Im 24 and have lived with economic inflation all my life, so to me it is "normal" for prices to double or triple in the span of a short couple years, if not less. To think of living in a place where prices stay about the same and you dont always feel like everything is always so expensive seems crazy to me, because this has always been my life. Even if you're middle class and have a decent life you always feel like the country's economy is constantly on fire and things could go awful bad any minute.
At this point honestly I dont even care about "stopping inflation", I don't bother to try and understand the root cause of our economic problems because it all seems so complex and prevalent it feels like its no use. I know Argentina quite well, or at least I can say I know it well compared to the average European. The problem of inflation has been there for a very long time, and the only one who had somehow managed to stop it was the economy minister of the Menem government in the 1990s, namely Domigo Cavallo. However, he had solved it with a forced peso/dollar parity, which destroyed the country's economy and led to its default in the early 2000s. So a cure worse than the disease, and if I mention this person many Argentines will have unpleasant memories.
I have come to the conclusion that the inflation problem in Argentina is also due to psychological factors. In my opinion in Argentina there is a sort of disconnection between the true value of things and their price. Even here in Europe (and in Italy) this year we have had an inflation we haven't seen for a long time, but if I go to the supermarket I know more or less how much apples must cost, and if someone tries to sell them to me at €5 a kilo I'll leave them on the shelf (in Italy a normal variety of apple never costs more than €2 a kilo). I have the impression that this has been lost in Argentina, because when inflation becomes endemic you end up accepting everything. And so inflation practically feeds itself. And I am not saying that this is the only cause, but one of the main perhaps yes.
You tell me (especially people from Argentina) if I have said something right or wrong. Thanks!

    • @let0atreides
      @let0atreides 2 роки тому +40

One of many reasons Europe has low inflation is due to demographics and age pyramid. The majority of retired people do not consume as much, therefore it's easier to control the demand side of inflation. That in turn brings many other problems: how to grow the economy with old people, who will pay for retirement of all those people and so on. Argentina on the other hand has a very healthy age pyramid with a ton of young people and children. They consume and spend, so demand remains always strong.

Argentina has a history of high inflation due to various factors such as political instability, excessive government spending, and monetary policy mismanagement. The government has a history of printing money to finance its spending, which leads to an increase in the money supply and a decrease in the value of the currency, causing inflation. Additionally, the country has experienced frequent devaluations of its currency, which also contributes to inflation by increasing the cost of imported goods. Political instability and uncertainty can also lead to inflation, as investors become less willing to invest in the country, causing a decrease in foreign investment and a decrease in the value of the currency.

The fact that the federal reserve note is the world reserve currency means the United States, particularly the US government, directly benefits whenever there is a currency crisis in other nations.
This is because people start exchanging their local currency for dollars thus creating an artificial demand on the supply of dollars. That artificially increases the value of US currency and lowers inflation in America.

Yes, the official "gov" rate is 185 ARS but, when you buy dollars in Argentina from a National bank (IF YOU'RE EVEN ELIGIBLE FOR THAT), this is, legally and rightfully you get taxed by the government with a 35% and a 40% tax so in total a 75% more money for taxes.
Let's say you buy 5,40 US dollars. That would cost you 1000 pesos. To that, you gotta add the taxes which are 40% so 400 ARS and 35% so 350 ARS.
If you sum all that up (1000 + 400 + 350) you will end up paying 1750 for those five dollars.
Now divide those pesos by those dollars 1750/5,40 and the result is 324. Meaning you just payed 1 dollar for 324 ARS.
So the official rate doesn't mean that's the actual price you pay.
When it comes to eligibility, you can't buy dollars if you have made any purchases abroad on a trip. You'll have to wait perhaps three months till you become eligible again.
If you ARE eligible, congrats! you can buy a maximum of 200 USD a month! Which means the rest of your money will devalue and will serve for nothing.

