      Try Jewel weed. I have juiced it in the past to cure poison ivy and it works overnight, takes the itch away almost immediately. Just be careful not to over pick your orange jewel weed patch, it has to reseed itself for next year. This is a NA cure, no drugs from the pharmacy needed.

    I'm a CSU/CIU patient and you're the first doctor I've heard who's confirmed my lived experience. Loratadine takes around 30 - 40 mg to actually work on me, and it has pretty intense effects at that dose, so I only take zyrtec and famotadine. Those didn't fully get rid of my symptoms, and after trying steriods and other medications, I've finally been put on xolair. Combined with my current H1 and H2 histamine blockers, I'm finally getting actual relief from my symptoms. I've had an underlying swelling in my throat and lips that hadn't gone away for years, and zyrtec, famotadine, and steriods couldn't touch it.

    My husband has been dealing with terrible hives for two weeks. We have been to the ER twice and to his PCP twice. We have an appointment with the allergist in a few weeks, but he is miserable. We've tried everything. When the Medrol Dose Pack didn't work, they moved him to Prednisone six times daily. It stops it for about 4 hours and then its back. He is afraid this will never go away. Our kids are ready to have their daddy back. Thank you for the video. You are the only one I have found that has made any sense of this!

      Kara, Twice a day dosing is essential. Guidelines also give us room to maneuver and titrate up on the dose. Without seeing your husband in person, it is difficult to advocate further, but there have been times when I see patients with what you describe and I will try them on two full dose zyrtec and two full dose zantac TWICE DAILY of each, just to get this under control.....then I taper off. If he is going to be driving or operating any machinery, then he needs to be careful with the higher doses but when I see how miserable hives can make people feel, I try to do whatever it takes to get it under control. Please keep me informed of his progress. DrJackAllergy

    My doctor put me on ebastine and rupatadine as well as corticosteroids for when the hives get too much... never had any allergies until this year. I had a skin biopsy earlier this year and a blood test to find out whether I was actually allergic to anything and it came out clear. Zyrtec which I was using earlier seemed much more effective. I have also been on an anti-histamine diet for the past 5 months which has been the most stressful thing ever, as I had to cut off entire food groups from my diet. I am no longer doing that as it made me miserable and I think it was truly unhealthy. The greatest trigger for me is exercise (which sadly I had to abandon entirely) and stress. Good luck to everyone else struggling with this, it truly is a nightmare, but lots of patients I talked to say that the hives clear by themselves at some point, so try to think positive! :)

    Thank you very much!! My wife, with no allergies suddenly broke out with hives very badly. First episode, I coated her down with Calamine lotion and got some Benadryl. It helped sooth the itching some and they went away in 2 days. 2nd outbreak was worse. I found your video, ran to the store for the Z and Z you talked about and it shut down the hives totally and quickly (I also put on Calamine lotion). I can't thank you enough. There was a 3rd lesser outbreak a few days later when she quit taking them. She thinks maybe she was taking in too much calcium in supplements that may have triggered it as she has been trying to sort out a reason. She did have some hives as a kid, many years ago. The Z and Z mix was a godsend. It seemed that the Zyrcec was the one that did the job for her. She has been fine since and is now taking nothing.

      David G: I have always found that my "hive" patients are the most grateful when we help them because hives are so irritating not to mention uncomfortable. Just as an FYI, for the future (if the hives return), is to have your wife restart the Z/Z therapy twice daily but do NOT have her stop the medications as soon as the hives go away. A recurrence or flare is very common when patients do this. It is shown to be more effective to taper off the medications slowly, rather than stopping everything all at once. In my own clinic, I recommend the patient stay on the medication until hive-free for 1-2 months (depending how long or how many times they have had hives in the past), and only then do I start my taper. I typically will stop "one pill per week" starting with the Zantac and working my way to zero meds. Studies show that people who get hives once, have an increased risk of hives occurring again at some point in the future. So happy to hear my treatment worked. Please feel free to ask questions at any time and I will try to reply. Dr. Jack Allergy.

