one of Australia's best pub band. I remember rocking up to a pub in the 90's, going in to see the angles playing away. This was when everyone knew them and they could sell out anywhere. They never forgot their roots.
Hi Guys. I live in Sydney and recently saw a young Aussie cover band playing The Angels . . the were unbelievable! . . I walked into an RSL club and heard The Angels song 'Marseilles' playing in the background. Thinking is was just background music, a friend said come and have a look in the auditorium - there they were exact replicas and sounding exactly the same. We danced all night and I did my knee towards the end.
Doc was a bundle of energy on stage and a prolific climber. He'd climb speaker stacks, lighting rigs, a stage manager's nightmare, but a brilliant frontman.
I saw The Angels in 1987 at the Australia Made festival at Thebarton Oval here in Adelaide. Doc was all over the stage scaffolding like a freakin monkey!
Rick Brewster (guitar) once said in an interview that he "learned early on to stand absolutely still on stage because I had no idea where Doc was going to go. Neither did Doc." Other Angels track worth checking out - "Who Rings The Bell," "I Ain't The One," "Mr Damage," "Beyond Salvation,." If going with live videos then I recommend the shows from the 70's & 80's when the band was fully firing, young, passionate, hungry.
I seen the Angels many many times in the 80’s and burned some calories jumping up and down to their energetic tunes. We even had a 6 pack of beer hanging from our beach pants pockets so we didn’t have to miss any second of the gig. Ahhh the memories 🤘
Easily my favourite band at the time - worldwide. Take me away to Marseille, Take a long line, Am I ever gonna see your face again, Dogs are talking, Comin' down on me etc
The Angels were my favourite band in the late 70's. Their albums "Face to Face" and "No Exit" were all the rage here in Oz. I remember seeing them on the Sydney Opera house steps for the 2SM Rocktober Concert in 1978. Fantastic band.
The first time I saw The Angels they were supporting David Bowie at the MCG. 1978. They were brilliant. I walked about five miles the next day to buy their album Face To Face. Fantastic album.
I saw them supporting David Bowie at MCG, back in the day. It was raining but they put on such an energetic and amazing show. Ah, those were the days. 🥰
So glad you got to see this clip from Narara. Doc & Peter Garrett from Midnight oil certainly own the on stage dancing awards... :) The Angels were originally from (r)Adelaide but hit Sydney like a cyclone around 78 and owned the pub scene here at the time. Always a good time.
As a teen, growing up in Melbourne. The Angels made me realise that Aussie music, was as good as anything being dished up from anywhere else in the world. So glad I’ve been able to listen to them for over 40 years now.
The full tilt banger from The Angels was Take A Long Line. Also noteworthy were: No Secrets Shadow Boxer Marseille Comin’ Down Look The Other Way Between The Eyes Sticky Little Bitch and they did a pretty good cover of The Animals’ We’ve Gotta Get Out Of This Place. As for After The Rain (which is my second favourite of theirs), it was apparently about the Holocaust, referencing it in lines like “Who took the gold from their teeth? Who takes the ancient masterpiece?” and “Who knows who’s star has fallen?” a reference to the Star Of David. Although some of their lyrics were simple, there were often much deeper and more interesting concepts in there for the fans who were able to look beyond the awesome power of the rhythm section.
This was at a festival at Narara in 1982, they came on about 9pm on the final night. I was there with 1000s of others, they were the highlight of the 3 days the entire performance was filmed.
Cranked it up and bouncing around the living room screaming "Save Me! The Water's Rising!" -just like I did back in '82.🤣 Last saw The Angels with AC/DC at the Myer Music Bowl in the early 80's and you took me straight back there.
@@TheThamesmen thanks for the reply. Yeah, I’d take Radiohead! But it was a brilliant time. Within ten minutes drive from home I saw (multiple times) Icehouse (Flowers), Cold Chisel, INXS, Hunters & Collectors, The Church, Midnight Oil, Hoodoo Gurus, Mi-Sex, Mental as Anything, The Models, Australian Crawl, The Divinyls, The Radiators plus a list of others long enough to ensure tinnitus set in and never left. 😀
Doc had a manic stage presence; an amazing frontman who gave 100% every time. He had a bad car accident in 1999 and ultimately developed brain cancer, which took his life in 2014. It was so sad to see his gradual demise. Eat City is another excellent Angels track and my personal favourite; would love to see you react to it.
Guys, you have to do The Angels "Take A Long Line"....their biggest hit and an absolute banger! Riff city! You're right, the 80's (and the late 70's) in Australia was insane....such a great era!
