The thing is: chinese is a really simple language in my opinion, it has few structures and sentences are almost always built the same way (not by choice, but by rule). The real issue is that chinese words have no way to be represented by hearing them, you need to study and learn every single character on its own (while on western languages if you hear a word during your everyday life you can try to write it and search it through the use of the alphabet). At some point you'll get to a level in which you could somewhat figure out the general meaning and sound of a character by looking at it but it takes patience. IMHO best thing to do is to start with duolingo and/or some grammar books, helping it with basic yt videos. After you get your first grip the benchmark could be the HSK proficiency test, which has 9 levels and it is somewhat based on the amount of characters you've mastered (you can find lists of characters for each level all over the internet). IMHO again, HSK is a great benchmark but it is somewhat limited by the fact it doesn't test speaking capabilities, but rather listening, writing and reading comprehension.
This was so cool! I remember in "Dynasty Warriors 2" the characters pronouncing Chinese names in English ways, like "Cow Cow" for Cao Cao, so it was great to hear all of these names accurately pronounced.

You could do the names of the Jin faction generals from Dynasty Warriors 7. They were still called Wei long after Shu Han and Eastern Wu were defeated, and Sima Yi had betrayed Cao Pi. After years of internal conflict, it was Sima Yi's grandson, Sima Yan who united China under the banner of Jin in 266
Could you also maybe talk about the difference between the regular names and courtesy names or childhood names? Like Kongming, or Cao Cao being called both Cao Mengde or Cao Aman (by Yuan Shao)? I remember having played Dynasty Warriors first and being very confused by all the courtesy names I never knew like Zilong, Yide, and Yunchang etc. It wasn't until I did my own research that I realized who was being talked about and what courtesy names actually were

Zhuge Liang is definitely one of the more popular characters in Dynasty Warriors, yes. There was also a recent anime TV show called "Paripi Koumei" (usually translated as "Ya Boy Kong Ming") where Liang is reincarnated in modern day Tokyo and becomes a manager to an up and coming club singer lady, using his famous war strategies in new ways to help her music career. I'ts wonderful fun.
Fun story I was playing dynasty warriors games since I were 7yo. When the first time I play Zhuge liang and how the game mentioned his story both historical or fictional. I suddenly fallen in love with the character and since then I always called my father "Dad, you're my Zhuge liang" cuz my father is always there when I need advices, any items regarding school and he made his own thing to ease our daily activities at home.
My favorite character in Dynasty Warriors is Lu Xun! Unfortunately I grew up with the english pronunciation, so thank you for sharing this :) The newer games try to stick to their mandarin pronunciation which is always cool to see :) I've also read The Romance of the Three Kingdoms because I was such a big fan of the game! It's a very interesting read!

The thing I remember most is that in the English dub of Dynasty Warriors (aside from "Cow Cow" for Cao Cao) is that they would always use the standard names, but in the Mandarin and Japanese dubs of Dynasty warriors they would occasionally add in courtesy names or certain nicknames [in Mandarin for example Cao Cao would call Dian Wei "Elai" as his nickname based on a famous bodyguard in history]. I remember being really thrown off by the Japanese to hear Zhuge Liang addressed as "Koumei" which was the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese characters for Kongming. There were also subtler differences I eventually worked out, where the English says Wei, Wu, and Shu... while in Japanese/Mandarin they often said Cao-Wei, Sun-Wu, and Shu-Han.
Im a Native American from Oklahoma, my brother got me into playing dynasty Warriors as a child. Man I love that game and every version has its own unique play but I like them all And the Netflix movie My brother loves playing LuBu I like Zhang He (Claws character for most games) but Zhuge Liang was a very close second to me, with his fan attack. We natives have fans like that for our dancing and thats probably why I really liked it 😅 Thanks for the name pronunciations! Hearing their names properly pronounced with some historical tidbits is very fascinating. 6:47 Guo Jia was a relatively recent addition to the Dynasty Warriors series, and the developers made his character look really handsome. Added to the fact that he was given an easygoing yet mysterious personality, Guo Jia became one of the favourites in terms of popularity. (He was released alongside Pang De, who was frightening to look at compared to Guo Jia) 8:53 Xu Chu had a fight scene with Ma Chao in DW8 where they were going toe-to-toe with one another and ended in a draw --- not exactly what happened in the novel as you explained, but it was the first time Xu Chu had a positive limelight in the Dynasty Warriors series as he was always unfairly portrayed as a timid simpleton.
i agree with DW not giving XuChu the stage he deserved. After DianWei perished XuChu basically shouldered the responsibility of CaoCao's safety. There was even an event which was recorded in the history whereby he had a hunch that something bad was gonna happen right as he was on his way home after his shift has ended and he literally rushed back to CaoCao's tent and saved him from an assassination. Dude is a literal beast.
Gan Ning was my favorite as well. I loved how he was so confident in his crew's combat prowess, that they wore bells to let their enemies know they were coming. I've seen a lot of characters in pop culture that were inspired by Gan Ning and his bells.

