- SONOR Drums met up with Nir Z - the world-famous session drummer who you’ve heard play with John Mayer, Jason Mraz and Chris Cornell - and had him put the SONOR Vintage Series through its paces over two days. From rock to jazz to fusion, Nir tore through song after song and tuning after tuning. Here’s what Nir has to say.
Regarding the versatility of Vintage Series SONOR Drums: “I’ve been using those drums playing sessions, probably 80% of my sessions I’m playing Vintage Series. There is something about the Vintage, it doesn’t matter what kind of drumhead I’m using, I’m getting the sound I need for that particular project. That’s something that’s very unique...that’s a big achievement in my opinion.”
Regarding the sound of Vintage Series SONOR Drums: “You're gonna find a whole new world and a whole new experience out there, because those drums allowed you to do so, because they sound amazing. Doesn’t matter how high low you tune or how low you tune them or what kind of drumheads you put on them, they just respond. And the response, the connection between the player and the instrument is the most important thing.”
Nir’s final thoughts: “If this is the only drum set that I have forever - the Vintage Series - I’m good to go.”

Great drumming, Nir! Sounds really good!!
Finally, someone has these tuned so they don’t sound like cardboard boxes! The beech sings when tuned higher like this!
Nir Z has been one of my most favorite drummers for years. Doesn't matter what kit he plays, it always sounds great and it always sounds like him! Sonor is fortunate to have him showcasing their excellent drums!
Nir, always leaves me speechless. The drums sound incredible!
No doubt Sonor Vintage series are the best sounding and the best quality drums in the world!
Fanatic straight ahead grooves! What a versatile sounding kit played extremely well !
Just got my Sonor Vintage in Black Onyx a couple of weeks ago. Still working with the tuning options, but out of the box truly the best sounding kit I've ever played....This is a great representation of their craftmanship and quality. I cannot wait to hear it miked up in a live scenario.
Absolutely fantastic sounding kit!
WOOOOW that is a stunning set! What a purely musical tuning range
Awesome video. Incredible playing. Great recording. I want one!
He makes those drums sing! So musical and tasteful, big respect

Glad UA-cam recommended this to me 🙂
These drums sound fantastic, even on a very lossy UA-cam audio. And the drummer is phenomenal!!!
Nir is a class act!
These drums sound incredible :)

what a ringing endorsement. and backed it up with playing in multiple contexts. if i didn't already have a killer set of drums......
Nir Z is awesome! Love the 1950s look of this kit. Sounds fantastic!
That finish is beautiful
Own one of these in black onyx such an amazing sounding kit. I was hestitant at first because i play hard rock and metal but my friend convinced me it would be the best sounding kit ive played and he was right almost want to buy myself a second one in this nice blue
Yes, the response of these drum is what got me too. So unique but versatile at the same time. Just kickin‘. Nice one NirZ 👍🏼

Que hermosura hermano! Ojalá algún día llegue!
GENUINE PASSION...PERIOD!
They sounds really frickin good
The drums sound great at every tuning but I REALLY love the way the drums sound during the song "FACE-PLANT". Wow!!!
I Know Exactly What You're Talking About When The Resonance Flows Through You!
Nir is an amazing drummer! I love his work with Genesis and Ray Wilson!
Yea Chris Cornell too
Dream kit! 🤤
Excellent
This guy is the real deal. Great drummer!
Every word he is talking is true! I have the red oyster finish. Actually I would say "end of journey", but I would go for it once more if THIS stunning finish would be offered with some discount finally! 😜🤩
"It's literally going thru your veins!" Yep, that's Sonor!
Very nice drumming
This guy is fantastic. Sounds fantastic.
Sonor, please expand your lacquer finishes.
Yes!
Anyone else in lust with that hi-hat sound!? I believe he's using 15" Sabian Legacy hats.
Nir Z is the man!
Wow what a nice drumer ! Respec
Let’s not forget about his short-lived but amazing contribution to Genesis.
that fill at 4:23!!!!
I have these and the broadkaster and I still go back to Gretsch
What configuration for the Vintage Series?
When you put mics at EVERY kit.........you can make it sound................WHATEVER you want ;)
Yeah,What is he talking about??? Must be hard selling stuff that hasn’t really changed for 40 years
nope.

I'm surprised ToonTrack hasn't wanted to record these drums yet.
This is the kit D:
Whooow
That left foot, from the beginning
Sonor, what type of Wood 🪵 is utilized in this Vintage Series Drum 🥁 Kit?
100% German Beech
Beechwood
Pretty sure he made the same video about a Gretsch kit some years ago
Where can i get these tunes? i want that Face Plant so bad
Does it have re rings???
What he is saying is literally what every endorsed drummer says about every kit rave about
Was that a 16" floor tom in the last config?
I would say so, yes.
This cat is deep
would have been nice to hear some jazz/bigband.
Shallow shells sound like sheeeeit!
I find offset lugs so visually unappealing but you can't argue with that sound.
I quite like that look, but the lugs should be like that also on the floor toms, in my opinion.
Yeah the kit sounds great but I agree. I don't like the look of the offset lugs. I play Tama drums but I'd like to own a Sonor kit as well. Tama is my favorite brand but Sonor is a close second✌
@@normanwilmoth7404 - My first and very basic drum set 40 years ago had a Sonor snare and a Sonor bass drum in it (plus a set of bongoes and some cheapo hi-hats; Best.Xmas.Ever!), to which some 'Star' drums were added a bit later, which was Tama's previous brand name. I played this kit until the early 90's and then replaced it with a 70's Tama Imperialstar that looked exactly like Stewart Copeland's very first one (Can be seen in their 'Old Grey Whistle Test' performance) 🙂
@@mightyV444 cool 😎
Thank you! @@normanwilmoth7404 🙂
Why each time there's a vintage set,
They always start with versatile.
The purpose of a vintage kit is a specific sound.
Calf heads and gut on my snares.
I'm not interested in doing top40gigs.
A Black Beauty snare in got in 68 it being almost 30 year's old.
The dynamics in sound are its own,
I build my kit around that.
Castinople"K"s top things off.
I play in a 300 seat theater itself built in the 20s.
Young people are in shock by my sound.
I tell them "A pacemaker is for the almost dead/drum machines" I'm keeping this alive not the other way around"...
Sooo you are knocking this kit because its not one dimensional?
What kind of degenerate can dislike this?!?
The level of BS is astounding 🤣
I still prefer DW. Sorry
@Unsere Dreiwolf Sonor was miles ahead of all Drum Co.s decades ago.