    Thank you so much for these informative videos. I’ve been having hives for the past 10 days. I’ve never been allergic to anything. This is the first time I’ve ever had hives. It first appeared as insect bites on my elbows and knees which were very itchy but I didn’t think anything of it until it began to flare up on my chest and back. As of today it’s already affecting my face and they appear all over my body and I’m so scared. I went to a clinic and was given by the doctor Loratadine 10 mg to take once a day plus a steroid shot but I noticed right away that the Loratadine wore off after the 12th hour. She also recommended to start an elimination diet which I have but I’m still getting hives. I didn’t know what was triggering the hives so I began to eliminate things like gluten and dairy... now I know from this video that it might not even be the case. Before that visit, I was taking Benadryl every four hours which really helped but the hive kept coming back. Five days after that visit, I went to the ER because I was experiencing swelling on my lips. The doctor there prescribed a 6 day steroid called Methylprednisolone 4 mg. Is this going to give me a worse reaction after I’m off of it? She said it was okay to take the steroid with the Loratadine and Benadryl, which I usually take 1 every four hours and take 2 at night. I don’t like taking so many pills. :( Even after all this medication I’m still getting hives. I had a bit of swelling on my eyelids tonight so I took another Benadryl. Tomorrow will be my third day on steroids. I’ll complete that treatment since I have already started it and the doctor said it was best to complete it, because steroids shouldn’t be stopped all of a sudden. I will definitely try your ZZ therapy and will take my doses of Benadryl at night. I pray it works. I would be so glad to reduce the amount of Benadryl pills during the day since I won’t be taking Loratadine anymore because it doesn’t help. Thanks again.

      I am on day 2 of switching to your ZZ therapy and I am so much better! I just took 1 dose of Benadryl the first day bc I was feeling some hot spots near my neck after the 8th hour on the first ZZ therapy and I didn’t want to flare up. I took the 2nd dose of ZZ and was able to sleep through the night without waking up to take Benadryl! I woke up free of hives for the first time! Thank you so much, I’m truly grateful for some relief. I haven’t been out and about since having hives and I had even lost some weight because I didn’t know what was triggering the hives but now I feel things are going back to normal. I’ll be checking up with my primary doctor soon and giving her an update. Hopefully this condition is only temporary and we can find a solution to control it. May I ask, what do you normally have your patients do next? Thanks again for your videos! God bless! :)

      @drjackallergy106  6 років тому +2

      Aqua Blue Ocean: Loratadine is a very weakly binding antihistamine. That is why I typically recommend the Zyrtec 10mg and Zantac 150mg combination twice daily. Too often, the medications will wear off at the 12th hour, and that is why getting the second dose into your system BEFORE they wear off is essential. Even if it means putting in a plastic baggy and taking to work with you. Benadryl is safe to add at nighttime when you are really miserable. Nobody likes to take medication(s), but you won't be on these for the rest of your life....and you are miserable now. Don't be afraid to use the meds to calm down the reactions. The swelling is a normal part of this frustrating illness, so please don't fear. There is no truth to the stopping steroids suddenly unless you have been on high doses for 14 days or longer. But start the Z/Z therapy twice daily until you finish the methylpred (aka.. Medrol Dosepak) then continue the twice daily Z/Z therapy. Hope this helps. DrJackAllergy

      DrJack Allergy, I’ve on the ZZ therapy since 6/26/18. It’s been helping me with the hives but I’ve been feeling a burning sensation in the back of my throat sort of itchy too. Is that normal? I take both Zyrtec and Zantac at the same time twice a day (8am/7pm), should I first take one then wait to take the other? Please help, it’s a very disturbing feeling especially at night. Thanks!