This video is very usefull. Countries have pronunciation in their own. In thialand, we call Lü Bu like 'Li pô' or you can copy this word ' ลิโป้ ' and paste it into google translate to hear the pronunciation if you want.

This is very nice! Even though I started reading Romance of the Three Kingdoms when I was very young, the Thai translation uses Hokkien names, so I often have no idea how these names are pronounced in Mandarin.
So...I've been studying Mandarin as my "once COVID is past us, I will have come out with the ability to ____________." I feel like I've actually done quite well and enjoy chatting with the staff at my local dim sum place to practice. That said, this video was AWESOME. I hadn't realized I'd never really shared a UA-cam vid before--I've sent tik toks to friends or whatever, but not the UA-cam share button--and I pretty much immediately sent this to every friend I had through middle/high school because I knew they'd be just as excited regardless of if they know any Mandarin. Man. Sometimes I'll get all depressed from doom scrolling or whatever, but it's times like this that I'm able to correct my brain and realize how amazing the world is right now compared to my childhood.
I got to say you were spot on. Man I feel as if you were speaking love to me. I am always fascinated with the Romance of the Three kingdoms. I wish I could speak and understand Mandarin. The names simply invoke something in you when you hear them properly, at least to me. I would love a part two simply for the names of all the women as well as some important information on them or even fun facts we may not even know due to the game or what is taught in China. My favorite character in these games is Zhu Ge Liang, because I really liked the portrayal of that character in the movie Red Cliff 赤壁 from 2009. He was so smart and cool, and even funny.
This is great! I have really been confused with Romanization of names both from Mandarin and Cantonese after I found out I had been pronouncing Cao Cao wrong for years. While I keep making mistakes I always want to pronounce them as close to proper as I can. Especially in a language where little changes in pronunciation can change meaning of words entirely. I've been a big fan of the DW games since their inception, which encouraged me to read Rot3K. While I had most of the sounds correct in my mind, some of the vowel sounds are quite foreign for a native english speaker. thank you for the run through. Pang Tong (龐統), Zhang Fei (張飛), and Sun Ce (孫策) were always my favorites to play.

I heard that if Guo Jia hadn't died so young, Zhuge Liang and Pang Tong would not have been so highly regarded, Cao Cao would have just won Chibi and destroyed the other warlords.
I think the cow cow pronunciation continued until Dynasty Warriors 6 when it was changed to sao sao, but I believe Dynasty Warriors 5 was when Cao Pi became a playable character and because the game hadn't changed the pronunciation yet it resulted in him being called cow pee.
Loved this game as a kid. Played for hours an hours with my cousins such a cool game. Am glad I got to learn about other cultures through a dam video game 😆 I loved it