Here is the REAL problem in Argentina's economy:
Foreign businesses like Carrefour (supermarket chain) invade Argentina and put supermarkets all over the country. Then, after they make billions off dollars take their profits OUT of Argentina and back to France. Then the Argentinian government is forced to print more money to make up for the money taken out of the country. That causes the money to lose value when ever any government is forced to print more money. At the same time, thousands of Argentinian mom and pop shops are forced out of business because big companies from other countries open up shops in Argentina such as McDonalds, Malls, and other chain stores. That is the main problem in countries like Argentina. If all the money made in Argentina remained in Argentina, then more local businesses would continue to succeed and more Argentinian currency would be in the hands of Argentinian people and not in the hands of foreign companies from The United States and Europe. But, this actual fact is rarely reported on any kind of social media.

Get rid of the central bank and let the market set interest rates. For sure they'll be a lot of pain (as they are already), but that's the price of State regulation. Market based interest rates would become the antidote from these boom bust cycles.
So why don't they do it? Because it removes power from central planners. They have it and they are not interested in any solution that requires them to give it up. Further more they have made sure that the public have been educated (manipulated) not to accept it.
What do you do when the people won't accept the real solution? Just keep reminding them of the solution. Until they demand it - it's on them.

That is also happening here in Philippines. The 1,000 pesos used to afford many things, foods etc but now the 1,000 you can now count how many things you can afford with that money. Even the five kilos of rice is now priced 500+, everything is too pricey. Living in Philippines is good for those who are born rich, those who aren't need to strive harder so they can afford to buy food and other essentials. Working abroad is the last asset for other Filipino so they can help their family, can afford food and education. Working in Philippines isn't great, too much high standard but the salary is too low, that it can only feed 1 to two person, depends on the salary.😢

A crash in the stock or real estate markets has less of an immediate impact on people's standard of living than inflation or currency devaluation. That the market is so negative at the moment shouldn't be shocking. If we are to survive in this economy, we need assistance right away. The ETF and stock markets are still quite volatile, just like the property market. Now all that's left of my $370K portfolio is ruins.

I prefer to seek the advice of financial consultants when making my daily investment decisions, especially since their expertise is focused on short- and long-term holdings for profit realisation and because of their specific research, it is almost difficult for them to underperform. I've been investing with my consultant for just over two years, and during that time we have already generated sizeable net profits.

I've shuffled through investment consultants and yes, they can be positively impactful to an individual's portfolio, but do your due diligence to find a coach with grit, one that withstood the 08' crash. For me, ‘’Salvatore Fortunato Sofia” turned out to be better and smarter than all the consultant I ever worked with till date, I’ve never met anyone with as much conviction.

It seems to be the same issue worldwide. Greed, corruption and a passive working class have created a system that only works for top earners. The rest of the people are just existing. Not really living

I really don't see Argentina being a bad place to live. If you can offer something to the marketplace then you will always have work.
Argentina is a high risk but high reward country. If you can invest in something that you think will help the marketplace then your bound to make a living.
I know people that have made a fortune living and working here and all they did was use their head and work.
A lot of people depend on the government to help them but that will get you nowhere and you will still remain poor.
I don't see myself ever going back to be a slave in the United States. I have much more freedom here and my quality of life is pretty much the same disregarding "luxury cars" and appliances.
I do miss cheesecake and new york style pizza but that's about it.
I was a proud union worker making a good salary and I was well educated in my field but honestly this country taught me a lot more about life and work than I ever could have in the United States.
The education here is also well received and free. It's something the people should take advantage of because I paid thousands in the United States to study and here it is accessible.
I think the issue is is that companies don't keep up with inflation. Company's only raise salaries about once or twice a year and the inflation can definitely win you over.
Companies raise their products prices accordingly/monthly but salaries get left behind and most if not all of the working class is affected by it.
The import customs department (ADUANA) is a scam. They make you pay 75% tax on all items imported from outside the country.
I am fortunate enough to import goods from time to time but it is hard on the people especially if you need tools, items, health items, replacement parts to get yourself going.
God bless, I only put my trust in YAHUAH to keep me striving in hard times. I believe things will get worse but it is what it is until people change.
