football game watching my son with hand warmers on my face..
I have read that it can go away as quickly as it appeared hoping that occurs thanks for putting information out there about it there is not a lot of information on this condition at all

Thank you, Katie!! It has been challenging at times to manage, but I'm definitely not discouraged by it ☺️ I would love to visit the New England area some day, while it's warmer outside haha

I found that I have it too and around age 30. The bad part about it is that I work at sonic in Oklahoma and I itch like he'll on my back. It started when I tried to wash my hands in cold water, witch really sucked. I just live with it but I will try your suggestion on the kido diet. Wish me luck.

This is super interesting! I had never heard of this and then I met a patient once in my nursing career who had it. I wish there was more info available about it!

That's so neat that you had the opportunity to encounter it during your career! I definitely wish there was more research on it, but from the reading and searching I have done, there are so many speculations about possible linkages to other conditions that it would be a huge task to truly find a cause. Maybe one day though! Thank you so much for watching and supporting so that this video could be shared with others who might have it!! ❤️❤️

I have cold urticaria and was just diagnosed with Hashimoto's. Because of the Hashimoto's, I am starting to eliminate gluten already, and I know I'm lactose intolerant, but I will see if removing sugar from my diet helps, too! :)

I had a friend in high school who has this problem!! she carried an epi pen with her EVERYWHERE because she was also allergic to salt water so the ocean when it wAS cold was like a death wish

      @laurenweible4584  3 роки тому

Whoa, that's so crazy!!! I'm so thankful I don't need to carry an epi pen! On the coldest days, I always had to be super careful though about spending time outside because my body would just start shutting down and I would start falling asleep without even realizing it. But that was only in the really cold temperatures. I can't imagine also being allergic to salt water!

I have it. Started reacting as a teenager too. And that's really oof in my case because I am.... Canadian... used to winter being here from mid fall to mid spring, if not a bit more. I mean. We are december 5th and it's been temperatures under the freezing point for a while now, and theres a nice blanket of snow out at the moment.
I already barely eat any dairy and gluten, and that did not change. Actually I'm more sensitive now than I was 10 years ago (I'm currently 33). This fall I had my first full body reaction in my appartment because I was feeling a bit hot and had a lighter shirt on (hoodies are life) and I had to take antihistamines. Washing dishes or cooking food in winter can be a challenge depending on the temperature. Of course, always drink room temp water and if I indulge in a frozen dessert it's a small amount or my throat swells.
Even cutting vegetables or fruits that I took out of the fridge makes my hands burn and itch so much. The worst is meat though. I just... I found ways to stop touching it.
The worst reaction I had was... from a dare. My step dad (who never believed much in my cold allergy claims) dared me and some of my cousins to stay 10 mn in the pool in his backyard for 20 bucks. It was in may, it was a nice temperature out but the pool must have been around what, 60? A bit less or a bit more? Freshly filled, like, less than a week ago. I stayed 10 minutes. I was the only one to do it. Then I got out. Full body reaction. I barely remember my mom walking me to her bed and lay multiple blankets on me, I passed out. I was about 21 or 22 years old. I was stupid.
I always get reactions in pools... even if it's like 85 degrees F. (Canada : every temperatures is measures in celcius, except for pools or ovens, we use farenheit. We weird like that. Along with the bagged milk.)

I use petroleum jelly to create a buffer between skin and cold.
Then I use 100% wool clothing on top. Sometimes 2 layers.
Antihistamine before going out and epipen as insurance.
Urticaria sucks but brings out our creativity in dealing with it