Thanks for this video. I'm Singaporean and can speak Mandarin, but I'm terrible at reading at writing. I've never really known all the 3 kingdoms character name's actual Chinese words because I only knew them from Dynasty warriors as well. While i obviously knew some of the famous ones, mostly from Shu Han, I never knew many of Cao Cao and the Sun family generals. I know Pinyin and could pronounce them correctly to a point based on the spelling (definitely not cow cow), but without the tones, I've always just mentally assigned the tones myself arbitrarily. Thanks to your video, I've finally discovered the tones I've always read them as for lots of the characters were completely wrong 😂. One example of a name I've mentally butchered for many years is Xià hóu dūn. For years, I've always read it as Xià hòu dùn.
common problem with singaporean chinese, we can speak conversational mandarin but when it comes to reading and writing, we suck so bad...also we would struggle to name simple everyday objects because we are so used to saying them in english...like can you even name simple computer parts/peripherals like mouse/keyboard/monitor in mandarin? I know i can't..
When I was in a SAP secondary school, we had to read san guo yan yi over the holidays. We would be tested when school started again. Needless to say, no one went to actually read the entire book in Chinese. Everyone scrambled to find the comic book version, and the really jiak kentang ones (including me) read the English comic book version and played Dynasty Warriors. I remember on the morning before the test, everyone was frantically trying to match the English names from the comic book with their actual Chinese names. Fortunately the test was MCQ, and everyone passed. It was funny trying to match the Chinese names on the test paper with the English names in my head from Dynasty Warriors.

He has to be my favorite for being a man of principle and realizing when a mistake is made, making sure never to stray from the right path again. My buddy and I were obsessed with dynasty warriors 3 and in fifth grade we had a Chinese exchange student come to a birthday party and he corrected the game and taught all of us the pronunciation of the characters names and we thought it was so rad, even if half of us still had a hard time pronouncing em lol..
I'm familiar with Three Kingdoms already but this video was really cool! Something to just add on a bit: You mentioned that a lot of people hold Xiahou Dun as one of the best generals of the Three Kingdoms, even over the likes of Xu Chu. Something interesting to note is that Xiahou Dun, in actual history, was a pretty lackluster military general. He's the one in real history who was responsible for losing Yan province to Lu Bu (he was left behind during the Xu Province campaign to guard the capital of Puyang). And then he was captured in his own damn camp by Lu Bu's men when he fell for a fake surrender. Xiahou Dun was a good administrator that was kept in the peaceful interior provinces because he just didn't have the military abilities to oversee his border territories. However, outside of his military blunders, he was a good administrator. Still valuable to Cao Cao, but not nearly in the way most people think of him. Certainly not even close to the likes of Xu Chu, Zhang Liao, Xiahou Yuan, or Cao Ren. Another fun fact is that Xiahou Yuan was the only person that was able to expand Cao Cao's territory without Cao Cao having to directly lead the army.
When it comes to the warriors games players tend to be massive fans of the strategists and advisors. Guo Jia and Xu Shu were 2 characters that were requested for a long time and finally introduced in Dynasty Warriors 7 and Xtreme Legends. One person few mention is Liu Shan as Dynasty Warriors tries to present him as a sympathetic leader who surrendered for the good of his people, yet many consider him to be cowardly for his actions.
Hey Jessie! Wanted to tell you (if you haven’t been informed in the comment section already) In regards to the storyline of Dynasty Warriors vs the books. As a whole most of the DW games has made up content (especially the later games). With the exception of your major plot points of like Yellow Turban Rebellion, Hu Lao Gate etc. most of the games have those as standard levels/Stages/maps whatever you wanna call it. Since you mentioned the whole Dong Zhuo assasination plot point from the books, I will point out that Dynasty Warriors 4 has a very nice in detail stage where you play as Lu Bu or Diao Chan and you actually infiltrate Dong Zhuo’s personal residence and assassinate him. It’s a pretty nice touch and nod to the book. None of the other sequels touch on that in detail again btw. DW4 was made in the early 2000’s sometime if memory serves. That level always stuck out to me even all these years later and many sequels later. Just thought you might find that interesting :)
Hong Jing does have a story in Wo Long, she's Lu Bu's sister. She's pretty much an OC made by Team Ninja for Wo long. Thanks for doing the pronunciations, I can't pronounce them, but it's cool to hear the proper pronunciation. I know Wo Long has Chinese audio but idk how accurate it is. In theEnglish voices they say Cao Cao as Cow Cow or Chow Chow. Wo Long wasn't a character in Wo Long, at least not named but there's speculation he's in there.