    • @drjackallergy106
      @drjackallergy106  6 років тому +2

      The symptoms you describe might be related, but they also might not be. It might be of benefit to have an allergy specialist see you to ensure that the burning/itchy sensation in the throat is not a sign of something more serious. As far as dosing or taking the medications, there is no absolute right or wrong way to take them. The goal is to provide relief to the patient, with the hope that over time, the hives will simply regress or burn out. Taking the meds at a bit of a stagger is fine, it just tends to be a bit more inconvenient which increases the risk of missing doses. Hope this helps, DrJackAllergy

    Thank you so much!!! Two days of prednisone and I am worse than ever!! You knocked it out of the park for me Dr. Jack. I did the ZZ for three days, the hives went away after day one so I stopped the fourth day. Biggest mistake ever. I immediately went back on ZZ with Benadryl at bedtime and the hives are constantly breaking through. I never know what is going to start swelling, this morning it is the right side of my face with a closed eye =( It seems the meds last 6 hours. Is there anything else I can take or do? My doctor is stumped and referred me to an allergist, that appointment isn't until July 30th....I don't know how I will even want to live until then. And I am frozen, total frozen, body temp drops down to 95, and I hate being cold!!!

      Melissa, sorry to hear of the stop and start of the hives, but I have found that more often than not, abrupt cessation of the medications triggers flares, such as yours. For a couple of days you might want to double your dose of both medications until you get the hives and swelling under control. I would caution about driving or operating heavy machinery due to possible drowsy side effects, but this is what I would try in order to avoid the dreaded prednisone burst. DrJackAllergy

      LOL, my PCP gave me prednisone..10mg once a day....ended up in the ER....where they tripled the dose...which tripled the hives and left me standing in the shower for 3 hours crying! Went back on your ZZ and wishing I had ProZac to add to your Z's!! Finally got it calmed down enough to function, most days. But the flares are unbearable. Would it be better to double up, or take it every 6 hours? I know when the buggers are coming, my body shakes from being so cold. Thank you very much!

The first 2 times it only 3 weeks and I was fine. But now it's been 6 weeks. I've had tongue swelling,Face swelling, lip swelling, eyes, feet, hands, joint swelling, you name it, it swells. I've been to allergist 3 times, they don't know. I pray someone can help...

    Dr. Jack, my daughter has been on the ZZ treatment for 3 weeks. 10mg zyrtec, 5 mg of allegra and 5ml of Zantac - morning and night. Her hives have yet to subside. We've been told that Singular can be effective but she is only 3.5 years old and we are hesitant to put her on those meds. What are your thoughts. they suggested injections but they said we can't do that until she is 6. We've also looked at aryuvedic/homeopathic options and are willing to consider eastern medicine. What would you suggest for us. What are your thoughts on Singular for young kids. thanks for this video!

    Thank you for your videos and advice. I suddenly broke out in hives with lip swelling in December- end February 2020, and visited local doctors who prescribed prednisone and anti-allergy meds. Prednisone made my face swell and symptoms persisted.
    After watching your videos we increased the dosage of the anti-allergy meds and the hives finally subsided. We are still not sure what caused the hives but traced patterns of allergic reactions to sulphite foods and drinks and certain pain medications.

    I went to the doctor for extreme itching of my hands and feet that took over my body which i did not notice I was having hives and I’ve learned more from you, then the hour I spent with my doctor. Who just gave me steroids and topical cream😑 saying we can only treat the symptoms unless I do tons of test.

      DrJack Allergy I went to walgreens and bought Zyrtec because i made the mistake of taking Benadryl before class and oh my that was the worse, I almost got whiplash from dozing off.

    • @drjackallergy106
      @drjackallergy106  6 років тому +3

      Mahriyah: I am sorry to hear about your experience with benadryl. I don't like benadryl for two reasons, (1) it is short acting and you have to take it every 4-6 hours to maintain control [most people forget to take until the itching or hives return and they spend a lot of time chasing their tail to stay ahead of the hives], and (2) is the drowsy side effect. People can't take benadryl during the day ad be productive. That is why the zyrtec/zantac combo is safer and effective, although zyrtec can cause a little drowsiness it is nothing like benadryl. It is safe, though, to take 1-2 benadryl tablets at bedtime if you start to itch (hives tend to worsen at nighttime) in addition to the regular zyrtec/zantac combo for breakthrough nighttime itch/discomfort. Please keep me informed.

