@@buddymartin7923 And there you have it. "but in retrospect he usually *only hammered the ones that weren’t doing what they were supposed to"*
Most people hammer on Duane. But that guy has to make sure that everyone is doing their job. If deadlines are not met, if quality is subpar, if quota is not met, anything goes wrong... it's Duane's ass. There is a Duane, usually everywhere you work. He's the guy paid to hammer. You usually find guys like that in garages, construction sites, factories. He can't afford to be friends with anyone because nice, friendly guys usually get stepped on. And most importantly... Duane knows what he's doing & has a good work ethic.
I'll admit that he's gotten away with some pretty condescending remarks. But that's how it is, working in places like that. You get treated by how you behave. Act like a crybaby... someone's gonna treat you like a crybaby. That kind of work requires a thicker skin. Could you imagine BlueBear as the shop foreman? Good Lord.

@@buddymartin7923 ..."usually"... is the problem... Duane's aim was a little sloppy and his rate of fire was unchecked... Boyd, when your shop manager feels empowered enough to belittle someone in front of you the way Duane did here, you've got problems.

When you've risked YOUR money, and anything else that goes into running a business... only then can you pass judgement.
No employer is in charge of another's mental well-being. Boyd did not know that Brad was mentally incapable of handling himself, socially, with an abrasive type of person, like Duane.
Put yourself in Duane's shoes. You can't be shop foreman, and be a pal to everyone. In a profession like that, there are "Duanes" everywhere. You gotta know how to handle them. It's not the working-world's problem that an employee is overly sensitive. 🙄
Yeah... Duane was an asshole. So what? He's not there to help anyone feel warm and fuzzy inside. He's there to get jobs done, the right way, and on time. Guys like Duane always manage to be foremans because they know how to meet a deadline. Knowledge, experience, no fuckin around. That's why they are there... to keep the income flowing. Not to make friends, nor see to it that the weak are happy.
Even if Boyd was a shitty businessman... it's no one's business to tell him how he should have run his business. There's a ton of shitty business people. But, if you ain't the owner, then it's your job to help him make money, and mind your own business. If you can't handle how he does things... then leave, and hope your next endeavor lands you with a good businessman because... they don't owe you a lifestyle.

Worked their employees like slaves or worse, constantly saw instances where they "accidently" didn't pay them for overtime or weekend work and then Duane and Boyd always blamed everything on the workers and never thought it was a management problem when it was difficult to do a 4 week job in 2 weeks. That might be why Duane was a constant while everyone else in the shop left and why boyd let him get away with doing those things..even in front of him to his own floor workers . He couldn't tell him to shut up , leave the room or much less fire him because he knew the kind of backlash that HE could receive and that possibility scared him..Duane was in control and no one stood up to him..not even his boss...even when brad appealed to him as to why he let Duane do and say those things.

Duane is a perfect example of a workplace sociopath. Brad's reaction is the perfect reaction of someone who is frustrated / suppressed by being bullied.
Unfortunately people like Duane will kiss ass and belittle others to get their way to the top.
Duane is probably somewhere else in the same kind of position, simply by getting reactions like this.
Nobody wants emotional people (they look unstable and dangerous to have in the workplace) he will count on this and use it to his advantage whenever he can. Emotional people will be targets for him.
Here's the thing i find amusing, Duane would have cost Boyd's business tones of cash because of this kind of bullshit.
If you're given a task to do, if it's not done the same way as Duane. it's not done right. (by his standards) So you'll have to repeat the job. Duane would most likely hold back information till something is done, then pick you up on a fault that you were unaware of even though he knew from the start you'd have a problem. Fixing faults costs money. He would divide people and play them against each other. (gas lighting) take credit for work he hasn't done and go as far as sabotage other peoples work.
On top the this the staff turn over will be large, rehiring, training costs money too. Personally i think all companies should have policies in place to train people to identify this kind of bullying and it shouldn't be frowned upon for reporting it. I can almost guarantee Duane wouldn't be employed if this was in place. When you put $$ in front of any business owner, they'll choose their bottom line over a someone costing them cash. Hiring Duane = bye bye $$
i could be wrong, after all the show is edited in certain ways but when someone is clearly upset and you're calling them a "cry baby" you're showing the mental maturity of a kid. As a boss you're supposed to defuse a situation not make it worse. I've worked with people like this and even dated a female like this, not fun at all.
My advice to people dealing with this. The best reaction is no reaction. If complaints fall of deaf ears, find another job. Do not waste time in companies where this practice is allowed.

Want to run off good skilled men? this is how its done. Totally unprofessional behavior on management and shop supervisors end. Brad kept his cool as best he could and left without doing anything stupid to edge the situation on as the supervisor was taunting and name calling him. He didn't allow himself to fall into their trap as Byod tried to put words into his mouth. Brad claimed he called in but supervisor acted a jerk, got defensive and refused to show his phone call history to back up his claim when Brad asked him to. There is probably more to this and he was probably setup by that supervisor to look bad..A good worker will put up with only soo much abuse and neglect before he knows when its time to walk away. Usually a result of managers and supervisors actions..Brad spoke the truth about the supervisor but knew nothing would be done..so its best to leave. Brad was the real deal. you can tell if you've worked in this field long enough. Soo yeah..it was his dream..it hurts to lose it..it shows on guys who actually care..doesnt make em a "crybaby" to express disappointment when standing up for yourself. It was best to walk away and move on. I've been in situations like this..it sucks to go into the shop expecting to work that day only to find yourself loading up your box and leaving. So not only did boyd not have brad over the weekend, he now doesnt have him to work on customers cars that day and probably rest of the week. all due to that shop supervisor most likely. and because those cars are not going to be worked on, customers will get mad and no money will roll in that week to make payroll for other workers there and then it snowballs some more as more leave for similar reasons. like not being paid as Brad explained at the start. Employers fail time and again to realize that without quality workers and doing right by those workers who do the good work that brings in the money, their business will suffer and fail..the supervisor is no quality worker and detrimental to the morale on the shop floor. poor crew morale will kill a work environment and the quality of the work as well.. Its a wonder boyd stayed in business as long as he did with guys like that supervisor running the shop floor like that and chasing off the good workers left and right. Also a very poor business decision to actually air dirty laundry like this for all customers and potential customers to see on national television. I wouldn't want my car worked on in a shop run like that. I wouldnt want to work in a shop run like that..

When he drove away with that old classic car, I realized ..here is a guy that loves what he is doing and is passionate about it. Those people who suppress, belittle people like that ,that are hired to work for them is a real crime! Duane or the guy in the red hat should never have been given that much slack to treat a fellow employee like that. I have absolutely no respect what so ever for a person like that! When I first saw these episodes, I noticed that Boyd Coddington was a tyrant and it is sad that these type of things are entertaining. A lot of times we watch them because we are upset with how things are going! I have been in business for myself for over 35 years !! Usually when it goes sour is when I am working with people that have a lot of money. I try to be a good guy fair and honest and they just take advantage of you, or they don’t pay you at all. In this case I think Boyd should have taken Duane aside and said “You can’t be the shop Hitler any more” but it’s obvious that when people run a militant operation, part of their enjoyment is to exercise unrighteous dominion over other people! It is sad but I would’ve punched The guy in the nose quick and hard! ... and I would have refused the money because it is “filthy lucre”