Saw these guys over 20 times as a teenager and in my early 20’s. First time was at the Bridgeway in Adelaide. Off to see them again this October again at the Bridgeway. Minus Doc of course😢
Hi guys, it's Michael from Australia here. I saw The angels do a gig on the Australian Gold Coast when I was 18. A long time ago. A friend of mine new Doc. After the gig, Doc came over and spoke to all my friends as though he had known us. A brilliant front man and a great guy. I miss him.
George and Alex, thanks for playing another classic Angels song. The next 5 songs of theirs, in no particular order, could be Marseille, No Secrets, Fashion and Fame, Shadow Boxer & Long Line. I promise not to mention the band that starts with a W. Really. Doc was a doing acting at Uni, so all that came through in his performance. No lip synching so you could get the dance steps right, either.
I saw two Angels a few weeks ago touring Australia with Cheap Trick at the Enmore Theatre. I think there are only two original Angels left, but they were great
I shouldn't tell you this... but in 1981, the Angels played the Uni bar in Tassie. I went along... and a 'friend' who was 5 foot couldn't see the stage. I put her on my shoulders and we both watched the Angels!. 40 years later, we reunited. But 41 years later, we saw The Angels at The Longley International Hotel in Southern Tasmania... and I got a 'naughty' that I enjoyed 40 years ago!!! Thank you Angels!!!!! That was awesome!!!
Too good fellas! Back in those days if you turned up to a battle of the bands night at a suburban pub in Sydney without Marshall amps they'd toss you out on the street. Young babes getting taught to play guitar didn't start with scales, they learnt to play that chunk-a-chunk-a riff at the start of songs like this. Love your work!
Totally my all time favourite Angels song guys so TY, many go for their huge hits which are brilliant but for me i like some that may have never been huge hits. This one and "Dogs Are Talking" another all time fantastic Angels song. Add that to your future Angels plays. TY for delving back to them, and as you said really your only starting to get into our music scene, so many more to look at and i am sure my aussie mates will pile on the requests to help you on your way. And RIP "Doc" miss you mate Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘🎶🎶🎶🎶💖💖💖💖
First gig I ever went to. The Angels at Brisbane's Festival Hall in early 81 I think. Had the classic lineup on the No Secrets tour, so still with Chris Bailey and Buzz Bidstrup before their exit to Gang Gajang. I was 16 and deaf for days.
Yeeeeah! Always high excitement when you were going to see The Angels . You knew it was going to kick ass, you knew Doc would bounce around the stage like an unhinged 'Zebedee' (not sure who'll get that reference but it pleases me, so it's staying in), you knew exactly what to expect and that was a fan 'f*****g' tastic night. Love the intro competition idea. Thanks so much boys. ❤
Seen many an Angels show in Adelaide include a concert at Memorial Drive Tennis Stadium where they fronted for AC/DC, the Doc was in fine form climbing the 6 meter speaker stacks with one foot on the stage roof belting out am I ever gonna see you face again… One of my high energy favorites is Mr Damage on one of their live recorded shows, should check that one out… keep up the great work lads…
Saw The Angels, ZZ Top and Rose Tattoo on the Gold Coast in the late 80s. Brilliant concert, Doc was mesmerizing. This was the first song I learnt on the guitar.
Maybe it's me, because of my own exposure to Angels but the Latrobe University concert represents the best of the band on UA-cam. Original line-up, pure Angels.
These guys played a lunchtime concert at our high school in Adelaide. Must have been late 70’s…. They were then known as The Keystone Angels. Been a fan ever since.
Originally 'The Keystone Angels', founded in the suburb I grew up in - Taperoo. John Brewster comes to my work often. He's proud of what they achieved everytime we speak. More Angels please.
I saw them in concert once in 89 with James Morley on bass and Bob Spencer on guitar. In 99 with full classic (Neeson, Brewster, brewster, HIlbun, Eccles) lineup. Opriginal Angels Band (Brewster, Brewster, Bidstrup, Bailey), and also the Brewster Brothers. Each time was brilliant.
So true about 80s Australia. I simply didn't listen to bands from anywhere but OZ in the 80s because i didn't need to. So right about The Angels discography too but that is the same for all those Aussie pub bands. They have a couple decades of great songs.
It was GREAT living in Sydney Australia late 70's early 80's. The local pub in Surry Hills - 2 minute walk, every weekend either Cold Chisel, Divinyls, Paul Kelly and the Dots or Paul Kelly and the Coloured girls, Hoodoo gurus etc etc - I can't remember seeing Angels at the local but a short walk to the Cross or to Bondi Lifesavers and the Angels were there. I don't know if I miss the music or miss being 19 again. Lol. Those were the days. Pub Rock Ruled.
