Railway Photography - Kirkham Abbey - Class 68 Transpennine - Train Photography

- Join me on a Train & Railway photography outing to Kirkham Abbey on the York- Scarborough railway line, getting in some train photography of Transpennine Class 68 locomotives at Kirkham, and Howsham Crossing the days adventure starting at Kirkham Abbey Signal Box, visiting railway locations along the misty River Derwent.
The misty December day was perfect for getting out, the wet ground did cause me some problems at Howsham Crossing, getting stuck in the mud.
I’m proud to be a member of the Phoenix Railway Photographic circle and equally honoured to be awarded ‘Photographer of the year’ in this anniversary year.
2021 represents a significant milestone in the history of the Phoenix Railway-Photographic Circle with the celebration of our 50th anniversary. Phoenix was set up in spring 1971 and was created to promote an alternative approach to railway photography.

What a trooper, car firmly stuck in the mud, but still thinking about the 68.
Thank you, Peter, it was a little frustrating to say the least as I’d wanted to try a few shots around that crossing, another trip beckons when we’re free.
Nice one Andy, what a nightmare for you getting your car stuck.......more entertaining than the 68s.
Thanks Eddie, what a nightmare indeed I was on the verge of phoning the AA, it was more frustrating that I was missing all the shots I’d planned, it all adds a bit of drama to the day.
I've just come back from a camping holiday at castle Howard. We spent an afternoon swimming in the river derwent at Kirkham Abbey. My nephew loves trains so enjoyed watching these come through. When I got home I did a search for him on here and found your video. It's a lovely video and I've enjoyed watching quite a few of your others. Well done! Thanks for the videos
Thanks Ron, I made a return visit at the weekend and what a difference to December, lots of activity around the river at Kirkham, it's a stunning part of the world to spend an afternoon.
That's a really nice video, a beautiful countryside and a "so british" atmosphere with this (almost) dark light and rainy weather. and of course with tipycally and nice trains. Good job.
Glad you enjoyed it, this is a lovely part of the county, not the weather I had hoped for, but it was winter. I’m planning to re-visit in the summer as a comparison.
Really enjoyed that but most of all, amazed by the coincidence of me spotting this having been looking at that stretch of line for photo spots only earlier on today, excellent.
Excellent, Peter, well that is some coincidence. Its a great stretch of line and I have every intention of returning soon, I count get the longer distance shots that I wanted with the mist, I fancy getting there soon before it turns too green for the summer, but also an autumn visit when the trees have turned.
Been binge watching all your videos since discovering your channel a couple of days ago Andrew. Really enjoying them, the trials and tribulations and showing the times it doesn't go quite to plan is refreshing to see. Really appreciate the effort that must go into these videos and the end photos. Keep up the good work.

Thanks, Robert, I'm pleased you found it entertaining, I had a great day and I'd no idea how the mud episode might have turned out. There isn't a shortage of vantage points in this short section and I will return, hopefully in the spring.
Saw the point about the focusing, its a nightmare in auto. Was up Blea Moor one time and thought about going manual as the rain was coming down on the portal exit to the tunnel. Could not get it to focus. Had a brief break in the weather and shot the loco in auto; lucky break. The quality of these videos is fantastic. Real documentary material. The editing is good, music is just right and at the right volume going up and down when you comment on something. Super work again. That last picture of the 68 going through the level crossing was spot on. I am beginning to see what you are doing in the processing; now.
Cheers, Keith, yes going manual limits the amount of compositions you can get of a train, but its probably worth it when there’s a risk of coming away with nothing. I’m really pleased what you say about the videos, I’m no expert, just fumbling my way along.

Really enjoying these video's, after seeing your NE viaduct one I decided to watch them from the start, as a few other people have said they are very well presented and put together, keep up the great work and I can't wait to see the rest of them.
PS - next time you want to film from a narrow footpath on a bridge in the dark it might be safer wearing a different colour coat and trousers to black 🙂

Hi Andrew, OMG this was both brilliant and hilarious. The mist over the River Derwent was glorious. The results were spectacular. But your driving skills, not so much!!! For some strange reason, the character of Unlucky Alf from the Fast Show comedy series flashed through my brain. And when you said "I am buggered", I just about lost it. (For the uninitiated, Unlucky Alf always ended his skits with "Oh Bugger!") I really, really enjoy your videos both for the brilliant photography, but also for the way you present it. Cheers, Ian.
Excellent, Ian, many thanks for that, I'm still living with that trip, yes I was buggered - those rugs that I used were my wife's - best was to describe it - she wasn't best pleased! I really appreciate you comment, that day was quite the adventure.

Thanks for the videos Andrew, I have only just discovered you, and am binge watching!! this one in particular has brought back memories of chasing the Scarborough Spa Expresses during the 80s. Kirkham Abbey was one of my go to places… particularly a field across the river that put the Abbey ruins in the background. I haven’t photographed for years and all my kit is out of date now (pre-digital) so not cheap to get going again unfortunately, as much as I would like to!! Sorry to see you plight…. Very brave to video it!!!!

Just watched this one Andrew! Hilarious, just don’t know where you find the patience. But credit to you: in the face of adversity - gotta get the train! I’ve been in similar pickles myself but have not always recovered as well as you. Another great production, thank you!

Fantastic video with some amazing images. You found some tremendous locations there. If I had to pick a favourite image, I’d say the final one of the 68 after dark at Kirkham is simply amazing. A really entertaining watch:-)
Thanks Simon, that’s great I’m really pleased you’re enjoying the videos, it a smashing location and I intend to go back in different conditions, there’s a couple more spots closer to Malton I wanted to try. The last image is my favourite too, I was pleased the two cars arrived giving that extra bit of illumination.

Thanks so much, the mud episode was rather frustrating at the time but I'm glad I recorded it, you never actually know how these events will turn out, there's no rehearsal, I could have just come straight out in one go, which secretly is what I wanted. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Blimey, that really was quite the adventure! I hope you didn't get into too much trouble about those blankets... Beautiful shots though. The fog really lends a painterly quality to the scenes.

The car incident shows how easy wet mud can just take you away,luckily it was flat and not a drop,personally know how easy that is from family experience on the A65!
Thanks Rob, I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos, the wet grass/ mud is deceptive, just that slight incline mad it impossible to get going- lessons learnt.
Another really interesting video Andrew , felt for you when stuck in that mud , some great shots to compensate though.
Thanks, Marcus, there was a worry I might be stuck for some time, which was frustrating as I'd a few more shots planned, anyway I did get a pleasing number of shots in the end and the mud did make it a memorable day out- my wife still hasn't forgiven me for the blankets though.

Thank you for subscribing, that’s really appreciated. I’m pleased you enjoy the photographs, I’m using the channel to show what goes on to actually get some of these shots. As for the blankets, they’ve been soaked, washed, washed and washed again all by my fair hands👍.
The Scarborough line iv been down a number of times in recent years including twice this year, however iv only ever been down it behind steam locomotives.

The York Scarborough line is something special , especially around Kirkham Abbey, I intend to get back hopefully in time to catch the last of this years autumn colours
Did your better half mention the blankets and what was your penance ?
I think I'm forgiven now, they are washed cleaned and back in the car.
Hi Andrew, I've been doing railway photography for about a year now, i currently shoot in TV mode, would it be worth switching to full manual thanks
Many thanks, I guess its down to personal preference, TV mode is great to ensure you have a fast enough shutter speed to 'stop' the train and the camera takes care of everything else. I prefer manual mode as I like to chose the other settings depending upon the scene/location and situation.