    • @drjackallergy106
      @drjackallergy106  6 років тому +3

      Urticaria/Hives do not necessarily mean you are allergic, rather they are a reaction that involves the release of the exact same mediators (histamine and others) that occur in allergies or an allergic reaction. With that being said, uncontrolled itchy skin leads to painful scratching and even skin damage (scarring). Using topical creams is not effective as the reaction is taking place inside your body and manifested on the outside (skin). Therefore, topical therapy should only be used for "spot" treatment but to gain effective control, you need to be on an aggressive but safe regimen. By the time I see patients in my clinic with hives, they have been through the ringer and tried multiple treatments, but none are terribly effective except oral steroids which only last for a little while and have tons of side effects (short and long term). The basic treatment approach I start with is: Cetirizine (generic Zyrtec) 10mg one tablet by mouth in the morning and one tablet by mouth in the evening. I also add the H2-receptor blocker Ranitidine (generic Zantac) 150mg one tablet by mouth in the morning and one tablet by mouth in the evening. So, one Cetirizine and one Zantac together in the morning and then again in the evening. The treatment is safe, effective, and you will NOT be on this for the rest of your life. Once you gain control and hive-free for a couple months, I will taper my patients off this regimen. But the goal is to find a regimen that works for each individual patient. Hope this helps......let me know. There are also other options, including very low dose Cyclosporine with monitoring, the addition of Dapsone, and the use of monoclonal antibody injections. All of these can be added individually and sometimes cumulatively to obtain better control. Please don't give up, there really are good treatments and good providers. Please keep me updated.....DrJackAllergy

    I haven’t suffered from hives for 8 years. I took a 20 mg prednisone and it worked. When the hives returned, I took another 20mg prednisone. It got worse! I went to City MD Urgent Care. I received two shots one of which was 125mg of prednisone. The treatment worked for 8 hours and then got even worse and began to spread. I told my Mom I was going to try your ZZ treatment. Within 30 minutes, the hives began to fade. In 45 minutes, they were gone. You also, some how, made my constant asthma go away. My asthma had gotten to the point the doctors were trying everything (Advair, Symbicort, Prednisone, etc.). I was going through 1 emergency inhaler every two weeks. Since I started your treatment, I only use it 3 times a day. I can’t thank you enough! God bless you and please keep your videos coming!

    Thank you for this series of videos; these have been the most informative I have seen to date. I have generally had sensitive skin, having to use dye and fragrant free detergent for a while, and occasionally getting hives on my feet (usually after they got wet). A few years ago during the winter I began waking up with terribly itchy and burning hives almost all over my body (usually on torso, sides, and head; and at times on my legs. I stayed on Zyrtec for a while, after doctor put my on steroids to calm things down. Occasionally I would get small spots of hives plus angeodema if i forgot to take zyrtec, but nothing serious until tonight when I woke up once again (this time in the summer) with the worst outbreak of burning, itching hives all over and constricted breathing. I wondered if it could be cold urticaria, since it seemed more common in winter, or when I was in a walk in freezer for a while (I worked in a bakery for the last 7 years). I know I need to get to see an allergist, but last time I tried, they said I had to be hive free and off allergy medication for a period of time; but the problem is, the allergy medication keeps the hives from happening! Is there anything you can suggest? I apologize for the wall of text; I have been dealing with this for a while now and it seems like you could help :)

    • @drjackallergy106
      @drjackallergy106  6 років тому +3

      Jeremy: Cold Urticaria is definitely a possibility, but it also seems like you had the most serious outbreak just recently, in the warmer weather. Personally, I do not subscribe to the notion of testing any hives patient nor do I eve want them to stop their controller medications prior to seeing me. Why would I do any testing on someone who already has hyper-reactive skin?? Plus, the allergy specialist could also order allergy specific labs (blood work) rather than skin testing, so I think this specialist might have been after the almighty dollar more than helping you. At the end of my note, I am attaching a link to a brief but very informative way to test for "cold urticaria." Just know that urticaria can also be associated with another condition known as "dermatographism" which you might have due to the very reactive and sensitive skin. The angioedema part of it is a little more concerning, so it would probably be a good idea to see an allergy specialist who can perform some more specific testing for angioedema, and if nothing else, to rule out rare but significant disease of Hereditary or Acquired Angioedema. I would recommend adding the Zantac for a more effective H2-blockade in addition to the Zyrtec.DrJackAllergy