I'm really grateful for this. Playing Wo Long with the Mandarin dialogue enabled made me realise how unhelpful the Dynasty Warriors games' English voice performances had been in trying to pronounce names correctly. The tones are so hard though, I feel like I'm not getting them quite right 😂.

You can type Ü with an umlaut on English international keyboard layout by putting " symbol before u, it will convert it automatically. Similarly, ú will be made by pressing ' before it. So now you can type Motörhead and Mötley Crüe or niché, naïve and even garçon without copy-pasting. It also uses ^ for some letters like û. The harder to type are Japanese longer Ū or ō with a macron, most layouts don't support it as is.
I've been playing these games for at least fifteen years, it is nice to know the real way to pronounce them. My favorites were always Zhang Fei, Ma Chao, and Zhao Yun.

This was corrected in DW5 to now. Even Total War Three Kingdoms has it corrected and uses the mandarin language for the game.
They have fixed the pronunciation now in the more recent titles

There was also a recent anime TV show called "Paripi Koumei" (usually translated as "Ya Boy Kong Ming") where Liang is reincarnated in modern day Tokyo and becomes a manager to an up and coming club singer lady, using his famous war strategies in new ways to help her music career. I'ts wonderful fun.
Fun story I was playing dynasty warriors games since I were 7yo. When the first time I play Zhuge liang and how the game mentioned his story both historical or fictional. I suddenly fallen in love with the character and since then I always called my father "Dad, you're my Zhuge liang" cuz my father is always there when I need advices, any items regarding school and he made his own thing to ease our daily activities at home.
My favorite character in Dynasty Warriors is Lu Xun! Unfortunately I grew up with the english pronunciation, so thank you for sharing this :) The newer games try to stick to their mandarin pronunciation which is always cool to see :)
I've also read The Romance of the Three Kingdoms because I was such a big fan of the game! It's a very interesting read!

Sadly "Shang Xiang" is a made up, pop culture name for dramas that Koei adapted into the game. Her real name was never recorded in history.

The thing I remember most is that in the English dub of Dynasty Warriors (aside from "Cow Cow" for Cao Cao) is that they would always use the standard names, but in the Mandarin and Japanese dubs of Dynasty warriors they would occasionally add in courtesy names or certain nicknames [in Mandarin for example Cao Cao would call Dian Wei "Elai" as his nickname based on a famous bodyguard in history]. I remember being really thrown off by the Japanese to hear Zhuge Liang addressed as "Koumei" which was the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese characters for Kongming. There were also subtler differences I eventually worked out, where the English says Wei, Wu, and Shu... while in Japanese/Mandarin they often said Cao-Wei, Sun-Wu, and Shu-Han.
Im a Native American from Oklahoma, my brother got me into playing dynasty Warriors as a child. Man I love that game and every version has its own unique play but I like them all

6:47 Guo Jia was a relatively recent addition to the Dynasty Warriors series, and the developers made his character look really handsome. Added to the fact that he was given an easygoing yet mysterious personality, Guo Jia became one of the favourites in terms of popularity. (He was released alongside Pang De, who was frightening to look at compared to Guo Jia)
8:53 Xu Chu had a fight scene with Ma Chao in DW8 where they were going toe-to-toe with one another and ended in a draw --- not exactly what happened in the novel as you explained, but it was the first time Xu Chu had a positive limelight in the Dynasty Warriors series as he was always unfairly portrayed as a timid simpleton.
i agree with DW not giving XuChu the stage he deserved. After DianWei perished XuChu basically shouldered the responsibility of CaoCao's safety. There was even an event which was recorded in the history whereby he had a hunch that something bad was gonna happen right as he was on his way home after his shift has ended and he literally rushed back to CaoCao's tent and saved him from an assassination. Dude is a literal beast.