What is it about 6 foot 4' aussie lead singers that make them look so unhinged up there on stage. Oh to have Doc and Peter Garett on the same stage going off - what a sight!! Marseilles, Take a long line , Shadow Boxer , the numerous classic tracks are just timeless.
This is from the Narrara '83 concert. The Angles had recently from a failed attempt to crack the American market. This was going to be their last gig with Doc Neeson up front. He was going to peruse a career in acting. They just killed it. Doc decided to stay and the rest is history. Doc is one of rock's great front men for sure!
Angels video starts 6:49 Whole show ‘Live at Narara’ (1983) is on UA-cam. Brilliant to watch. Doc was at his absolute prime early 80’s. RIP Doc. We miss you.
Awesome song choice 👍I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again Doc is right up there with Freddie as on of the greatest front men of all time greatest part of being a teenager in the eighties going to the pub on a Saturday night and having a front row seat to Doc and the Angels (and all the other great Australian pub bands )
Doc was 6' 4", and a former Army Sargeant in the Aussie Army so he could take care of Mamma Cass. The Angels were as good a live band that you could see in the latest seventies. Went from hillbilly music to outright punk and Aussie heavy rock. They were huge! They were taken up by George Young and Harry Vanda and couldda shouhda been as big as ACDC. Not to be. A side note, I played in an Angels tribute for 19 years and now an ACDC tribute show for 13 years with a bit of cross fertilisation for about six years . If I had to put together a combined Angels and ACDC 20 song set there would be 11 Angels and 9 ACDC songs they are that good. A killer set that would be!
I'm likely to have seen them about 50 times over the years , including quite a few times over the last few years. Not as dynamic as they once were but still very good.
I saw them a heap of times in the 80's, the best gig I ever saw was a double bill with them and Cheap Trick at Festival hall Melbourne circa 1988. Two of my favourite bands on the same night, was a great night and like all great nights I have no memory of getting home.
You might want to check out a documentary on the Angels called “kicking down the doors’. That came out this year., 11:56 Doc was conscripted in 1968 for the Vietnam war. Luckily he was picked to open a school in New Guinea the Australian army was running. Instead of going with his battalion to Vietnam in 1969.
The Angels had great song after great song after great song. They gave it their all. Doc was one of the best front men of all time. Marseilles is a corka. Definitely need to check that out and Back street pick up. I don't think anyone has reacted to back street pick up yet. Gents you might be the first. 🤞. Cheers! 🍻
Saw them many times. Doc Neeson was stunning. I saw them at Brisbane's Festival Hall where Doc climbed the speaker stack while singing before leaping off onto the stage. These days the Health & Safety manual would burst into flames if someone did that.
The Angels were as big as the ACDC pre 1980. This song was from 1978 btw.
one of Australia's best pub band. I remember rocking up to a pub in the 90's, going in to see the angles playing away. This was when everyone knew them and they could sell out anywhere. They never forgot their roots.

I saw The Angels in 1987 at the Australia Made festival at Thebarton Oval here in Adelaide. Doc was all over the stage scaffolding like a freakin monkey!
Same at the Newcastle Earthquake concert. He was virtually hanging from the roof of the outdoor stage cover.
And that was just this show😂
Well...there goes the core matter of my comment, mate. The first thing that came to mind. Man could climb for sure...
When I was a teenager I thought Rick Brewster was the coolest dude on the planet. I still do.
Woohooo The Angels! Saw them in the early 80’s as a pub band. RIP Doc Neeson 😔❤️🇦🇺

I saw them a heap of times in the 80's, the best gig I ever saw was a double bill with them and Cheap Trick at Festival hall Melbourne circa 1988. Two of my favourite bands on the same night, was a great night and like all great nights I have no memory of getting home.
Saw the angel's 3 times in the 70's one of Australia's best bands maybe the best.
Doc Neeson was the original fire starter, the Ridgeway Hotel early 90s, good times.
Wow. Cheers Alex
My favourite Angles song is No Secrets it means a lot to me.
The Angels had great song after great song after great song. They gave it their all. Doc was one of the best front men of all time. Marseilles is a corka. Definitely need to check that out and Back street pick up. I don't think anyone has reacted to back street pick up yet. Gents you might be the first. 🤞. Cheers! 🍻
Could you imagine Doc Neeson and Peter Garrett on stage together, they would be jumping over each other.
Saw them at a festival in Berri on the Murray river, they were the Keystone Angels then. They rocked hard.
Saw them many times. Doc Neeson was stunning. I saw them at Brisbane's Festival Hall where Doc climbed the speaker stack while singing before leaping off onto the stage. These days the Health & Safety manual would burst into flames if someone did that.