      Yhen: I completely understand your discomfort, but as I am sure you fully understand, physicians are incredibly cautious in treating pregnant women with medications, especially when you are so close to your due date. My recommendation is for you to switch to generic zyrtec (aka Cetirizine) and take one full tablet in the morning and start by using 1/2 tablet in the evening. If still with issues, you can bump it up to one tablet morning and one tablet at night. Please be safe and avoid using any Allegra or Fexofenadine, as this is not safe in pregnancy. DrJackAllergy

When he saw the online doctor he did not have these moving lumps only a rash. I fear these lumps are going to his brain.

    Five years ago I was diagnosed with chronic Urticaria and it wouldn’t go away. I went to see an allergist and dermatologist about it and they had tried multiple prescriptions to see which ones would help with my chronic hives and then it was drawn down to taking ceterizine, radinitine, and singular. And I took them two per day and it actually helped my hives. Then I got off of singular and just took both certerizine and radinitine for awhile and it all of a sudden went away on its own. Now that it’s coming back I know how to attack the hives much better.

      Ryan: Your experience(s) are a common thread of what I see in my clinic. Cetirizine and Ranitidine are the initial twice daily medications I use, and depending on how long the patient has had symptoms or how uncomfortable the patient is, I will then add Singulair (Montelukast) once daily in addition to the other medications. Fortunately, chronic urticaria does spontaneously go away over a period of time; some patients have resolution quickly while others experience chronic urticaria for years with outbreaks occurring at various times. The guidelines for the treatment of chronic idiopathic urticaria includes even higher doses of oral H1 antihistamines (eg.. Cetirizine) to control symptoms. Fortunately, there are many other treatments that can be added to gain improved control. I would strongly recommend that you speak with your allergist or primary care provider to investigate your chronic idiopathic urticaria with specific labs including checking the thyroid (including anti-thyroid antibodies), a sedimentation rate, and an Anti-Nuclear Antibody (ANA) screen, if your urticaria/hives are returning. Hope this helps......let me know what you find.

    I really wish I could like this video 40 billion times. I resently went to urgent care for my hives because I haven't been able to sleep at all with them. I've been known to break out in the past (once a year maybe - along with the swelling lip though it hit both sides but only the upper lip). Anyways he gave me two steroids, oral and topical. The oral doesn't seem to be working at all but I only have three days worth and they want me to take it in the morning. Boo hiss. And like you said tiny tube of the topical, it's almost gone. They said it's supposed to last the week. Again, not working. So tomorrow I'm going to buy what you said and give it a shot on the day I no longer will have the oral steroids (I want to be positive that the oral doesn't work at all and/or won't interact with the other pills. Also, what's your take on using aloe gel as a topical treatment? It kinda works like a cold compress, and what's your take on those as well?

    This is very helpful. My hives comes on night time, and in the morning. They don't stay very long but it comes and go. I used gold bond eczema. I was prescribe valocylovir 1gram a day. This seems like doesn't help at all. Like what you said I do take benadryl also and it does help. Now that I found your site and would try those allergy medicines thank you so much.

    This video popped out 6 yes later when I needed most. Whatever this doctor said about the types of medicine was pretty spot on, especially about the steroid. It does not do u any good. After i finished one round of steroid (with minor side effect-put on weight and anxiety), the hives came back again in 2 weeks. I don’t trust the GP anymore and decided to seek advice from a skin doctor. The skin doctor was upset that I was given steroid by the GP. he said the GP should not have given me steroids without trying out all the possible anti-histamine pills. Steroid should be the last resort on earth. Period!