In thialand, we call Lü Bu like 'Li pô' or you can copy this word ' ลิโป้ ' and paste it into google translate to hear the pronunciation if you want.
The original Japanese Dynasty Warrior games use the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese names, like Cao Cao is pronounced as Sō Sō そうそう

I found your channel through UA-cam shorts where you do your, "When English is your second language," skits (comedies.) Which I absolutely adore (yessee yessee.) But, I also love your Chinese to English translation videos, especially with your boyfriend (husband? Sorry not to sure.) They are really great to watch. Unfortunately I have not learnt any Chinese through them, not because you are not a great teacher, but my retention span (that is the capacity to which you can remember things,) is really low and has been all my life. Honestly, I can watch a movie, 2 months down the line, watch it again and not remember hardly any of it. It's also because I am an old man now. (养老金领取者 Yǎnglǎo jīn lǐngqǔ zhě) But thank you, Jessie. This is very nice! Even though I started reading Romance of the Three Kingdoms when I was very young, the Thai translation uses Hokkien names, so I often have no idea how these names are pronounced in Mandarin.
So...I've been studying Mandarin as my "once COVID is past us, I will have come out with the ability to ____________." I feel like I've actually done quite well and enjoy chatting with the staff at my local dim sum place to practice.
That said, this video was AWESOME. I hadn't realized I'd never really shared a UA-cam vid before--I've sent tik toks to friends or whatever, but not the UA-cam share button--and I pretty much immediately sent this to every friend I had through middle/high school because I knew they'd be just as excited regardless of if they know any Mandarin.
Man. Sometimes I'll get all depressed from doom scrolling or whatever, but it's times like this that I'm able to correct my brain and realize how amazing the world is right now compared to my childhood.

The names simply invoke something in you when you hear them properly, at least to me. I would love a part two simply for the names of all the women as well as some important information on them or even fun facts we may not even know due to the game or what is taught in China. This is great! I have really been confused with Romanization of names both from Mandarin and Cantonese after I found out I had been pronouncing Cao Cao wrong for years. While I keep making mistakes I always want to pronounce them as close to proper as I can. Especially in a language where little changes in pronunciation can change meaning of words entirely. Thank you so much it will increase my enjoyment of all things Pertaining to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
I've been a big fan of the DW games since their inception, which encouraged me to read Rot3K. While I had most of the sounds correct in my mind, some of the vowel sounds are quite foreign for a native english speaker. thank you for the run through. Pang Tong (龐統), Zhang Fei (張飛), and Sun Ce (孫策) were always my favorites to play.

I heard that if Guo Jia hadn't died so young, Zhuge Liang and Pang Tong would not have been so highly regarded, Cao Cao would have just won Chibi and destroyed the other warlords.
I think the cow cow pronunciation continued until Dynasty Warriors 6 when it was changed to sao sao, but I believe Dynasty Warriors 5 was when Cao Pi became a playable character and because the game hadn't changed the pronunciation yet it resulted in him being called cow pee.
Loved this game as a kid. Played for hours an hours with my cousins such a cool game. Am glad I got to learn about other cultures through a dam video game 😆 I loved it

Thanks for this video. I'm Singaporean and can speak Mandarin, but I'm terrible at reading at writing. I've never really known all the 3 kingdoms character name's actual Chinese words because I only knew them from Dynasty warriors as well. While i obviously knew some of the famous ones, mostly from Shu Han, I never knew many of Cao Cao and the Sun family generals. I know Pinyin and could pronounce them correctly to a point based on the spelling (definitely not cow cow), but without the tones, I've always just mentally assigned the tones myself arbitrarily. Thanks to your video, I've finally discovered the tones I've always read them as for lots of the characters were completely wrong 😂.
One example of a name I've mentally butchered for many years is Xià hóu dūn. For years, I've always read it as Xià hòu dùn.

common problem with singaporean chinese, we can speak conversational mandarin but when it comes to reading and writing, we suck so bad...also we would struggle to name simple everyday objects because we are so used to saying them in english...like can you even name simple computer parts/peripherals like mouse/keyboard/monitor in mandarin? I know i can't..

When I was in a SAP secondary school, we had to read san guo yan yi over the holidays. We would be tested when school started again. Needless to say, no one went to actually read the entire book in Chinese. Everyone scrambled to find the comic book version, and the really jiak kentang ones (including me) read the English comic book version and played Dynasty Warriors. I remember on the morning before the test, everyone was frantically trying to match the English names from the comic book with their actual Chinese names. Fortunately the test was MCQ, and everyone passed. It was funny trying to match the Chinese names on the test paper with the English names in my head from Dynasty Warriors.
Wow this is so cool. As a Vietnamese, it is difficult to predict the names just by reading in English, although I have some knowledge about the three-kingdom age. I remember the first time I heard about 'Cao Cao', I was like who is he? And the character appeared, ah yes 'Tào Tháo'

My buddy and I were obsessed with dynasty warriors 3 and in fifth grade we had a Chinese exchange student come to a birthday party and he corrected the game and taught all of us the pronunciation of the characters names and we thought it was so rad, even if half of us still had a hard time pronouncing em lol..
I'm surprised at how close I was to pronouncing them correctly when I first played DW2. This is great.
I'm familiar with Three Kingdoms already but this video was really cool! Something to just add on a bit: You mentioned that a lot of people hold Xiahou Dun as one of the best generals of the Three Kingdoms, even over the likes of Xu Chu. Something interesting to note is that Xiahou Dun, in actual history, was a pretty lackluster military general. He's the one in real history who was responsible for losing Yan province to Lu Bu (he was left behind during the Xu Province campaign to guard the capital of Puyang). And then he was captured in his own damn camp by Lu Bu's men when he fell for a fake surrender.
Xiahou Dun was a good administrator that was kept in the peaceful interior provinces because he just didn't have the military abilities to oversee his border territories. However, outside of his military blunders, he was a good administrator. Still valuable to Cao Cao, but not nearly in the way most people think of him. Certainly not even close to the likes of Xu Chu, Zhang Liao, Xiahou Yuan, or Cao Ren. Another fun fact is that Xiahou Yuan was the only person that was able to expand Cao Cao's territory without Cao Cao having to directly lead the army.
When it comes to the warriors games players tend to be massive fans of the strategists and advisors. Guo Jia and Xu Shu were 2 characters that were requested for a long time and finally introduced in Dynasty Warriors 7 and Xtreme Legends. One person few mention is Liu Shan as Dynasty Warriors tries to present him as a sympathetic leader who surrendered for the good of his people, yet many consider him to be cowardly for his actions.

Hey Jessie! Wanted to tell you (if you haven’t been informed in the comment section already) In regards to the storyline of Dynasty Warriors vs the books. As a whole most of the DW games has made up content (especially the later games). With the exception of your major plot points of like Yellow Turban Rebellion, Hu Lao Gate etc. most of the games have those as standard levels/Stages/maps whatever you wanna call it. Since you mentioned the whole Dong Zhuo assasination plot point from the books, I will point out that Dynasty Warriors 4 has a very nice in detail stage where you play as Lu Bu or Diao Chan and you actually infiltrate Dong Zhuo’s personal residence and assassinate him. It’s a pretty nice touch and nod to the book. None of the other sequels touch on that in detail again btw. DW4 was made in the early 2000’s sometime if memory serves. That level always stuck out to me even all these years later and many sequels later.

Hong Jing does have a story in Wo Long, she's Lu Bu's sister. She's pretty much an OC made by Team Ninja for Wo long.

Wo Long wasn't a character in Wo Long, at least not named but there's speculation he's in there.

You can type Ü with an umlaut on English international keyboard layout by putting " symbol before u, it will convert it automatically. Similarly, ú will be made by pressing ' before it. So now you can type Motörhead and Mötley Crüe or niché, naïve and even garçon without copy-pasting. It also uses ^ for some letters like û. The harder to type are Japanese longer Ū or ō with a macron, most layouts don't support it as is.
I've been playing these games for at least fifteen years, it is nice to know the real way to pronounce them. My favorites were always Zhang Fei, Ma Chao, and Zhao Yun.

I am loving this video. I grew up on Dynasty Warriors and the series is what inspired my interest in three kingdoms history and learning how the game takes massive liberties with the history or even the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
